Full textSince 2006 the indigenous political vote has split between Pachakutik and Alianza País (AP). The latter is a political movement led by Rafael Correa, currently president of Ecuador. The article seeks an explanation for this distribution of the vote, examining the political behavior of the indigenous people of the Otavalo and Cotacachico unties of the northern Ecuadorean highlands. It argues that the support for Correa can be explained by several factors: (1) the historical relationship between indigenous people and the State; (2) an electoral behaviour that combines trust in ethnic leaders and pragmatism; and (3) an expectation of «more state presence». The study is based on two surveys of leaders and local population, participant observation and interviews, as well as a document review.

Birungi, Francine Mwayuma. "An evaluation of Isoniazid prophylaxis treatment and the role of Xpert MTB/RIF test in improving the diagnosis and prevention of tuberculosis in children exposed to index cases with pulmonary tuberculosis in Kigali, Rwanda." University of the Western Cape, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/11394/6880.
Full textBackground: Tuberculosis (TB) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among children (<15 years) in resource-limited countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) identified active contact screening and isoniazid preventive therapy (IPT) as essential actions for detecting and preventing childhood TB. Despite their benefits and inclusion in the policy of most National TB Programme (NTP) guidelines of the resource-limited countries, there is still a wide gap between policy and implementation. The implementation of contact screening for active case finding might be improved by the decentralised use of the Xpert MTB/RIF test in gastric lavage (GL) specimens, but this has not been previously assessed. Furthermore, although the provision of IPT to eligible child contacts has been a focus for implementation by the NTP of Rwanda since 2005, implementation has not previously been evaluated. The assessment of IPT uptake and adherence as well as associated factors could be informative for the programme. Therefore, we aimed to assess the diagnostic yield of Xpert MTB/RIF in GL among child contacts with suspected pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and the uptake of and adherence to IPT by eligible child contacts to make recommendations towards strengthening TB diagnostic and prevention in children in Kigali, Rwanda. Methods: The proposed study setting Kigali, the capital city of Rwanda, was the location for 30% of the national PTB case notifications in 2013-14.A conceptual framework based on ecological theory was used in this study. Quantitative, qualitative and mixed (using both quantitative and qualitative research methods in one study) research methods were applied, and various research designs were used depending on the research questions. The study involved a cross-sectional analysis of the diagnostic yield of Xpert MTB/RIF in GL among all child contacts with suspected TB. Across-sectional and prospective cohort study design was used to assess the uptake and adherence of IPT among eligible child contacts.

Full textBased on a detailed ethnography of circulation of labourers, originated from a village of Telangana (Andhra Pradesh) and employed in rural and urban construction work, this thesis explores the social, political and economical worlds of labour migrants and the dynamics and everydayness of intercastes and classes relationships. Through a fieldwork carried out on both spaces of work and life at the destination places and village setting, this research contributes to debates on the transformation of labour relations in contemporary India by examining issues such as bonded labour, daily wage work, patron-client relations, mediation and low-caste ascendancy. The study of social and cultural contexts of labour and migration experiences, toil, debt, recruitment, trust and modes of resistance and domination brings material for a critic of theoretical divide between free and unfree labour. It shows how an approach through the continuum of labour and migration forms gives a better account of micro-hierarchies, dependency, social mobility and authority. This research then explores the social and political dimensions of the return of migrants and their quest for multiple and temporary protection and dependency taking place in the village. The everydayness of power relationships and the reinvestment of migrants into village activities are examined through the practices and discourses of a political intermediary, the public contestation and friendship after alcohol consumption, the aspirations of rural youth and political-religious conflicts. This sheds new light on the logics of acceptation, domination and resistance around access to local resources (development programs, NGO’s, political parties) cornered by dominant groups and on the overlapping of the politicisation of low-caste and of the reconstruction of patronage in the village

Full textThis thesis aims at questioning the notion of brahmanical identity in India today. Our study is based on the contextualisation of discourses coming from contemporary urban middle class brahmins settled in Delhi, Agra and Chennai (Madras). It falls within the framework of an analysis of the cultural context of politics. Brahmins, originally in charge of the sacred sphere, followed different paths, creating therefore many subcultures and ways of apprehending the world. Our approach consists in highlighting factors through which such differenciations can be explained. It deals with understanding processes of identity building. Brahmin identity is not an absolute notion. The various manifestations of brahmanical identities have to be taken in a defined context, in connection with specific expressions of otherness. .

