Smith, Peter Wilfred Hesling. "Speech act theory, discourse structure and indirect speech." Thesis, University of Leeds, 1991. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/734/.

Abstract:
Speech Act Theory is concerned with the ways in which language can be used. It originated with Austin, but was developed by Searle. The theories of Austin and Searle are described and several problem areas are identified. If it is to be a viable theory of language usage, speech act theory must be able to integrate with a theory of discourse structure, because if speech acts are identifiable as units of language, then it must be possible include them in a model of discourse. The second chapter examines discourse structure, examining two rival theories: the discourse analysis approach and the conversational analysis approach. Discourse analysis is broadly sympathetic to speech act theory, whereas, conversational analysis is not. The claims of conversational analysis are examined and are found to be wanting in several respects. Speech Act Theory is then discussed with a particular emphasis on the problem of relating speech acts to each other within a larger unit of discourse. It is noted that Austin, by including the expositive class of speech acts, allows for the possibility of relations between speech acts, whereas Searle's description of speech acts effectively rules out any relations between speech acts. The third chapter develops speech acts in terms of a schematic model consisting of cognitive states, a presumed effect of the speech act and an action. The cognitive states are represented using modal and deontic operators on the proposition within epistemic logic. This idea of the description of a speech act in terms of cognitive states is developed in Chapter Four. In Chapter Four, speech acts are related using a communicated cognitive state to pair two speech acts together into a primary and secondary speech act. It is noted that the idea of a primary and secondary speech act is present within the discourse analysis model of discourse (in the form of the initiation-response cycle of exchanges) and also in the conversational analysis approach to discourse (in the form of the adjacency pair). The conclusion from this is that the two approaches are perhaps not so incompatible as might first appear. Chapter Five deals with grammatical sentence types and their possible use in communicating cognitive states. It also examines modal auxiliary verbs and their possible relationship to the modal and deontic operators used in the cognitive state model. In Chapter Six, theories of indirect speech acts are described. An explanation of indirect speech acts is developed using pragmatic maxims and cognitive states to explain why certain indirect forms are chosen. This leads to a theory of linguistic politeness and a use model of speech acts.

Abstract:
This study investigated the advisability of utilizing parents to provide treatment for their dysfluent preschoolers. It involved the development, implementation and evaluation of a specific treatment program involving indirect language stimulation techniques. The primary question asked was whether or not parents can be successful in significantly reducing or eliminating dysfluent speech in their children. The secondary question was whether or not parents can be trained successfully to provide treatment.

Yao, Bo. "Mental simulations in comprehension of direct versus indirect speech quotations." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2011. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/3067/.

Full text
Abstract:
In human communication, direct speech (e.g., Mary said: ‘I’m hungry’) coincides with vivid paralinguistic demonstrations of the reported speech acts whereas indirect speech (e.g., Mary said [that] she was hungry) provides mere descriptions of what was said. Hence, direct speech is usually more vivid and perceptually engaging than indirect speech. This thesis explores how this vividness distinction between the two reporting styles underlies language comprehension. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we found that in both silent reading and listening, direct speech elicited higher brain activity in the voice-selective areas of the auditory cortex than indirect speech, consistent with the intuition of an ‘inner voice’ experience during comprehension of direct speech. In the follow-up behavioural investigations, we demonstrated that this ‘inner voice’ experience could be characterised in terms of modulations of speaking rate, reflected in both behavioural articulation (oral reading) and eye-movement patterns (silent reading). Moreover, we observed context-concordant modulations of pitch and loudness in oral reading but not straightforwardly in silent reading. Finally, we obtained preliminary results which show that in addition to reported speakers’ voices, their facial expressions may also be encoded in silent reading of direct speech but not indirect speech. The results show that individuals are more likely to mentally simulate or imagine reported speakers’ voices and perhaps also their facial expressions during comprehension of direct as opposed to indirect speech, indicating a more vivid representation of the former. The findings are in line with the demonstration hypothesis of direct speech (Clark & Gerrig, 1990) and the embodied theories of language comprehension (e.g., Barsalou, 1999; Zwaan, 2004), suggesting that sensory experiences with pragmatically distinct reporting styles underlie language comprehension.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates Free Indirect Discourse for speech presentations [FIS] in the work of Jane Austen, and presents the discovery that it is a substantial feature of her narrative style, unexpectedly versatile, performing various functions and effects, ranging from the basic to the sophisticated. Critics have often discussed the primary function of Free Indirect Discourse for both speech and thought presentations [FID] as a means of merging the voices of the narrator and a character. They have focused especially on Free Indirect Discourse for thought presentations [FIT] as an important vehicle for presenting the heroine’s subjective ideas within the narrative. A primary function of FIS identified by previous critics is, on the other hand, the narrator’s mimicry of a character’s speech, owing to the gap in the dual perspectives of the narrator and a character. I have made a strict distinction between FIS and FIT and conduct a full survey of Austen’s FIS with a stylistic approach, which demonstrates that Austen’s FIS is not limited to the basic functions formerly discussed. I propose that it serves at least eleven functions, both satirical and non-satirical. I have given names to these functions, for example, FIS for ‘Formal Politeness’, ‘Condensed Conversations’, ‘Voices in Harmony’ and ‘Filtering Information’. The narrator in Austen’s novels sometimes restrains her subjective view and exists as a transparent mediator to present a character’s speech, as in modernist novels. Austen uses these different functions of FIS in specific episodes to silently guide the reader’s interpretation. On a larger scale, Austen uses the embedded nature of FIS in contrast with FIT or Direct Thought in the foreground, which is similar to the painter’s technique of using ‘light and shade’ to create perspective. As a case study, I have analysed Austen’s technique of FIS for ‘Concealment of Plot Development’ in Emma. As part of my survey, I also revise the origin of Austen’s FID. Critics have presumed that Austen must have discovered FID in the work of immediate precursors, particularly Frances Burney. It is true that the writers of the late eighteenth century sporadically used FIT. However, in respect of FIS, I argue that its origin can be traced back to the early eighteenth century, and changes in punctuation marks for speech in English typesetting. Proto-FIS and FIS occasionally appear in the work of major writers of the eighteenth century, such as Samuel Richardson, Joseph Fielding, Laurence Sterne, and Mary Wollstonecraft. Austen may have gained ideas about FIS from the limited usage in their works. However, while FIT became a feature of the fiction of some writers, such as Charlotte Smith and Ann Radcliffe in the 1790s, FIS was rarely used in this period. Austen excavated the proto-style and developed it with remarkable speed. Austen is not just the first writer who employed FIS in a substantial way, but a brilliant exponent of the technique.

Thomas, Kyle. "The Psychology of Common Knowledge: Coordination, Indirect Speech, and Self-Conscious Emotions." Thesis, Harvard University, 2015. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:17467482.

