Guevara-Berger, Marcos. "Mythologie des Indiens Talamanca (Costa Rica)." Paris 10, 1986. http://www.theses.fr/1986PA100198.
Full textThe dissertation includes four parts. The first is a general description of the mythology of the Bribri-Cabecar Indians of the Talamanca area (Costa Rica), that is important for replace the myths in the context of the shamanism. The second part is an effort to understand the shaman’s knowledge about how the cosmos is organized: therapeutic rituals, the journey in the next world of the defunct souls, atmospheric and natural phenomenoms, are explained from the symbolization of the world bringing into play in the myths manipulated by this personage. The third part is a structural analysis of some Talamancan myths on base of Lévi-Strauss’ Mythologique. The fourth part is a compilation of the myths collected by the author in Talamanca in 1983 and in 1984. The general conclusion is that there is a closery connection between the world image built by the shaman and the form of the Indians traditional habitations, and between the cosmological myths and the chichada (corn beer drinking bout) celebrated every time that some people get together to accomplish a productive work or to build a house

Full textThroughout the 20th century, Costa Rica built its own national identity on the “purity and whiteness” of the Costa Rican race. This is the identity paradigm in which the Jamaican population found itself upon arriving on the Caribbean coast in 1870 in order to work on the construction of railways and the banana plantations. This black, non-Spanish-speaking community was a barrier to the Costa Rican national identity project. However, the year 2015, marked a turning point. In virtue of an amendment to the first article of the Constitution, Costa Rica redefined itself as a “multiethnic, multicultural Republic”. This thesis retraces the complex process of integration undergone by the Costa Rican Afro-Caribbean community from 1870 to 2015. This study claims that the existence of this recent reconfiguration of the Costa Rican identity paradigm was in part fostered by one of the country’s most peripheral areas: Limon. The works of linguists such as Robert Le Page and André Tabouret-Keller have proven that linguistic choices can be considered as “identity claims or acts” by means of which a given speaker demonstrates his identity, his background and his aspirations. The people from Limon, by means of their sociolinguistic and identity claims, have thus helped start the aforementioned process of reconfiguration. The well-established use of Creole English clashes with the government’s official policy regarding the use of the official language of Spanish and the indigenous languages. Even though Creole English is spoken in Limon, in 2010 UNESCO classified it in its Atlas of the World’s Endangered Languages. Is there thus a campaign of revitalization in Costa Rica concerning Creole English? In an attempt to analyze the changing identity paradigm from an intersemiotic perspective, this study has chosen to focus on Caribbean literature and art as they both represent powerful mediums through which the expression of the Caribbean identity is portrayed and claimed
Le, Carrer Corine. "Le mouvement du monde : croissance, fécondité et régénération sociale chez les Ngobe de Costa Rica et de Panama." Paris, EHESS, 2010. http://www.theses.fr/2010EHES0415.
Full textThe Ngobe society as studied through out rituals appears to praise brisk movement representing long life. Masculine and feminine puberty as well as birth ritual of the ka cycle institute the life brisk movement on which human growth is depending, while slowness defining pregnancy contravene this life-giving motion. Spouses' activities, social interactions and relationships with hunting game are strongly restricted along maternity since pregnancy impedes the growth of humans and animals. Alike the self-propagating ka that gives the name to the ceremonial cycle, the rituals examined here express growth of humanity in a ways evoking plant growth, parallel to specific timely steps of the food-producing cycle depending on referring either trees or plants. On one level, the giving birth woman is close to a tree while initiating her acknowledged fecundity with her very first born, the mubaj child that matches the kwa mubaj - the first cacao of the first cacao-tree's fructification. As a kind of offshoot, the mubaj offspring triggers female fecundity, open path to the couple's progeny without creating any elderly order, the most distinctive timeless dimension of the Ngobe society. Emerging only within the considered rituals, the notion of bromon is tied to giving birth to fresh bodies. Distribution bromon regenerate the named territorial group (-bu) in which comes the newborn and to which he will pertain if he successfully grows up on the group's land. At play in Ngobe's rituals is never slowing down the life brisk movement so the world is perpetually renewed
