Diesel plays a very important role in rapid depletion of conventional energy sources along with increasing demand and also major contributors of air pollutants. Diesel is used in the present days for engines and the invention of an alternative or a blend to the conventional diesel seems very essential to the energy crisis. Major portion of today's energy demand in India is with fossil fuels. Hence it is high time that alternate fuels for engines should be derived from indigenous sources. As India is an agricultural country, there is a wide scope for the production of corn oil from the germ of corn (maize). In this experiment, an attempt has been made to investigate four types of fuels are considered 100% Diesel, 90% Diesel+10% Corn oil Methyl Ester, 80% Diesel+20% Corn oil Methyl Ester, 70% Diesel+30% Corn oil Methyl Ester and 60% Diesel+40% Corn oil Methyl Ester. The various performance parameters like, brake thermal efficiency, Mechanical efficiency and brake specific fuel consumption were measured and analyzed. In the experiment it found the biodiesel blends gives comparable performance to diesel.

O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar a percepção dos moradores do Distrito Administrativo de Belém (DABEL) em relação à arborização viária com Mangifera indica. A metodologia consistiu na aplicação de entrevistas aos moradores do DABEL a fim de avaliar o grau de satisfação quanto à arborização com Mangifera indica e o nível de envolvimento na manutenção dessa espécie pelos mesmos. Foram entrevistadas 304 pessoas no DABEL, sendo que 54% são do gênero feminino; 51% possui nível superior; 87% dos entrevistados preferem a Mangifera indica na arborização viária; 42% salientaram todos os principais benefícios proporcionados pela Mangifera indica; 70% dos entrevistados perceberam danos relacionados à injúria no caule e danos às raízes; 22% colaboram com a manutenção das m; 53% das pessoas sugeriram a prática de poda nas árvores. Quanto ao reconhecimento como "Cidade das mangueiras", 74% dos entrevistados acreditam que esse título é válido. Recomenda-se desenvolver uma maior sensibilização da população buscando o comprometimento da mesma, visando uma melhor qualidade de vida e a preservação da Mangifera indica.

RÉSUMÉLe système de classification des malades Resource Utilization Groups III (RUG-III) est un indice de composition de la clientèle élaboré aux États-unis pour classer les pensionnaires des maisons de soins infirmiers et le financement des services de soins en établissement. À Hong Kong, RUG III est basé sur plusieurs groupes de pensionnaires. Le but de la présente étude était d'examiner la fiabilité et la validité de RUG III dans les maisons de soins infirmiers de Hong Kong. Une enquête transversale a été effectuée dans sept établissements de soins de longue durée exploités par une seule agence. Les pensionnaires (n=1 127) ont été évalués selon un ensemble minimal de données et aussi de soins, et le temps passé par le personnel auxiliaire à la dispense des soins a été consigné durant deux semaines avant ou après la fin de l'évaluation de l'ensemble minimal des données. Un évaluateur indépendant a rencontré de nouveau 45 des 1 127 résidents afin d'évaluer le coefficient d'objectivité. Le coefficient d'objectivité de l'évaluation de l'ensemble minimal des données était excellent (Kappa=0,76) et le RUG III initial a compté pour quelque 30 pour cent du temps du personnel infirmier. Les résultats apportent une preuve préliminaire permettant d'étayer que RUG III est un indice fiable et valide de la composition de la clientèle des maisons de soins infirmiers de Hong Kong, mais il faudra effectuer d'autres études afin de réduire la variance de l'utilisation des ressources expliquée par cet indice de composition de la clientèle.

Introducción: Numerosos estudios han documentado la incidencia de los riesgos psicosociales, y particularmente, del desgaste psíquico en la salud de los trabajadores. No obstante, las mujeres en condición de vulnerabilidad social no han sido objeto de exploración. Objetivo: Caracterizar el desgaste psíquico de una muestra de mujeres vulnerables. Materiales y métodos: Estudio exploratorio, descriptivo, correlacional. Se aplicó la dimensión número 4 de la Batería para el estudio de las condiciones de trabajo de carácter psicosocial (CTCPS-MAC), que evalúa desgaste psíquico y 3 factores particulares (respuesta cognitiva-emocional; respuesta conductual y respuesta fisiológica), a 99 mujeres vulnerables de Zapotlán el Grande. Resultados: Un 75,8 % de las participantes presentaron condiciones óptimas con calificaciones entre bueno y muy bueno, el 24,2% entre normal y nocivo, lo cual indica que requieren ayuda inmediata. El factor más afectado fue el número 1, respuesta cognitivo-emocional, el 52,5% presentó sintomatología negativa. No se encontraron asociaciones significativas entre las variables sociodemográficas estudiadas y el desgaste psíquico. Conclusiones: Los resultados permiten abrir puertas para investigaciones más profundas con la población estudiada con el fin de garantizar salud mental, y calidad de vida en las mujeres en estado de vulnerabilidad social de Zapotlán el Grande.