Full text
Abstract:
The way humans cooperate is unparalleled in the animal kingdom, and coordination plays an important role in human cooperation. Common knowledge—an infinite recursion of shared mental states, such that A knows X, A knows that B knows X, A knows that B knows that A knows X, ad infinitum—is strategically important in facilitating coordination. Common knowledge has also played an important theoretical role in many fields, and has been invoked to explain a staggering diversity of social phenomena. However, no previous empirical work has directly explored the psychology of common knowledge. Paper 1 demonstrates that people represent common knowledge, distinguish it from lower levels of shared knowledge (e.g., A knows that B knows X, but nothing more), and that common knowledge facilitates coordination for mutual benefits. The paper reports results from four experiments in which groups of participants interacted in coordination games, with varying levels of knowledge and payoffs. Results showed that common knowledge facilitates coordination, and thus provides an important proof of concept. Paper 2 provides support from a large dyadic psychophysiology study for a recently proposed theory of strategic indirect speech, in which common knowledge plays a central role. Participants’ affective reactions to different types of illicit propositions were consistent with predictions from the theory, as were their responses to survey questions that asked what they would tell their friends about the propositions. By supporting the strategic theory of indirect speech, these results provide indirect evidence that common knowledge plays an important role in explaining certain kinds of indirect speech. Paper 3 provides evidence from two experiments that the self-conscious emotions of embarrassment, shame, and guilt are sensitive to the distinction between common knowledge and lower levels of shared knowledge. In the first experiment, participants read fictional scenarios that might induce these emotions, and reported that they would feel them more strongly if a transgression was common knowledge than if it was merely shared knowledge. In the second experiment, participants performed a karaoke song for a panel of judges, and reported higher levels of embarrassment when their performance was common knowledge than shared knowledge.

Gutierrez, Menez Evangelina.

Abstract:
The novel Leonora by Elena Poniatowska is about Leonora Carrington who was born into a wealthy family and challenged family traditions, and those expectations imposed by her social background and her gender. It will be shown that the main character acts according to a self-construction process free of social impositions. Simone de Beauvoir’s well-known phrase “one is not born a woman, one becomes one”, is one of the feminist positions that contributes to this analysis, as well as the literary techniques explained by Gérard Genette, Oscar Tacca, Mieke Bal and the narratology theories of focalization, direct speech, indirect speech and free indirect speech. The aim of this essay is to analyze the literary techniques that present the self-construction of the main character, and their effects on the reader. The hypotheses of this essay are that in order to present the self-construction of the character, the literary techniques create an effect of alternately zooming the reader in to the main character’s experience, and zooming out to a more objective view. In addition, the literary techniques used to present Carrington’s self-construction seek to show her feminist stance and her transgressions in both private and public spheres. Poniatowska’s literary techniques deliver the message that when a woman is released from social and cultural constraints she has the power to modify spheres.

Polcar, Leah Elizabeth. "Towards understanding the processing of indirect speech acts: Reconsidering the standard pragmatic model of processing." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/280495.

Full text
Abstract:
This investigation tests whether a stage-type model of the processing of indirect speech acts is a fully explanatory model. A stage model, like the Standard Pragmatic Model (SPM), proposes that listeners understand the meaning of an indirect speech act by first determining direct meaning and then checking this meaning against context for sufficiency. It is only when direct meaning is found not to fully capture context that a listener proceeds to understand the meaning of an indirect speech act. This sort of model has been heavily criticized in the extant theoretical and empirical research, though this investigation shows much of this criticism to be faulty and/or irrelevant to indirect speech act processing. Here, minor revision of the SPM is proposed through the introduction of Cdirect and C indirect meanings that makes the modified SPM sensitive to issues of conventionality. Two experiments test this modified model (the MSPM). Results of the first experiment showed that the MSPM is the most explanatory model in explaining the processing of non-conventional indirect speech acts. The second experiment was designed to replicate an earlier experiment by Shapiro and Murphy (1993) and to investigate the influence of conventionality on the processing of indirect speech acts. The results of the conventionality analysis allow no clear conclusions about how conventional indirect speech acts are processed, but do call the results of the Shapiro and Murphy (1993) investigation into question. Additionally, some indirect proof is found that shows that conventionality influences the processing of indirect speech acts by making judgments of direct meaning difficult when conventional cues are present. Implications of these results are discussed and overall, the MSPM is found to be the best model for describing indirect speech act processing.

Abstract:
This masters thesis examines the verbal moods used in indirect speech in modern German. For that purpose, a corpus was collected that will be analysed. This corpus contains 400 online journalistic articles from two news sources: SPIEGEL ONLINE and FAZ (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung). In order to carry out this research, various hypotheses are assumed according to which the choice of the mood of indirect discourse is influenced by diverse factors such as: the place and tense of the reporting verb, factivity of the reporting verb, verb type of indirect speech, type of subordinate clause, degree of embedding and distance between the verbs of indirect speech and the reporting verb. The data was analised statistically since this is a variation study. The most important results are the factors that promote the use of indicative in indirect speech: pre-position of the reporting verb (tendency); the present or present perfect tenses of the reporting verb; subordinate clauses introduced by dass; sein or werden as the verb of indirect speech and as an auxiliary of a passive construction; the degree of embedding of a subordinate clause, and the degree of distance between the verbs.

Bonthoux-Philippe, Brigitte. "Is THAT all right ? Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019AIXM0416.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis tackles the question of the role played by THAT in the so-called Indirect Speech utterances. After exploring the information previously available in the first chapter, which shows that some contexts make the presence of the conjunction compulsory, the second and third chapters, organized around the non-neutral reporting verbs on one side and the commonest reporting verb say on the other, focus on its usage in American English through the use of the web-based Corpus of Contemporary American English. This leads to the exploration of the intentionality of the speaker using the pattern mentioned above. More specifically, this study tests the idea that the intentionality might impact the presence of THAT, and inversely, that its absence or presence can help recognize the intentionality of the speaker and thus can hint at differentiated occurrences having the same structure but not the same meaning. In turn, this implies that some items answer the definition of indirect speech when others fall outside its scope. In the former cases, its absence brings nuances (questioning the contents of the subordinate or showing it as false). In the latter cases, the substance of the seeming subordinate seems more important than the introducing clause which is therefore used to assert strongly, to introduce facts, or to present information without committing

