Using English-language and Tamil cookery shows on Indian television as examples, this article examines the complex cultural terrain traversed by contemporary Indian lifestyle TV, and argues that the gastro-politics inherent in such programming is indicative of the ways in which such shows appeal to and develop diverse social imaginaries in a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, multicultural society such as India. The article argues that these shows both enact the creative tensions intrinsic to contemporary neo-liberal forms of cultural nationalism and demonstrate the constitutive co-presence of the g

Abstract:
This chapter scrutinises the growing influence of corporate power on public policy in India. The opening essay discusses a startling case of attempted invasion of child nutrition programmes by commercial interests: in 2008, the biscuit industry used devious means to lobby for the replacement of cooked midday meals in Indian schools with biscuit packets. The attempt failed, but similar efforts continue to this day. Corporate interests also loom large on the annual Union Budget, as discussed in the second essay. The rest of this chapter is largely concerned with Aadhaar, India's attempt to give everyone a unique identity number linked with his or her biometrics. The official purpose of Aadhaar is to reduce corruption in social programmes, but a more plausible reading is that social programmes have been used to fast‐track Aadhaar enrolment. Whatever its initial or intended purpose, the Aadhaar project is increasingly driven by the personal data business.

Abstract:
Indian films are gradually coming of age: becoming more realistic, bold, and daring. Indian short films are getting candid: talking openly about issues rather than brushing them under the carpet. The digital media boom and the advent of social media have made the short film genre popular. In the fast-paced age where people, caught up in the humdrum and rat race of everyday life, are generally becoming impatient about everything, the short film has come to the rescue of filmmakers and film lovers. Gone are the days where everyone had ample time and patience to watch a three hour feature film or a two hour saga. In case of a short film, the message gets conveyed in a quick, crisp, and focused manner, without beating about the bush. Women-oriented short films like Her First Time, Juice, The Day After Every Day, Mama's Boy, Going Dutch, Pressure Cooker, The Girl Story, Ek Dopahar, Khaney Mein Kya Hai, White Shirt, Naked, etc. are breaking stereotypes of the patriarchal notions about women. The chapter probes the portrayals of women characters in Indian short films.

This chapter documents the supply chain management practices at The Akshaya Patra Foundation (TAPF), a not-for-profit organization, which began operations in June 2000 by feeding 1500 children in 5 schools in Bangalore (Massachusetts Medical Society, n.d.). On November 28, 2001 the Supreme Court of India passed an order which mandated that: “A cooked mid-day meal is to be provided in all the government and government-aided primary schools in all the states.” Akshaya Patra was called in to give testimonies to the Supreme Court in order to implement the mandate. With the partnership of the Government of India and various State Governments as well as the generosity of thousands of supporters, it has grown from a small endeavor to a mammoth force that stretches across the country. Now Akshaya Patra is the world’s largest Non-Governmental Organization, providing a free midday meal to 1.2 million underprivileged children in India (Akshaya Patra India, n.d.). It houses one of the finest technologies, and its kitchen operations are exemplary. The case specifically discusses its operations in Bhilai (Chhattisgarh State), India’s Steel City, where it provides free meals to around 31,768 children in about 156 schools around Bhilai.

Abstract:
The coalescence of organoleptic traits viz., pleasant aroma, cooked rice texture, and taste make aromatic rice unique and distinguished from non-aromatic rice. Aromatic rice is cultivated in every rice growing country; with each country has its own indigenous collection. International trade of rice is dominated by Indica (long grained), Japonica (short grained), aromatic rice (Basmati and Jasmine) and glutinous rice; amidst which, Basmati types from India and Pakistan; and Jasmine types from Thailand have phenomenal demand. In India all types of aromatic rice are cultivated based on Kernel length; short, medium, long and very long grained. Basmati varieties own the major market, while other types of aromatic rice besides Basmati are popular in local market only. The country inherits rich diversity of aromatic rice germplasm; with more than 300 different types, each of the rice growing states of India has its own locally popular aromatic rice varieties. India a country where two third of its population consume rice as part of their daily food; aromatic rice always remain their favorite. Basmati, by virtue of its excellent qualities it dominates both national and international market. Every year, Basmati ranks first in respect of foreign exchange earned from the export of agricultural products from India (APEDA). The phenomenal demand and export figures have augmented Basmati Breeding program. However, only few aromatic varieties are cultivated depending on their demand, and their breeding program is also limited. In India, Basmati has over-shadowed other types of aromatic rice in market and in plant breeding programs too. Breeding for Basmati varieties is undertaken by prime agricultural institutions of India. The country regulates quality standards and development of Basmati varieties with the help of Export of Basmati Rice (Quality Control and Inspection) Rules 2003; Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA); and Basmati Export Development Foundation (BEDF). However, no such initiatives have been taken to promote the development of other aromatic rice varieties of India besides Basmati.

Abstract:
Abstract In Kansas in the mid-1850s, competing squatter bands became on-the-ground proxies for antagonistic forces in the national showdown over slavery. Stephen A. Douglas and his allies seeded the field of battle with the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854, which repealed the Missouri Compromise and opened the territories to white settlers under the principle of popular sovereignty before Indian titles had been cleared or lands surveyed. Squatters filled the resulting vacuum. Doing what they had always done, they organized squatter associations to secure their members’ claims, lending a degree of order to the otherwise chaotic process of settling a new country. But in Bleeding Kansas, national slavery agitation created a pressure-cooker environment that made the politics on the ground uniquely volatile. It was not long before the claim clubs became instruments for waging battles over slavery, contributing to the upheavals that shook the territory and the nation.

Abstract:
The adoption of a neoliberal growth regime by the central government in the early 1990s paved the way for provincial governments to fashion neoliberal agendas in the light of their own circumstances. This chapter focuses on specific features of the political economy of growth and development in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India’s largest state. It examines how these policies impacted the spread of economic opportunity in the post-liberalization period in terms of incomes, private consumption, and jobs. The chapter finds that neoliberal policies, in the background of the state’s political economy, implied slow growth, increasing the gap with the national economy, and growing spatial concentration of industrial growth. The state economy has been unable to produce sufficient jobs, accelerating outmigration across the spectrum of workers. The gap between consumption levels in the state and the national level have grown, and inequality between rural and urban consumption, and within urban areas has increased significantly. Upper castes remain highly over-represented among the consumption rich, the landed classes, and among those with better jobs. On the other hand, while Scheduled Castes and Muslims now carry higher weight among the consumption poor, there is also some evidence of an intra-group increase in consumption inequality, which cautions against treating social categories as homogenous. Very limited improvements at the bottom combined with rising inequalities in jobs, incomes, and patterns of consumption across, and even within, social classes are creating an aspirational pressure cooker, which cannot be ignored.
