Soputan volcano is one of the few basaltic volcanoes among 127 active volcanoes in Indonesia. It is part of the Sempu-Soputan volcanic complex located south of Tondano Caldera, North Sulawesi and commonly produces both explosive eruptions with VEI 2-3 and effusive lava dome and flow eruptions. Over the last two decades, Soputan had thirteen eruptions, the most recent in 2016. Most eruptions started explosively, followed by dome growth and in some cases pyroclastic flows. Our study focuses on understanding the magmatic system of Soputan and what processes are responsible for its highly explosiv

Sulawesi is an archaeologically important region in the Wallacea zone of Island Southeast Asia, as it lies on one of the proposed migration routes for human dispersals into New Guinea and Australia. Such a route would have required water crossings, as the island has always remained geographically isolated, yet ancient artefacts show that at least two hominin species reached Sulawesi during the Pleistocene era. By the Late Pleistocene, humans were painting what is now some of the oldest securely-dated parietal rock art in the world, in the limestone karst region of Maros and Pangkep in South Su

Brackish water aquaculture is one of the largest coastal industries in Indonesia. This farming system involves the construction of ponds m coastal sediments. Many ponds in Indonesia have been abandoned due to past development of ponds in acid 8ulfate soils (ASS); these soils produce sulfuric acid through the oxidation of pyrite du ring and after the sediments have been excavated. The soils also contain elevated concentrations of metal such as iron and aluminium which are harmful to farmed fish and shrimp. Abstract:
The political transition in May 1998 set the stage for the passing of Indonesia's framework decentralisation laws (numbers 22 and 25 of 1999). These laws include both political and technocratic efforts to devolve authority from the centre (Jakarta) to the peripheries. Contrary to expectations, enhanced public participation often takes the form of indigenous (adat) revivalism, a highly contested and contingent process linked to intensified political struggles and conflicts throughout the archipelago. Another aspect of this paradox is the belief that local communities possess traditional knowledge that respects nature.
