Two successive inductions specify blastomere identities, that is complex cell lineages and not specific tissues, in a major part of the early C. elegans embryo. The first induction acts along the anterior-posterior axis of the embryo and the second along the left-right axis. During the first induction a specific lineage program is induced in the posterior of the two AB blastomeres present in the four cell embryo. During the second induction, almost all of the left-right differences of the embryo are specified by interactions between a single signalling blastomere, MS, and the AB blastomeres th

Induction of Mt1 mRNA does not depend on protein synthesis, and correlates with oxidation–reduction functions of the antioxidants. In the present study, we analysed the biochemical pathway of the induction. Induction depends on the presence of MTF-1 (metal-activated transcription factor 1), a transcription factor that is required for metal-induced transcription of Mt1, but does not require nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2, a tBHQ-act

The claim is that an inductive argument is one where the premises are intended to make the conclusion likely. This contrasts with a deductive argument, where the premises are intended to entail the conclusion. However, since entailing is one way of making more likely, a further way to distinguish induction is needed. The addition offered is that the premises are not intended to entail the conclusion. Abstract:
Abstract Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) is a potent immunomodulatory molecule that promotes inflammation through recruitment of monocytes and induction of IL-1 and other cytokines. These proinflammatory processes may be modulated by the ability of TGF-beta to induce de novo synthesis and secretion of an IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) that binds to and blocks IL-1 receptors. In this study, we show that the addition of TGF-beta to human peripheral blood monocytes induced the sequential transcription of the 1.8-kb mRNA for IL-1 beta and for IL-1ra. The expression of detectable mRNA

Abstract:
Abstract T cell activation is widely believed to depend on interleukin 1 (IL 1) provided by antigen (Ag)-presenting cells (APC). Because IL 1 is not a constitutive product of APC, we examined the features of its production during the interaction of murine T cell clones and APC. We observed that IL 1 was detectable in supernatants of most myoglobin-specific T cell clones grown with APC and Ag. Two of these T cell clones induced exceptionally high levels of IL 1 in their supernatants, and these same clones demonstrated the unusual restriction to I-Ek, which is a low responder type for sperm whal
