Abstract:
Industrial Attachment was a key imperative for instructors who train in technical disciplines. Student attachment had been practised for several decades. However, teaching staffs‘ industrial attachment (TSIA) was a novel idea in developing countries. TSIA could improve the learning environment for competence-based training and assessment (CBTA). Akin to in-service training, TSIA would boost the abilities of staffs in determining relevant content materials; provide linkages with industries on-the-job training and use of appropriate pedagogical strategies for graduates‘ competitive-edge in the world of work. Competent human capital development in the current technological trends would encourage creative innovations for rapid industrialization desired in Kenya. Shortage of creative innovations among technical and vocational graduates which was associated with instructional challenges had persisted. However, reviewed literature focused on research and publicaions, instructors‘ in-service training (INSET), further education, social and industrial partners‘ participation in developing curriculum among other strategies for improving students‘ performance in curriculum based examinations. Although TSIA could encourage creative innovation and catalyze rapid industrialization, it had not been fully exploited. Yet, graduates‘ lack of creative innovations had persisted. The purpose of this study was to establish the influence of industrial attachment on instructors‘ and students‘ competence in creative innovations for improved industrial output. The objective of the study was to determine the influence of TSIA activities on the quality of students‘ industrial output in Kenya. The study found that TSIA played an important role in establishing a link with socio-industrial partners, relating teaching and learning processes to the latest development opportunities in for the industries, providing working with most current technology, machinery, equipment, tools and systems, contributing to product and industrial processes through creative innovations, involvement of industrial staff in students‘ competence development, reducing cost of recruitment and hence improving industrial savings. The study concluded that if collaborative industrial attachment between instructors and students was practised, the result was improved students‘ competence in creative innovations leading to globally competitive industrial output. The study recommended involvement of industrial and social partners in standardized assessment of collaborative supervised industrial attachment for students and academic staff.

Abstract:
Abstract The topic of the article concerns the issue of place attachment and its determinants. An analysis of place attachment was performed in terms of place identity and place dependence (Williams, Vaske, 2003). Moreover, links between place attachment and selected geographical (size and type of place, geographical region), demographic (age, sex) and psychological (satisfaction with life) variables were investigated. The study group included 759 respondents: 398 women and 361 men, aged 18-83 years, residing in 74 places in the Silesian Province, a region in Poland: in 10 sub-regions in the Upper Silesian conurbation and outside the conurbation. The study used the Place Attachment Scale (Williams, Vaske, 2003), the Satisfaction with Life Scale (Diener, Emmons, Larsen, Griffin, 1985) and a personal information section containing questions regarding place of permanent residence, sex and age. Results showed that subjects residing in smaller and non-industrial places had a stronger place attachment than those residing in larger and industrial cities. People living outside the Upper Silesian conurbation were more strongly attached to their place of residence in terms of place identity than those residing in the Upper Silesian conurbation. People living in the Zagłębie (industrial) sub-region were more strongly attached in terms of place dependence than those residing in the Bytom sub-region (devastated with high unemployment). Satisfaction with life was positively correlated with place attachment. Older subjects were more strongly attached to their place of residence. Men and women did not differ in the sense of place attachment and life satisfaction.

Abstract:
In this study, the relationship was investigated between attachment avoidance and attachment anxiety on the one hand, and job search intention, job search self-efficacy, job search self-esteem, and job search attitude on the other hand. Our sample consisted of 180 employees from an international industrial organization in the Netherlands. Results showed that attachment avoidance had a larger impact on the job search process than attachment anxiety. More avoidantly attached people had lower job search intentions, lower job search self-efficacy, and more negative job search attitudes. Attachment avoidance had an effect on job search intentions through job search self-efficacy and job search attitude but not through job search self-esteem. Attachment anxiety had no effect on job search intention through job search self-efficacy, job search self-esteem, and job search attitude. Attachment style is discussed as individual characteristic that impacts the job search process.

Abstract:
Assessment of the Industrial Attachment Programme was deemed incomplete without reviewing measures of academic performance, efficiency, and the factors that affect performance and efficiency. The factors forming the basis for this review were found to human and system oriented. Academic performance of students has to be measured using examinations, tests, assignments and exercises. Data Envelope Analysis and Stochastic Frontier Analyst were the efficiency measures reviewed. Data Envelope Analysis was regarded appropriate for this study considering its ability to handle multiple inputs and outputs. Data Envelope Analysis estimates allocative, technical and economic efficiency which are key efficient measures. Some of the factors reviewed include financing, timing, evaluation and assessment methods of the programme. Linkage among students, tertiary education institutions, host organizations and various stake holders were other key factors. Courses covered before Industrial Attachment were noted as other key factors since the programme intends to marry theory learnt in the classroom with the practice. Industrial Attachment in Zimbabwe as with the Agricultural colleges and other institutions of tertiary education was also reviewed. The institutions use different approaches which will help much in the assessment of the programme. Measurement of performance and efficiency levels were found to be done with primary and secondary schools making reference to the academic side and not much was found to be done with agricultural colleges and the industrial attachment programme thereby forming the basis for this study. Colleges have to adopt models which improve performance and efficiency of the programme.

