Abstract:
Kim Jin-man has been one of the representative literary painters of the 20th century who has established his art world through Sagunja painting and Gimyeongjeolji painting and influenced the flower bed for a long time since he had academic ability. In order to restore the independence of the Japanese colonial eran people and achieve national independence, he started the Reconstruction Achievement Friendship Association and the “Daegu Pistol Incident”. He was a representative anti-Japanese independence activist in Daegu in the 1910s who promoted the anti-Japanese independence movement. His anti-Japanese independence movement was inherited over three generations. Soon, he continued to his grandson Kim Il-sik, following his sons Kim Young-jo and Kim Young-ki. Through this, the Kim Jin-man family established the overall image of the three major independence movements. In addition, the three major independence movements of the Kim Jin-man family were consistent with the chang e in the route of the anti-Japanese independence movement in Japanese colonial era. The three major independence movements of the Kim Jin-man family have great implications for the direction that our society should view and predict even today in the 21st century.

Abstract:
Khudai Khidmatgar Movement was an important historical movement which mobilized the polity in a bottom-up direction to awaken the people living in the then North Western Province and today's province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan was a transformational and charismatic leader. He educated common people about non-violence as a tool for organization and accomplishment of designed objectives. The essence of whole movement was rooted in the religion Islam which is interesting against the background of inspiration drawn by Pushtuns nationalists for the legitimacy of their narratives. This work throws new light on historical legacy of Khudai Khidmatgar Movement led by Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan from a leadership perspective through historical comparative method. A new insight will be made to dig out various methods adopted by the leadership of the movement to gain the legitimacy of the movement and which had roots in religious text.

Abstract:
The period after Gandhi's arrival in India from South Africa is called the 'Gandhi Era' of independence. The political activities going on in British India during this period were centered on Gandhi and Gandhism, that is, non-violence was especially followed in their movements. During this period, the independence movements of India also had an impact in Rajasthan. Various non-violent movements took place in Rajasthan right from the inception of the Congress. For example, when the messages of the Congress sessions of 1885, 1886 and 1889 reached Ajmer, the students of Ajmer formed the Congress Committee. At this time the Bijolia peasant movement was a non-violent movement in Rajputana, in which the peasants resisted the princely atrocities non-violently. During the non-cooperation movement, despite the moderate attitude of the kings towards the British rule, the people non-violently opposed the British laws and during these three visits of Gandhi to Rajasthan were important. The influence of Gandhi's non-violent teachings is clearly visible in the various peasant movements of Rajasthan. During the Salt Satyagraha, the people peacefully opposed the British laws. Apart from this, for the establishment of responsible government in Rajasthan, Prajamandal movement was started which were examples of non-violent movement. In this context, the said research paper studies the pre-independence Gandhian movements of Rajasthan in front of the society and presents a non-violent outline of all pacifist movements. Abstract:
Kosovo celebrated its independence in 2008, and many in the Balkans were eager to see finally peace replacing war into the war-torn region. Iranian civil rights movement also shares some interesting features with the Kosovo case. In this paper, we will show how these similarities are being used in Iranian political system. We will investigate the direct correlates between these two cases as well, especially in the case of Diaspora. In the Kosovo case, however, the path to independence has not been as easy and clear as was hoped for in the beginning. Many countries still refuse to recognize Kosovo as an independent state. Among them are even some European Union members. In this study, we explain the reasons behind the lengthy and difficult process of independence. We also investigate role of identity crisis and its direct link to the independence path. In fact, ethnic Albanians were expecting a reunion with their historical homeland in Albania and this mismatch between expectations and reality made it even harder for them to live inside the not yet well-defined new country, Kosovo. On the other hand, language and religious barriers between ethnic Serbs and Albanians in Kosovo keep alive tensions and hostilities in the region. Furthermore, we investigate the way European Union and Kosovo Diaspora play an important role for the future independent country.

Lang, Catherine E., and Marc H. Schieber. "Human Finger Independence: Limitations due to Passive Mechanical Coupling Versus Active Neuromuscular Control." Journal of Neurophysiology 92, no. 5 (November 2004): 2802–10. http://dx.doi.org/10.1152/jn.00480.2004.

