Abstract:
This thesis contains eight chapters, dealing with machine analysis and representation. A definition and a brief survey of previous investigation devoted to shaded-pole motors and the application of finite element method for solving the two-dimensional electromagnetic field is given in Chapter 1. An outline of the present investigation is also given. In Chapter 2, the experimental requirements and details of the equipment are given. This includes the techniques of recording the transient torque patterns and the method of measuring the complete torque-speed characteristics. The experimental methods for parameters determination are also mentioned. The finite element method is outlined in Chapter 3. This chapter deals also with the assumptions made, the formulation of the non-linear energy function, the solution of Poisson's equation and an example of a simple shape contianing 16 elements for illustrating the method. In Chapter 4, the computer program for the finite element is outlined. The iteration process and the numerical representation of the magnetization curve are mentioned. Application of the finite element method to the shaded-pole motor is also given. Calculation of parameters by finite element technique is given in Chapter 5. Self inductance is calculated using the concept of stored energy and the results of self and mutual inductances are tabulated. Basic performance equations of an electrical machine are derived in Chapter 6. Solution of the basic performance equations, by a step-by-step numerical method, is also given. In Chapter 7, the steady state performance equations are established in terms of harmonic currents and inductance coefficients. The flux linkages are evaluated by the approximated functions of mutual inductances. The electromagnetic torque is calculated from the stored energy in the magentic field. General conclusions and suggestion for further work are mentioned in Chapter 8.

Abstract:
In this study, three different programs are developed for the analysis of the three-phase induction motor, single-phase capacitor type induction motor and switched reluctance motor. The programs are developed by using Pascal and C++ programming languages. In the performance calculations of motors, analytical methods are used and these methods are tested for accuracy. These programs have also capabilities to design an optimum motor, which meets a set of performance, material and manufacturing constraints while minimizing the weight or any other defined objective function. In addition, in this study, an optimization tool is used to obtain an appropriate optimization method for the design of different types of motors. The software is tested over different commercial motors. The results illustrates that the performance calculations and optimization approach of the programs lead to good results.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis has been to convert two softwares called TPCAD (Three Phase Induction Machine Computer Aided Desing) and SPCAD (Single Phase Induction Machine Computer Aided Design) developed earlier for the design and analysis of three and single phase induction machines to meet the needs of motor manufacturing industry so that they can be run in windows environment. Furthermore, it was aimed to include features such as double cage motor analysis and design, to provide a facility designed motor lamination can be drawn for the user to see and facilitate sharing the designed lamination with other professional programs such as finite element analysis or thermal analysis etc. As a result of this study, a user friendly design tool facilitating the design process of induction motors has been upgraded by using C++ Microsoft Visual Studio .Net programming language. TPCAD and SPCAD are tested with different commercial motors. The results show that the full load performance calculations are within the range of 5% error for both programs. However, starting performance calculation errors are within 10% for TPCAD, and 8% for SPCAD.

Initially, a mathematical model of the motor will be derived. The motor equations will be transformed to the stationary reference frame so that the angular dependency due to the asymmetry of the motor variables is eliminated. Then is discussed that single-phase induction motor can be viewed as a two-phase system. A mathematical model to derive the motor parameters is presented. The next step is to analyze the rotor flux vector control, pointing out the need for a symmetry transformation of the motor parameters. Two control methods are presented: direct rotor flux control and indirect rotor flux control. Theses control methods are validated through numerical simulations. Abstract:
A major residential application of single-phase induction motors is in domestic refrigeration. The development of more efficient motors, associated with speed control, has made that, among the most diverse types of electrical motors, the permanent magnet synchronous machine becomes an object of study for a design, construction and testing methodology. Therefore, to suit the PMSM design to replace the single phase induction motor, studies were made on how to take advantage of existing laminations, through definitions of the basic characteristics of the stator and rotor. The permanent magnet used was defined mainly as a function of the cost of the material and its magnetic properties since they suit the design requirements. PMSM magnetic design was made to maximize the magnetic flow in the slots considering the constructive characteristics and the magnet curve. The electric design, starting from a motor equivalent circuit, allowed to explain torque, current and voltage of the PMSM motor, as well as the definition of the motor windings regarding their filling in the slots, the calculation of coil number and the wire diameter as a function of the area allowed by the stator lamination slot. With the information obtained after the PMSM motor calculation, a prototype construction was initiated consisting of the stator, rotor and a support system to allow determining the motor parameters. The required parameters were defined taking into account the need the designer had of an electronic drive had. This data was used in computational simulations to determine the electronic driver design. After this, the motor testing allowed to identify the parameters, namely: winding resistance and inductance, various speed curves versus phase to phase and line voltage for back emf´s, moment of inertia and viscous friction, thus completing this work proposal, finalizing the project methodology for PMSM motor.

