Abstract:
Indian Armed Forces are one of the largest organizations around the globe. Joining the forces is based on the voluntary service. Hence, it is important and critical for the armed forces to attract skilled talent and also to retain the current employees. This research is based on the study of instrumental and symbolic attributes related to Indian Armed Forces as an employer brand. The attractiveness of the Indian Armed Forces as an employer for potential candidates and the current employees of the armed forces is also studied. A sample of 200 people was used (150 potential candidates and 50 current employees) for studying the perceptions of potential and current employees. Results showed that there is significant difference between the perceptions of potential candidates and current employees for the instrumental functions related to Indian Armed Forces. Potential candidates were more favourable towards the instrumental function. The perceptions regarding ‘symbolic functions’ and ‘the Indian Armed Forces attractiveness as an employer’ were explained in similar proportion between the potential candidates and the current employees.

Abstract:
Identity is a dynamic phenomenon constructed as a collective product of the actions, interactions, cognition and self-cognizance of human beings. In exploring identity as a product of individual factors and contextual - historical factors embedded in a socio-political context, this paper focuses on the contribution of the Kodavas, a community who form a substantial minority in the Kodagu (Coorg) district of Karnataka to the Indian Armed Forces. Speaking a separate language, adhering to a clan-based social structure, following a belief system that is at substantial variance to other parts of the state, and at times even asserting a historical origin exterior to India, the group carries a larger number of markers that has led them to be regarded and portrayed as one of India’s groups of ‘internal exotics’. Based on literature, this paper aims to bring to light the historical relationship of this community with the Armed Forces. Further, the paper also initiates a discussion on the current status of military fervor among the Kodava youth and the necessary measures to be taken to uphold the warrior spirit of the Kodavas.

Abstract:
The present selection system of the officer cadre of the Armed Forces has stood the test of time. However, owing to the transformations and developments in the society, a need was felt to upgrade this system. After a number of interactions and deliberations, a new programme called ‘De Novo system for the Selection of Personnel in the Armed forces’ was initiated. To identify the domains that need to be assessed through this system, job analysis was carried out. Data were collected from the presently employed officers of the Armed Forces, and the officers were asked to fill out survey performa, critical incidents record, task inventory and attribute questionnaire. Job analysis identified 5 domains of assessment, namely, cognition, affect, behaviour, psychomotor, and values. 16 Attributes of military leaders under these 5 domains were also identified. Tests were developed under the three techniques (psychological, group testing, and interview) to assess these 16 attributes and the 5 domains. The prototype of the tests was developed following an assessment centre approach and the trials for the same are due in the coming months.

Abstract:
The contemporary phase of the youth-led freedom movement in Indian Held Kashmir (IHK) is not confined to the armed rebellion by the Kashmiri youth but is also coupled with a non-violent approach using social media against the atrocities and human rights violations such as systematic torture, rape, extrajudicial killing, and prisoner abuse, by the committed by the Indian armed forces. Victims' stories have been well-documented and 're-packaged for the world community through social media. The freedom movement went through various phases throughout history, and the most recent phase was introduced in 2016 after the brutal killings carried out by the Indian armed forces that included Burhan Muzaffar Wani, a youth-icon and a freedom fighter who used social media as a communication tool. The use of modern communication technologies like social media ensures that the narrative of the people of Kashmir regarding the freedom from the illegal occupation of Kashmir and suppression by Indian security forces would spread all around the world. This paper applies social movement framing analysis to this contemporary freedom movement in IHK to better understand the ways in which it is being re-defined by activists through exposure and affiliation to other transnational protest movements and re-framed in a manner that stresses the universal applications of contemporary human rights mobilizations.

Abstract:
The Indian defense sector is growing at an unprecedented rate in comparison with other leading countries. India is ranked as the 5th largest investor in defense globally. India established itself as the World’s largest arms importer, with 70 percent of its defense procurement coming from foreign companies. The threat from China and Pakistan and their growing defense capabilities have led to a modernization drive; the present government has increased its allocation for capital expenditure to buy fi ghter jets and expand the naval force. In general, several pressing security issues largely determine the direction of India’s security policy and its military spending. First, the insurgency in Kashmir and the related confl ict with Pakistan remain unsolved. Indian armed forces are steadily undergoing modernization, such as futuristic soldier systems and missile defense systems. However, the allocation of resources has been severely inadequate in the recent past that fails to address the various needs of the armed forces in India. This paper will focus on the distribution of funds between capital and revenue expenditure and its significance.