Full text
Abstract:
We studied the extent to which mechanical coupling and neuromuscular control limit finger independence by studying passive and active individuated finger movements in healthy adults. For passive movements, subjects relaxed while each finger was rotated into flexion and extension by a custom-built device. For active movements, subjects moved each finger into flexion and extension while attempting to keep the other, noninstructed fingers still. Active movements were performed through approximately the same joint excursions and at approximately the same speeds as the passive movements. We quantified how mechanical coupling limited finger independence from the passive movements, and quantified how neuromuscular control limited finger independence using an analysis that subtracted the indices obtained in the passive condition from those obtained in the active condition. Finger independence was generally similar during passive and active movements, but showed a trend toward less independence in the middle, ring, and little fingers during active, large-arc movements. Mechanical coupling limited the independence of the index, middle, and ring fingers to the greatest degree, followed by the little finger, and placed only negligible limitations on the independence of the thumb. In contrast, neuromuscular control primarily limited the independence of the ring, and little fingers during large-arc movements, and had minimal effects on the other fingers, especially during small-arc movements. For the movement conditions tested here, mechanical coupling between the fingers appears to be a major factor limiting the complete independence of finger movement.

Abstract:
The spirit of environmentalism generated some of the most memorable images of the eastern and central European independence movements of the late 1980s and early 1990s. In 1988, protesters formed a human chain around the Ignalina nuclear reactor in Lithuania. That same year, thousands of Hungarians marched through downtown Budapest to rally against their government's prospective participation in the construction of a dam on the Danube River. The environmental movements in the former eastern bloc marked the beginning of the end of Soviet era communism in Europe. However, many commentators have implied that environmental protest was a proxy for other, more politically explosive grievances. Environmentalism was decisive, it is argued, because it provided a release valve for pent-up frustrations and repressed nationalistic ardor. Re-examining the independence movement in Estonia, this article contends that environmentalism was not incidental to citizens’ larger aims. The specific, environmentally destructive activities people condemned embodied many of the features of the Soviet system that people despised generally. Resource-intensive and pollution-prone projects proposed by Moscow provoked a broadly conceived environmental revolt rather than environmental protest “in name only.” The environmentally related constituents of Estonia's independence movement included citizens’ opposition to pollution of the environment and waste of natural resources; perceived “mindlessness” of industrial policy in Estonia; the promise of new Russian-speaking immigrants to work in environmentally unfriendly industries; and economic exploitation of natural resources in Estonia for the benefit of other Soviet republics, especially the Russian RSFSR.

Ozden, Tugba. "The Dalit Movement Within The Context Of The Indian Independence Movement." Master's thesis, METU, 2005. http://etd.lib.metu.edu.tr/upload/12606575/index.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses the Dalit Movement with regards to the twentieth century Indian nationalism and independence movement. Within this epoch, India was dealing with both internal and external problems, and this thesis confronts with the process of double freedom movement rolled into one, in India. On one side Indian nation was fighting against the British Imperialism and on the other hand the least level of the ancient Hindu social order varna, the Untouchables, were fighting against the higher castes for eradication of their historical backwardness. This solution of both problems pointed out changes in social and political terms. The mentioned movement under the leadership of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, who is recognized as the architect of the Indian constitution, aimed to obtain both political and social rights and freedom for the Untouchables. By this movement, Dalits initially managed to attain political rights and to outlaw discrimination among people. And then, in order to facilitate the integration of Dalits within the social sphere, they decided to convert from Br&

hmanism to Buddhism in year 1956 and ten thousands of Dalits converted following Dr. Ambedkar. In the present day, the ex-Untouchables are living under the umbrellas of Buddhism, Islam or Christianity in various parts of India. Even though the mentioned ex-Untouchables survive normally and non-problematically in urban, those of them living in the rural front against the violence of radical rightist, nationalist Hindus.

Kowalchuk, Lisa. "The social basis of the Quebec independence movement /." Thesis, McGill University, 1992. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=61321.

