With the rapid growth in the wireless industry there has been increasing demand to make devices with better performance. This means lower power, lower voltage, smaller, and in general more efficient. This has lead to the interest in and necessity for good quality passive components. Good quality passive components make better filters, baluns, voltage controlled oscillators, and matching networks. There has been a lot of work over the last ten years focused on improving the quality of inductors. Typical inductors fabricated on silicon have Q factors of approximately 10.

This thesis reports on a new implementation of high quality factor (Q) copper (Cu) inductors on CMOS-grade (10-20ohm.cm) silicon (Si) substrates using a fully CMOS-compatible process. A low-temperature (less than300C) fabrication sequence is employed to reduce the loss of Si wafers at RF frequencies by trenching the Si substrate. The high aspect-ratio (30:1) trenches are subsequently bridged over or refilled with a low-loss material to close the open areas and to create a rigid low-loss island (Trenched Si Island) on which the inductors can be fabricated. Presented in this work is a novel design technique for a low-phase-noise high-frequency CMOS voltage-controlled oscillator. Phase noise is generated from electrical noise near DC, the oscillation frequency, and its harmonics. In CMOS technology, low-frequency flicker noise dominates the close-in phase noise of the VCO. The proposed technique minimizes the VCO phase noise by seeking to eliminate the effect of flicker noise on the phase noise. This is accomplished by canceling out the DC component of the impulse sensitivity function (ISF) corresponding to each flicker-noise source, thus prev

Improvement of the quality factor (Q-factor) of inductors is important issue. Since the Q-factor is the main determine that the loss of the metal strip and substrate, much research has been devoted to improve the Q-factor by reducing the metal or substrate loss. In this work, by reducing the metal loss improved the Q-factor.We will make use of an analytical formula is developed to efficiently determine the line width in th

碩士
國立臺灣大學
電子工程學研究所
94
There are three topics in this thesis. The first topic is the flip-chip transition measurement up to millimeter wave frequency. The second is the design of performance improved inductors in the LTCC substrate. The last is the capacitor and coupled inductor with high process tolerance in the multilayer structure. The characteristics of the conventional flip-chip are studied and obtained by the simulation. Its narrowband and wideband improvements are simulated and presented. Then we propose two measurement methods to extract the property of the flip-chip up to m