His shrine appears simultaneously as a dargah or grave of a muslim saint and as a hindu temple. The oral tradtion of the meghwals and of their priests, the kamads, reveals the ismali origin of ramdeo hinself, as a historical figure, and of the sect he founded. The religious syncretism which characterizes the movement at its very beginning gradually tends to vanish and evolve towards a more and more hinduized structure; the untouchables, however, continue to worship ramdeo as their tutelary deity as far as his tradition serves to strengh then their caste identity

Full textThe caste conflict between Maravar and Pallar, well known in South India, is not yet analysed by sociologists and anthropologists. One of the castes in the conflict, the Maravar, occupies a position of domination in the social hierarchy, whereas the Pallar are considered as an inferior caste. In fact, Pallar are qualified as impure and treated as untouchables. Accumulating progressively economic capital and elaborating their knowledge about the modern world by education, the Pallar protest against the traditional social hierarchy and the practice of untouchability. The Maravar, who are superior and dominant to the Pallar, unleash violence against them to put them back in their traditional place in the social hierarchy. Thus, the Pallar by their protest and non submision to the Maravar, create a conflictual situation. This thesis uses the concept of "field" of Pierre Bourdieu to analyse the various fondamental factors and to identity the social basis of the conflict

Full textThis thesis questions through history, social practices and politics the diversifivation of the links of identity of the Pramalai Kallar sub-caste in central Tamil Nadu in order to grasp what constitues belonging to a birth group in contemporary India. The reconstitution of the Pramalai Kallar' sociological landscape is necessary to understand the nature and the structure of belonging, by locating and distinguishing precisely three interrelated morphosociological categories: the caste and the caste-cluster. Through ethnographic inquiry, historiographical and political data, we identify the ressources of collective identification which contribute to the reproduction, the regulation and the promotion of belonging to the borth group(s). Therefore, in the wider context of transformation of Indian society, it is necessary to grasp the contemporary parameters which modify, fragilise or renforce differentiated registers of belonginig "caste"

In recent decades, many studies have focused on the forecasting of volatility. The GARCH model provides the heteroskedasticity of the asset returns. But estimating the volatility can be difficult, because volatility is not observable. Chou(2005) proposed CARR (Conditional Autoregressive Range) model to explain the time-varying of range. In this study, We use CARR model by using TAIEX index data from 1999 to 2011, to compare different distribution (exponential, Weibull and Gamma distribution). And combine the CARR model and GARCH model, to compare the out-of-sample forecasts of Range-based GARCH and Return-based GARCH. We find the Gamma distribution is the best of those assumptions. And GARCH-CARR model provides the better prediction of volatility.

This study investigates whether utilizing data on net open interest of foreign investors, of dealers, and of investment trust could earn extra positive rate of return on Taiwan Stock Index Futures and MSCI Taiwan Stock Index Futures investment. I use daily price data on Taiwan Stock Index Futures and MSCI Taiwan Stock Index Futures from July 2, 2007 to April 15, 2015. The ordinary least squares (OLS) regression is used, where I try many models with various combinations of the changes of daily/weekly net open interest of foreign investors, dealers, and investment trust. Also, various lag periods are tried. In total, I make and test twenty-six models and calculate their out-of-the-sample rate of returns. The empirical conclusions are as follows: Twenty investment models can achieve more than 50% forecast correct rate. In particular, for daily investment, the best model for Taiwan Stock Index Futures is to utilize the changes of daily net open interest of foreign investors, of dealers, and of investment trust. In my sample, this model earns an out-of-the-sample annual rate of return of 19.88%. For MSCI Taiwan Stock Index Futures, the best investment model is to utilize the change of weekly accumulative net open interest of foreign investors and the weekly accumulative return of MSCI Taiwan Stock Index Futures. It achieves an out-of-the-sample annual rate of return of 19.44%. For weekly investment, the best model for Taiwan Stock Index Futures investment is to utilize the change of weekly accumulative net open interest of investment trust. It achieves an out-of-the-sample annual rate of return of 14.09%. For MSCI Taiwan Stock Index Futures, the best model utilizes the change of weekly accumulative net open interest of dealers, and achieves an out-of-the-sample annual rate of return of 12.93%.