Floquet, Florence. "La grammaire du monologue intérieur." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019AIXM0070.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the literary phenomenon known as “interior monologue” from a grammatical point of view, and is based on a clear distinction between “interior monologue” and what is called “stream of consciousness”, both phenomena usually being seen as the same. The main objectives are therefore to define what we call “interior monologue” in order to confront this definition with English language literary texts, and to analyse the various linguistic techniques used to represent this special discourse. Interior monologue is therefore seen not as a linguistic technique but as a narratological category. This particular discourse is represented using different linguistic techniques: “immediate discourse” but also some of the reported speech techniques, with (free) direct speech as the core of the category, and indirect speech at its periphery, free indirect speech navigating between those two poles. These techniques differ both in their form and in the conception of the interior discourse they convey, but they always create the illusion of giving access to the (fictional) original discourse. It is for this reason that we want to show the possibility for the author or the narrator to use a syntactic form suggesting a reported discourse seemingly closely linked to the original discourse, to represent something that sometimes cannot be considered as verbal

Abstract:
For ages, the oral interpretation of tales and stories has been a worldwide tradition tied to entertainment, education, and perpetuation of culture. During the last decades, some works have focused on the analysis of this particular speaking style rich in subtle expressive nuances represented by specific acoustic cues. In line with this fact, there has also been a growing interest in the development of storytelling applications, such as those related to interactive storytelling. This thesis deals with one of the key aspects of audiovisual storytellers: improving the naturalness of the expressive synthetic speech by analysing the storytelling speech in detail, together with providing better non-verbal language to a speaking avatar by synchronizing that speech with its gestures. To that effect, it is necessary to understand in detail the acoustic characteristics of this particular speaking style and the interaction between speech and gestures. Regarding the acoustic characteristics of storytelling speech, the related literature has dealt with the acoustic analysis of storytelling speech in terms of prosody, being only suggested that voice quality may play an important role for the modelling of its subtleties. In this thesis, the role of both prosody and voice quality in indirect storytelling speech is analysed across languages to identify the main expressive categories it is composed of together with the acoustic parameters that characterize them. To do so, an analysis methodology is proposed to annotate this particular speaking style at the sentence level based on storytelling discourse modes (narrative, descriptive, and dialogue), besides introducing narrative sub-modes. Considering this annotation methodology, the indirect speech of a story oriented to a young audience (covering the Spanish, English, French, and German versions) is analysed in terms of prosody and voice quality through statistical and discriminant analyses, after classifying the sentence-level utterances of the story in their corresponding expressive categories. The results confirm the existence of storytelling categories containing subtle expressive nuances across the considered languages beyond narrators' personal styles. In this sense, evidences are presented suggesting that such storytelling expressive categories are conveyed with subtler speech nuances than basic emotions by comparing their acoustic patterns to the ones obtained from emotional speech data. The analyses also show that both prosody and voice quality contribute almost equally to the discrimination among storytelling expressive categories, being conveyed with similar acoustic patterns across languages. It is also worth noting the strong relationship observed in the selection of the expressive category per utterance across the narrators even when, up to our knowledge, no previous indications were given to them. In order to translate all these expressive categories to a corpus-based Text-To-Speech system, the recording of a speech corpus for each category would be required. However, building ad-hoc speech corpora for each and every specific expressive style becomes a very daunting task. In this work, we introduce an alternative based on an analysis-oriented-to-synthesis methodology designed to derive rule-based models from a small but representative set of utterances, which can be used to generate storytelling speech from neutral speech. The experiments conducted on increasing suspense as a proof of concept show the viability of the proposal in terms of naturalness and storytelling resemblance. Finally, in what concerns the interaction between speech and gestures, an analysis is performed in terms of time and emphasis oriented to drive a 3D storytelling avatar. To that effect, strength indicators are defined for speech and gestures. After validating them through perceptual tests, an intensity rule is obtained from their correlation. Moreover, a synchrony rule is derived to determine temporal correspondences between speech and gestures. These analyses have been conducted on aggressive and neutral performances to cover a broad range of emphatic levels as a first step to evaluate the integration of a speaking avatar after the expressive Text-To-Speech system.

Abstract:
This thesis consists of a critical study about Machado de Assis\'s Quincas Borba, supporting the main hypothesis that the protagonist\'s psychic crisis corresponds to the complexity of the novel\'s form. In this novel, a versatile narrative voice portrays a \"split\" character whose trajectory culminates in madness, and death. In Brazil\'s literary scene, Machado de Assis was in search of fictional modalities to suit his artistic profile, having produced a disquieting work that defied the schemes set out by Romanticism and Naturalism (PASSOS, 2007). Furthermore, the crisis of the character and the questioning of the novel\'s form can be associated with the compositional crisis faced by the author during the writing process of Quincas Borba. The novel has been rewritten, resulting in differences between the serial version, published in A Estação (1886-1891), and the book version (1891). We analyse these variants focusing on the use that the author makes of free indirect speech in the representation of characters\'s inner self, including the protagonist. We aim to consider how Rubião\'s consciousness fragmentation is carried out by the narrator, and to understand the meaning of the rapport established among this form of fragmentation and other elements in the novel. This research will, therefore, analyse the means of portraying a character in the midst of psychic disintegration in a work whose very writing process was especially problematic.

Abstract:

Thesis, Lyon, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018LYSE3037.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is dedicated to prohibitive commands in modern Russian and studies the various speech strategies expressing negative commands. Prohibitive speech acts correspond to compulsory and performative utterances urging the non-accomplishment of an action perceived as undesirable by the speaker. Due to this utterance, the addressee has no other option than compliance, which was not the case before.Prohibitive commands are expressed at various communication levels and by a wide range of linguistic means: pragmatic, syntactic or lexical.Besides performative utterances, prohibition can be expressed by utterances with a prohibitive illocutionary force, including indirect speech acts. Although negative commands can be expressed by various strategies, they are not interchangeable. On the one hand, any negative command cannot be used in all contexts and in addition, the registers are different. On the other hand, the disparities in the illocutionary force of command of the various prohibitive strategies could be established. The illocutionary force of a prohibitive command both results from the selected linguistic strategy, but also from the means of modulation that can be used. This study enabled us to establish a typology of negative commands. The latter can be displayed in three categories: utterances whose prohibitive meaning occurs exceptionally, usually prohibitive utterances and invariably prohibitive utterances. Furthermore, the evolution of the Russian language has to be taken into account, among others by a contamination effect from European languages. This evolution leads to a less frequent resort to the strongest prohibitive commands, as well as to the increasing use of politeness strategies

