This dissertation applies ethnographic research to answer a question in the field of religious studies: to what degree does the prevailing world religions paradigm illuminate the interpretation of religious material that cannot easily be fit into a single major religious tradition. Indian Catholicism generally and Tamil Catholicism in particular have been deeply neglected both by scholars of India (who generally assume that Christianity in India is a "foreign" religion more-or-less indistinguishable from the Christianity of European missionaries) and by theologians and historians of Christiani

Abstract:
The Indian Shaker Church is an indigenous spiritual tradition that incorporates Christian-in-origin elements into its practice that began in 1882 near Shelton, Washington. The existing academic literature on the church emphasizes how features of colonial contact between Euro-American resettlers and Indigenous peoples in the late-nineteenth-century, such as epidemic diseases, demographic changes and intense missionization, created a crisis of faith in Indigenous peoples’ spiritual beliefs. In these explanations, the emergence of the Indian Shaker Church is conceived of as a moment where Indig

This study has three primary, interrelated themes. First, this thesis will show that creating native Christian leadership was a fundamental goal of the Presbyterians who ran the Tucson Indian Training School (1888-1960). Second it will be shown that this pursuit by the Presbyterians, when combined with the motivations and goals of the students and their families, often times expressed itself in Escuela students who were adept at cooperation and cultural brokering. Finally this thesis will address the fundamental difference between federal Indian schools and mission schools to show that a goal

The Canadian residential school system, which operated from the 1880s until the 1970s, was a church-state enterprise designed to assimilate Aboriginal children into Euro-Canadian culture and was characterized by poor sanitation and widespread abuse. However, for most of its long history, the many failings of the residential school system went unacknowledged by the organizations formerly involved in its operation.
