New world challenges increasingly require designers to solve social problems of humanity, so designers are entrusted with increasingly complex and impressive tasks. However, the modern system of design education does not always prepare students for these tasks. This article analyses how the educational process of training designers in European countries is built.
The realities of the development of industrial design in Spain and Ukraine are given, with an immersion in the historical prerequisites for the formation of this field of activity. The development of industrial design in countries is demonstrated, taking into account historical, economic and political prerequisites. The training programs were considered and the content of the training of industrial design engineers in Spain and the content of the training of industrial design specialists in Ukraine were compared. In the process of studying the training programs, significant differences in the understanding of the field of activity and the content of the training of industrial designers in Ukraine and Spain were revealed. This fact is reflected in the demand of students to study in the relevant training programs.
In order to demonstrate the shortage of industrial design engineers in the production sector of industry, the labour market requirements for these specialists in Ukraine are given. According to the results of the analysis, the inconsistency of the training content of industrial designers with the requirements of the labour market was demonstrated both at the legislative level and at the level of employers’ requirements
In order to meet the needs of industry and bring Ukrainian education to European requirements, it is proposed to introduce a new interdisciplinary educational program for training engineers in industrial design in Ukraine, taking into account the experience of the Spanish School of Industrial Design, which has incorporated the best English and European practices.
It should contain two main focuses of training: engineering and aesthetics. At the same time, business awareness and environmental awareness when making decisions should become a mandatory component of the training of industrial design engineers.

The development of the sustainability concept began primarily in the European continent. Its integration into lifestyles and with it, the increase of social awareness, were formed with the contributions of various NGOs. In this context, we see the contribution of integrating sustainable design principles into the academic program. The factors that are important in sustainable design such as lower usage of raw materials, environmentally friendly materials, convenience in production and assembly, energy consumption, and ease of recycling are conveyed to the students through various courses in the academic program. A case study was carried out to analyze the transfer of sustainable design principles to the education process and its implications. This research was carried out in three stages: creating a theoretical framework, fieldwork, and practical work with students who attended the Sustainable Design course. According to the results students create new designs before recycling waste products within the scope of repurposing concept. The purpose of this Community Service (PkM) program is to solve the problems faced by MSMEs for home-based industrial food products in Ciwaruga Village, Parongpong District, West Bandung Regency through assistance in the process of developing product packaging designs produced by MSMEs. Justification for priority issues was developed by optimizing potential through community empowerment through Community Service program support to increase awareness of packaging through surveys of packaging importance, development of appropriate technology and development of marketing networks to increase the competitiveness of MSME home-cooked food products in Ciwaruga Village. The design design of the problem solution implementation method begins with coordination with the Village Head and the Ciwaruga Village Secretary. The output that will be produced from the Community Service program is Appropriate technology, in the form of packaging design/design and a high level of understanding about the importance of packaging through packaging development training.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to build an awareness-centered information security policy (ISP) compliance model, asserting that awareness is the key to ISP compliance and that awareness depends upon several variables that influence successful ISP compliance. Design/methodology/approach The authors built a model with seven constructs, i.e., leadership, trusting beliefs, information security issues awareness (ISIA), ISP awareness, understanding resource vulnerability, self-efficacy (SE) and intention to comply. Seven hypotheses were stated. A sample of 285 non-management employees was used from various organizations in the USA. The authors used path modeling to analyze the data. Findings The findings indicated that IS awareness depends on effective organizational leadership and elevated employees’ trusting beliefs. The understanding of resource vulnerability (URV) and SE are influenced by IS awareness resulting from effective leadership and elevated employees’ trusting beliefs which guide employees to comply with ISP requirements. Practical implications Practical implications were aimed at organizations embracing an awareness-centered information security compliance program to secure organizations’ assets against threats by implementing various security education and training awareness programs. Originality/value This paper asserts that awareness is central to ISP compliance. Leadership and trusting beliefs variables play significant roles in the information security awareness which in turn positively affect employees’ URV and SE variables leading employees to comply with the ISP requirements.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe a project intended for the implementation of a formal cradle to grave management program for hauled or trucked industrial wastewater in Jordan. Design/methodology/approach – Industries that do not have treatment onsite or that treat their industrial wastewater to a level not suitable for disposal into sewers or those that do not have access to sewer system have to haul their industrial wastewater to a treatment or disposal facility. At present most industries haul their industrial wastewater to a solid waste landfill site specially designated to receive industrial wastewater. In the program presented here, a manifest system for these industries have been introduced and implemented in a number of pilot projects. Findings – A manifest form has been devised and used in a number of pilot demonstrations that enabled the formulation of specific conclusions and recommendations. Before implementing this manifest a program that includes training, awareness, governmental enforcement and commitment, and upgrading of disposal sites and laboratories capabilities has to be implemented. Originality/value – Management of hauled industrial wastewater is very important in a water poor country like Jordan. The introduction of a manifest system and the identification of the problems associated with its implementation are key issues for sustainable development in Jordan.

