Abstract:
The study presents a comprehensive analysis of independent infinitive structures with nonfinite predicates, focusing on their syntactic, pragmatic, and stylistic aspects. These clauses, which exhibit interrogative and exclamatory features, are characterized by non-standard syntax, granting them a unique place within the system of English sentences. The paper categorizes these units into three groups: 1) Infinitive structures with the particle “to” at the front (To + infinitive); 2) Infinitive structures with a topical subject (S + to + infinitive); 3) Structures with “Why + (not) + infinitive?

This paper gives an account of some restrictions in the application of null VP Anaphor in English infinitives, showing how the Internal Subject Hypothesis and the Split Inflection Hypothesis affect the assumptions on which previous analyses were based. The ECP and the temporal interpretation of the infinitive are demonstrated to be irrelevant for licensing null VPs in English infinitival clauses. It is shown that VP Anaphor is better analyzed as involving deletion at the PF level or on the way to it, and that it can be applied if the antecedent and target VP are "identical" at LF. It

ABSTRACTThe effect of neighborhood density on optional infinitives was evaluated for typically developing (TD) children and children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI). Forty children, twenty in each group, completed two production tasks that assessed third person singular production. Half of the sentences in each task presented a dense verb, and half presented a sparse verb. Children's third person singular accuracy was compared across dense and sparse verbs. Results showed that the TD group was significantly less likely to use optional infinitives with dense, rather than sparse verbs. I

Linguists’ interest in the indefinite form of the verb remains undiminished – this topic is still relevant today. Linguists continue to debate its functional use. The syntactic multi functionality of the independent infinitive and the resulting disagreements among linguists give rise to disputes when differentiating between impersonal and infinitive sentences. Interest in the semantics of infinitive sentences – which are diverse, multifaceted, and thus open to an expanding list of semantic groups within the system of infinitive sentences and their descriptions – doesn’t fade away. This paper is focused on the phenomenon of functional-grammatical maximalism of the independent infinitive, exemplified by Joseph Brodsky’s poetic texts. The expression in them of three predicative categories of the infinitive – time, person and mood – is analysed. The specific features of this expression include: a unique temporal plane of action, expressed in a literary text by the infinitive through its internal time, i.e. the aspect; a composite image of the subject of an infinitive text, i.e. a meta-subject, in which the Self of the speaker merges with the Self of the listener, represente

We consider model-independent pathwise hedging of contingent claims in discrete-time markets, in the framework of infinite-dimensional linear programmes (LP). The dual problem can be formulated as optimization over the set of martingale measures subject to market constraints. Absence of model-independent arbitrage plays a crucial role in ensuring that both the primal and the dual problems are well posed and there is no duality gap. In fact we show that different notions of model-independent arbitrage are required to prove duality results in various settings. We then specialize this duality the

Verbs in Arabic get separated into three forms: the perfect, the imperfect, and the imperative, a version derived from the imperfect.