Abstract:
Tissue engineering has studied the combination of diverse biomaterials with cells in order to overcome some limitations of traditional therapies. One of solutions is related with the development of microstructures, microgels, that mimic the extracellular matrix and can assemble to create a complex three-dimensional structure. This work reviews the microfabrication techniques that been used to fabricate these microstructures as well as the main application of these in tissue engineering. One of this technique, microfluidic flow-focusing has been used to produce laminarin microparticles. This polymer was chemical modified, by adding methacrylated groups that allowed the photopolymerization of laminarin droplets when exposed to UV light. This technology allows to encapsulate human platelet lysates during fabrication of microgels by microfluidic. The microparticles shows high monodisperse and spherical shape with an average diameter around 326.6 μm in the microparticles with high degree of modification and 303.3 μm in the microparticles with low degree of modifications. The release studies demonstrate that different levels of modification of the laminarin microparticles allow to obtain different encapsulated proteins release profiles. At the end of 14 days the high methacrylated laminarin released 56.89 ± 1.03% of total amount of protein while low methacrylated laminarin released 35.31 ± 2.73%. The results showed that RGD functionalized particles with encapsulated platelet lysates allow an efficient cell adhesion and expansion. The cells cultured on the surface of microgels promote the assembly in three dimensional structures. For clinical applications, injectable/moldable hydrogels are several times necessaries to fill defects of irregular geometries. This highly versatility microgels can be translated in the development of the highperformance systems to production of injectable systems for applications in tissue engineering

Dabkowski, Matthew Francis. "Using Network Science to Estimate the Cost of Architectural Growth." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/612431.

Full text
Abstract:
Between 1997 and 2009, 47 major defense acquisition programs experienced cost overruns of at least 15% or 30% over their current or original baseline estimates, respectively (GAO, 2011, p. 1). Known formally as a Nunn-McCurdy breach (GAO, 2011, p. 1), the reasons for this excessive growth are myriad, although nearly 70% of the cases identified engineering and design issues as a contributing factor (GAO, 2011, p. 5). Accordingly, Congress legislatively acknowledged the need for change in 2009 with the passage of the Weapon Systems Acquisition Reform Act (WSARA, 2009), which mandated additional rigor and accountability in early life cycle (or Pre-Milestone A) cost estimation. Consistent with this effort, the Department of Defense has recently required more system specification earlier in the life cycle, notably the submission of detailed architectural models, and this has created opportunities for new approaches. In this dissertation, I describe my effort to transform one such model (or view), namely the SV-3, into computational knowledge that can be leveraged in Pre-Milestone A cost estimation and risk analysis. The principal contribution of my work is Algorithm 3-a novel, network science-based method for estimating the cost of unforeseen architectural growth in defense programs. Specifically, using number theory, network science, simulation, and statistical analysis, I simultaneously find the best fitting probability mass functions and strengths of preferential attachment for an incoming subsystem's interfaces, and I apply blockmodeling to find the SV-3's globally optimal macrostructure. Leveraging these inputs, I use Monte Carlo simulation and the Constructive Systems Engineering Cost Model to estimate the systems engineering effort required to connect a new subsystem to the existing architecture. This effort is chronicled by the five articles given in Appendices A through C, and it is summarized in Chapter 2.In addition to Algorithm 3, there are several important, tangential outcomes of this work, including: an explicit connection between Model Based System Engineering and parametric cost modeling, a general procedure for organizations to improve the measurement reliability of their early life cycle cost estimates, and several exact and heuristic methods for the blockmodeling of one-, two-, and mixed-mode networks. More generally, this research highlights the benefits of applying network science to systems engineering, and it reinforces the value of viewing architectural models as computational objects.