Abstract:
This research is entitled Functioning of the Triangle of Internalized Subjectivity in the Modern Novel. It aims at studying the speech and the inner thoughts of the subject of enunciation in fiction often marked by the "interference" in enunciation tracks. The three targeted discursive and narrative processes are internal monologue (MI), free indirect speech ( DIL) and the point of view (PDV) . The examination of the three pillars of the inner language relies on the contributions of linguistics of enunciation, of polyphony and pragmatic. This research targets nine novels that we can classify as belonging to the "modern novel" category. These novels belong to three French authors who have developed narratives in which the source of speaker and enunciator is a cause of ambiguity. The difficulty of dealing with the novelistic enunciation in a textual corpus chosen in this case is mainly due to the blurring of boundaries between reporting speech and reported speech. Marcel Proust, Claude Simon and Nathalie Sarraute do not belong to the same aesthetic and ideological trends, but what they have in common is that they all offer a novel configuration that makes us raise questions about the status of the speaker and the enunciator in a form of expression that is not always verbalized

Abstract:
Interpolated clauses have a bad reputation in the narrative field, although they are very useful in indicating the source of lines ; they arouse numerous theoretical as well as practical controversies. Seldom dealt with in grammatical studies, they are often censured by normative discourses whenever they stray from the prototypical he said, as they transgress certain syntactic and logical rules. This censure discourages those authors who lament their monotony from trying to avoid this thanks to distributive and lexical variations. This study aims at showing the analytical difficulties that are raised by this form – many variants of which are rejected as incorrect –, and seeks to question the bases of such judgments. Looking at a vast, diachronic corpus of narrative texts invites us to qualify its monotony by accounting for its history, one of formal and functional diversification : interpolated clauses do not accompagny dialogues simply to point out their speakers, they have many textual roles that put them at the centre of narratorial and aesthetic issues

Abstract:
ABSTRACT - Healthcare human resources management is a relevant issue in policy formulation, addressing changes in care providing and needs, as well as demographic and socioeconomic features. It is composed by the estimate number of healthcare professionals needed to achieve the proposed targets and there are different methods of performing it. According to the “Direção Geral de Saúde”, one Speech Therapist is considered sufficient for 60.000 inhabitants – figures calculated by using disease prevalence studies. However, the number of human resources is intricately linked to productivity determined by measure units such as procedures. Thus, factors like patient complexity and indirect work can influence the final result. This study intends to ascertain the human resources needs in Speech Therapy by evaluating the activity of these hospital services in the “Lisboa e Vale do Tejo” region and applying the advocating formula proposed by the Health Ministry, based in a supply model. The study involved 23 Speech Therapists from 9 hospitals. A log sheet of daily work was filled for 5 non consecutive days, to appraise the time spent in different activities. We found that 63,21% of the work schedule was spent in performing direct actions, while 36,76% was used in patient related indirect actions, which are not accounted for in the proposed formula. Including the different components, (direct and indirect actions), we find that the existing number of healthcare professionals in the “Lisboa e Vale do Tejo” region is sufficient, although a contradictory result is achieved when conducting an institution driven analysis.

Full text
Abstract:
The interest in manipulation is growing in all areas of human communication. It is fully realised mainly through the language, whether combined or not with other means of communication. However, in linguistics, studies conducted on this subject are virtually non-existent.Manipulation by the discourse is an effective solution for realising the communication that seems compromised when the tension is extreme between the goals of the speaker on the one hand, and the means available including constraints of the context, on the other hand. The strategy of manipulation by the discourse is similar to rhetoric, while diverting it, because manipulation must keep secret its objectives and its means of realisation. Although it may use argumentation, most often, it avoids it.Political discourse is one of the best examples of this extreme tension which is necessary to the manipulation. The 2007 presidential campaign in France is the most recent and perhaps most suitable model for the study of the manipulation by the discourse. This research aims to report on linguistic means of achieving manipulation strategies in a global approach of discourse analysis. It proceeds by a detailed examination of its various formal supports: semantic variations, syntactic and discourse organization, interactions between the constituents, the role of the repetition, the implication etc. Given the importance of the context in its realization, the pragmatic approach, with the theory of the speech acts, turned out to be the most appropriate choice. Through many examples based on a corpus of 195 political speeches, it helps explain how the macro-speech act of manipulation functions, and it helps develop a global theory of manipulation by the discourse

Abstract:
Contemporary approaches to natural language processing are predominantly based on statistical machine learning from large amounts of text, which has been manually annotated with the linguistic structure of interest. However, such complete supervision is currently only available for the world's major languages, in a limited number of domains and for a limited range of tasks. As an alternative, this dissertation considers methods for linguistic structure prediction that can make use of incomplete and cross-lingual supervision, with the prospect of making linguistic processing tools more widely available at a lower cost. An overarching theme of this work is the use of structured discriminative latent variable models for learning with indirect and ambiguous supervision; as instantiated, these models admit rich model features while retaining efficient learning and inference properties. The first contribution to this end is a latent-variable model for fine-grained sentiment analysis with coarse-grained indirect supervision. The second is a model for cross-lingual word-cluster induction and the application thereof to cross-lingual model transfer. The third is a method for adapting multi-source discriminative cross-lingual transfer models to target languages, by means of typologically informed selective parameter sharing. The fourth is an ambiguity-aware self- and ensemble-training algorithm, which is applied to target language adaptation and relexicalization of delexicalized cross-lingual transfer parsers. The fifth is a set of sequence-labeling models that combine constraints at the level of tokens and types, and an instantiation of these models for part-of-speech tagging with incomplete cross-lingual and crowdsourced supervision. In addition to these contributions, comprehensive overviews are provided of structured prediction with no or incomplete supervision, as well as of learning in the multilingual and cross-lingual settings. Through careful empirical evaluation, it is established that the proposed methods can be used to create substantially more accurate tools for linguistic processing, compared to both unsupervised methods and to recently proposed cross-lingual methods. The empirical support for this claim is particularly strong in the latter case; our models for syntactic dependency parsing and part-of-speech tagging achieve the hitherto best published results for a wide number of target languages, in the setting where no annotated training data is available in the target language.

Abstract:
For high performance drive applications, the accuracy of speed estimation from a digital shaft encoder is reduced in the low speed range. Drive performance can be further impaired at low speed when low cost low-resolution digital encoders are used. This thesis contributes to the development of a quasi-sensorless solution for AC induction motor drives, where instead of a conventional position sensor and MH" or closed loop observer, an artificial intelligence based 64PPR SKF sensor bearing is proposed. Furthermore, the performance of speed-controlled IM drives is sensitive to rotor time constant mismatch. A newly developed closed loop RMLE-GNA observer is proposed as a new adaption mechanism with a Model Reference Adaptive Scheme for rotor flux estimation and on-fine rotor time constant adaptation. For high performance sensorless speed controlled IM drive applications, the IM is required to operate at low speed in all four-quadrants in a stable manner whilst maintaining constant air-gap flux and torque. Such low speed operation fails with conventional open loop observers and MRAS, and closed loop observers such as EKF suffer from a tuning problem and extensive computing time. Parameter uncertainty is a further factor limiting drive performance. A new joint state estimation and parameter adaptation closed loop Recursive Maximum Likelihood Estimator with an iterative Gauss Newton Raphson Algorithm (RMLE-GNA) is developed for the sensorless speed estimation and on-line parameter adaptation of IM drives. Two case studies are presented: correct and stable convergence of the closed loop observer within two iteration local loops utilising a full order IM model, and correct and stable convergence within a single iteration local loop utilising a simplified full order IM model. In both cases it is shown that the closed loop observer can provide satisfactory and stable convergence for 4-quadrant operation. Of particular interest are the correct convergence, robustness against parameter mismatch and the stability of the sensorless speed controlled IM drive at zero speed and zero stator flux frequency. Thus, a small signal transfer function of the closed loop observer with the sensorless speed vector controlled IM drives is derived. The stability analysis shows the robustness and the convergence of the observer for 4-quadrant operation for high and low speed' and up to the rated load torque. The effect of various machine model parameters on the stability and convergence of the RMLE-GNA-based sensorless drive system is investigated, providing an insight into the inherent dynamic characteristics of the proposed closed loop observer-based sensorless speed-controlled IM drives.

Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013AIXM3090.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates the use of reporting clauses and reporting parentheticals in final and medial position in direct and indirect (reported) speech. Traditional grammatical models seem to offer no satisfactory explanation as regards to final and medial positions of the reporting clause or parenthetical within the sentence. Though grammatical descriptions give formal structure to the phenomenon, they also tend to limit its scope and need to be stretched to accommodate the reality of reporting clauses and parentheticals in literary texts.Analysing medial and final reporting clauses within the framework of French théorie de l’énonciation shows that they blur the frontier between reported and non-reported speech more often than not. From a literary point of view, medial and final positions can be considered as choices made for stylistic reasons, in which case the emphasis is put on reporting clauses as creating textual cohesion rather than causing rupture within the narrative

Abstract:
This study falls in the theoretical framework of enunciation involving sociolinguistic and communicative aspects. It is a crossover field of linguistics with that of information science, sociology and anthropology. It focuses on media communication, particularly the issue of responsibility in news writing. The analysis relates more specifically to the facts of language (reported speech) in news writing and the impact it can have on the position of the reporting person. This is an analysis of linguistic forms of subjectivity in journalistic texts, the aim being to identify to what extent the form of reported speech shapes the point of view of the journalist utterer. The task is about distinguishing, through texts that can be said to be objective journalistic pieces of writing that meet the requirements of ethics, the mechanisms by which viewpoints are expressed and leading to subjective points of views. Transversally, the analysis provides answers to two key questions: what does subjective mean? How is this concept applied in reported speech with respect to miscellaneous events related in Senegalese daily newspapers? Given its sociolinguistic, communicative and interactional dimensions, the analysis focuses on three main areas: the speaking subject (research on evaluative, axiological and socio-emotional traces of its presence), the content (morphosyntactic and semantic exploration) and the media communication contract (media production device)

Abstract:
This work presents a study of linguistic expressions of opinion from different sources in Spanish texts. The work includes the definition of a model for opinion predicates and their arguments (source, topic and message), the creation of a lexicon of opinion predicates which have information from the model associated, and the implementation of three systems. The first system, based on contextual rules, gets good results for the F-measure score (partial match): predicate, 92%; source, 81%; topic, 75%; message, 89%; full opinion, 85%. In addition, for source identification the F-measure for exact match is 79%. The second system, based on Conditional Random Fields (CRF), was developed only for the identification of sources, giving 76% of F-measure (exact match). The third system, which combines the two techniques (rules and CRF), gives a value of 83% of F-measure (exact match), showing that the combination yields interesting results. As regards the identification of sources, our system compared to other work developed for languages other than Spanish, gives very satisfactory results. Indeed these works had scores that fall between 63% and 89.5%.Moreover, in addition to the systems made for the identification of opinions, our work has led to the construction of several resources for Spanish: a lexicon of opinion predicates, a 13,000 words corpus with opinions annotated and a 40,000 words corpus with opinion predicates end sources annotated

Abstract:
Based on a contextualized data extracted from ESLO, an oral corpus of modern French, this PhD thesis examines the variation in the actualization of represented (reported) speech, with a double aim: to account for their structural complexity in oral interaction and to analyze their influence on the construction of the interlocutive relation and thematic paths. After defining the external borders of the phenomenon and placing the concept of represented speech with regard to several linguistic and non-linguistic approaches that reflect its epistemological complexity, this study engages in two directions. The first one, formal, will define represented speech as grammatical constructions, determined by the inseparability of three criteria: the bipartite structure, the enunciation offset and the metadiscursive functioning. The main contribution of this analysis is being illustrated in the reinterpretation of the link between “quoting discourse” and “quoted discourse”, analyzed in the macrosyntactic perspective that applies to all occurrences of represented speech in oral interaction. The second direction, which relates to the links between represented speech and the construction of an interlocutive relation, studies several represented speech configurations in context, with two aims: the study of the relation to the interlocutor, through the staging and the authenticity illusion conveyed by represented speech, and the study of the relation to oneself, the speaker, constructing a self-image through his interventions in the reconstruction of other words

Abstract:

Abstract:
Consistently, reports in the literature have identified that a sedentary lifestyle contributes to the progression of a range of chronic degenerative diseases. The measurement of energy expenditure and physical activity pattern in children is a challenge for all professionals interested in paediatric health and from a broader perspective, the public health fraternity charged with considering longer term health consequences of physical inactivity. The primary objective of this thesis was to identify a suitable indirect and objective measurement technique for the assessment of energy expenditure and physical activity pattern in children. The ideal characteristics of such a technique are that it should be reproducible and have been validated against a criterion reference method. To achieve this goal, a series of methodological studies were undertaken (Chapters II and III). This work was essential to increase accuracy during the individualised laboratory calibration process and further minimise prediction errors when analysing data from 7 days of monitoring under free-living conditions in the second part of the study (Chapters IV and V). In the first study to verify the combined effect of body position, apparatus and distraction on children's resting metabolic rate (RMR), experiments were carried out on 14 children aged 8-12 (mean age = 10.1 years ± 1.4). Each participant underwent 2 test sessions, one week apart under three different situations: a) using mouthpiece and nose-clip (MN) or facemask (FM); b) sitting (SEAT) or lying (LY) and c) TV viewing (TV) or no TV viewing. In the first session, following 20 min rest and watching TV, the following protocol was used: LY: 20 min - stabilisation; 10 min using MN and 10 min using FM. Body position was then changed to seated: 20 min stabilisation; 10 min using FM; 10 min using MN. In the second session, FM and MN order was changed and participants did not watch TV. Data were analysed according to the eight combinations among the three studied parameters. Repeated measures ANOVA indicated statistically significant differences for &VO2 (p=0.01) and RMR (p=0.02), with TVMNSEAT showing higher values than TVFMLY. Bland-Altman analysis showed a bias for &VO2, &VCO2, RQ and RMR between TVFMLY and TVMNSEAT of -17.8±14.5 ml.min-1, -8.8±14.5 ml. min-1, 0.03±0.05 and -115.2±101.9 kcal.d-1, respectively. There were no differences in RMR measurements due to body position and apparatus when each variable was isolated. Analyses of distraction in three of four combinations indicated no difference between TV and no TV. In summary, different parameter combinations can result in increased bias and variability and thereby reported differences among children's RMR measurement. The second study dealt with treadmill adaptation and determination of self-selected (SS) walking speed. Assessment of individual and group differences in metabolic energy expenditure using oxygen uptake requires that individuals are comfortable with, and can accommodate to, the equipment being utilised. In this study, a detailed proposal for an adaptation protocol based on the SS was developed. Experiments were carried out on 27 children aged 8-12 (mean age = 10.3±1.2 yr). Results from three treadmill tests following the adaptation protocol showed similar results for step length with no significant differences among tests and lower and no statistically significant variability within- and between-days. Additionally, no statistically significant differences between SS determined over-ground and on a treadmill were verified. These results suggest that SS speed determined over-ground is reproducible on a treadmill and the 10 min familiarisation protocol based on this speed provided sufficient exposure to achieve accommodation to the treadmill. The purpose of the third study was to verify within- and between-day repeatability and variability in children's oxygen uptake ( &VO2), gross economy (GE) [ &VO2 divided by speed] and heart rate (HR) during treadmill walking based on SS. 14 children (mean age = 10.2±1.4 yr) undertook 3 testing sessions over 2 days in which four walking speeds, including SS, were tested. Within- and between-day repeatability was assessed using the Bland and Altman method and coefficients of variability (CV) were determined for each child across exercise bouts and averaged to obtain a mean group CV value for &VO2, GE and HR per speed. Repeated measures ANOVA showed no statistically significant differences in within- or between-day CV for &VO2, GE or HR at any speed. Repeatability within and between-day for &VO2, GE and HR for all speeds was verified. These results suggest that submaximal &V O2 during treadmill walking is stable and reproducible at a range of speeds based on children's SS. In the fourth study, the objective was to establish the effect of walking speed on substrate oxidation during a treadmill protocol based on SS. Experiments were carried out on 12 girls aged 8-12 (mean age = 9.9±1.4 yr). Each participant underwent 2 test sessions, one week apart. Workloads on the treadmill included 2 speeds slower than SS (1.6 [V1] and 0.8 km.h-1 [V2] slower than SS), SS (V3), and a speed 0.8 km.h-1 faster than SS (V4). Indirect calorimetry from respired gas measurements enabled total fat (FO) and carbohydrate (CHO) oxidation rates to be calculated according to the non-protein respiratory quotient (Peronnet and Massicote, 1991) and percentage of CHO and FO calculations using equations from McGilvery and Goldstein (1983). Repeated measures ANOVA followed by a Tukey Post Hoc test (p< 0.05) was used to verify differences in CHO and FO rates among speeds. Paired T-test was used to verify differences in CHO and FO rates between tests per velocity. The reliability between-day was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Results showed significant differences for CHO among all speeds, as well as significant differences for FO between V1 and V2 against V3 and V4 in both tests. Analyses between trials per velocity showed no significant substrate use differences as well as acceptable reliability. At the self-selected speed (V3) there was an accentuation in FO reduction as well as an increase in CHO oxidation. The purpose of the fifth study was to determine whether there were differences in substrate oxidation between girls (G) and women (W) during a treadmill protocol based on SS. Experiments were carried out on 12 G aged 8-12 (mean age = 9.9±1.4 yr) and 12 W aged 25-38 (mean age = 32.3±3.8 yr). The treadmill protocol included 6 min workloads followed by 5 min rest periods. Workloads included 2 speeds slower than SS (1.6 (V1) and 0.8 km.h-1 (V2) slower than SS), SS (V3), and a speed 0.8 km.h-1 faster than SS (V4). Total fat and carbohydrate (CHO) oxidation rates were calculated from indirect calorimetry according to the non-protein respiratory quotient. Repeated measures ANOVA followed by a Tukey Post Hoc test was used to verify intra-test differences in CHO and fat oxidation rates among speeds. Intergroup differences were analysed using paired T-test. Fat utilisation in W achieved a plateau at a relative velocity 0.8 km.h-1 slower than SS, but for G, fat utilisation increased until SS, and then stabilised upon reaching the higher velocity. CHO oxidation curves rose abruptly above V2 for W, while for G the acute increase occurred after SS (V3). Collectively, these results indicate that as walking intensity increases G are able to meet the energy demands of the work by increasing fat oxidation together with the increased CHO oxidation up to SS. In contrast for W, increasing CHO oxidation is associated with an early decrease in fat utilisation at a velocity slower than the self-selected speed. The sixth study dealt with validation of indirect techniques for the measurement of energy expenditure in free-living conditions against the DLW technique. Experiments were carried out on 19 children aged 8-12 (mean age = 10.3±1.0 yr). To indirectly predict energy expenditure 12 different procedures were used. Only one procedure, combining activity and heart rate (AHbranched), was based on a group equation, the others were based on individualised regression. Three of the individually-based techniques were able to accurately predict energy expenditure in free-living conditions. These tecniques were HRPAnetRMR using HRnet [HR exercise minus sleep HR (SHR)] against PAnet (measured PA exercise minus measured RMR) and upper and lower body equations corrected by RMR; HRPAnet4act using the same procedure but corrected by the mean resting &VO2 for 4 resting activities [(4act) = supine watching TV, sitting watching TV, sitting playing computer games and standing], and HRPALBnet4act using only lower body activities and corrected by 4act. HRPAnetRMR was only slightly more accurate than HRPAnet4act and HRPALBnet4act, but this technique is only adjusted by RMR whereas the other two are heavily dependent on more complex laboratory calibration. Bland and Altman (1986) analyses showed no significant differences between AHbranched predicted and measured TEE using the DLW technique. A SEE of 79 kcal.d-1 and a mean difference of 72 kcal.d-1, with a 95% CI ranging from -238 to 93.9 kcal.d-1 was found. In addition, no significant differences between predicted HRPAnetRMR and measured TEE using DLW were found, showing an SEE of 99 kcal.d-1 and a mean difference of -67 kcal.d-1, and a 95% CI ranging from -276.6 to 141.9 kcal.d-1. AHbranched and HRPAnetRMR were both valid and similarly suitable for the prediction of energy expenditure in children under free-living conditions. Significant associations between DLWAEE and the after-school time window indicated that this time window as an important discretionary period representative of children physical activity. However, the duration of the after-school time windows should be more carefully considered. Accelerometer data showed a better association between the largest after-school time window (3.5 hr) and measured TEE. The final study, completed with 19 children aged 8-12 (10.3±1.0 yr) highlighted, under laboratory conditions across a range of walking and running speeds, the inadequacy of the use of the standard MET in children. This traditional approach overestimates energy expenditure with an increased difference linearly related to speed increments. Minute-by-minute analyses of 7 days of free-living monitoring showed an average overestimation of 64 minutes per day for moderate-to-vigorousphysical- activity (MVPA) using the standard MET compared with the individually measured MET. For all intensities, these differences were statistically significant (p< 0.001). The second part of this study showed a variability of 20% in the average time spent at MVPA when comparing HR I 140 bpm and HR > 50%P &VO2 (P &VO2 = the highest &VO2 observed during an exercise test to exhaustion). Results of the current study compared to observations in the literature showed that HR I 140 bpm consistently estimates lower MVPA time than HR > 50%P &VO2. When these two PA indices were compared with individual and standard MET measured minute-byminute, statistically significant differences were verified among all of them at MPA, but no differences were verified at VPA, except between individual and standard METs. However, whether each one of the PA indices used are under- or overestimating time at MVPA is still debatable due to the lack of a gold standard. Finally, each index used in this study classified different numbers of participants as achieving the PA target of 60 min.d-1. The wide variability between indices when attempting to classify children who are achieving the recommended target is cause for great concern because habitually these indices are utilised as screening tools in paediatric and public health settings and used to guide behavioural interventions.