There are lots of area which does not have complete credit market. To analyze the credit risk of these area, first we have to construct these credit markets correctly. This article extends the study method of Lee, Chung and Tao (2011). By Moody’s KMV structure model, we can price a credit portfolio similar to CDX. NA. IG by simulation. In order to reduce the variation of simulation results, I used analytic solution of default time and variance reduction method when sampling. Then calculation by J.P. Morgan''s LHP (Large Homogeneous Pool) model, we get the base correlation with respect to each upper attachment point. Finally, we can analyze the credit index, base correlation and the upfront fee for each tranche. The empirical results uses Taiwan''s market data. There are two samples: first is the listed and the OTC financial firms; another sample is the industrial firms of constituent stocks of Taiwan 50 index. It shows that this study method is credible. Moreover, this method also shows the difference impacts of big financial events (such as financial crisis) between financial firms and industrial firms.

This paper aims to utilize technical indicators to construct trading strategies. Through trading simulations and comparisons, Some feasible trading strategies has proposed according to the results Moving average (single, two, three MA), KD, RSI,% R, and MACD are chosen indicators. The data studied is Taiwan Stock Index Futures between 2009/1/5-2011/12/30. The empirical results show single MA test with long parameters is more profitable. In addition, two MA have less repeatedly signals, and three MA can determine the trend. Through trading test, we do not recommend to use only one single technical indicators like KD, RSI,% R, MACD, as the only one principle. Finally, 10MA+KD and 10MA+RSI are used to analyze agricultural stocks, Charoen Pokphand, Sinon, Taiwan Fertilizer. The result of 10MA + KD profit better than the result of10MA + RSI. Investors should use MA with KD indicator in a short time period of stock trading.

The purposes of the present paper are four folds: (1) Examine price manipulation on the settlement dates of TAIFEX TAIEX futures (TAIFEX TF) and SGX MSCI Taiwan Index futures (SGX TF). (2) Inquire the predictability on the binary directions of either pulling up index or squeezing down index on the settlement dates via an industry based model. (3) Survey the effects of the settlement institutional changes on the alienation of the price manipulation phenomenon. The empirical data used in this study spans 1998.7.22-2005.10.19, covering the available eighty six settlement dates. The main evidences on this study are: (1) there do exist the expiration date effects for TAIFE FX and SGX TF, in particular, MGX TF showing strong significance in the empirical test. (2) The industry based five factors model renders over 70% prediction accuracy via the Logistic regression and over 80% for a feedforward artificial neural network. Moreover, the predictor variable of the previous price change of US Dow Jones Industry Average Index exhibits a pompous explaining power to the binary direction of price manipulation. (3) Changes in settlement mechanisms do improve the price volatility in the settlement dates for both TAIFE FX and SGX TF. Specifically, after adopting the fifteen minutes average prices rule, TAIFEX TX has significant reduced its volatility since then. Meanwhile, TAIEX taking pre-close five minutes call price also has been improving the price volatility on MSCI TF settlement dates. Both mechanism dummy variables have significantly improved the price manipulation on futures settlement dates.And(4)Simulation of trading profit shows that the market model gains significantly higher profit than a naïve trading strategy does.

