Abstract:
This chapter presents an overview of contemporary Indian Buddhism, broadly conceived, highlighting several historical developments, transregional influences, and Indo-centric adaptations within the colonial and postcolonial context. As the “homeland” of Buddhism and central to various contemporary revitalization movements, two themes are of particular analytical importance to this chapter: the recovery and reconfiguration of Buddhist material objects and the importance of reinvention among a range of Western and Asian Buddhist actors. After situating Indian Buddhism within the context of Indian historiography and discussions around the decline of Buddhism, this chapter examines various ways Indian Buddhist sites, artifacts, and structures are reimagined and reconfigured under colonization, nation-building, and changing socioeconomic interests. Also covered are Buddhist movements within India such as the Ambedkar-inspired New Buddhism, the role of Tibetan Buddhist refugees, and how the valorization of India’s Buddhist pilgrimage geography intersects with state goals toward tourism development and heritage diplomacy in Asia.

Abstract:
This chapter takes up Bruce Lincoln’s idea of ritual as an “instrument of struggle” in order to examine the intense debates over animal sacrifice in modern India. Looking specifically at recent controversies surrounding sacrifice in the state of Assam, the chapter suggests that animal killing lies at the center of a much larger series of struggles over religious identity and the boundaries of the modern nation. Most recently, sacrifice has become central to debates over tourism and economic development in northeast India, as conservative Hindu politicians have tried to transform Assam into a new engine of national growth, while at the same time trying to purify the local practices of their messier and bloodier aspects.

Talbot, Ian, and Tahir Kamran. Colonial Lahore. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780190642938.001.0001.

Abstract:
There have been several studies of colonial Lahore in recent years. These have explored such themes as the city’s modernity, its cosmopolitanism and the rise of communalism which culminated in the blood- letting of 1947. This work moves away from the prism of the Great Divide of 1947 to examine the cultural and social connections which linked colonial Lahore with North India and beyond. Imperial globalisation globalization intensified long established exchanges of goods, people and ideas, despite portrayals of Lahore as inward looking and a world unto itself. The current volume is thus reflective of the concerns arising from the global history of Empire and the new urban history of South Asia. These are addressed in a series of thematic chapters, rather than in a narrative account of the city’s development during colonial rule. A number of previously neglected areas of Lahore’s history emerge in this volume that are suggestive of new avenues for research. These include the links between Lahore’s and Bombay’s early film industries; the growth of western tourism; the trans-regional opportunities for poets, musicians and sportsmen; the new patterns of religious pilgrimage; the consumption of foreign goods and finally, the growth of Lahore’s trans-regional revolutionary networks.