Abstract:
The research developed in this PhD report deal with indirect stator field oriented control (ISFOC) of an induction motor drive (IM), with and without speed sensor. The developed approach uses the method with Model Reference Adaptive System (MRAS). The reference model and the adjustable one, which are developed in stationary stator reference frame, are used to estimate the rotor speed, the rotor resistance and the simultaneous estimation of speed and rotor resistance of the (IM) from the knowledge of the stator currents and voltages. To cancel the static error in the speed control and ameliorate subsequently the performance results, the load torque, which can be considered as a disturbance, has been estimated based on the state variables of the motor to be controlled. For this, a procedure was developed to estimate the torque of the same machine based on a Luenberger observer. The numerical simulations results obtained with Matlab-Simulink software package as well as the experimental results, obtained on two platforms for testing asynchronous machines each equipped with a real time controller board of dSPACE, validate the developed algorithms

Abstract:
There is a growing population of individuals using Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) in need of evidence-based intervention from highly qualified personnel. However, not all speech pathology programs offer AAC coursework and/or practicum opportunities, and practicing speech-language pathologists (SLPs) report low levels of confidence and expertise in working with individuals using AAC. Therefore, there is a need to develop more innovative pre-professional training programs to better equip the next generation of SLPs with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide high-quality, evidence-based AAC interventions. Telepractice is emerging as an inventive way to provide both direct and indirect intervention services, and could theoretically be used to support pre-professional training by providing clinicians the opportunity to engage in direct services with individuals using AAC concurrently while receiving supervision from a skilled mentor. A thorough review of the literature revealed limited information and data regarding tele-AAC for direct and indirect service delivery. This investigation examined the feasibility and effectiveness of utilizing telepractice to train pre-professional clinicians regarding AAC interventions while in the context of service delivery both on-site and via telepractice. A single-subject, multiple baseline design was employed to examine the impact of real-time supervisory guidance offered via telepractice to pre-professional clinicians (Active Consultation) on the performance of the clinicians and the clients in each service delivery condition. Data was gathered on the number of target language acts modeled by the clinicians and generated by the clients when Active Consultation was provided. The results supported the use of telepractice for supervision, and as a service delivery method for AAC users.

In fictional narratives, the style of language a writer adopts can often have a direct and profound influence on the stylistic effects it brings forth. Jane Austen is known for her use of free indirect speech, which is said to blend the narrator’s speech with the character’s speech, creating the effect of the narrator mimicking or mocking the characters. Previous studies have suggested that, due to the discrepancies between the source language and the target language, certain translational difficulties may arise from translating free indirect speech. The present study uses Pride and Prejudice and its translations as case study materials, in an attempt to find out what strategies translators employ to deal with the free indirect speech source texts in Pride and Prejudice. The source texts collected in this research are categorized based on the discourse markers of free indirect speech, and three popular translations of Pride and Prejudice are used in the research. The present thesis found that when translating free indirect speech texts, there are some commonly used translation strategies, with colloquialization, clarification of pronominal references or character titles, the addition of transitive action or perception verbs, and the addition of punctuation devices being the more used. The results of the study suggest that making the target text more colloquial is an important tactic for the translation of free indirect speech. Towards a better translational effort with this type of narrative speech in the future, the study also points out some possible directions.

Reese, Brian Jon 1973. "Bias in questions." Thesis, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/3280.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation investigates three interrogative sentence types that are each associated with a particular speaker bias. In asking one of these questions, the speaker invariably conveys a prior expectation, or belief, that a specific answer to the question is the true one. These sentence types include reversed-polarity tag questions, negative polar questions, and questions containing a strong negative polarity item or a constituent that is emphatically focused. For each of these three question types, I address the two questions: (1) What kind of meaning is bias; and (2) what grammatical feature, if any, is the bias linked to? In answer to the first question, I argue that bias is an assertion (rather than, for example, a conversational implicature). As a result, biased questions can be thought of as a type of indirect speech act (Searle 1975). Following Asher and Lascarides (2001), I model biased questions as instances of a complex speech act type Assertion · Question. On this analysis, biased questions are simultaneously assertions and questions. I provide evidence, for this claim, showing these question types share distributional properties of both assertions and questions. With regard to the second question, I argue that intonation, in addition to syntax and compositional and lexical semantics, plays a key role in linking the use of the kind of interrogative sentence described above to an assertion. Indeed, one of the benefits to studying biased questions is that they provide a case study of the interaction of intonation and discourse function. I begin to develop an analysis of intonation within the theory of discourse provided by Asher and Lascarides (2003) which builds on the work of Pierrehumbert and Hirschberg (1990) and Steedman (2000, 2003), amongst others. Specifically, I argue that intonation provides information about the speakers cognitive state, i.e. about his or her beliefs and intentions. Thus intonation contributes information that can be used to compute the rhetorical contribution of an utterance to a discourse or dialogue. On this model, intonation indirectly contributes to the determination of the discourse function of an utterance.

