Abstract:
Chapter 5 considers Bose’s concept of the “Oedipus mother” via a discussion of Aravāṉ-Kūttāṇṭavar’s self-mutilating sacrifice as a battle-opening offering to “mother” Kālī. This sacrifice is presented in three different contexts: one from the Draupadī cult, and two from the Kūttāṇṭavar cult. The Kūttāṇṭavar story was developed entirely in Tamil country, but there are comparable narratives about different Mahābhārata heroes from all over India.
