Full textGiven the need to use new metrics to quantify in a holistic, transparent and objective way the social and environmental performance of a country, province or district; The Social Progress Imperative creates the Social Progress Index, a tool that allows evaluation through its three dimensions: The satisfaction of basic human needs, the foundations of well-being that allow to improve the quality of life of its citizens and the opportunities that lead to reach its maximum potential, likewise, this tool allows to compare the results between similar economies and the great capacity to transform the economic progress in social through better government policies. The present study allowed to calculate the Social Progress Index of the province of Talara using the Social Progress Imperative methodology which was developed under a quantitative approach, a non-experimental design and a descriptive scope, obtaining a result of 61,71 points and being placed in this way in a level of social progress medium low; likewise the Basic Human Needs dimension was placed in a low level of progress with 52.79 points, while the Welfare Fundamentals dimension reached a medium low level of progress with 58.42 points and finally the Opportunities dimension that achieved better results when placed in a medium high level of social progress with 73.91 points. In addition, the results obtained from the present study have made it possible to specify the strengths of the province, which are presented through the components of personal security, access to basic knowledge and tolerance and inclusion; on the other hand, points for improvement are shown through the components of nutrition and basic care, drinking water and sanitation, access to information and telecommunications, health and well-being, environmental sustainability and personal rights. At the zonal level, the area composed of the district of Pariñas (zone 3) stans out, who obtained 64.81 points, followed by the area composed of the district of Máncora (zone 1) who obtained 61.75 points, later the area composed of the district La Brea (zone 4) with 59.82 points and finally the area composed of the districts of Los Organos, EL Alto and Lobitos (zone 2) with 57.66 points; all of them are located at a medium low level of social progress, and while it is true that all districts are located at the same level of social progress, the score varies from one another which indicates that there are gaps to be filled which must be attended through the joint and strategic participation of local government, regional, national, private enterprise and the community itself in order to improve the social and environmental performance of the province.

Full textSocial progress is a key element for the development of a country, and both public and private institutions have turned it into an essential topic for the agenda. In this context, reliable information is needed as to have solid support for action plans to improve people’s wellbeing and create opportunities for personal and professional development. The social institution Social Progress Imperative created a tool called Social Progression Index (SPI) whose goal is to measure development of a community, based on a holistic model which includes three dimensions: basic human needs, foundations of well-being, and opportunity. The goal of this paper is to measure social progress in the province of Paita and its seven districts located in the department of Piura. This research has a descriptive scope with a quantitative approach, and its type is nonexperimental. The information analysis process is transversal as it compiles information from secondary sources and from the survey at a determined time, which is 2018, reaching a score of 50.51, which shows a rather low level of progress. Concerning its dimensions, the highest SPI at the province of Paita was gotten from the dimension of Opportunities, reaching a score of 53.52, a low score. On the other hand, the dimension of Foundations of wellbeing got the lowest SPI, scoring 46.24. Ultimately, the dimension of basic human needs got a score of 51.78, considered low. The most appalling problems under each component are detected at nutrition and basic medical care (15.02 points), access to basic knowledge (30.01 points) and access to Advanced Education (32.92 points). The districts for better analysis have been grouped by zones and the following IPS results have been obtained: Zone 1 - Paita (50.38), Zone 2- Colán and Arenal (50.71), Zone 3 - La Huaca (54.17) and Zone 4 - Tamarindo, Amotape and Vichayal (48.07), have reached a low IPS level, it is advisable that a Plan for Local and Regional Concerted Development be considered at the planning and readjustment of local strategic procedures, as well as at the Operational Plans of Public Institutions, prioritizing the aforementioned components. The importance of this piece of research resides in the fact that it is the first time the SPI is measured in the province of Paita and its districts. With this information, public and private institutions will be able to make decisions and create proper conditions for citizens to reach their full potential under a context of respect for liberties and fundamental rights.