Introducción: La Sociedad Americana de Cáncer indica que al año se diagnostican 163.300 casos de cáncer infantil en el mundo. En Colombia fueron reportadas 300 muertes por esta causa en menores de edad durante el año 2015. Actualmente, las principales asociaciones etiológicas de cáncer infantil son la radiación ionizante y exposición a pesticidas, convirtiéndose en una prioridad emergente en la agenda mundial de salud infantil. Objetivo: Identificar factores carcinogénicos asociados al incremento de riesgo en la aparición de cáncer infantil. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó una revisión de artículos científicos en inglés y español en la base de datos PubMed, ScienceDirect, SciELO, y publicaciones estadísticas de la Organización Mundial de la Salud, Asociación Americana de Cáncer y el Instituto Nacional de Cancerología de Colombia. Resultados: Se describieron diferentes factores carcinogénicos como radiación ionizante, agentes biológicos, patrones dietéticos, exposición a pesticidas, tabaco y asbesto, destacando su asociación en el desarrollo de cáncer infantil. Conclusión: El reconocimiento de los agentes carcinogénicos frecuentemente asociados con cáncer infantil, permite identificar el impacto de estos sobre la salud, y generar medidas preventivas más eficaces que puedan reducir la carga global de la enfermedad.

Introducción: Frente al creciente problema de obesidad infantil, en Colombia se han realizado avances en el marco legislativo, como la ley 1355 de 2009, la cual indica que las instituciones educativas deben ofertar frutas y verduras a los escolares. Objetivo: Describir la aplicación de la ley 1355 de 2009 frente a la oferta de frutas y verduras en instituciones educativas del municipio de Soledad-Atlántico. Materiales y métodos: Estudio descriptivo, transversal. Se encuestaron 18 directivos docentes: 12 coordinadores y 6 directores, mediante un formulario estructurado, y se hizo observación directa de la disponibilidad de frutas y verduras en las tiendas escolares, contrastando ambos aspectos. Resultados: 8/18 encuestados manifestó conocer la ley 1355; 11/18 indicaron que en su escuela existe un encargado de liderar programas relacionados con alimentación saludable; en 50% de las Instituciones se han adelantado programas de alimentación saludable; 15/18 (83,3%) respondieron que sí hay disponibilidad de frutas y verduras en las tiendas escolares, pero esto se evidenció solamente en una de las 18 Instituciones (5,6%). Conclusión: Se debe mejorar la disponibilidad de frutas y verduras en las tiendas escolares y lograr un empoderamiento de directivos, docentes, padres de familia y estudiantes, en aras de disminuir las cifras de obesidad.

Introducción: La prevalencia modificada de caries en la primera infancia es de 61,92%, el desconocimiento en salud bucal por parte de cuidadores es una de las causas reportadas. Objetivo: Determinar conocimientos y prácticas de las agentes educativas y condiciones de salud bucal de niños de los hogares comunitarios y Centros de Desarrollo Infantil del Instituto Colombiano de Bienestar Familiar de Santa Rosa de Cabal 2016. Materiales y métodos: Estudio cuantitativo, descriptivo y transversal. Se aplicó encuestas de caracterización a 198 niños y 20 agentes educativas, de Conocimientos Actitudes y Prácticas e índices odontológicos. Se aplicó estadística univariada y Chi2 Resultados: El 90% de las agentes reconocen la caries como la enfermedad más frecuente, 50% realizan cepillado de los infantes sin utilizar seda dental. Se evidenció prevalencia modificada de caries en 63,6% y promedio de índice O’Leary 61,3%. Existe asociación entre el índice ceo-d, área de residencia y estrato socioeconómico con valor p<0,05. Conclusiones: Agentes evidencian vacíos conceptuales que requieren abordaje de educación por parte de odontólogos. El estado de salud bucal de la primera infancia indica un porcentaje por encima de la prevalencia modificada de caries a nivel nacional y el índice O’Leary riesgo de enfermedades bucodentales.

