In the financial industry, it has been increasingly popular to measure risk. One of the most common quantitative measures for assessing risk is Value-at-Risk (VaR). VaR helps to measure extreme risks that an investor is exposed to. In addition to acquiring information of the expected loss, VaR was introduced in the regulatory frameworks of Basel I and II as a standardized measure of market risk. This thesis is organized in two parts: in the first one, we treat risk measures and acceptability indices from a theoretical point of view, while in the second part, we propose two applications of the quasi-convex results. This dissertation aims to investigate the extent to which British Indians draw upon Asian Indian and British Caucasian cultural values in the purchase of a brown good. Drawing upon previously published research and primary data (including a field trip to India, preliminary investigative interviews, two pilot studies and the main survey questionnaire) eleven hypotheses are developed, simultaneously tested and results discussed. A sample size of 425 usable responses, made it possible to use Factor analysis, Pearson's correlation coefficient and Multinomial logistical regression (MLM). MLM's use

Multimetric ecological condition assessment has become an important biodiversity management tool. This study was the first to examine the reliability of these ecological surrogates across variable environments, and the implications for surrogate efficacy. It was demonstrated that through strategic application and design of the multimetric ecological condition index, the effects of environmental gradients and disturbance regimes can be mitigated, and that ecological condition assessment may serve as a scientifically rigorous approach for conservation planning.