Abstract:
IntroductionIn India, glaucoma is the third most common cause of blindness, reflecting both its asymptomatic presentation and a lack of knowledge in the general population. No previous published data of glaucoma awareness among the Indian Armed forces personnel exists, who constitute a unique group consisting of people drawn from all parts of the country and society.MethodsBilingual questionnaires were distributed to 496 serving Army, Navy and Air Force personnel serving in units local to the Zonal military hospital in North India. Having heard of the term glaucoma resulted in the subject being ‘glaucoma aware’, while ‘knowledge of glaucoma’ required at least three out of six questions to be answered correctly.Results110/496 (22%) participants were found to be glaucoma aware, while knowledge of glaucoma was found in 60/496 (12%) participants.ConclusionsThis study demonstrates that glaucoma awareness and knowledge is high compared with rural or urban Indian populations. This is likely reflects the frequent health camps conducted by the armed forces and periodic medical examinations. However, these figures are still low compared with developed countries and likely reflects differences in education standards, socioeconomic status and differing influences of the media.

All three branches of the Indian armed forces have recently articulated the need to operate beyond the country's immediate borders. While the Indian military is highly unlikely to achieve its more ambitious power projection objectives in the medium term, the conventional wisdom that India's traditional foreign-policy orientation precludes military power projection is untenable, especially for an aspiring regional hegemon.

Abstract:
Purpose of the study: This study aims to analyze and compare the media images and coverage of three countries regarding their security forces. For this purpose, researchers have examined the media image of the American Army in the New York Times, the Indian Army in Indian Express, and the Pakistani Army in The Dawn. Methodology: The researchers selected news stories of three sampled newspapers; New York Times, Indian Express, and The Dawn for one year from 1st January 2018 to 31st December 2018 purposively for the content analysis. Spearman correlations, central tendency, frames of the stories in terms of positive, negative, and neutral have been examined. The researchers have examined coverage patterns of security forces at the object, attribute, and network levels in the light of agenda-setting theory. Main Findings: There are significant differences in the image of the armed forces. Indian Express covered the Indian army positively with the special emphasis on the success of the armed in internal military operations and the glorification of the military leadership. Similarly, New York Times covered the American Army favourably with a particular focus on external military operations for peace and security purposes. Whereas, The Dawn covered Pakistan Army differently. Applications of this study: The study will be helpful and of great importance for media owners, media regulatory bodies, military establishments, foreign and international relations. The study will also be a significant contribution towards civil-military relationships in geostrategic locations of the sub-continent. Since these countries have been involved in war-on-terror in this region as far as peace and stability are concerned, the study will be a roadmap for the peacekeeping forces. Novelty/Originality of this study: Few research studies have been witnessed so far on the media image of these countries. This study is new and different in nature as the military image of three different countries in terms of civil-military relationship has been measured on their mainstream media.

Abstract:
Abstract More than many other armed conflicts of the modern era, the colonial wars/wars of empire fought by Western powers at the periphery of the world system over the past five centuries were defined by spatial categories. The problems of transoceanic or transcontinental power projection and the economic logic of the imperial system limited the military means employed on the periphery, making them often insufficient for the effective control of extended, inaccessible, and inhospitable spaces. Faced with an adversary capable of using these wide spaces to avoid decisive battle, the imperial military resorted to warfare against entire societies. Cognitively and mentally, Western armed forces experienced the periphery as an alien space, a space in which physical geography and human enemy seemed to be organically connected in opposing the invader. This perception of the peripheral space was not only partially responsible for atrocities, but could also result in warfare against nature itself.

Abstract:
Objective - "Change is the only constant" is a cliché but it is important to identify the factors which are changing to emerge as challenges before the military leadership of tomorrow. The societies are bound to be affected by the changes taking place in the environment. Generally, every society is affected by the four types of environmental factors. These are political, social, economic and technological. Since in India, democracy is deep rooted and the philosophy of the defence forces is same and has neither changed nor is likely to change, this factor is not under study here. So, the purpose is to study the impact of other environmental factors on selection of Defence Services Officers. Methodology/Technique - The study has been carried out by personally visiting all the Service Selection Centres of the Indian Armed Forces and presenting a questionnaire to large number of junior, middle and senior level serving and retired officers at various places. Only 449 officers responded which included 190 junior officers, 133 middle-level officers and 126 senior officers. The response was put through SPSS software system and analysed. Findings - The analysis clearly revealed that environmental changes in the society over a period of time do impact the qualities in the youth which have direct bearing on their selection for officers in the armed forces. Since the selection is based on finding the officers like qualities available or trainable in the youth, the impact of environmental factors is directly affecting the intake of the youth resulting in deficiency of officers' cadre in the armed forces. Novelty - The research contributes to develop scientific knowledge in environmental change effect on selection of defence officers. Type of Paper - Empirical Keywords: Qualities; Environment; Socio-Economic Changes; Armed Forces. JEL Classification: H56, J11.

