Abstract:
In 2005, a tornado killed 25 people in a Mobile Home Park in Evansville, Indiana. Spurred on by this disaster, the state of Indiana passed a law in 2007 requiring that all new manufactured homes come with a NOAA (National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration) Weather Radio. Members of the Indiana Congressional delegation introduced similar legislation in the US House of Representatives (House Bill H.R. 2787), which passed on October 30, 2007. The bill has since moved to the Senate Committee on Banking Housing and Urban Affairs. Since 2000, over 50 percent of deaths from tornadoes have occurred in mobile homes. NOAA weather radio is now accessible by 98 percent of the population, but user ship remains low. More emphasis should be made to notify the citizenry of this vital resource.

Abstract:
Moving from a traditional school district to one that embraces a community schools model requires fundamental shifts in organizational structure and practices. Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation in southern Indiana and Vancouver Public Schools in Vancouver, Wash., are two districts that have navigated this change. Leaders from those districts describe their efforts to learn from data, build community support and staff buy in, leverage assets, build infrastructure, develop policies and procedures, and plan for sustaining their initiative.

Abstract:
This paper advocates a more scientific approach to residential real estate valuation as opposed to more traditional approaches, which are flawed for two main reasons: (1) appraiser judgements are almost exclusively used and (2) appraisers’ sample sizes are too small to provide adequate estimated values. By using a regression model, this paper explores the impacts of different characteristics on market value. Three hundred and fifteen properties in Evansville, Indiana, were analyzed testing twelve different variables. This model suggests that 91.8% of the total market value variation is explained by four independent variables. These findings provide evidence that multiple linear regression could be used to better predict a property’s value.

Abstract:
Abstract On 16 June 1992, an mLg 2.3 earthquake occurred in southwestern Indiana, near Evansville. This area is part of the Illinois Basin coal belt, an area of active surface mines with numerous strip-mine blasts daily. The co-location of earthquakes and strip-mine blasts enable spectral comparisons without significant concern for differences due to path propagation effects. Discriminating between the two types of events can be done visually due to the distinctive appearance of the Rg phase in strip-mine blasts and high frequency coda of earthquakes. A strong Rg phase is indicative of shallow source depths. However, earthquakes previously located at shallow depths elsewhere within the Illinois Basin do not exhibit a distinctive Rg phase, indicating either poor control in focal depth determination or a fundamental difference in source mechanism. Visual and spectral examination shows that earthquakes are richer in energy at higher frequencies than strip-mine blasts. Earthquakes have significant energy at 20–30 Hz, while the significant energy content of blasts is closer to 10 Hz. The significant difference compared to previous earthquake-nuclear explosion discriminant studies is that the chemical explosion has reduced high frequency content compared to the earthquake.

On Dec. 13, 1977, the University of Evansville men's basketball team, its coaches and other university employees were killed in a plane crash at Dress Regional Airport on the city's north side. Months later, a brash outsider named Dick Walters began rebuilding the basketball program. Four years later, he led the Purple Aces to the school's first Division 1 NCAA tournament. This thesis explores the relationship between the town and the team in the years after the crash.

Abstract:
Congested roadways and declining air quality standards are major concerns for many communities faced with the challenges of suburban growth and city decay. How each community chooses to fight the problems created by urban sprawl depends greatly on individualized characteristics of the community. Analyzing and understanding unique values of each community provides a sound foundation for measures designed to promote sustainable growth initiatives. The Evansville, Indiana, region is experiencing many of the growing pains associated with increased residential, commercial, and industrial development. Many roadways are currently strained near capacity, and traffic problems are anticipated to increase over the next 20 years. Evansville was ranked 68 out of the 271 worst sprawling MPOs, and Vanderburgh County will be designated as "non-attainment" with the next EPA air quality ruling. This research demonstrates that the Evansville region has problems with urban sprawl, air quality, and roadway congestion. Local air quality data, roadway congestion, employer and employee surveys, and commute patterns are all analyzed to determine the existing characteristics of the community. As a means to mitigate current and future concerns, Travel Demand Management (TDM) strategies such as park and ride facilities should be utilized. Implementing shared used park and ride facilities will provide an effective and relatively inexpensive method of congestion reduction by providing motorists with a different commute option.

Abstract:
Emma Bell Miles was born in Evansville, Indiana. Her parents were teachers, and in 1890, to improve Emma’s faltering health, the family moved from the Cincinnati area to Walden’s Ridge (now Signal Mountain) near Chattanooga, Tennessee. There, Miles grew up with her feet in two worlds—the rural mountain culture of Walden’s Ridge and the world of art and books represented by her parents and the wealthy Chattanoogans vacationing nearby....