One promising traditional industry slated for revival in late colonial India was carpet weaving. Characterized by low technology, high product value, and strong demand, carpets appealed for obvious economic reasons, while simultaneously evoking India's luxurious artisanal past. In western India, carpet weaving was centered in jails where convicts produced high-quality rugs using historic designs in prison factories that served as laboratories for redefining penal labor and traditional design under the eyes of the colonial state. For, even as they were poised at the center of new exchange networks of design ideas, jail factories also claimed practical economic goals: to earn money for jails, train convicts in new skills and habits, and build India's productive potential in a time of economic malaise. As such, they provide an ideal site for examining the economic context for the emerging design industry, and for limitations of colonial visions of the Indian economy.

Abstract Simplified sewerage provides an improved alternative to single user on-site options in peri-urban areas in India, and contributes to the aim of reducing the need for human handling of waste (manual scavenging), and the Government's goal of making India open defecation free by 2019. This research develops a mixed methodologies approach to design, optimise and assess failure risk for a proposed installation in a village in India. A steady state simplified sewerage model was used to do the initial design which was further modelled in DRAINET, a numerical model traditionally used for building drainage systems. The input data for DRAINET were obtained from a detailed survey carried out on site, which included usage pattern and focus group data. A total of 106 properties were included in the design and the survey. Test runs were carried out for the whole site over a 12-hour period. All main pipe runs were 100 mm diameter and set to a gradient of 1:100. A risk model was developed and applied to the DRAINET results which confirmed that the design operated effectively; however, there were areas of concern at the extremities of the site, which required additional flow boosting devices or gradient changed.

AbstractSince 6 BC, when the first university of the world was established in Takshila in India, higher education in India has been integrating advanced knowledge and skills with larger social concerns. Apart from teaching and research, a prime concern of universities is to engage with the community and to contribute towards the development of society. Much emphasis is placed on the values of education by complementing curricular instruction for shaping future generations and enabling active engagement with society. The emphasis has been on holistic development of the student leading to complete realization and liberalization of oneself. To quote Swami Vivekananda, a well-known Indian scholar, “Education is not the amount of information that we put into your brain and runs riot there, undigested, all your life. We must have life-building, man-making, character-making assimilation of ideas. If you have assimilated five ideas and made them your life and character, you have more education than any man who has got by heart a whole library. If education is identical with information, the libraries are the greatest sages of the world and encyclopaedia are the greatest Rishis”.

This chapter assesses whether and how India is developing into a rising power in the Persian Gulf. Dionysis Markakis approaches India’s reconnection with the region in terms of ‘middle power theory’ and disaggregates the dominant economic, sociocultural, and military drivers of Indian policies in the Persian Gulf. Markakis suggests that India is still attempting to carve out its niche in the international system and that multiple factors lie behind its reticence to engage proactively in regional and world affairs. These include the strong element of multilateral alignment that runs through Indian foreign policy as well as domestic institutional weaknesses within the structure of Indian government itself. For Markakis, a primary challenge for Indian policymakers is how to outline a more proactive, rather than reactive, approach to foreign policy and the conception and exercise of power.

Value chain practices focus on market orientation of products and services. Products and services highly rely on processes included in the supply chain in order to contribute to the value chain. Globalization, competition, and high cost of production influence the value chain imperatives. Thus, organizations involved in the value chain are challenged with creation of innovative designs and establishing lean production scenarios. This challenge is more serious in the cases of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). The rugs industry in India is one example of such market behavior, and various SMEs are involved in this sector. Besides, the sector demands market orientation and customer retention for which continuous innovative practices are essential. Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) have played a crucial role in supporting these SMEs in India in rolling out innovative designs through customer engagements in the entire production life cycle. There are also efforts to use ICT as a tool to innovate processes, products, and services to harness better returns on investment and to sustain business. In this case, Jaipur Rugs Company (JRC) strives to manage innovation cycles to ensure development oriented value chain for the weavers and ICT applications have been intrinsic to realize these efforts.