Abstract:
More than half a century has elapsed since China and India fought a War in October–November 1962. The War saw the Chinese Army coming out with flying colours. India as a nation was shocked and had to strain every sinew to reorganise itself to win the ensuing wars with Pakistan in 1965 and 1971. There are many questions as regards the causes of the War, the events which preceded the conflict and what actually happened that led to the debacle. The article addresses these issues comprehensively and analyses the War in detail. Overall it was a failure to assess the Chinese threat in correct perspective. The Indian government did not expect China to fight a War against India. The obvious question to ask is what is the way ahead? The concluding portion of the article deals with the current situation and measures to be taken to deter China from undertaking a military adventure. There is a need to have a National Security Strategy as also leave no stone unturned to build our Comprehensive National Power. In this, our Armed Forces must be modernised to meet the Chinese forces. The Chinese Navy has of late gained strength and is making forays into the Indian Ocean. We should be prepared for this aspect and build our military diplomacy with the United States, Japan and Vietnam. Last of all to understand China, we must create nodes of excellence in our country.

The same is true of monographs about formations and units of the Polish Armed forces and the battles of the Second World War. Moreover, the sources available can enrich the biographies of British and other allied commanders, politicians and diplomats, something which unfortunately many foreign historians fail to take into account when researching their topic. The papers presents the complexity of undertaking research taking as an example the biography of General Władysław Anders (1890–1970). The sheer volume of primary sources available at the Institute make this a monumental task necessitating strict inner discipline not to be overwhelmed by it. This may in part explain why to date there is no single volume biography of the General encompassing his entire life and the many faceted aspects of his activities.

Abstract:
The purpose of the article is to study the period of the regular army formation during the reign of the Russian sovereign Peter the Great. It is noted that the specific circumstances of general G.Р. Chernyshev’s participation in the wars of Peter the Great’s era are very imperfectly covered in sources and scientific works, the last of which belongs to the 19-th century. Due to the systematization and analytical processing of the available information, the author supplements the episodes of the combat biography of one of the most capable representatives of the command staff of the Russian armed forces, who won victory to the country in the Great Northern War of 1700–1721.

Abstract:
Background: Prevention of water-borne diseases is important for health and training of Armed Forces (AF) personnel. Although, supply of safe water is being ensured to them in military stations, but their training and frequent travels expose them to situations where water may be contaminated. To ensure prevention of water borne diseases, AF personnel are issued ‘Out-Fit Water Sterilising kit’- a kit containing halogen and chlorine-removing tablets. The present study aims to identify the knowledge-use gap in utilization of this kit by AF personnel. Methods: A cross sectional study among 649 randomly selected AF personnel was carried out in a large military station to identify the knowledge and practices of AF personnel regarding ‘OFWS kit’. The data was collected on structured questionnaire through face-to-face interview, and analyse using SPSS ver 20. Results: The study revealed progressive downward graph from knowledge regarding ‘OFWS kit’ (75.3%) to its availability (54.8%) and its ever-use (47.9%). Relevant service factors associated with use are presented. Conclusions: The study highlights the need to ensure regular training of AF personnel in use of ‘OFWS kit’, its availability at the grass-root level and supervision of its use to ensure positive health of Indian soldier always- a prerequisite for his optimal training.

Abstract:
This paper, through the narratives of activists and Meira Paibis reiterates the slogan—repeal the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), which is draconian and anti-people in spirit. The atroci-ty, which has been meted out on the people of Manipur because of this Act, is a profound violation of human rights. Rape, mindless killings, kidnapping, fake encounters have been normalised by virtue of this Act. The youths have been badly affected due to the conflict emerging out of this Act which treats people in Manipur as ‘objects’ against the imagined boundaries of the Indian nation-state for security from the neighbouring nations. In this process, the lived experiences of the people have been pushed to the periphery against the massive motive of the state to protect bor-ders and the imagined nation, which is a direct offshoot of the legacy of colonialism in India. The paper has tried to capture the history of Manipur on a capsule to concretise the struggle of Irom Sharmila and the ‘hopes’ she gives to the people of Manipur for ‘peace’ and ‘justice’. Alongside, it makes a humble attempt to describe the ‘life’ of Irom Sharmila. In addition, it describes the rage of Manipuris, which have given rise to insurgency asking for ‘freedom’ through various platforms.