Abstract:
Universities in Zimbabwe have universally adopted a full-year integrated undergraduate student workplace-based learning pedagogy following the precedent set in 1991 by one pioneering university, the National University of Science and Technology. In this explorative study I analyse participants’ views, reflections and understanding of how the full-year model of workplace-based learning enhances quality academic practices and impacts on short, medium and long-term visions and opportunities for students and other stakeholders. I employed the embedded concurrent mixed methods research design (Creswell&Clark, 2007) using interviews with lecturers, university administrators and industry supervisors, as well as open-ended questions in three matched versions of a questionnaire to students, lecturers and industry supervisors respectively. The same questionnaire provided quantitative data that was statistically analysed. Interviews were conducted with 24 participants from the university under study, industry and other universities, while 363 university students, 40 NUST lecturers and 34 industry supervisors responded to the respective questionnaires. Students, lecturers and industry supervisors concurred on the coherence between industry experiences and university learning, the beneficial experiences at the workplace, and the relevance of those experiences to society, confirming the expressed view that industry-based learning promoted quality learning and teaching, and enabled students to become work-ready. However there were perceptions of inadequate student supervision and assessment, unsatisfactory student welfare safeguards, inadequate research enthusiasm among lecturers, and the lack of involvement of the whole spectrum of industry categories. There was an underlying regard for lifelong learning enabling societal transformation into the increasingly dominant industrialised culture. Lecturers indicated an appreciation for a holistic orientation to teaching and learning (Taylor, 2009), and were inclined towards adopting the hermeneutic approach to education (Danner, 2002). It is recommended, among other things, to revitalise effective practices through staff development efforts, increasing student knowledge and empowerment, and strengthening collaborative platforms between the university and its industry partners. Chief among the suggestions for future research is the understanding and promotion of student welfare during their placement in the workplaces.

Rizzo, Francesco. "Computational characterization of carbazole-benzonitrile derivatives for applications in Organic Light Emitting Diodes." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2020. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/21022/.

Full text
Abstract:
The technology of Organic Light-Emitting Diodes has reached such a high level of reliability that it can be used in various applications. The required light emission efficiency can be achieved by transforming the triplet excitons into singlet states through Reverse InterSystem Crossing (RISC), which is the main process of a general mechanism called thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). In this thesis, we theoretically analyzed two carbazole-benzonitrile (donor-acceptor) derivatives, 2,5-di(9H-carbazol-9-yl)benzonitrile (p-2CzBN) and 2,3,4,5,6-penta(9H-carbazol-9-yl)benzonitrile (5CzBN), and addressed the problem of how donor-acceptor (D-A) or donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) flexible molecular architectures influence the nature of the excited states and the emission intensity. Furthermore, we analyzed the RISC rates as a function of the conformation of the carbazole lateral groups, considering the first electronic states, S0, S1, T1 and T2, involved in TADF process. The two prototype molecules, p-2CzBN and 5CzBN, have a similar energy gap between the first singlet and triplet states (∆EST, a key parameter in the RISC rate), but different TADF performances. Therefore, other parameters must be considered to explain their different behavior. The oscillator strength of p-2CzBN, never tested as emitter in OLEDs, is similar to that of 5CzBN, which is an active TADF molecule. We also note that the presence of a second T2 triplet state, lower in energy than S1 only in 5CzBN, and the reorganization energies, associated with RISC processes involving T1 and T2, are important factors in differentiating the rates in p-2CzBN and 5CzBN. For p-2CzBN, the RISC rate from T2 to S1 is surprisingly higher than that from T1 to S1, in disagreement with El-Sayed rules, due to a large reorganization energy associated to the T1 to S1, process; while the contrary occurs for 5CzBN. These insights are important for designing new TADF emitters based on the benzo-carbazole architecture.

Abstract:

Peter Drucker once said: Innovation or Die. In the era of network technology innovation, the wave of financial technology is about to sweep across industries and every consumer’s life. The wide applications of FinTech will save consumers a lot of time on consumption and transactions with a more smooth and convenient financial service experience, by streamlining unnecessary processes and operations in the financial industry. While technology development has impacted the previous consumption pattern , the financial industry has to deal with the problem of human resources adjustment with the challenge brought by the FinTech. In a highly uncertain working environment, it will be a great challenge for today's financial practitioners to make self-adjustment and transformation. Therefore, the connection between environmental dynamics perception and industrial emotional attachment has led to the interest and motivation of this study. This research is based on the study of the relationship between the environmental dynamics perception, the industrial emotional attachment, and the interfering factors of the seniority and position, among the subjects of the Financial practitioners working in the Greater Taipei area. A total of 266 questionnaires were collected through questionnaire survey. The SPSS statistical software package is used as a tool for data analysis, and then tested by descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, hierarchical regression analysis, analysis of variance (ANOVA) , and Independent Sample t test. The main empirical results are as follows: 1. Environmental dynamics perception has a positive relationship with employees' industry emotional attachment. 2. Employee industry emotional attachment will have significantly differences due to different seniority. 3. Employee industry emotional attachment will be significantly different due to the position of the position. 4. The seniority will interfere with the relationship between environmental dynamics perception and industrial emotional attachment. The finding of this study can make recommendations to the financial industry as a reference for human resources management, and provides relevant recommendations for follow-up researchers.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the merger of Harold Gibbons's union with the Teamsters in 1949 as well as his teamup with Ernest Calloway to develop new strategies for cementing member attachment to the union and boosting its standing as an advocate for working-class interests in St. Louis. The chapter first considers the factors that influenced Gibbons's decision to merge with the Teamsters and describes the merger as his boldest response to the changed circumstances he and the St. Louis warehouse workers now faced. It then discusses the strategies employed by the Teamsters in an attempt to improve the conditions and living standards of St. Louis workers, including strikes and secondary boycotts. It also looks at the increase in Teamsters' membership between 1933 and 1941, Gibbons's commitment to the pursuit of racial justice, and the challenges he and Calloway would encounter in trying to gain member support for total person unionism and sustaining the sense of organizational attachment they had witnessed within the mine workers and the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO).