The Indian practice of the caste system creates a repressive stratification in the subcontinent. Hinduism refers to a variety of theologies, mythologies, cultic practices and philosophies spread across India. The exclusion of outcastes is ordained, pursued and perpetuated by dominant religio-political and socio-cultural forces, often with violent consequences. While the constitution prohibits any discrimination on grounds of caste, the social practice of caste identity continues to be relevant across the country. Because the caste system is the product of a religious worldview, it is through religious rituals that caste discrimination and prejudices are manifested. Mission organisations agreed to work within specific caste communities in order to avoid conflict. The caste-based segregation masquerading as denominationalism runs so deep within the churches in India that there are congregations who do not share the Eucharist. Only 12 out of 241 bishops are from a Dalit background, whereas Dalits make up more than 65% of the membership of Catholic congregations. Dalit groups have had to mobilise to counter the unfair advantages enjoyed by higher-caste groups. The caste system has become a potent political tool within Indian society and its relevance in shaping socio-cultural moorings have not diminished.

E-health web portal provides a new medium for information dissemination, interaction and collaboration among institutions, health professionals, health providers and the public. This case study provides a founders perspective in setting up and running a medical website that offers online health care services to customers across the world. The case study discusses the challenges and issues faced by the founders and also the promoter's perspective on the lucrativeness of offering e-tailing services. Using this case study an attempt is made to stress the importance of a flexible e-tailing business model specific to the services offered and need of periodic assessments to ensure that the business runs profitable.

Discrimination has been a central category in understanding inequality and exclusion in most societies. But exclusions vary in their scope and also in the specific socio-political ideologies underlying them. India has been on the whole more aware of discrimination than other countries but this awareness is for the most part restricted to caste based discrimination. It does not extend to recognition of discrimination against other groups, especially religious minorities even though there are significant differences in key outcomes between various social groups differentiated by religion and caste. It is important to recognize that religious identity remains an important axis of discrimination in India and today even more than before. Resentment and prejudice against minorities, particularly Muslims is common in India, as indeed in many developed and developing countries, but we have simply not acknowledged the sheer existence and scale of prejudice and discrimination. Hence, there has been little public debate or empirical analysis to establish the presence of discrimination against Muslims and/or identify its sources. Here’s the crucial point. The exclusion and discrimination of Muslims is not episodic: it is both everyday and institutional. It runs across all sectors and runs so deep that it appears normal to most people who perhaps don’t notice it or are unaware of it. This paper seeks to analyses social discrimination against Muslims and its manifestations. It has two main objectives. The first objective is to examine the concept and relevance of institutional discrimination with regard to the experience of Muslims in India, and to argue that the fight against institutional discrimination involves not only ideological/pedagogical struggle but also practical policy and legal measures to eradicate it. The second objective is to understand to what extent the ideology of majoritarianism has an influence on public institutions by delving deeper into the institutional bias of public policies and institutions. This is examined through two issues: the claims for Scheduled Caste status by Dalit Muslims and the recent decision of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to investigate complaints of Hindu exodus from a town in the north Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. At the theoretical level, the paper examines the viability and implications of excluding religious minorities from the discourse of development and policy making in the context of the buildup of a new axis of majoritarian politics and the wider social and political context in which religion and religious communities have come to dominate public discourse in India, and yet governments disallow any policy that could ameliorate the socio-economic neglect of religious minorities.

This essay traces the genesis of the Supreme Court of Canada under the Supreme Court Act of 1875, and the appointment procedure as described in it. The essay argues that the widening of the pool, where consultation for judicial appointments is made, has resulted in the appointment of persons with diverse credentials. The author describes how a reformed procedure for appointments involves the Prime Minister and the Minister of Justice consulting various Chief Justices, law school deans, and provincial justice ministers to solicit names of potential appointees. The Canadian experience demonstrates variations in appointment mechanisms for broad-based consultation even in the absence of a commission model. The author, however, rues that most innovations in the appointments process have been short-lived, with a general shift to a more secretive process for appointments.

