Abstract:
Generations of historians have looked to Bengal, Bombay, and Madras to detect the emergence of the legal and administrative mechanisms that would underpin Britain’s nineteenth-century empire. Yet this focus on ‘British’ India overshadows the very different history of nearly half the Indian subcontinent, which was still ruled by nominally independent monarchs. This dissertation traces the increasingly asymmetrical relationships between the East India Company and neighbouring Indian kingdoms during a period of intensive British imperial expansion, from 1798 to 1818. This thesis examines the political and social worldview of British and Indian royalty during the nineteenth century. Rather than viewing them as mere 'ornamental' figureheads, it seeks to highlight and scrutinise the ideas held by monarchs (sovereign or deposed) about empire and the role of royalty, as well as considering how their attempts at implementing such ideas can complicate existing narratives about the relative influence and authority of this group. In this thesis, the concept of the procedural aspect of the Rule of Law will be distinguished from what I argue are conceptions that are falsely promulgated as concept. The different aspects of the Rule of Law—form, substance, and procedure— are helpful in making the distinction between concept and conception. Examining procedure within the Rule of Law is particularly important, and I define a broader set of requirements of the concept of the procedural aspect of the Rule of Law. Abstract:
American cemeteries have evolved from unsophisticated and crowded burial grounds to curvilinear and elegantly designed rural cemeteries to the functional business of the memorial park. Regardless of the type, all cemeteries are constantly changing due to their natural features and because of the deterioration of stone after prolonged exposure to the elements. Then add neglect or vandalism into the mix and cemeteries appear to be particularly doomed. This creative project examines the cemeteries in Delaware County, Indiana. Abstract:
The father and son architectural firm of T.J. Tolan & Son and later Brentwood S. Tolan designed seven county courthouses in Indiana, more than any other architectural firm but one. The Tolan firm also designed courthouses throughout the Midwest. Little is known about these architects, except that neither was formally trained. However, the Tolans designed high caliber courthouses that are viewed as some of the best in the state. Using primary and secondary sources, this thesis is an assessment of the courthouses constructed in Indiana by the architectural firm T.J. Tolan & Son and by Brentwood

Abstract:
Biological monitoring and land use data analysis were performed for a small (79,800 acre) watershed in west-central Indiana. A model was developed between Hilsenhoff biotic index and percentage of water (volume) draining through forestland at each sample site (R2.92, P < .002). This water volume model was found to explain more of the variation in biological integrity than USEPA and Ohio EPA habitat assessment methods, as well as, a land use model based upon percentage watershed surface area. Based on this water volume model, maps were created depicting regions within the watershed that had the

Abstract:
Rockshelters are unique cultural resources whose diversity has been studied worldwide. In Indiana, this diversity has been overlooked and rockshelters have been classified as temporary habitation sites (Sieber et al. 1989). This characterization obscures a true understanding of what rockshelters were used for and has recently been shown as an inadequate means of interpretation of rockshelter utilization (Martin 2000, Water 2002). Through an examination of the depositional environments, preservation, artifacts, and various components found within rockshelters, this thesis will show the diversit

A study was undertaken to better understand the hydrogeologic framework of the Delaware County, Indiana. Arc View GIS 3-D and Spatial Analysts along with VISUAL MODFLOW are used to study the flow patterns by developing a 3-D model of major aquifers in the county, both glacial and bedrock. The GIS platform facilitates the time consuming task of preparing data input and output. In addition, major recharge zones are also identified in GIS using soil and slope data. The bedrock of Delaware County is composed of Silurian bedrock, which is overlain by glacial drift. Abstract:
Ginn Woods, a 161 acre tract of woodlands located in northern Delaware County, contains one of the largest remaining sections of old growth forest in East Central Indiana. Located approximately 15 miles north of Muncie, it has been regularly used by Ball State students and faculty for education and research for over 60 years. Despite this frequent use, little formal botanical exploration has been published. This study presents a comprehensive inventory of the vascular flora found in the woods and documents the composition and sizeclass distribution of the canopy tree species. The 370 species r