Background In addition to other risk factors such as HBV and HCV infection, family history is also demonstrated to be associated with the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Therefore, screening for high-risk subjects ascertained through family index case with sonography is regarded as one of approaches to identify early-detected HCC cases. Evaluation of effectiveness of ultrasonography screening and the better understanding of disease progression of HCC using such kind of data have significant implication for early detection of HCC cases among these high-risk subjects. Aims The aims of this study are therefore to (1)assess whether an index approach has a high yield of detecting HCC cases compared with the routine-finding in the absence of organized screening program; (2)elucidate the association between demographic features, ALT, AST, alpha-fetoprotein, degrees of relative relationship, and occurrence of HCC cases or deaths; (3)quantify the disease natural history of HCC disease progression, the program sensitivity, and positive predictive value; (4)project mortality reduction as a result of ultrasonography screening with adjustment for these putative risk factors and lead-time bias. Methods A total of 20,348 first- or second-degree relatives of patients with HCC diagnosed in multiple hospitals were enrolled in a multicentre hospital-based ultrasonography screening between 1992 and 1997. The cohort was linked with Taiwan Cancer Registry and Taiwan Mortality Registry for further confirmation of clinically-detected cases and death. We used logistic regression to identify factors affecting the detection in the prevalent screen, and proportional hazards regression models for the factors affecting the incidence of and mortality from HCC. Two statistical models, early indicator of the proportion of post-screening cases to the expected incidence rate conjugated with Poisson model and multi-state stochastic modeling, were used to estimate mean sojourn time (MST), sensitivity, and positive predictive values of the screening program. Results After adjusting for the well-established biological environmental factors, we found degrees of relative relationship was significantly associated with cases detected in the screening (odds ratio (OR)=4.0 (95% confidence interval : 1.84-8.53) for siblings compared to offspring, and 4.16 (95% confidence interval : 1.35-12.88) for parents compared to offspring). For the incidence of interval cancer or post-screening cases, degrees of relative relationship were also significant factors (hazard ratio (HR) of siblings versus offspring was 1.82 (95% confidence interval : 1.49-2.21), and of parents versus offspring was 1.62 (95% confidence interval : 1.14-2.31). However, it is not significantly associated with survival of HCC. Level of education was found associated with HCC survival. The lower level of education, the poorer survival was found. Regarding the screening findings, the detection rate at prevalence screen was 2 per 1000 (41/20348). It decreased to 0.93 per 1000, and 0.75 per 1000 at the second and third or further subsequent screening. The incidence rate of interval cancer and post screening cases were 1.87 and 2.10, respectively. As regards the efficacy of screening with ultrasonography, compared to post-screening cases, screening detected and interval cancers combined had a 27% lower risk of dying from HCC (95% confidence interval : 1%-46%), with adjustment for other biological environmental risk factores, degrees of relative relationship and lead-time. The estimated mean sojourn time and sensitivity were 0.35 years and 61.2% with Poisson model, and 0.76 and 79.4% with the multistate stochastic model. The MST together with the program sensitivity yielded 24.2% and 67.7% of two positive predictive values for the Poisson model and three-state stochastic model, respectively. Conclusion This study demonstrated ultrasonography screening can lead to a 27% (95% confidence interval : 1%-46%) statistically significant mortality reduction with adjustment for family history, other environmental factors, and lead time obtained from natural history. The estimated parameters of disease natural history suggests the intensive screening may even lead to a large benefit.

In mid-2006, American housing price declined sharply. As a result, the default risk of those original sub-prime loans or refinancing loans was climbing. In 2007, US subprime loan crisis were out of control and negatively affected the US economy. This led to global economic panic, global stock selloffs, higher unemployment rate and financial institution bankruptcy. Thus the purpose of this study is to hopefully prevent similar event from happening again, basing on the examination of relationships between stock index and real exchange rate in sub-prime crisis. This study will focus on reviewing top 10 American trading countries including Canada, China, Mexico, Japan, Germany, United Kingdom, South Korea, France, Taiwan and Brazil. The studying periods are prior to subprime crisis (2005-2006), during subprime crisis (2007-2008) and after subprime crisis (2009-2010). Also, we will analyze the relationships between stock index and real exchange rate on those 10 countries during those 3 periods respectively. First, the unit root tests are used to investigate if all of the series are stable. Then, the existence of co-integrated relationship between stock index and real exchange rate is examined. We further use Vector Error Correction Model or VAR model, causal relationship test, impulse response analysis and Forecast Error Variance Decomposition. The study shows that all series in our data were unstable, stock index and real exchange rate does not have co-integrated relationship and there are different causalities and impulse responses prior, during and after the subprime crisis.