The craft design industry refers to tangible and intangible industries and contents that create economic added value by embodying cultural and artistic elements. It has been developed based on the traditional culture of the country and region. This study aims to suggest ways to create cultural values and revitalize local communities by utilizing these craft design activities. Currently, local communities have undergone rapid industrialization and urbanization due to rapid economic development and rapid growth, and these are expressed as urban environmental problems such as changes in social structure, reduction of exchange, and absence of community activities. In particular, after COVID-19, the concept of community has declined, and life centered on social relations is changing. Therefore, this study analyzes prior research on the operating system of the Crafts Center, which operates craft design programs, and presents a systematic activation plan focusing on the support direction and operation program. This is significant in contributing to the improvement of the quality of life of isolated or unstable local members while playing a role in raising awareness of the cultural industry through craft design and expanding the network of local communities.

Cybersecurity is a multifaceted global phenomenon representing complex socio-technical challenges for governments and private sectors. With technology constantly evolving, the types and numbers of cyberattacks affect different users in different ways. The majority of recorded cyberattacks can be traced to human errors. Despite being both knowledge- and environment-dependent, studies show that increasing users’ cybersecurity awareness is found to be one of the most effective protective approaches. However, the intangible nature, socio-technical dependencies, constant technological evolutions, and ambiguous impact make it challenging to offer comprehensive strategies for better communicating and combatting cyberattacks. Research in the industrial sector focused on creating institutional proprietary risk-aware cultures. In contrast, in academia, where cybersecurity awareness should be at the core of an academic institution’s mission to ensure all graduates are equipped with the skills to combat cyberattacks, most of the research focused on understanding students’ attitudes and behaviors after infusing cybersecurity awareness topics into some courses in a program. This work proposes a conceptual Cybersecurity Awareness Framework to guide the implementation of systems to improve the cybersecurity awareness of graduates in any academic institution. This framework comprises constituents designed to continuously improve the development, integration, delivery, and assessment of cybersecurity knowledge into the curriculum of a university across different disciplines and majors; this framework would thus lead to a better awareness among all university graduates, the future workforce. This framework may be adjusted to serve as a blueprint that, once adjusted by academic institutions to accommodate their missions, guides institutions in developing or amending their policies and procedures for the design and assessment of cybersecurity awareness.