Courts, Public Cultures of Legality, and Urban Ecological Imagination in Delhi Chapter abstract: This essay provides an analysis of the legal contests over the forests and groundwater in the city of Delhi over the last three decades. It examines the ways in which the iconic Delhi Ridge, which runs along a north to south axis through most of the city, is imagined and litigated as a natural resource, an environmental amenity, and a provider of ecosystem services for the national capital region of India. Based on research in courts and among litigators, with activists and technocrats, this study describes the formation of legal public spheres around environmental disputes and the rights of urban residents of all classes in Delhi. The complexity of the causes of mutinies are captured in this chapter that focuses upon the role of ethnicity. Starting with the British West India Regiment in 1801, we examine the importance of the slave trade in supporting the recruitment to the British Army in the West Indies and consider how the ‘alternatives’ of slavery or forced recruitment are not regarded as alternatives by many ex-slaves. The chapter then moves on to the largest event to rock the early British Empire, the ‘mutiny’ or ‘1st War of Independence’ in India between 1857 and 1858. The nomenclature is a signal of the meaning of the events for different actors involved, and this ambiguity runs into the Curragh ‘Incident’ that has all the hallmarks of a mutiny, except it is staged by the military establishment not by the military subordinates. And if the British thought 1858 was the last time they would see Indian soldiers or sailors mutinying against them, they were wrong: in Singapore in 1915 and then in the Royal India Navy in 1946, the British Empire is forced to look at itself—but chooses not to. Finally, we consider the way British Foreign Labour Battalions were treated in France, compared to the treatment meted out to domestic units, and then consider the role of racism in the Port Chicago mutiny of 1944 which has echoes of the contemporary situation in the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020.

Deposit insurance is intended for providing security to depositors from the standpoint of averting bank runs. It is crucial for nations to examine their institutional environment, banking structure, and regulatory framework before insuring deposits in the interest of maintaining market discipline. In the case of India, while Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) has been contributing appreciably to the stability of Indian banking system by safeguarding depositors against possible loss of their entitled deposits with insured banks, the system is based on “paybox” mandate and affords limited conditional protection to depositors. Guided by the need for a stronger resolution mechanism, the Indian government introduced the Financial Resolution and Deposit Insurance (FRDI) Bill in August 2017, which had its own share of controversies, conceivably the most confounded provisions being the bail-in clause and omission of explicit declaration of maximum coverage. The economic and political pressures, however, led to the dropping of the Bill in July 2018, thus creating further vacuum in an already underprovided deposit protection.

Introdução: A correta determinação taxonômica é necessária para garantir a qualidade de estudos de diversas áreas do conhecimento. Contudo, ela demanda tempo e logística que muitas vezes dificultam ou até inviabilizam sua realização. Objetivo: Pensando nisso, nosso estudo buscou avaliar a utilização do Street View do software Google Earth Pro como ferramenta para determinação de espécies usadas na arborização de cidades. Material e métodos: O estudo consistiu em duas etapas: (1) contabilização e determinação das espécies utilizadas na arborização de duas ruas de Campo do Brito, SE (rua João Pessoa e rua José Bonifácio), por meio do software; (2) verificação in situ dos resultados obtidos via software. Resultados: Na rua João Pessoa foram contabilizados 42 indivíduos da espécie Ficus benjamina L. e dois de Azadirachta indica A. Juss., por meio do software. Já para a rua José Bonifácio foram 12 indivíduos de F. benjamina. In situ, as determinações foram todas confirmadas. Em relação a contabilização, foi observado um indivíduo a mais de A. indica. Durante a execução do trabalho, notou-se que também é possível avaliar outras questões por meio dessa ferramenta, a exemplo dos aspectos biológicos das árvores (porte, arquitetura da copa, etc), além de aspectos físicos dos locais (largura da calçada, existência de rede elétrica, recuo de imóveis, danos no calçamento provocados pelas plantas, etc). Conclusão: Diante dos resultados obtidos, é possível concluir que o uso do Street View do Google Earth Pro se mostrou uma ferramenta bastante precisa para a determinação e contabilização de plantas utilizadas na arborização urbana das ruas estudadas. Contudo, é necessário realizar esse estudo em locais cuja riqueza de espécies seja maior.

Diagnosis, isolation and corrective action of incipient faults in a developmental Aero Gas Turbine Engine, mandates advanced warning of the emerging faults by apt and timely degradation monitoring in order to mitigate catastrophic failure. This calls for cautious performance monitoring during the test runs by instrumenting the engine under test with multiple sensors to acquire the physical parameters like temperature, pressure, flow and speed which are indicative of the engine degradation. Sensor reliability is critical to engine control and performance monitoring. Sensor data which serves as the primary key for assessing the engine behaviour needs to be validated before its use in determining the degradation. Particularly in a developmental engine under test, the accuracy and reliability of measurements creates the basis for understanding the engine behaviour, in order to evaluate its performance. This paper targets to develop validation tool to ensure that only trusted sensor measurements are used for engine performance computation by weeding out the erroneous data. The pre-processing of data to ensure its accuracy also serves as a “need for maintenance indicator” to warn the operator for sensor breakdowns, wearing or deterioration and detect calibration needs. Development and validation of the LabVIEW based “Sensor Data Validation Tool (SDVT)” using the actual test run data constitutes the main body of this paper along with concluding remarks which brings out the validation results and the required maintenance action.

