Abstract:
AbstractExtensive insecticide use has led to the resistance of mosquitoes to these insecticides, posing a major barrier to mosquito control. Previous Solexa high-throughput sequencing ofCulex pipiens pallensin the laboratory has revealed that the abundance of a novel microRNA (miRNA), miR-13664, was higher in a deltamethrin-sensitive (DS) strain than a deltamethrin-resistant (DR) strain. Real-time quantitative PCR revealed that the miR-13664 transcript level was lower in the DR strain than in the DS strain. MiR-13664 oversupply in the DR strain increased the susceptibility of these mosquitoes to deltamethrin, whereas inhibition of miR-13664 made the DS strain more resistant to deltamethrin. Results of bioinformatic analysis, quantitative reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction, luciferase assay and miR mimic/inhibitor microinjection revealedCpCYP314A1to be a target of miR-13664. In addition, downregulation ofCpCYP314A1expression in the DR strain reduced the resistance of mosquitoes to deltamethrin. Taken together, our results indicate that miR-13664 could regulate deltamethrin resistance by interacting withCpCYP314A1, providing new insights into mosquito resistance mechanisms.

Abstract:
AbstractThis is the first report of the application of a new examination technique for the assessment of cellular activity during bone resorption in chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM). A total of nineteen incudes removed during the course of tympanomastoid surgery were studied (retraction pocket: 2; tubo-tympanic CSOM: 4; attico-antral CSOM: 13). The microscopic surface topography of each specimen was examined using the scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the appearances are interpreted in terms of cortical cellular activity. The results suggest that the mechanism of ossicular erosion in CSOM is similar regardless of the exact type of disease. Extensively, pitted areas were seen in all specimens. These pits are morphologically indistinguishable from those characteristic of osteoclastic activity (Howship's lacunae). We conclude that in all causes the surface topography of eroded incudes is consistent with the activity of osteoclasts.

Abstract:
AbstractIn the second half of the 6th century BC four South Italian Greek colonial cities – Sybaris, Croton, Metapontum and Caulonia – were minting silver-copper alloy coins, all in the incuse fabric, with the same weight standard of c. 8gm. These incuse coins were to remain in production at Croton and Metapontum for the next 100 years.Coins hoards indicate that these four cities began minting their coinage at the outset as very fine, artistic – even exquisite – objects of fine crafts-manship. Each coin was thin (1mm), broad (30mm) and of a consistently uniform weight and diameter, and each coin was struck between dies of exceptional quality. During subsequent decades the diameter of the coinage was progressively reduced. At Monash University in 1980 we conducted experiments in coin manufacturing to determine how the minters at Croton in the 6th century produced these thin, incuse coins from only a small amount (8gm) of silver alloy, how they maintained a consistent weight standard across a century of minting, and why they progressively reduced the size of their coins during this period. It is well-known that the manufacturing processes of objects made from metal alloys can be revealed by examining their crystal structures. In our experiments in manufacturing broad, thin ‘Monash coins’, we examined the crystal structures at various stages throughout the process. To do this we made coin blanks of various diameters, all made from 8gm of silver-copper alloy. These blanks were subjected to hardness tests and photographs were made of the alloy’s crystal microstructures. ‘Coins’ were then minted by striking blanks between two manufactured replica dies, and their microstructures were compared with the microstructures of a genuine Croton incuse coin fragment. This is the first time these results have been published.

Abstract:

Pemphigus vulgaris is a cutaneous blistering disorder affecting mainly middle aged adult and is rarely observed in pregnancy and also below the age of 30 years. A 27 years old lady with 7 months pregnancy reported to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka with oral and cutaneous lesions suggestive of pemphigus vulgaris. Tzanck smear, histological examination and direct immunofluorescence study confirmed the diagnosis and the case showed improvement with only oral steroid. The patient delivered a normal healthy child without complications. No clinical relapse was found after delivery and follow up period of six months. Abstract:
e11585 Background: Anthracyclines have been widely used in the treatment of solid and hematologic malignancies. Cardiotoxicity is the most serious adverse effect that limits anthracycline treatment. Cardiotoxicity is classified by time of onset as acute, subacute and chronic. Conventional echocardiography is not sensitive enough for early detection of cardiotoxicity. In this study we aimed to evaluate anthracycline induced cardiac toxicity by speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) before left ventricular dysfunction occurs. Methods: The study included newly diagnosed breast cancer (BC) and lymphoma patients (pts) who were treated with an anthracycline containing chemotherapy (CT) regimen. They had examination with conventional echocardiyography, STE before and after anthracycline treatment. Longitudinal strain values were assessed by automated function image (AFI). Results: Thirty five pts with BC and 15 pts with lymphoma were included in the study. Ejection fraction (EF) and fractional shortening values were decreased in lymphoma pts receiving high dose anthracycline treatment (346 mg/m2) compared to BC pts receiving low dose (168 mg/m2) anthracycline. There was statistically significant increase in myocardial performance index in both groups after anthracycline CT (p=0.001 and p=0.004 for BC and lymphoma group respectively). In STE measurements, apical long axis, apikal 4 chamber and global peak systolic strain showed significant reduction in lymphoma group who had a post-therapy EF <55% (p=0.002, p=0.041, and p=0.004, respectively). Apical long axis and global peak systolic strain were also significantly decreased among the lymphoma pts with normal systolic function after CT (p=0.01 and p=0.05, respectively). Conclusions: STE can display the effect of anthracycline induced cardiotoxicity early before left ventricular dysfunction occurs. Larger prospective studies are needed to verify these data and direct the treatment of pts receiving anthracycline.