AbstractStreet children and community members of Pedongkelan—Pulogadung—have been showing poor moral, social, and legal awareness in their daily lives. It therefore requires in-depth study and sustainable follow-up measures in a bid to alleviate poverty, empower the street children’s potentials, and tackle all sorts of other related problems, which originate in their poor economic capacity referring to their low sense of achievement, poor skills, and poor knowledge. The underlying issues on this matter lie in how to formulate strategies to address community empowerment in a bid to improve quality life of the street children and other community members where they live in Pedongkelan and how to orchestrate the roles of the academic people and the respective bureaucrats to join forces with their respective constituents. This research uses a normative method, with sociological approach, to endorse the proposed PRA (Participatory Rural Appraisal) implementation. The findings suggest (1) that the most appropriate empowerment programs for the street children and other community members in Pedongkelan are through the implementation of science and technology programs, the implementation of character building programs, the implementation of potential economic building programs on the religious basis, the implementation of economic stability programs, and the promotion of legal awareness programs. In doing so, it is important to make opportunities available, conduct serious and sustainable sectorial programs, design specific programs to curb the number of street children, poor people, and thugs or criminals, implement integrated and gradual programs, have psychosocial approach for target groups, and improve the target group’s productive skills and their skills in giving added value to their products. All of these should be supported by (2) the government’s role, academic people, and related institutions. The subject of the stated research is conditioned by the need to develop modern methods and technologies of information support of the tourism industry of the regional profile taking into account its specifics and features. Awareness and comfortable conditions of tourist service are the key factors of successful promotion and sustainable development of this sphere. In the near future, domestic tourism has great prospects, it concerns many territories of the country, and the Southern Urals is no exception. The article is a continuation of research work related to the collection and analysis of geodata, as well as the visualization of the information environment. This study shows how to graphically visualize information on the basis of the development of an interactive scheme project with the possibility of overlaying it on a scalable satellite map in the field of industrial, scientific-cognitive tourism and architectural tourism on the example of a separate layer "Country of Cities" for the objects located in the South Urals. In the research on the basis of the program utility "Grid cartogram of reference archaeological objects" the design concept of the interface functionality of utility "KROT-1.0" ("Cartogram of reference objects of tourism. Version 1.0") is developed and tested as an interactive cartogram on Internet platforms. Methodology wise, the research process consists of 2 stages: pre-project or data collection with the formation of a database catalog and design and research, with the implementation of results, consisting in the development of the design concept of the utility and its integration with a web resource developed on the platform of non-commercial CMS; analysis and comparison of the results obtained on different platforms, publication or placement of the developed interactive schemes on internal servers and Internet platforms with further prospects for the development of mobile applications for the provision of information environment in different spheres of regional tourism.

The method section of a thesis is crucial because it conveys the information upon which the study's validity is ultimately evaluated. The method section describes the procedure, instruments, design, data acquisition, and data analysis, among other components. Students may encounter several obstacles when composing a thesis, including the rhetorical issue. This study examines the rhetorical structure of the methodology section of a graduate thesis. This investigation employed a fundamental content analysis with quantitative methodology. The data was collected from 50 English education postgraduate theses at the University of Bengkulu. The results indicate that five Moves occurred in the thesis with varying frequencies. Moves 2, 3, and 4 occur most frequently, followed by Move 5, with Move 1 occurring least frequently. Furthermore, this research presents fifteen communicative purposes as Steps. 2 Steps are Obligatory (M2S1 and M3S2), 5 Steps are Conventional (M2S2, M2S3, M3S3, M4S1, M4S2), 7 Steps are Optional (M1S1, M3S1, M4S3, M5S2, M5S3, M5S4, M5S5), and 1 Step is non-obvious (M5S1). In conclusion, this study provides information about the rhetorical structure of the method sections of a thesis in order to heighten students' awareness of the significance of the three Obligatory movements in the method section. Students can use the framework or model presented in this study to present important information and construct a strong argument in the methodology section.

Today, organizations are generating large volumes of data. However, the challenge of extracting valuable information from the data has been a large and long-standing problem. Here, we address the problem of quantifying risks and detecting fraud in heterogeneous financial big data. Great financial losses are pressuring institutions to devise innovative solutions for risk and fraud detection. Current approaches in government suffer from issues such as high false positive rates and low adaptability to the continuous evolution of newer fraud. In this thesis, we propose an open and extensible framework called "Situational Awarness FrAamework for RIsk ranking" (SAFARI). SAFARI aims to quantify and rank risk with unlabeled, complex data in the financial world. The framework integrates and analyzes different perspectives of financial data, and extends risk scores for decision makers. SAFARI also utilizes machine learning techniques to learn from examined cases to improve the calculation of risks and adapt to the changing behavior of fraudulent activities. The work includes designing, implementing, testing, extending and evaluating the proposed framework. In the overpayment detection scenario, results show SAFARI can effectively find overpayments with low false positive rates. Furthermore, SAFARI can be extended to assist decision making in a variety of environment thanks to its general applicability.

