Inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP/OES) has become the primary tool of analytical atomic spectrometry over the past two decades.1 The success of the ICP may be largely attributed to a torch design which permits a droplet spray from a sample solution to be injected along the axis of the plasma, and from the ability of the plasma to evaporate the solvent, dissociate most chemical species, and render highly excited populations of free atoms and atomic ions. However, LIBS is still regarded as the less accurate technique in comparison with LA-ICP-OES or -MS, because the analytical data are strongly dependent on the parameters of the laser produ

The elemental characterization of pozzolanic materials is crucial because it affects the reactivity of cementitious fluids and thus the overall efficiency of a cementing job. This study investigates the elemental analysis correlation between inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry techniques using machine learnin

ABSTRACT: In this comparative study, we analyzed the changes in elemental concentrations of hydraulic fracturing fluids after interaction with the Marcellus and Caney Shale formations. The focus was on assessing the inherent risks and environmental implications associated with flowback waters, including their impact on soil, ground, and drinking water quality, and human health safety. The chemical compositions of effluents were determined through Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and Mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The Marcellus Shale, showed concentrations of Cd,

Abstract Numerous well operations, including water injection, varying stimulation approaches, and enhanced oil recovery (EOR) techniques are implemented during the production period in order to maintain the longevity of hydrocarbon production. However, reservoir formation, production, and injection facilities are often impacted by these treatments. Well operations induce inorganic scale to form near-wellbore regions and in various production and injection structures. Consequently, the deposition of scales hinders assessing an optimum hydrocarbon production as their precipitation on formation,

Abstract:
Handheld laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an emerging analytical technique that shows the potential to replace X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRFS) in the field characterization of soils containing heavy metals. This study explored the accuracy and precision of handheld LIBS for analyzing soils containing copper and zinc to support LIBS as a re-placement for XRFS technology in situ. Success was defined by handheld LIBS results that could be replicated across field analyzers and verified by inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). A total of 108 soil s

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a rapid, low-cost analytical method with potential applications for quantitative analysis of soils for heavy metal contaminants found in military ranges. The Department of Defense (DoD), Army, and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have mission requirements to acquire the ability to detect and identify chemicals of concern in the field. The quantitative potential of a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hand-held LIBS device and a classic laboratory bench-top LIBS system was examined by measuring heavy metals (antimony, tungsten, iron, lead, and zi

Abstract:
Regional-scale lake sediment surveys have been successfully used since the 1970s as a means for reconnaissance geochemical exploration. Lake sediment sampling is typically performed in areas with a lack of streams and an overabundance of small-sized (=5 km across) lakes. Lake sediments are known to have major, minor and trace element concentrations that reflect the local geology. Overall, lake sediment surveys are planned and conducted following four distinct stages: 1) background research, 2) orientation survey, 3) regional survey, and 4) detailed survey.