The objective is to present an alternative for variable speed single-phase motor drives for residencial applications, which operate mostly with constant speed. For contextualization in the actual scenario, firstly a bibliographic review about variable speed operation of single-phase induction motors is presented. After, the mathematical model that represents the single-phase induction motor dynamic behavior is developed, and following, the model validation to obtain the electrical parameters is done with classical experimental tests. Then, a field orientation technique applied to single-phase induction motors is presented, where a new mathematical model is developed for the application of this technique in this motor. Also, this work proposes a method of single-phase induction motors rotor speed estimation using an MRAS (Model Reference Adaptive System) algorithm, based on the calculation of the motor s reactive power. So, some simulation results are presented for the validation of the proposed estimation technique. The speed controller used is a discrete PI because the simplicity of its implementation. Two discrete PI s controllers are used for current control. Finally, experimental results obtained in a computer based environment are presented to validate the proposed techniques with and without rotor speed sensor.<br>Este trabalho propõe um controle de velocidade sensorless aplicado a motores de indução monofásicos.

Master thesis deals with design and construction of the most widely used engines currently. Overall, it is divided into five chapters, the first chapter deals with constructional features of various three-phase asynchronous motors, the second chapter briefly paid attention to single-phase motors. The next chapter focuses on the specific engine types, which differ from standard induction motors in its design implementation. This is an engine with full rotor, hysteresis, linear and with shaded field. Although asynchronous motors are considered the most reliable machines work in imperfect conditions, it leads to frequent breakdowns. This is covered in chapter four. Based on the findings from previous chapters the fifth chapter includes a preliminary draft of the asynchronous motor with a full rotor. The last chapter is devoted to the measurement on functional models.

The development of control schemes to control fractional power electrical machines such as the single-phase induction motor has been in evidence due to the needs of improvements on efficiency energy demanded by the market. The constructive aspects of this motor does not allow to apply control schemes directly. Thus, it is necessary to model the single-phase induction motor as a two-phase motor. The model considers coordinates transformations to stationary systems. To fix the asymmetry of the motor windings, a symmetry transformation is required to apply the control schemes. Classical control schemes based on field-oriented control and direct torque control were evaluated. Numerical simulations were performed to review how these control schemes work and to verify the feasibility of experimental implementation. For control schemes based on field-oriented control, the rotor flux oriented control and the stator flux oriented control were evaluated. Some constraints on the classical direct torque control were noted due to the high switching frequencies. An alternative to the classical direct torque control to allow constant switching frequencies was evaluated.

Abstract:

The single phase induction motor needs two stator windings to produce the rotating magnetic field: a main winding and an auxiliary winding. The aim of the auxiliary winding is to create the rotating electromagnetic field when the machine is starting and afterwards turned off, generally through a centrifugal switch coupled to the shaft of the machine. The main purpose of this work is to evaluate the influence that the position of the two windings have on the external characteristics of the single phase induction motor. For this purpose, two different kinds of winding configurations were carried out and simulated in a prototype. In the first configuration, the main winding was located in the bottom of the slot. In the second configuration, the positions of the windings were inverted. Performance analysis and computational simulation by Finite Element Method were carried out after the prototype 0.37 kW, four poles was prepared. In this way, through this analysis, improvements on its performance are expected. The electrical quantities such as flux density, electric current, torque, power and efficiency are compared in the end of this document.