This paper highlights the design challenges encountered during the project execution phase of HMPL’s Mundra - Bathinda Pipeline (MBPL), a crude import pipeline for feeding Guru Gobind Singh Refinery of HMEL at Bathinda in Punjab State. For the first time in India, a cross-country pipeline was planned through a terrain wherein section of more than 270 km length runs through the eastern fringe of Thar desert in the state of Rajasthan. MBPL routed in newer and exotic expanse of Great Indian Thar desert posed greater challenges in respect of pipeline routing, design and construction. The pipeline route across the bygone desert is characterized by severe climate and remote locations. The summer daytime temperature reaches upto 50 deg C while in winter it drops to near freezing temperature. Sand dunes at some places along the route were more than 40 m high and were of different kinds and separated by inter-dunal sandy plains of varying stretches.

Safety is always the number one focus of the pipeline industry. This paper will discuss how Double Block & Bleed (DB&B) maximizes safety during a pipeline isolation. In addition to safety, DB&B also maximizes project efficiency, which results in minimizing project and maintenance costs. The goal of DB&B for both safety and efficiency is to approach 100 percent success in achieving a seal with no detectable seepage. Pipeline isolations are frequently utilized for maintenance such as replacement of leaking block valves, cut out and repair of third party damage, and cut out and replacement of imperfections identified during inline inspection runs. This paper will begin with a review of laboratory testing and calculation of DB&B efficiency, followed by one or more field case studies.

Centrifugal pumps (CPs) are crucial components in many plant operations. However, they are susceptible to failures due to mechanical faults and/or fluid flow abnormalities. These faults not only affect the CP system but also affect the systems delivering flow to it or receiving flow from it. Therefore, it is extremely crucial to recognize the faults and estimate their severity during operation, so that a corrective action may be initiated. In the present work, an attempt has been made to develop a flexible algorithm based on support vector machine (SVM) suitable to classify CP faults, like the suction and discharge blockages (with varying severities), impeller defects, pitted cover plate faults and dry runs. Also, a combination of mechanical faults (impeller defects and pitted cover plate faults) and suction and discharge blockage faults are considered. For the sake of classification, the CP vibration data and the motor line-current data are generated in time-domain for each fault experimentally. Furthermore, industrially operating CP signatures cannot be immune to noise generated from other operating equipment in the premises. Hence, to assess the robustness of the developed methodology, signals are corrupted by adding 5%, 10% and 25% additive white Gaussian noise. The developed algorithm is tested with corrupted data. The efficiency of fault predictions obtained while testing with noisy and non-noisy data are compared. The results are very promising and carry a high potential for industrial applications.

Gas turbine engines operate under varying conditions. Subsequently, thrust varies under diverse conditions. Owing to combustion the exhaust runs full. The flow jets have been in utilization for engineering systems, present work investigates the merits of jet perforations for gas turbine engine applications. Controlling thrust when device is running is not an option in the present world. This led us to do the study on the flow of jet through various perforated shapes. At present, thorough experiments are carried out for flow analysis of diverse jet perforations and related flow optimization for better performance. Experiments are carried out on a scaled cascade tunnel. The perforations are of circle, square, triangle and ellipse in shape. The physical insight from this work would be very informative and useful for gas turbine engine operations. Systematic experiments are carried out to fundamentally understand flow behavior with different perforations at the exit. Gas turbine engines have revolutionized the propulsion systems. The very idea of generating large amount of thrust from a small volume has always intrigued scientific community about the effectiveness of operations. Though, the engine works, however, effectiveness have always been questioned and worked upon. Results significantly state that jet perforations do modify the flow jet characteristics. The results show the increase in velocity by 6.2% on using the circular perforation. For the circular perforation wall jet, velocity increases by 14.7% with respect to reference jet i.e. jet without perforation.