This paper uses the VaR approach to determine the filter ratio to examine the trading performance. Based on the relative risk management on VaR, we use the ED, EQMQ, EWMA and GARCH (1, 1) to derive the filter ratio. We use the major stock market index futures-S&P500, Nikkei225, TAIEX, KOSPI200, Hang-Seng, Straits as research samples. In the meanwhile, we also use the Static and Dynamic models with four approaches- ED, EQMA, EWMA and GARCH (1, 1) separately to generate the filter ratio and also examine the trading performance. The results show that the negative relationship between the trading frequency and performance exists for ED, EQMA, EWMA and GARCH (1, 1) respectively due to the trading cost. The results also show that the positive relationship between the volatility and filter ratio. In the meantime, we find there is a significant difference between the Static model and Dynamic model on the performance. The performance of Dynamic model is better, especially for ED, EQMA and GARCH (1, 1). Also the performance of filter-rule trading strategy is better than the one of B&H (Buy and Hold). What’s more, abnormal returns by filter rule exist respectively in S&P500, Nikkei225 and Hang-Seng.

This study explores the Baltic Dry Index (BDI) Index and its index constitutes the Baltic Capesize Index (BCI), the Baltic Panama Ultimate Shipping Freight Index (BPI) and the Baltic Ultra-lightweight Ultimate Shipping Freight Index (BSI) for Taiwan Navigation Company and Chinese Maritime Transport Company of the bulk carrier Corporate between stock price and business performance relevance. Verify that the above companies have stock prices, operating income, net income, earnings per share, and return on assets during the same period. Observe BDI、BCI、BPI and BSI. The impact of the use of Taiwan Economic Joural Co., Ltd. (TEJ) from First quarter of 2009 to The third quarter of 2018, quarterly BDI、BCI、BPI、BSI, Taiwan Navigation Company. and Chinese Maritime Transport Company Stock Price, Operating Income, Net Income ,Earnings Per Share (EPS), and Return On Assets (ROA) data were analyzed by linear regression and Durbin-Watson verification. The empirical results obtained the following several conclusions: 1.The stock prices of Chinese Maritime Transport Company and Taiwan Navigation Company show that and BDI, BCI, BPI and BSI indices are very significant and do have a correlation. It is recommended that investors who want to invest in the stocks of the above two bulk shipping companies can refer to the above index analysis and buy and selling time. 2.The Operating Income, Net Income, EPS, and ROA of the two companies and the BDI、BCI、BPI、BSI indices are highly significant. The related variables of the operating performance of the two companies are behind the BDI、BCI、BPI、BSI indices for at least 2 seasons, and the two companies have an effect of time lag. By observing the BDI、BCI、BPI、BSI indices, we can speculate on the future revenue, profit and business status of the above companies, it is recommended to observe the long-term observation of the investors and banks of the above two bulk shipping companies to conduct credit business. The four indexes of BDI, BCI, BPI and BSI index can be included in the observation as an assessment of the future operation of the above companies. One of the performance indicators.