Abstract:
Much interest is shown nowadays in the use of variable-speed ac motor drives in applications which previously have been the domain of the de motor supplied from a controlled rectifier or chopper. This interest is due mainly to improvements in semiconductor switching technology and the consequent increased reliability of the de-link inverter, together with the cost-effectiveness and the long-term reliability of ac machines, especially squirrel-cage induction motors. This thesis presents a recently developed form of variable-speed ac motor drive, comprising a 2-phase induction motor fed by a 2-phase inverter. A detailed mathematical model for the drive is developed and this is used to predict the dynamic and steady-state performance of a 300W experimental arrangement under various operating conditions and for both square-wave and sinusoidal PWM modes of operation. The validity and accuracy of the model are confirmed by the close agreement obtained in both shape and value between the experimental and predicted results. The harmonic content of the drive waveforms and the levels of torque and speed pulsations resulting from the inverter supply for both the square-wave and PWM modes of operation are evaluated, and the effects of load-torque and operating frequency variations on the drive performance are also considered. It is concluded in the thesis that this drive arrangement offers the advantages of relative simplicity, high reliability and little maintenance, and can provide a reasonably good performance and efficiency over a wide speed range. Consequently, it is a viable alternative for many variable-speed drive applications.

Abstract:
The research conducted at the department of Electrical Engineering of the University of South Florida campus in Tampa only covers the electrical aspect of electric drives. However, the performance of electric machinery is significantly impacted by temperature variation. The literature review shows three main control techniques in use today in electric drives namely, Scalar control, Direct Torque control and Field Oriented control. This thesis presents a temperature rise of rotor bars, stator winding, stator core and stator frame in a running three phase field-oriented controlled induction machine. A literature search shows that none of research has been carried out to investigate a thermal response of a field-oriented controlled induction motor. With this motivation, we were able to implement a lumped parameters thermal model of a three-phase field-oriented IM in MATLAB Simulink, which allows us to determine that rotor bars have the highest temperatures rising to 84 degrees Celsius. This confirms that rotors bars are the hottest part of a running IM as stipulated in literature.

Abstract:
<p>There are various methods for speed control of induction motors. This paper specifically describes one of the methods: speed control using variable frequency. The proposed system is a MATLAB simulink model, which is a closed loop model designed to achieve desired speed control of a three-phase induction motor by varying its frequency. The simulink model has four main blocks, namely the inverter, synchronous machine, proportional integral control and current hysteresis control. For accuracy of output results and simplicity, we have used dq to abc transformation block and sin function block. The inverter is comprised of six integrated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs), which are fired by gate pulses generated by current hysteresis control block. The inverter generates variable frequency and variable voltage output, which is given to motor terminals. The project presents the working principle of variable frequency drive (VFD), its performance, and the use of Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) in a three-phase inverter to control the frequency and thus the speed. The proposed method conformed to performance predictions and delivered the desired outputs.

The experimental results are compared with the simulated results obtained from both FLUX2D and q-d axis model to validate the performance of the studied machine under different operating conditions. In SPSEIG mode, both eigenvalue and eigenvalue sensitivity techniques are employed to determine required minimum excitation capacitance. The steady-state equivalent-circuit of a SPSEIG is used to obtain the relationship between main-winding current and magnetizing reactance. Abstract:
A relatively new development in the electric machines field has been the written-pole technology, of which the latest product is the large single-phase electric motor, the single phase Written-Pole Motor (WPM). The WPM is a synchronous, permanent-magnet single-phase motor having a weak rotor cage for start-up which in addition exhibits significant hysteresis effects at speeds below or above true synchronism. The electrical configuration of the WPM places it in the capacitor-start capacitor-run category of single-phase motors, due to the large size and need for an approximation of a round rather than elliptic rotating magnetic field. This thesis presents the results of the research conducted by the author in the Motor Systems Resource Facility (MSRF) of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Oregon State University. The thesis is structured into two main parts: Testing and Modeling. The tests conducted on the WPM were trying to independently verify manufacturer's claims with regards to efficiency, power factor, robustness, power-outage ride-through and furthermore to study the behaviour of the machine during voltage sags, overvoltages and undervoltages. Tests were conducting in order to develop a mathematical model from which the performance of the machine can be predicted. The modeling efforts were concentrated in the development of a comprehensive model which would include all three major aspects of the WPM, and the performance of the resulting model was compared with the sampled data.<br>Graduation date: 1999

Therefore, the variable-frequency method to diminish speed was developed in field application. The main advantages of this method can reduce the noise of the gear box and increase the reliability. However the single phase induction motor can not maintain original starting torque under variable-frequency. In this thesis, the optimum capacitance was evaluated based on the double revolving-field theory ( DRFT ).And, up-voltage that does not influence the current specification of the machine are used to promote starting torque at low frequency. Simulation results indicate that the starting torque of variable- frequency method is higher than that of nominal frequency. The operation requirement of low speed and high starting torque is also conformed.

