A hand written collection catalogue in the Institute of Palaeontology of the Museum of Natural History, Berlin, whose origin was previously unclear, is identified as a catalogue of the fossil collection of the Society of the Friends of Natural History Research in Berlin (Gesellschaft Naturforschender Freunde zu Berlin), foundet in 1773. This "Index petrefactorum" from the end of the 18th century documents the extent and state of development of the collection. The author of the catalogue was Friedrich Wilhelm Siegfried (1734–1809) who was a full member of the society from the time of its founding. Among the objets listed in the catalogue it can be shown that several pieces can still be found today in the collections of the Institute of Palaeontology.

doi:10.1002/mmng.20040070105

Abstract:
The Hipparcos mission required the realisation of an Input Catalogue giving the positions of 100.000 stars (single or components of double and multiple systems) to an accuracy better than 1″5. At the start of this work (1981) no specific catalogue of double and multiple stars provided these data. The only general data base on double stars available to us, giving positions to ±1′, was the Index (1961,0) updated at the USNO by C. E. Worley till 1976,5 and of which a copy was communicated by P. Muller of the Observatoire de Meudon. It has then been decided to reformat this Catalogue in such a way as to allow the introduction of all necessary information for the mission. This permitted a correct cross-identification with the Hipparcos Input Catalogue (of finally 118.000 stars). It was later called: the Catalogue of the Components of Double and Multiple stars (CCDM). Since then, it has been developed and its aim remains to furnish the best accurate locations and descriptions of the double and multiple systems on the sky for all double and multiple star research.

Abstract:
Abstract The radio spectral index is a powerful probe for classifying cosmic radio sources and understanding the origin of the radio emission. Combining data at 147 MHz and 1.4 GHz from the TIFR GMRT Sky Survey (TGSS) and the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS), we produced a large-area radio spectral index map of ∼80 per cent of the sky (Dec. > − 40 deg), as well as a radio spectral index catalogue containing 1396 515 sources, of which 503 647 are not upper or lower limits. Almost every TGSS source has a detected counterpart, while this is true only for 36 per cent of NVSS sources. We released both the map and the catalogue to the astronomical community. The catalogue is analysed to discover systematic behaviours in the cosmic radio population. We find a differential spectral behaviour between faint and bright sources as well as between compact and extended sources. These trends are explained in terms of radio galaxy evolution. We also confirm earlier reports of an excess of steep-spectrum sources along the galactic plane. This corresponds to 86 compact and steep-spectrum source in excess compared to expectations. The properties of this excess are consistent with normal non-recycled pulsars, which may have been missed by pulsation searches due to larger than average scattering along the line of sight.

Abstract:
Abstract. This study presents a catalogue of synoptic patterns of torrential rainfall in northeast of the Iberian Peninsula (IP). These circulation patterns were obtained by applying a T-mode Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to a daily data grid (NCEP/NCAR reanalysis) at sea level pressure (SLP). The analysis made use of 304 days which recorded >100 mm in one or more stations in provinces of Barcelona, Girona and Tarragona (coastland area of Catalonia) throughout the 1950–2005 period. The catalogue comprises 7 circulation patterns showing a great variety of atmospheric conditions and seasonal or monthly distribution. Likewise, we computed the mean index value of the Western Mediterranean Oscillation index (WeMOi) for the synoptic patterns obtained by averaging all days grouped in each pattern. The results showed a clear association between the negative values of this teleconnection index and torrential rainfall in northeast of the IP. We therefore put forward the WeMO as an essential tool for forecasting heavy rainfall in northeast of Spain.

Lussky, Joan. "The Index Catalogue and Historical Shifts in Medical Knowledge, & Word Usage Patterns." dLIST, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/106349.

Abstract:
Faithful aggregated accounts of the advancement of science are invaluable for those setting scientific policy as well as scholars of the history of science. As science develops the scholarly communityiÌ s determination of the accepted knowledge undergoes shifts. Within medicine these shifts include our understanding of what can cause disease and what defines specific disease entities. Shifts in accepted medical knowledge are captured in the medical literature. The Index Catalogue of the Library of the Surgeon GeneraliÌ s Office, United States Army, published from 1880 -1961, is an extremely large index to medical literature. The newly digitized form of this index, referred to as the IndexCat, allows us a way to generate faithful accounts of the development of medical science during the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-centuries. My data looks at shifts within the IndexCat surrounding three disease entities: syphilis, Huntington's chorea, and beriberi, and their interactions with two disease causation theories: germ and hereditary, from 1880-1930. Temporal changes in the prominent subject heading words and title words within the literature of these diseases and disease theories corroborate qualitative accounts of this same literature, which reports the complex and sometimes oblique process of knowledge accretion. Although preliminary, my results indicate that the IndexCat is a valuable tool for studying the development of medical knowledge.

Abstract:
Early English poetry anthologies are important because they reflect the poetic taste of their age. This dissertation is a reference work on those anthologies--a bibliographical catalogue and first-line index of early printed anthologies of English poetry to 1640. There are four parts to the dissertation. The introduction gives an overview of the subject and relates it to larger critical issues, such as authorship, style, and the manuscript culture. Next is a short-title list of anthologies and their subsequent editions. Part Three is comprised of quasi-facsimile bibliographical descriptions of the first editions of the anthologies followed by the first lines of their poems in sequence. Last is a comprehensive index of all of the first lines of all of the anthologies. This reference work will be useful to scholars working with Renaissance lyric poetry.