Why are some industrial design firms more successful than others in consistently producing high quality products and services? Do they hire more talented people, or are they organized so as to maximize the potential of their teams? I begin this thesis with an examination of literature on teamwork, the dynamics of idea propagation, and the product development process itself. This is meant to extract some insights into successful teams across a broad spectrum of activities and what they did to generate a creative output. These examples include references to historically significant teams such as Thomas Edison's Lab and the Manhattan Project. By using such extreme examples, I am seeking similarities in more common projects and organizations. I use a workgroup framework to analyze the factors involved, including the context, the people on the teams, their task requirements and formal organization, group cultures that emerge, as well as the outcomes that define the success, or otherwise of a project. I interviewed a number of professionals in the industry. These include professionals from IDEO, Design Continuum, Modo, and sevenO2design, as well as professors at the MIT School of Engineering, Media Lab, Sloan School, and Olin College of Engineering. The main focus is in analyzing the collaborative processes and methods of these sample organizations. My objective is to identify their methodology for organizing the creative process and how they maintain a high standard across projects, industries and over time.

Introduction: The amount of information available nowadays is staggering and increases exponentially. Making sense of this data has become increasingly difficult because of the two factors: · The sheer volume of data · The lack of interoperability between disparate data sources and models While one can do little about the former factor, the latter one can be mitigated by advancing solutions that make data easy to work with and ensure the interoperability among data sources and models in intelligent networks. One way to achieve interoperability is to force every entity involved in the data exchange to adopt the same standard. However, organizations have heavily invested in proprietary data standards and are unlikely to replace their existing standards with a new one. Therefore, another solution is to create a standard, through which organizations can translate their data sources and share them with their customers or general community. The MIT Data Center is spearheading an initiative to create M - a language that is capable to provide the much needed interoperability between divergent data sources and models with an ultimate goal of creating a new intelligent information infrastructure (Brock, Schuster and Kutz 2006).

American manufacturing is experiencing a modest renaissance. U.S. firms are choosing to re-shore manufacturing jobs not out of their sense of patriotism, but because it makes good business sense. The costs of transportation and overseas labor are increasing, opening the door for domestic production. Political leaders are embracing the prospects for skilled, living wage jobs; President Obama has made manufacturing one of the central tenets of his economic recovery plan. This has important implications for cities, which stand to benefit from new investment and increased employment opportunities. However, important questions linger for planners: where will manufacturing jobs materialize within the urban fabric? Are factories even viable within the core cities of industrial regions, where there is the greatest need? If so, what physical planning strategies should those cities be pursuing in order to retain, attract, and increase the number of manufacturing jobs within their borders? This research begins with a history of urban production, from the Industrial Revolution through the present day. Emerging trends are assessed and synthesized into a new model for urban industrial development. That model is tested with a detailed examination of Louisville, Kentucky, a place that embodies the renewed efforts to re-industrialize cities with a manufacturing past. Urban manufacturing typologies are presented that describe the urban forms in Louisville at large, and within the Park Hill industrial corridor in particular. A unified set of design principles is presented and matched to the urban manufacturing typologies, focusing on verticality, mixed uses, transparency, sustainability, connectivity, and adaptability. Finally, the thesis concludes with an assessment of the most pressing challenges and opportunities facing the implementation of the Neo-Industrial City model.