The main purpose of this paper is to design a DC injection braking system for a single –phase induction motor drive. First, the single phase induction was designed through finite element method. Simulation results, including flux lines, flux density and magnetic field distribution. The designed DC injection braking modules utilize Programmable logic controller, transformer, rectifier and magnetic contacts to switch the injected DC current into the motor windings. DC injection braking can provide the motor braking force during stop when AC power is removed from the motor. DC magnetic field introduced into the stator will create a powerful braking force on the spinning rotor. This DC injection current may be increased to provide more braking torque from the single induction motor. Experimental results show that the DC injection is an effective braking method for the single-phase induction motor can also be applicable in the case of the three -phase induction motor. So the running capacitor of permanent split-capacitor motor changes capacitance value, and the current also. But the efficiency is a non- positive correlation along with the capacitance value. Accordingly, selecting the proper running capacitor value and capacitance value of run capacity is a very important issue for single-phase induction motor’s efficiency. Abstract:
碩士<br>國立清華大學<br>電機工程學系<br>85<br>The major purpose of this thesis is to study the operating per- formance of a single-phase induction motor by switching controlling its auxiliary winding current. First, the governed equations, equi- valent circuits and steady-state operating characteristics of a single-phase induction motor are derived and simulated. Then accordingly, the intelligent switching control strategy is developed. In the proposed switching controlled single-phase induction motor, while the main winding is permenantly connected accross the AC grid, its auxiliary winding is fed by a current-controlled switching mode inverter. The phase of auxiliary winding current is kept in quadra- ture with those of main winding, but its magnitude is independently controlled by the current- controlled inverter. At starting, within the current ratings of system components, the starting torque can be directly controlled to meet the load requirements. On the other hand, the magnitude of auxiliary winding current is regulated toward the condition of minimum input power at running case using the pro- posed intelligent switching controller. Although the actual ampere- turn balanced can not be achieved simultaneously at this condition, the pulsating torque is neglighly small and thus the mechanical run- ning characteristic can also be improved. For further improving the line drawn current quality, a power factor correction switching con- troller, which is located at the ac source side, is also implemented in the thesis. Through which, the line drawn curent is regulated to be low-distorted, and the power factor is much improved. The proposed switching-controlled single- phase induction motor has the adventages that the starting and running capacitors, the centrifugal switch and the motor parameters are not needed. The overall performance improve- ment of the single-phase induction motor via the proposed controlled stratgies are demonstrated experimentally.

Abstract:
abstract: This thesis presents a new technique to develop an air-conditioner (A/C) compressor single phase induction motor model for use in an electro-magnetic transient program (EMTP) simulation tool. The method developed also has the capability to represent multiple units of the component in a specific three-phase distribution feeder and investigate the phenomenon of fault-induced delayed voltage recovery (FIDVR) and the cause of motor stalling. The system of differential equations representing the single phase induction motor model is developed and formulated. Implicit backward Euler method is applied to numerically integrate the stator currents that are to be drawn from the electric network. The angular position dependency of the rotor shaft is retained in the inductance matrix associated with the model to accurately capture the dynamics of the motor loads. The equivalent circuit of the new model is interfaced with the electric network in the EMTP. The dynamic response of the motor when subjected to faults at different points on voltage waveform has been studied using the EMTP simulator. The mechanism and the impacts of motor stalling need to be explored with multiple units of the detailed model connected to a realistic three-phase distribution system. The model developed can be utilized to assess and improve the product design of compressor motors by air-conditioner manufacturers. Another critical application of the model would be to examine the impacts of asymmetric transmission faults on distribution systems to investigate and develop mitigation measures for the FIDVR problem.<br>Dissertation/Thesis<br>M.S.