Abstract:
The purpose of this work is to investigate how processes of inference are reflected in the grammar of the natural language. I consider a range of phenomena which call for a representational theory of mind and thought. These constructions display a certain regularity in their truth conditions, but the regularity does not extend to closure under arbitrary logical entailment. I develop a logic that allows me to speak formally about classes of inferences. This logic is then applied to analysis of indirect speech, belief reports, evidentials (with special attention to Bulgarian) and clarity assertions.

The master thesis is called Indirect Speech Acts in series Vyprávěj and according to the title, it refers to indirect speech acts in the particular Czech series. The master thesis is based on Speech Act Theory by J. Austin, P. Grice and R. Searle. The most interesting thing on this issue is that words themselves are not so important as the meaning and intention which are hidden behind them. The master thesis would like to prove that indirect speech act is a part of illocution, the aim of a speaker in making an utterance, and stands hierarchical higher than a direct speech act.

Abstract:
The subject of this dissertation is an analysis of the use of verbal tenses in Czech subordinate clauses. This analysis is based on the notions of relative and absolute tenses and on the distinction between content and adjunct clauses. We test the hypothesis about the connection of relative and absolute tense with the type of a subordinated clause (content and adjunct) and propose a revised version of the views presented in Czech grammars, monographs and articles based on a detailed analysis of the data from the Czech National Corpus. The syntactic and semantic criteria for the classification of dependent clauses into content and adjunct classes are studied together with the conditions for the application of relative or absolute tense. The great amount of data exploited from the Czech National Corpus support the idea that beside the expected forms of tense (relative in content clauses, absolute in adjunct clauses) there exists some shifting of the presupposed forms of verbal tenses. The explanation of these shifts is presented in this dissertation as a new contribution to the study of the interplay between Czech morphology and syntax. Key Words: subordinate content clause, relative tense, absolute tense, factual predicate, indirect speech

This research has as a theoretical framework the Linguistics Pragmatic or the study of the Language in Use, that is, the study of the language in operation. Based on the constitution and delimitation of an oral corpus of interviews with migrants descended from Madeira Island people, visiting, or returning to Madeira, we analyze the aspects of development of rhetorical-pragmatic competence, that enable the understanding the discursive coconstruction between two intermediary (such as the adjacent question-answer pairs), interpretation and production of Indirect Speech Acts (such as speech acts of request), the summoning of other voices into the interior of the speeches (polyphony) and, in general, all the phenomena that concerns the realization of Politeness, which are present in these interviews. These interviews are material for the outline of an action research course, aimed to a student’s group, speakers of Portuguese Heritage Language. The interview is our leitmotif both for linguistic analysis and for the architecture of the route outlined for developing the Portuguese Heritage Language.

The development of a speed sensorless indirect field-oriented (IFO) induction motor drive fed by a soft-switching inverter is studied in this dissertation. The zero-voltage transition (ZVT) technique is employed to reduce the switching losses and voltage stresses of inverter switches. The proposed soft-switching inverter is formed from the traditional pulse width modulated (PWM) inverter by simply augmenting with auxiliary resonant circuits, and the soft switching is achieved through applying PWM switching control signals with suitable delays for the main and auxiliary switches. No additional voltage and current sensors are required in implementation. In the development of the proposed soft-switching inverter, the circuit operations and derivations of governing equations in various modes are described in detail. And accordingly, the circuit design procedure is derived. Next, an improved speed estimator via parameter uncertainty cancellation and its application to the IFO induction motor drive are presented. The speed estimation errors of a V-I model based adaptive speed observer due to motor parameter variations are analyzed. Then a novel compensation scheme is developed to cancel the effects of parameter variations on the speed estimation performance. The variable structure system (VSS) controller with the detected estimation error signal as its input is employed to realize the proposed compensation scheme. As to the development of high-performance speed controllers, a proportional plus integral-derivative (PI-D) two-degrees-of-freedom controller (2DOFC) is first designed for an ideal IFO induction motor drive at nominal case to meet the desired speed responses. In addition to the tracking and regulation speed control specifications, the effects of command change rate as well as control effort are also considered in the proposed design procedure. As the variations of motor drive parameters occur, the control performance of the detuned IFO induction motor drive will be greatly degraded. A compensation signal is yielded by the proposed fuzzy robust controller (FRC) to preserve the prescribed responses. In the generation of compensation signal, the compromise between the control effort and the performance is considered through a varying weighting factor, which is tuned by a fuzzy controller. Finally, the system dead-time of motor drive using estimated speed as feedback signal will be significantly enlarged, and this may significantly affect the closed-loop operating stability. Thus the fuzzy robust speed controller design for the sensorless IFO motor drive considering the effect of dead-time is further presented. The validities of all the proposed circuits and controllers are verified by some simulation and measured results.

In this thesis I chose the topic of the history of modern Italian literature, namely the period of neorealism. Literary production exceeds its framework and passes into another kind of art, into filmmaking. So thesis gains interdisciplinary character. Furthermore, for me, this period significant for its ethical and aesthetic values of the human society. The first part summarizes important books about the life of Pier Paolo Pasolini. In the central part is based on mutual comparison works, novels and films, the opinions of experts works drawn from secondary literature. It is currently the focus of work: analysis of novels and film sequences through which it speaks to us. In the last part of the thesis contents Pasolini's book dedicated to collection of essays bearing his poetic intention to intervene in language, literature and film layers of Italian culture.
Pasolini's scope goes beyond individual disciplines, interconnects arts and beyond "mere" national scope. It opens up new issues in the community in which he later become fateful. The thesis is dedicated to the first half of Pasolini's life that affected him during processing works analyzed below: Ragazzi di vita and Una vita violenta, Accattone and Mamma Roma. In this thesis, we will derive the maximum power transfer theorem at first. Then, a nonlinear indirect adaptive sensorless speed tracking controller for induction motor subjects to the maximum power transfer is proposed. In this controller, only the stator currents are assumed to be measurable. The rotor flux and speed observers are designed to relax the need of flux and speed measurement. Besides, the rotor resistance estimator is also designed to cope with the shifting problem of the rotor resistance. Stability analysis based on Lyapunov theory is also performed to guarantee that the controller design here is stable. Also, the computer simulations and experiments are done to demonstrate the performance of our design and maximum power transfer.

In this paper, speed sensorless indirect-field-oriented control of inductionmotor drive with rotor resistance adaptation is presented. Several field-oriented induction motor drive methods without rotational transducershave been proposed. These methods have a disadvantage that the rotor resistance variation causes estimation error of the motor speed. Therefore, simultaneous estimation of the motor speed and the rotor resistance is required. First, this paper presents a method of estimating simultaneously and independently the motor speed and the rotor time-constant of an induction motor based on theory of model reference adaptive system (MRAS). Next, we incorporate our estimators intothe VSS speed controller proposed. Finally, the validity and feasibility of the proposed method is verified by simulation and experimental results.