AbstractAerospace production systems face increasing requirements for flexibility and reconfiguration, along with considerations of cost, utilisation, and efficiency. This drives a need for systems with a small number of automation platforms (e.g. industrial robots) that can make use of a larger number of end effectors that are potentially flexible or multifunctional. This leads to the challenge of ensuring that the configuration and location of each end effector is tracked by the system at all times, even in the face of manual adjustments, to ensure that the correct processes are applied to the product at the right time. We present a solution based on a Data Distribution Service that provides the system with full awareness of the context of its automation platforms and end effectors. The solution is grounded with an example use case from WingLIFT, a research programme led by a large aerospace manufacturer. The WingLIFT project in which this solution was developed builds on the adaptive systems approach from the Evolvable Assembly Systems project, with focus on extending and increasing the aerospace industrial applicability of plug and produce techniques. The design of this software solution is described from multiple perspectives, and accompanied by details of a physical demonstration cell that is in the process of being commissioned.

Abstract Research has shown that lack of non-technical skills (also called, Crew Resource Management – CRM) contributes to most personal and process safety incidents in high-risk industries. Situational awareness in the most influential non-technical skill. Authors developed a disruptive program to generate situational awareness competencies and improve non-technical skills of front-line employees. The program is called: Permanent Attention. It combines best practices adapted from high-risk industries and industrial psychology science to generate statistically significant improvements in situational awareness competencies through a sustainable approach. The paper shows real case applications from two organizations where the Permanent Attention program has generated significant improvement in the participants’ situational awareness competency and non-technical skills (CRM) acquisition and retention. The program is executed with the learner at the centre of the process. The Situation Awareness Global Assessment Technique (SAGAT, Endsley, and Garland, 2000) is used to measure the levels of situational awareness competency before and after the training, to determine the impact achieved through the program. The ‘Repeated measures – ANOVA’ statistic model is used to scientifically demonstrate the significant impact of the process in the three elements of situational awareness: Attention, Comprehension and Anticipation. The training sessions in-between SAGATs contain theoretical information and practical exercises that equip the participant(s) with fundamentals. Exercises for each element of the situational awareness have been designed to obtain optimal skills. To complement the practice of non-technical skills, employees are exposed to simulations of critical operational situations, so they can demonstrate their leadership, communications, teamwork, decision-making skills in group and learn how to manage stress in such situations. The levels of situational awareness competencies are periodically monitored via practical field-based SAGAT exercises after the training, to ensure a sustained improvement in the participants’ competencies. The feedback provided immediately after each SAGAT is key to let the participant focus on the element(s) of situational awareness that require improvement. Once the feedback is received, the participant is requested to self-evaluate her level on each element of situational awareness. This reinforces self-consciousness and encourages a sense of commitment to improve by conviction, not by imposition. This novel methodology gives the organization a clear metric on the return on the investment the program offers and allows very specific interventions to improve individual and group level non-technical skills across the organization. A truly disruptive method. The paper shows how the Permanent Attention instructional design combines Endsley's research from the aviation and nuclear industries, with Knowles’ andragogy (2015) theory to achieve competency acquisition and retention. Novel approaches such as the SAGAT, are used with scenarios that are familiar to the target population. Participants’ levels of situational awareness competency are measured before and after the training to determine whether a statistically significant impact was achieved through the program. Permanent Attention has been implemented in organizations with a wide range of maturity. Case-studies are presented to illustrate the process, results, and limitations in two leading drilling companies, in which 60 to 70% of incidents had situational awareness as a contributing factor, over last five years. The implementation of the program has brought statistically significant improvements in the competency of employees and the pilot in Colombia has shown early signs of accident reduction.