Referred to series studies of indoor air quality (IAQ) in architecture environ-ment control, this study emphasized on office buildings of 3 industrial parks in the south of Taiwan, investigated from November 1998 to March 1999. It comprised questionnaire survey, detailed monitoring, and statistical analysis of 4 office buildings, including 9 rooms. In this survey, indoor and outdoor air pollutants (PM10, CO, CO2, SO2, NO2, HCHO, VOCs), air temperature, related humidity, and air velocity were monitored, and air change rate was measured. Based on the theory review of risk assessment, tracer gas concentration decay method, and thermal comfort, the investigated data were converted into a set of sub-indices, including carcinogen risk (Risk), hazard index (HI), air change rate (ACH), and predicted mean vote (PMV). By the results of comparing those 4 sub-indices with occurrence frequency of sick building syndrome (SBS) analyzed from questionnaire, we proceed the quantitative assessment on the IAQ of these cases, and establish regression models related to SBS. These models can be used to gauge indoor air pollutants (IAPs), ACH, and thermal comfort of indoor air environment, and be the basic reference of ‘healthy’ building design. Our major findings were as below: 1. The questionnaire survey found that 58% of the tenants contracted at least one of 18 syndromes as NIOSH lists. In addition, by the measured results, all of the means of IAP concentration were lower than the adapted threshold. And PMV showed that the rooms got a little hot. 2. The mean values of ACH were lower than Building Criteria in Taiwan, but equal to or higher than ASHRAE 62R-1996 and building code in Japan. Because IAQ was under control, the definition and magnitude of ‘air change requirement’ in Taiwan Building Criteria should be revised necessarily. 3. We assumed a weighted index, SBSw, based on SBS ratio multiplied by SBS occurrence frequency. After conversion and statistical analysis, we found that SBSw was significant correlative to HI. (R2=0.7372, F-value=19.63>F0.95(1,7)= 5.59) 4. Synthesizing indoor air-environment sub-indices-Risk, HI, ACH, and PMV, we proposed an index to predict SBSw. It’s named ‘Indoor Air-environment Index (IAI)’. According to different health effects, IAI contains carcinogen index IAI(carc) and non-carcinogen index IAI(conc). The former can explain 65.6% of SBS occurrence frequency, the latter can explain 75.0%.

With an effort to reduce growing health care costs, DRGs/PPS has been implemented in U.S. . However, patients cared in hospitals are supposed to suffer from a wide variety of different diseases and conditions, HCFA has developed an indicator(Case-Mix Index; CMI) to recognize the difference of relative costliness of hospitals from the average consuming of resources during case mix. It will reflect the average case-mix for all hospitals to adjust for differences in hospital costs that result from the very differences in the type and mix of cases treated by various hospitals. In order to recognize the case-mix complexity of different hospitals in Taiwan, we tried to apply CMI developed by HCFA and chose one medical center (hospital A) and two regional hospitals (hospital B and C) haphazardly in Taipei city to calculate their CMIs by the data of inpatients(excluding self-paying inpatients) actually from July to December, 1995. We find that CMI for hospital A(1.2210) bigger than the counter parts for hospital B (0.9159) and hospital C (0.8631). It corresponded to original hypothesis: medical center deal with more complicated cases with higher CMI than that for regional hospitals. If the more complicated cases need more intensive medical care, then it could be concluded to that the sequence in medical care ability is: hospital A > hospital B > hospital C. We also used DRGs of three hospitals as" title " and the multiplicity of their relative weight and case numbers as" value " to analyze the value distribution of these three hospitals. We have found the highest 20% values of DRGs of these hospitals having occupied more than 70% of total values in each hospital. It has met Pareto Principle and could be referred to hospital management.

The study takes the SIMEX Taiwan Stock Index Futures and Taiwan Stock Index as the objectives. The major purpose focused on examine the relationship between these two markets'' prices, discussing the causality between these two markets with VAR( Vector Auto-Regressive) model, and providing some suggestions for investing in these two markets. The data was covered from Jan. 9, 1997 through Mar. 16, 1998, with total 332 sets of market price data. The results showed that the closing index of Taiwan Stock Index Futures andthe opening index of Taiwan Stock Index existed a co-integration. From the lagof the VAR model, we found that the closing index of Futures and the closing index of Stock showed a feedback relationship; the closing index of Futures ledthe first period and the 5th period of opening index of Futures; the closingindex of Futures led the 2nd period and the 5th period of opening index ofStock; the closing index of Stock and the opening index of Futures wereindependent; and the opening index of Futures led the 4th period of openingindex of Stock. From the Decomposition of Variance analysis, we found that no matter whichTaiwan Stock Index Futures opening and closing Index or Taiwan Stock Index opening and closing index were mainly affected by the closing index of Taiwan Stock Index Futures. From the impulse response function analysis, we found that only the closing index of Taiwan Stock Index Futures showed a positiveresponse, indexes showed both positive and negative response.