Last decade has seen a spurt in autonomous technologies in military and civilian sectors. The search for oil and gas is moving into ever deeper waters, and the need for coastal surveillance and climatic monitoring, makes underwater autonomous assistance quite obvious for a developing nation like India with thousands of kilometres of coastline. Using such platforms in these endeavours provides an efficient way to keep human life out of harm’s way in hostile environments. The prototype developed has its navigation based on an internal IMU (Inertial Mass Unit) and the software is extensible to support DVL (Doppler Velocity Logger) based navigation. Near range object detection and path planning is achieved via Image Processing and using two surge and one heave thrusters the bot can operate in three degrees of freedom. The modular structure allows for the addition of extra sensors like pressure, temperature and manipulators like grippers and torpedoes. It has a Intel Atom processor, which runs the control algorithms for motion and required task completion. Paper published with permission.

Abstract Executing interventions in wells encrusted with wax is challenging because experience with global coiled tubing (CT) dewaxing operations is limited, and equipment failure and stuck pipe risks are high. With few jobs performed worldwide, CT dewaxing (hot oil circulation with CT) operations are largely unexplored. The deviated wells in a field in northeast India pose several challenges including completely seized wellbore due to paraffin/asphaltene deposition, previous failed well cleanout attempts, very slow and low bottomhole assembly (BHA) penetration, pumping corrosive and flammable low wax crude (LWC) through CT, high chances of CT getting stuck, and pumping heated 69°C LWC through the CT. This case study delivers insights about design, safety, and operational considerations for 1.5-in. CT dewaxing and nitrogen lift operations in a subhydrostatic well in the field. The objective of this CT dewaxing and nitrogen kickoff operation was to clear the well of paraffin/asphaltene/wax to 1600 m and activate it with nitrogen, and this paper describes solutions for cleaning out and nitrogen-lifting wells with declining production due to paraffin and asphaltene deposition. One well is described in this case study, but this approach can be used perform CT intervention in similar wells. For this case, simulations were sensitized to identify the best combination of pumping rates, CT speeds, and fluid temperature to remove deposits hindering BHA penetration. This study proposes prevention measures using appropriate grounding and procedures, which determine if the crude oil can be pumped through CT. By use of this methodology, 581 dewaxing runs have been performed in 78 wells. Extensive on-job experience and lessons learnt by performing this operation over the last 3 years bring excellent results and prevent misruns. In many cases, production has been restored from nil; several examples feature a fivefold improvement of productivity thanks to this intervention method. Optimized operational parameters such as CT speed, pumping rates, and the use of smaller outer diameter BHAs doubled operational efficiency during those operations. In addition, strict application of the recommendations prevented the occurrence of operational problems such as stuck CT, crude oil flashing, sand bridging, and equipment failure.

When a single source based crude oil feeder ‘difficult-to-pig’ pipeline runs through a highly sensitive marine national park, the Operator is challenged with the dilemma of how to assure the integrity of the pipeline with the limited options that are available. After ten (10) years of service, in 2015, an Indian Operator chose to assess the time dependent threat of internal corrosion on their difficult-to-pig offshore (SPM) to onshore (Tank Farm) crude oil pipeline by utilizing the NACE SP0208-2008 Standard for Liquid-Petroleum Internal Corrosion Direct Assessment (ICDA). This methodology was already recommended by ASME B31.8S as one (1) of the three (3) options for assessing integrity of a pipeline. Only a year earlier, in 2014 – the Indian regulators, Oil Industry Safety Directorate (OISD) had also brought the technique of ICDA within its regulatory framework for Operators as a credible option to assess integrity of pipelines that are difficult to pig and/or un-piggable. This paper discusses on the findings of the ICDA program that forced the Operator to accelerate their integrity program for the subject pipeline and perform specialised In-line Inspection (ILI) in 2018. The paper also compares the results obtained from the non-intrusive predictive based ICDA program Vs. the ILI measured data. This paper will be useful for Operators to understand the complementary nature of ICDA with ILI and provide guidance on how combination of these two (2) pipeline integrity tools not only identify the locations at which internal corrosion activity has already occurred but also answers the questions on why it occurred and how would it be mitigated? The Operator managed to assure the integrity of their “difficult-to-pig” pipeline by timely utilisation of the integrity validation tools of ICDA and ILI. By doing this they were able to prevent the occurrence of any catastrophe that may result in an environmental, and subsequently an economic disaster.
