Abstract:
The British evolved an elaborate administrative structure to ensure peace and order for exploiting the material and human resources of the Punjab. The new means of communication and transportation based on western technology served their economic, political, and administrative purposes. A new system of education was introduced chiefly to produce personnel for the middle and lower rungs of administration. The Christian missionaries were closely aligned with the administrators in this project, primarily for gaining converts to Christianity. The socio-economic change brought about by the colonial rule led to a number of movements for socio-religious reform, followed by a new kind of political awakening in the Punjab as in the rest of British India. The political aspirations of Indians were met only partially by the Government of India Act, 1919.

Abstract:
This chapter takes up the theme of “irreverence” that runs through this volume by examining two key Hindu scientific texts that subvert the central Hindu concept of dharma (duty/law/religion). One text recommends that the king himself can and should at times engage in acts that are highly undharmic and irreverent. The other text advocates and facilitates the practice of adultery, thus undermining one of the most basic laws of dharma, the law of wifely fidelity. This clash between science and religion takes on a new form in contemporary India, where a government driven by religious ideology is attempting to subvert genuine science.

Jacob, Jabin T. China’s Evolving Strategy in the Indian Ocean Region. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199479337.003.0013.

Abstract:
Jabin T. Jacob, an Indian analyst on China, provides a more skeptical view on the MSR and the risks China faces in that initiative. Jacob argues that the challenge of the MSR initiative for China is not just the obvious strategic benefits, but also the consequences of the potential failure of the strategy. This might happen due to China’s current economic slowdown which would affect China’s neighbours too. The potential failure of Xi Jinping’s grand foreign policy project also has consequences for his own credibility at home and for the Communist Party of China. If the cash runs out and the going gets tough, might China resort to tested methods of focusing on military assistance, not only in Pakistan, but in other South Asian countries, with potential adverse consequences for India?