The US-APWR, currently under Design Certification review by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, is a four loop evolutionary pressurized water reactor with a four train active safety system applied by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. The digital Instrumentation and Control (I&C) System and Human Systems Interface (HSI) system are to be applied to the US-APWR. This design is currently being applied to the latest Japanese PWR plant and to nuclear power plant I&C modernization program in Japan. The US-APWR digital I&C and HSI system (HSIS) utilizes computerized systems, including computer-based procedures and alarm prioritization, relying principally on an HSIS with soft controls, console based visual display units (VDUs) and a large, heads up, overview display panel. Conventional hard-wired controls are limited to system level manual actions and a Diverse Actuation System (DAS). The overall design philosophy of the US-APWR is based on the concept that operator performance will be enhanced through the integration of safety and non-safety display and control systems in a robust digital environment. This philosophy is augmented, for diversity, by the application of independent safety soft displays and controls. In addition, non-digital diverse automatic and manual actuation system is introduced. As with all the advanced designs, the digital systems open as many questions as they answer. To address these new questions, for an eight week period during the months of July and August 2008, an extensive verification and validation (V&V) program was completed with the objective of assessing US operators’ performance in this digital design environment. Subjective and objective data were collected on each crew for each scenario and an extensive convergent measures analysis was performed, resulting in the identification of both specific design as well as generic conclusions. This paper discusses the digital HSIS of the US-APWR design, the V&V program data collection and analysis, and the study results related to the ongoing discussion of the impacts of digital systems on human performance, such as workload, navigation, situation awareness, operator training and licensing.

This text deals with observations on the architectural interventions that the industrial heritage collection has been suffering in the Brazilian northeastern cities, through an analytical and critical eye. In specific case studies, two examples of interventions will be taken: the first is in one city of “Agreste” region of the state of Paraíba, Campina Grande, the old “Fábrica Marques de Almeida”; and the second is in the city of Recife, capital of Pernambuco - the old ”Fábrica da Macaxeira”, now a center of education and socio cultural and sports activities, that in contemporary times goes through a process of awareness and community outreach for your revitalization. Abstract Oil & Gas offshore platforms are industrial "towns", ranked among the most hazardous working environments. Emergency situations in such environments are unpredictable and characterized by time pressure and rapidly changing conditions. OffshoreMuster brings together the latest technological advancements in real-time personnel tracking and e-mustering, complementing the existing Health and Safety (HSE) procedures, by enabling situation awareness over personnel location and status which is a key factor supporting better decision-making towards zero casualty in emergency situations. The system's underlying technology, developed after years of dedicated research and development efforts, consists of specialised low-power wireless wearable devices, customised gateways and a secure backbone network infrastructure feeding a modular decision support software system with real-time streams of data for processing and visualisation of information relevant to personnel situation assessment. HSE processes have been transformed into systematic procedures, allowing additional computer-aided decision support features, like the real-time observation of the fire-fighting team response status, the concentration of people in specific areas, instant alerting or the last-known position of a missing person. Lightweight ubiquitous devices in the form of a bracelet or embedded in the uniform are assigned to People on Board (PoB) and periodically transmit real-time location and status awareness data. A network of dedicated gateways, which are placed at specific locations on the platform or vessel, connected through the infrastructure's ethernet or wireless network, relay the data to a central decision support system. Specialised localisation algorithms and data analytics tools process the data to estimate the personnel positions and PoB status information, interactively visualising in real-time location awareness, incident escalation and alerting, which can significantly reduce response time and speed up a safe evacuation procedure. Computer-aided decision support combined with ultra-low power autonomous IoT technologies systems play a significant role in controlling, managing, and preventing critical incidents in harsh working environments, contributing into minimisation of accidents occurrence in Oil & Gas environments. The presented underling technology has been validated in maritime environments with more than 500 people taking part in real drills (TRL-8). The technology has been tailored to enhance the safety of personnel working in offshore Oil & Gas assets, currently being under laboratory testing and evaluation while a full-scale industrial deployment is scheduled for the autumn of 2021. The OffshoreMuster hardware and software components, integrated into a unified solution tailored for the offshore Oil & Gas industry, are presented for the first time. The system has been designed and developed with the support of the European Commission, co-funded by the Fast Track to Innovation Program (Grant Agreement Number 878950).