Abstract:
This thesis assesses several theories about the social basis of the Quebec independence movement. The most prevalent of these theories locates the core of support for Quebec independence in the Francophone new middle class. The Marxist perspective offers a closely related hypothesis, according to which the independence movement is based in the Francophone new petite bourgeoisie. A third theory sees the new class as at the helm of the new social movements, among which is the Quebec independence movement. Finally, a fourth hypothesis is that the Francophone intellectuals and professional intelligentsia are the foremost separatists.
The results of tabular and logistic regression analysis of data on referendum support for sovereignty-association refute the new middle class and new petite bourgeoisie hypotheses. The analyses indicate considerable support for sovereignty-association among a narrow variant of the new class. Within this narrow new class, or professional intelligentsia, support for sovereignty is most heavily concentrated among the Francophone intellectuals. The most discriminating predictor of separatism is not class, but the opposition between those in intellectuals vs. the business/managerial occupations. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Abstract:
This study examines the mobilisation and identity formation of the Scottish independence movement post-referendum. By analysing arguments, emotions and actions in support for independence, I aim to discuss how the movement make use of cultural perspectives on history for continuous mobilisation. The study focuses on the members of the umbrella organisation of Yes Scotland, which is a diverse network of activist and party-political groups. To understand the movement, I have made use of a political and active approach such as participating in meetings and at demonstrations. Importantly, while I acknowledge how the Scottish independence movement navigates within a discourse of nationalism because of its nationalist character, I argue that the movement mainly make use of an alternative ideology. This ideology is tied to historical narratives which are remade in present forms and take several expressions. For instance, I claim that this ideology generates the practice of international solidarity as well as a specific identity which is constructed and reproduced for one specific political project: to achieve Scottish independence. This thesis is a contribution to the study of social movements, as well as it provides understanding of reasoning beyond and within nationalism.

Abstract:
During past decades, the mass movement of people from rural areas towards urban areas made cities vulnerable to environmental hazards, inequality, poverty, and communicable diseases identified as a huge threat. The spread of the Covid-19 pandemic causing more than five million deaths highlighted urban planning to rethink and rebuild cities to mitigate the pandemic and to create livable neighborhoods during future pandemics. The emergence of Dengue seasonally and the high number of victims and death rate is also critical health issue identified in Sri Lanka. After the emergence of covid-19, the urban areas have been highly affected and the urban households, lifestyles of people, and the corruption of countries’ economies caused an energy crisis, food crisis, unemployment, and increasing death rates that created a whole new chapter in urban planning to create comprehensive planning approaches to get back to normal while considering the risk factors. As Dengue fever is also more critical in the Sri Lankan context, the need for studies to identify the factors, and elements in urban areas including neighborhood patterns for the spread of Covid-19 and Dengue Fever is quite significant as a planner. The study focuses on the impact of urban elements, factors, and the different neighborhood patterns within the selected areas in Colombo-15 for the spread of covid-19 and dengue. The outputs indicate the vulnerability of different neighborhood patterns highlighting the measures that should be taken to mitigate the spread in the future. According to the study, the spread of dengue and covid-19 among people depends on the quality of housing and the characteristics of the neighbourhood and the comparatively high spread of diseases identified in horizontal neighborhoods with single-story housing and poor living condition.

“There never will be complete equality until women themselves help to make laws and elect lawmakers.” – Susan B. Anthony Women’s struggle for equality is an issue that has persisted in the United States from its inception. At the first Women’s Rights Convention in Seneca Falls in July 1848, Elizabeth Cady Stanton proposed a revision to the Declaration of Independence stat¬ing “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men and women are created equal.” This statement was included in “The Declaration of Rights and Sentiments” signed by 100 of the 300 attendees to the convention. One of the most conten¬tious and debated articles in the document they signed was women’s suffrage. If this was the beginning, it certainly wasn’t the end. For the next 54 years Stanton fought for the right for women to vote along side her long time colleague Susan B. Anthony. Neither one would see the day when their life’s work on the part of the women’s suffrage movement would come to fruition.

