This study proposed that evaluative situations influence individual performance by raising concerns about self-and social-evaluations. When an individual performs a task, the individual's performance may be subject to two types of evaluation: self-evaluation and evaluation by others. Often, the basis of evaluation is the performance of others, i.e., social comparison. In such cases, an individual may increase performance to protect self-and social-esteem. Further, the individual's sensitivity to esteem threats, as measured by identity orientation, may moderate the performance increase. This st

We used fMRI to explore the neural substrates involved in the unconscious evaluation of Black and White social groups. Specifically, we focused on the amygdala, a subcortical structure known to play a role in emotional learning and evaluation. In Experiment 1, White American subjects observed faces of unfamiliar Black and White males. The strength of amygdala activation to Black-versus-White faces was correlated with two indirect (unconscious) measures of race evaluation (Implicit Association Test [IAT] and potentiated startle), but not with the direct (conscious) expression of race attitudes.

AbstractThis paper compares two different deep-learning architectures for the use in energy disaggregation and Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring. Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring breaks down the aggregated energy consumption into individual appliance consumptions, thus detecting device operation. In detail, the “One versus All” approach, where one deep neural network per appliance is trained, and the “Multi-Output” approach, where the number of output nodes is equal to the number of appliances, are compared to each other. Evaluation is done on a state-of-the-art baseline system using standard performance measures and a set of publicly available datasets out of the REDD database.

Abstract:

Modern civil engineering mega-projects dealing with buildings, bridges, and infrastructures take sustainable engineering into consideration for the development and execution of their proj-ects. Since sustainable development and sustainable engineering are rather broadly covered as global issues, each individual needs to take personal responsibility for environmental, social, and economic questions whose performance outcomes may impact the life cycle of the struc-ture. An integration concept on sustainable engineering will deal with emerging criteria and concept for a strategic approach to the planning, execution, operation, and maintenance phase of the building process. It can be shown that approaches to and strategies for these issues result from individual consciousness, national policies, and global actions. Current research has been conducted on the sustainability perspective of areas such as global climate changes, CO2 levels, life-cycle assessment (LCA), green design rating, emerging trends in sustainable engineering, and sustainability monitoring and evaluation criteria. However, there may still be more areas requiring further research to apply an integrated concept to emerging strategies for building a process to achieve the goals. Then the methods and procedures appropriate for each community or society can be explored. However, a quantifying performance method also needs to be used as a measure to guarantee satisfactory findings.

Abstract:
AbstractMachine elements produced in large quantities undergo several development cycles and can be adapted from generation to generation. Thus, experiences from real operation can be taken into account in further development. This is not possible for innovative investment goods such as special purpose machines, as these are usually individual items. Therefore, functionality and quality of newly developed components must be assured by previous investigations.Conventional methods are inadequate at this point, as they cannot represent the actual, complex operating conditions in the later application. A reliable statement about the behavior of the system through a comprehensive validation in laboratory tests under standardized conditions is not achievable in this way due to a multitude of diversified load cases. In previous work, a method was developed to allow testing of machine elements in the laboratory under detuned operating conditions. For this purpose, disturbance variables are applied to the system using paraffin wax phase change actuators in order to simulate real operation states and to analyze the behavior of the machine element under these conditions. The investigated disturbance variables are fluctuations and asymmetries of the operating load through superimposed temperature gradients. Complex interactions between the machine element and the adjacent components or the overall system can thus be taken into account. The functionality of the methodology has been developed and briefly demonstrated so far. This paper presents the next level within the development process of the methodology. The necessary components are explained in detail and an AI black box evaluation tool is discussed. This work is based on a test bench that applies dynamically changing states of detuning under superimposed disturbances. Additionally, energy efficiency and performance of the test setup is advanced. As presented, the method opens up the possibility of validating new machine elements in the laboratory under realistic conditions.

Abstract:
AbstractTo validate the predictive capability of ERA Acute, a study was carried out using data from two well-studied historic oil spills, the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill (EVOS) and the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill (DHOS) incidents. Results from the case studies with ERA Acute were compared to the impact estimates and recovery observations that have been reported in the extensive research following the two incidents. Resource data relevant for each of the two incidents were reconstructed within the analysis area. Performance boundaries were set up for evaluating the ERA Acute results, based on the ranges of the impact and recovery estimates reported in the post-spill assessments. Validation of an oil spill ERA model against post-spill assessments of historic spills is a challenging exercise due to scientific limitations of both. ERA Acute performed satisfactorily compared to the performance boundaries and the study gave useful insight into the predictive capabilities of ERA Acute. The results from the study were used to evaluate between two different impact models and to increase the individual vulnerability of cetaceans.

Abstract:
Thermography has found a broad range of applications in equine sport and veterinary medicine. Thermographic diagnosis is useful in monitoring changes of horse surface temperature resulting from exercise allowing evaluation of the work of individual parts of the body in racing performance. Regular assessment of body surface temperature allows the detection of training overloads and identification of pathological conditions of the musculoskeletal system during the racing training cycle. The usefulness of thermography in veterinary medicine has been proved in detecting pathological conditions associated mainly with inflammation processes of the distal parts of the limbs and back. The main advantage of thermography is the detection of subclinical signs of inflammation before the onset of clinical signs of pathology, providing great value in veterinary medicine diagnosis. Thermography has also found application in detecting illegal performance procedures to improve horse performance and in assessing the saddle fit to the horse's back.

Emergency Relief (ER) is a Department of Social Services (DSS) funded program, delivered by 197 community organisations (ER Providers) across Australia, to assist people facing a financial crisis with financial/material aid and referrals to other support programs. ER has been playing this important role in Australian communities since 1979. Without ER, more people living in Australia who experience a financial crisis might face further harm such as crippling debt or homelessness.