Automotive industries are implementing high-end technology with minimalistic design and advancing rapidly. Tesla Model 3 is among those automobiles replaced physical knobs with fully functional touchscreen screens to enhance the minimal interior aesthetic. All the in-vehicle touchscreen interaction requires visual attention allocation between driving and touchscreen interaction resulting in drivers' divided attention posing a hazard or risk to the driver's safety. This research aims to assess the impact of the vertical grid design of the Tesla Model 3 infotainment system on visual search time while multitasking. For comparison, a horizontal grid design was prototyped to see the difference in visual search time between vertical and horizontal grid designs. Task success rate, the number of incorrect searches, reaction time for search, and subjective measures were considered to assess the dimension of efficiency and satisfaction. Eleven novice participants performed visual search tasks and answered follow-up questions based upon the task experience. Visual search task was designed using Psycho-Py and to collect real-time data Pavlovia.org online platform was used to run the experiment. Each trial in the visual search tasks starts with a red color fixation cross presented on a grey background lasting on-screen for 500 milliseconds. This fixation cross was followed by an on-road driving video that contains a question presented on the top-center of the video display. An image of the infotainment system appears at the bottom right corner of the screen at different time stamps lasting for 2 seconds. When a participant presses the right or left key based on the response, the video automatically terminates. This is followed by a two-response window, one after the other; the first response window where the participant must type the visual searched target answer asked during the video. In the second response window, the participant must typecast the total number of cars counted. A fixation cross appears again for 500 milliseconds indicating to participants that the subsequent trial will begin after this. After task completion, follow-up questions were asked. The purpose of asking follow-up questions was to understand the frustrations and difficulty experienced by the participants while searching target on the infotainment screen. A mixture of quantitative and qualitative data was gathered to assess the goals of efficiency and satisfaction. The result indicates that task success rate or target miss rate, and incorrect task response are high in the vertical grid design of the Tesla Model 3 infotainment system. Visual search time for vertical grid conditions was significantly higher than the NHTSA guideline. The results showed that the horizontal grid design strategy leads to a better target visual search user experience. The study concludes that the Tesla Model 3 infotainment system lacks discoverability, goal-based design, affordance, visual momentum, mode awareness, and consistency with the user's mental model. A robust design is required to achieve the crucial information search without leading the driver to a high risk of causing adverse consequences due to interface design. Increasing legislation and public awareness of noise are intensifying the efforts of industries today to reduce the noise. The natural gas industry has proved that it is one of the industrial leaders in its awareness of noise problems and has maintained a vigorous research program in noise control for over 30 years. A noise survey can be done in several ways: point measurements, grid point methods, contour methods, scanning techniques, etc. The selection of the method depends on the accuracy required, available personnel, expertise etc. For the most accurate determination of sound power, the scanning method using sound intensity measurements is considered to be the best available in present day circumstances. This method is discussed in detail in later chapters. Point and grid point measurements are useful to determine the Sound Pressure Level, but are of limited use in quantifying the Sound Power Level of a noise source in a complex and multi-source environment such as a compressor station. Guidelines for Sound Power Level Measurements for Compressor Station Equipment Report documents the development of guidelines for in-situ sound power level measurements for compressor station equipment, with sample calculations. Measurement of equipment noise levels in a complex, multi-source environment is very difficult and may be accomplished by several methods. These guidelines specify the sound intensity approach that can be used in almost any field situation. The sound power guidelines described in this report specify the sound intensity approach as the primary measurement method since it can be used in almost any field situation to determine the sound power of a source. In open spaces without reflecting surfaces (except the ground plane) sound pressure measurements may give satisfactory estimates of the sound power of noise sources if background noise is low and other sources can be turned off. Inside a compressor building, the modified reverberation room approach may be allowed, but then only the total sound power can be determined unless background sources can be controlled or other sources turned off. Lastly, the standard guidelines developed were used to conduct field measurements of the sound power of four equipment noise sources including: a) turbine casing, b) turbine air inlet, c) cooler and d) exhaust stack.