Abstract:
The musicological community has long recognized the need for restrospective periodical indexing. Previous attempts to develop a system to allow access to this monumental documentary resource, however, have not been successful. Realizing the importance of international cooperation and concensus in this effort, the International Association of Music Libraries (IAML) and the International Musicological Society (IMS) approved the creation of the Repertoire international de la presse musicale (RIPM) in 1981 and 1982, respectively. RIPM's initial task was to develop an internationally sanctioned system for cataloguing and indexing writings on music in 19th-century periodical literature. Over the past seven years, RIPM collaborators have developed a system employing computer technology and laser printing techniques for producing computer-generated catalogues and indexes in a camera-ready format. Throughout the developmental stages, the initially proposed indexing methodology has undergone revisions. Moreover, steps towards the utilization of an entirely personal computer-based system of operations—as opposed to the initial mainframe-based system—have been taken. The aims of this thesis are two-fold: (1) to test the RIPM system through the production of a prototype volume, consisting of an annotated title catalogue and a keyword-author index, and (2) to produce an introductory study of the prototype journal, L' Art musical (Paris, 1860-70; 1872-94). The production of the prototype RIPM volume served to test the system in the following ways: (1) to identify problematic areas in RIPM methodology and production techniques, (2) to assay the treatment of journals with extensive publication runs generating large data bases, and (3) to attempt the first trial of an entirely PC-based system of operations. The introductory study of the prototype journal served: (1) to collate information of a biographical, historical, and contextual nature about the journal, its founders and publishers, (2) to analyze the type of subject matter in L'Art musical, and (3) to identify the major contributors. The production of the RIPM prototype led to a comprehensive assay of the system. The following refinements in RIPM methodology and design resulted: (1) several cataloguing situations, not previously encountered, necessitated editorial clarification and the creation of new formats of data entry, (2) the extensive size of the data base led to modifications in the designs of the catalogue and index to reduce the of computer-generated RIPM volumes, and (3) a standardization of editorial principles for French language RIPM volumes was effected. The introductory study of L'Art musical focuses on the journal's publishing history, format and frequency of publication, contents and type of subject matter, and identifies the major contributors, with brief biographical sketches. The study also offers an analysis of review formats, an examination of both the commercial and sociological influences on the type of contents and views expressed in the journal, and a listing of the music supplements offered to subscribers (Appendix I).

Full text
Abstract:
After checking in preliminary investigations, related to my Master Thesis, the absence of a full and orderly critical study on the use of Heraclitus in the work of Friedrich Nietzsche, we realized the need to develop a thorough investigation on the matter. This PhD thesis serves this need and contributes in the field of Nietzschean studies with a critical work that is presented and analysed according to the chronological order in which all the passages of the works and texts, for the lessons and lectures given by the author, containing allusions to Heraclitus, were written. Each of these passages has been contextualized and commented on in detail, reviewing related bibliographic sources and contrasting it with the most relevant contributions of the interpretive tradition, both for the Nietzschean studies and for those of Heraclitus, and then providing our own considerations on the meaning of the resource in each case. The comments of the various passages are complemented by the analysis of the allusions to Heraclitus contained in notes and posthumous fragments. In a document attached to the doctoral thesis I present a complete and chronologically ranked list of all the citations, thus facilitating a quick reference of the passages in question, as well as an overview of the processing of citations throughout the work of the author, along with the possibility to compare directly the allusions made in the annotations of the posthumous, and in the works and other texts, in a same chronological period. This research offers a full, systematic and chronologically ordered study on the reference to Heraclitus in all the work of the author, with precise indications on interest, meaning, and context of each one of the citations, allowing to show the real scope of the question from the evidence of the texts, in contrast with the frequent tendency to use citations in an isolated and superficial manner, or even subject to certain interpretive interests. I am also attaching an annex that addresses some issues arising from my exploration, which tend to create confusion, and to which a somewhat more detailed attention has been paid, helping to improve its understanding.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The thesis deals with epigraphical monuments of central city of České Budějovice up to 1900 and at the same time it tries to acquaint with the history of the city with the intention to medieval times and with its system of fortification. The thesis is divided to nine chapters. The history of medieval city of České Budějovice is described in the first chapter. The second chapter deals with city fortifications from its beginning to the present. The third chapter brings a summary of studies which deal with making accessible of the epigraphical monuments. The fourth chapter is about territory which determines the catalogue accessed area. Detailed catalogue principles which are used in the epigraphical catalogue, structure of particular catalogue records and classification of the epigraphical material are presented in next chapters of the thesis. The eighth chapter is the main part of this work. The catalogue brings 127 epigraphical inscriptions, both extant up to the present and also not extant which are situated in the determinate area. Last chapter contains indices which should make work with the catalogue easier. The conclusion summarizes the gained findings. List of sources and bibliography follow. The appendices conclude the thesis.