Abstract:
Smart connected industrial products and the Internet of Things (IoT) are transforming the industrial business landscape in a radical way. To reach the full potential of IoT-technologies manufacturing firms are forced to rethink almost every aspect of their value creation process. To utilize this promising digital technology and to cope with the new market conditions of IoT environments, research shows that industrial firms have to make a fundamental shift in value creation logic and break free from the value chain perspective of business. Instead they have to embrace a view where value is co-created within ecosystems in both a vertical and a horizontal manner. By exploring the value creation logic of small and medium sized (SME) Swedish industrial machinery manufacturers, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of how manufacturing firms view their value creation processes and how aligned this logic is to the latest research in IoT. The study found that Swedish industrial machine manufacturers do understand the transformative force of IoT-technologies and see great business opportunities to utilize IoT in their business. The study, however, identified a lack of co-creation and difficulties in embracing an ecosystem perspective. While quick to embrace change on a technical level, respondents still adhere to a firm-centric and linear perspective of value creation, with a strong attachment to the value chain concept. The study suggests that it is not a lack of technical proficiency or engineering know-how, but rather an adherence to goods-dominant logic and attachment to the value chain concept that prevent Swedish SME manufacturers from fully embracing the growing market of industrial IoT. Hence, we see an urgent need for both practitioners and academia to shift their attention from the dazzling potential of cutting-edge technologies to the nitty-gritty business of incorporating co-creation and ecosystem-thinking into current business practices.

Abstract:
Latches are essential mechanical elements used to controllably connect multiple bodies throughout industry. Latches conventionally attach bodies at a single point or at a few discrete points, and are designed for multiple operation cycles. Actuator controlled latches, minimize the amount of complexity and costs involved with installation and removal by making the attachment between structures controllable, tool-free and fast. However, the use of multiple single point fasteners carries additional part count, material costs, and labor associated with installation and removal, and can creating load concentrations at attachment sites. Alternatively, surface attachments, such as traditional hook and loop mechanisms, distribute structural connection over an area or across many points reducing stress concentrations, allowing engagement of multiple bodies, maintaining structural connections in nonspecific locations and orientations and reducing labor costs to install and detach bodies. However, performance limitations of conventional surface attachments, such as low retention force, restrict potential applications. An active distributed attachment technique has the potential to increase the performance of conventional distributed attachments, as well as overcome the complexity and operation of conventional point attachments. This paper introduces three active distributed latch approaches (Pegboard, Interlocking Teeth, and Active Velcro) that utilize lightweight, compact SMA actuation. Proof-of-concept prototypes were built, and tested experimentally to investigate the engagement, retention, and release performance. The best performing of the three is demonstrated in a full application scale. The first generation prototypes improved upon the performance of conventional surface attachments and show promise in maintaining the necessary structural attachment for industrial applications.

Abstract:
A non-destructive method was used to determine the effects of thermal cycling on the thermal performance of a PCB attached to an aluminum substrate with a thermal adhesive. This method allows for a comparison of the thermal performance of various TIMs in an industrial application. Testing was done on FR4 and Flex boards, both with and without overmolding, attached using PSA and an alternative adhesive. Baseline measurements were taken, then the boards were cycled from −40 to 125°C on a 90-minute cycle with 15-minute dwells at the target temperatures. It was found that both adhesives showed an increase in thermal conductivity, possibly due to curing, and delamination occurred at 17 out of 35 locations with the alternative adhesive within the first 1000 cycles while no delamination occurred with the PSA.