Full textSince 2013 Social Progress Index (SPI) is a measurement instrument applied worldwide, which aims to determine the social development of a locality, through a holistic model composed of relevant issues for society. SPI uses indicators like outcome, social and environmental, relevant to the context, and actionable, which are grouped into three dimensions: (a) Basic Human Needs, (b) Foundations of Wellbeing and (c) Opportunity, where each dimension is composed of four components. This document shows the results of the Social Progress Index of the province of Huancabamba 2019. The province was divided into two sectors, identifying as Sector 1, the four districts located on the eastern margin of the province (i.e., Huarmaca, Sonsorillo, San Miguel de el Faique, and Sondor), and as Sector 2, to the four districts located on the west side of it (i.e., Huancabamba, El Carmen de la Frontera, Canchaque, and Lalaquiz). SPI for the province of Huancabamba obtained a score of 49.15, classifying it at a low level. The same classification was obtained in Sector 1 and Sector 2 with scores of 49.00 and 49.30 respectively, results that are distant from SPI of Piura region (58.40) and IPS of the country (72.15), which indicates that the community of Huancabamba province has a social progress lower than that reported by the region and the country. Finally, the results obtained can be used as an input for future research on development and progress to assess the state of the quality of life of the inhabitants of the province.

Full textThe Social Progress Index designed by the Social Progress Imperative (SPI) is created because of the need to have a tool capable of describing the level of social progress including social and environmental indicators, and that the result allows comparisons between nations. Initiatives in different countries in coordination with the SPI, educational institutions, foundations, and non-governmental organizations; they have adapted the model to the context of cities to explain the IPS at the level of dimensions and components according to the characteristics and situation of each locality. This research is part of the calculation of the IPS at the provincial level that CENTRUM PUCP promotes in its academic research mission. The focus of the study is the province of Sechura, which has been selected in the six districts that make up the province in a total sample of 406 surveys obtained from primary sources. The secondary source allowed the collection of information to complete the database of 50 indicators, which were subjected to statistical tests, leaving 47 valid and relevant indicators to explain the level of social progress that integrates the twelve components in the three dimensions. The results obtained, on a scale of 0 to 100 points, classify the IPS of the province of Sechura in the “medium-low” level with 56.02 points, with the Vice district presenting the highest score of 63 points in the “ medium b garlic” level , while the district of Sechura is the one with the lowest score with 53.07 points, due to high levels of perception of insecurity, lack of drinking water and basic sanitation service, low rates of access to higher education, among others. Given that the IPS of the province of Sechura is the first presentation of the level of social progress with social and environmental indicators, it is presented as a fundamental tool to know the deficiencies and weaknesses of the province and reorient social investment strategies.

Full textSocial progress is a very important issue for the development of all nations and it is becoming more and more relevant for the public and private institutions in Peru, mainly at the district level. In this scenario, the priority of acquiring reliable information arises in the search for generating the development in the Social Progress Index (SPI) starting from the analysis of three dimensions: (a) Basic Human Needs, (b) Foundations of Wellbeing, and (c) Opportunities. The SPI allows assessing the effectiveness of the financial success of a country translated into social progress; this focus implies that the State should be capable of satisfying the basic needs of its inhabitants, providing the basic resources in order to improve and keep their living standards, creating the conditions for all of them so as to develop their potential. Likewise, the SPI represents a feasible and reliable indicator for the government and the private institutions so that they may be able, based on their own efforts, to measure the results obtained, through the investments made, in the applications of policies and corrective actions. The measurement applied in the district of Morropón resulted in a Social Progress Index of 61.57 points, which locates it in a "Low medium" level. Before obtaining this result, the Municipality of the District of Morropón had already elaborated the Concerted Development Plan towards 2021 under the Concerted Regional Development Plan of Piura (CRDP) 2016-2021, which considers 07 strategic variables, where six stand out in this study. The CRDP promotes the intervening local economy variable that aims at reducing the gap of the basic needs of the district. Among the components observed are the following: (a) water and sewage, (b) housing, (c) access to information and telecommunications, and (d) tolerance and inclusion, where the most vulnerable citizens will be prioritized.