Case presentation: A 77-year-old female patient, previously hypertensive, was admitted to the emergency room due to involuntary movements in the right upper limb onset one day ago with no other associated complaints. During neurological examination she presented hemiparesis and hypoesthesia in the right dimidium of the body besides involuntary movements in the ipsilateral hand. Skull magnetic resonance imaging evidences hyperintensity on T2/ FLAIR sequences in areas of periventricular and left parietal white matter in accordance to a previous ischemic event. Discussion: Dystonia is a movement disorder caused by involuntary muscle contractions leading to repetitive or abnormal movements. It is related to hereditary, idiopathic or acquired causes, including the ones related to brain lesions of cerebrovascular etiologies, such as ischemia, hemorrhage and arteriovenous malformation and aneurysm. The diagnosis of dystonia is made clinically. The treatment consists of the application of botulinum toxin, oral medications such as clonazepam and baclofen. Conclusion: A challenge due to the numerous etiologies involved, dystonias are movement disorders that negatively impact patients’ self-esteem and independence. The present case is extremely relevant considering there was no reported prior complaint of focal neurological deficit, although an area consistent with cerebral ischemia was identified on cranial magnetic resonance imaging, correlated as the causative factor leading to the involuntary movement.

Abstract:
Pressure ulcers remain a significant secondary complication for many wheelchair users, having significant adverse impacts on the health, function and independence of wheelchair users. Research suggests that both the magnitude and duration of loading on tissues can lead to tissue necrosis. This motivated research to measure the in-seat movement of wheelchair users as a means to characterize time of loading. During these research activities, the consistent finding was that persons were not adhering to their weight shift regimens as taught during rehabilitation. This served as motivation to develop a consumer product to inform users of their activities. The transition from a research tool to a consumer product is endowed with challenges. This paper describes the technology as well as the activities required to make this transition. Specific design challenges included attention to usability and device engagement and the need for near real-time data management and analysis to inform users of their in-seat movements.

Abstract:
In this paper I examine an open letter known as the “Letter of 66”. According to the dominant interpretation of the letter, its publication in 1988 triggered the movement for national liberation of Romanians from Eastern Moldavia, which was then part of USSR, and that culminated with the declaration of independence and founding of Republic of Moldova. I argue that in addition to triggering the national liberation movement, the “Letter” represents the birth certificate of Moldovan democracy and offers a model of governance based on scientific expertise and moral and civic values. In support of this thesis, I show that the demands made in the “Letter” rejected the official Soviet view on the Romanian identity of the language spoken by Moldovan from USSR. In this way, the demands are affirmations of fundamental human liberties, which represents a first democratic exercise.

Abstract:
Donning and doffing procedures are among of the five basic activities of daily living that define the degree of autonomy and independence. In this paper, we produce an analysis of the movements performed in donning/doffing procedures and identify which are the main difficulties in patients with frozen shoulder. Therefore, we utilized five pieces of clothing for the upper body with different characteristics that we consider relevant for the evaluation of movement and to identify range of motion limitations: poncho, tank-top, blouse with long sleeves, batwing blouse and front-opening blouse. Then, we observed a group of women during donning/doffing procedures, connecting the performed movements to the characteristics of those garments. As main results, we verified that the poncho and the batwing blouse are more appropriate for users with a frozen shoulder. Among the possible conclusions, we infer that the inclusion of users before and during the design process, through the methodology of participatory design, provides greater interaction in the whole process and increases the chances of success of the product to the real needs of the targeted user. In association, the inclusion of a kinesiological study in the design of clothes increases efficiency donning/doffing procedures, ensuring greater autonomy to the user.

Abstract:
This report deals with the repercussions of the war in Ukraine on the national conservative parties, as well as the radical and extremist right, in Croatia. It focuses closely on these actors’ attempts to draw parallels between the conflict in Ukraine and Croatia’s war of independence in the 1990s, known as the “Homeland War” (Domovinski rat). It also seeks to place into context what, if anything, is so “specific” about the activism of this party family concerning the war in Ukraine – including any “dissident” stances in comparison to the political mainstream. This report covers the most established parties of the Croatian Far Right but focuses most closely on the national conservative Homeland Movement (Domovinski Pokret). This report clarifies how this party: 1) seeks to draw a linkage between the developments in Ukraine and the identity and memory politics of the Homeland War; and 2) utilizes this process in its endeavour to antagonize Croatia’s ruling party, the Croatian Democratic Union.

Abstract:
The Five Star Movement (M5S) is one of those populist parties that is often misunderstood. Throughout the years, the media, independent journalists, and bloggers—as well as well-known academics and commentators—have struggled to define this “strange political creature.” Some have labeled it a polymorphous “hybrid-party” and others a “movement-party.” The mistake most analysts make when discussing the M5S is that they somehow forget the party’s left-wing origins.