In this article we experimentally evaluate Colombias Think Equal program, which teaches socioemotional skills to children ages 3 to 6. Given the context of COVID-19, the original design was adapted as a hybrid model, alternating in-person and remote instruction and engaging families in the implementation of the curriculum. We found that the program had positive effects on childrens prosocial behavior, self-awareness, and cognitive learning. The intervention also had an impact on education centers personnel (community mothers) and caregivers implementing the activities. Treated community mothers had higher levels of empathy, lower negative health symptoms, better pedagogical practices, and a closer relationship with the childrens caregivers compared with those in the control group. Treated caregivers had better stimulation practices and lower negative health symptoms compared with those in the control group. These findings suggest that a well-designed intervention has the potential to develop socioemotional skills in children at an early age and, at the same time, to develop capacities in those who implement the activities. Our results have important implications for the design, implementation, and evaluation of early childhood socioemotional learning programs and provide novel evidence about the challenges faced by interventions combining face-to-face and remote learning.

In natural gas transmission pipelines systems, there is a growing awareness of contamination due to the presence of sulfur vapor in the gas stream at sub ppm levels. Particularly at pressure reduction facilities, the sulfur vapor can desublimate out as solid elemental sulfur and then combine with other particle matter and trace liquids in the gas stream to form the observed contamination deposits. In order to better control the formation of the elemental sulfur, an improved understanding of the contribution that the design of pressure regulators make to this desublimation process is required. This research program has come to the challenge of this requirement. In the conducted program, two pressure regulators were tested at a common facility that was known to have an elemental sulfur deposition problem. Each pressure regulator was alternatively placed in service so as each was subjected to, as near as possible, identical operating conditions. A requirement for the selection of the two pressure regulators was that they had to have different internal design features. The quality of the natural gas supply was regularly sampled and analyzed, with the contamination deposits on the pressure regulator internals sampled and analyzed at the termination of the test period. These deposits were analyzed for both hydrocarbon and other liquid deposits as well as a range of metal and semi-metal compounds captured in the deposits.

This document is a compilation of materials that at least appear to be reflective of one or more states’ views on international legal issues pertaining to the actual or possible use of algorithmic and data-reliant socio-technical systems in armed conflict. In September of 2018, the Harvard Law School Program on International Law and Armed Conflict (HLS PILAC) commenced a project titled “International Legal and Policy Dimensions of War Algorithms: Enduring and Emerging Concerns.”[1] The project builds on the program’s earlier research and policy initiative on war-algorithm accountability. A goal of the current project is to help strengthen international debate and inform policymaking on the ways that artificial intelligence and complex computer algorithms are transforming war, as well as how international legal and policy frameworks already govern, and might further regulate, the design, development, and use of those technologies. The project is financially supported by the Ethics and Governance of Artificial Intelligence Fund. In creating this compilation, HLS PILAC seeks in part to provide a resource through which the positions of states with divergent positions on certain matters potentially of international public concern can be identified. Legal aspects of war technologies are more complex than some governments, scholars, and advocates allow. In the view of HLS PILAC, knowledge of the legal issues requires awareness of the multiple standpoints from which these arguments are fashioned. An assumption underlying how we approach these inquiries is that an assessment concerning international law in this area ought to take into account the perspectives of as many states (in addition to other relevant actors) as possible.

The first phase of the incident analysis approach used the TapRoot methodology to chart the event sequence, identify contributing factors, including organizational practice failures, and identifying root causes of the organizational practice failures. The second phase of the analysis characterized the organizational failures as Common Failure Modes based on the HCS Effective Operations Practices and the specific expression of the root causes in terms of Common Root Cause Manifestations based on the Dirty Dozen human factors taxonomy. The Dirty Dozen taxonomy of human factors was found to have the potential to provide a tractable root cause framework for human and organizational factors. Specific limitations of the Dirty Dozen taxonomy as a HOF framework are discussed. Background Lung cancer is the number one cause of cancer death worldwide.(1) It is the fifth most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia (12,741 cases diagnosed in 2018) and the leading cause of cancer death.(2) The number of years of potential life lost to lung cancer in Australia is estimated to be 58,450, similar to that of colorectal and breast cancer combined.(3) While tobacco control strategies are most effective for disease prevention in the general population, early detection via low dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening in high-risk populations is a viable option for detecting asymptomatic disease in current (13%) and former (24%) Australian smokers.(4) The purpose of this Evidence Check review is to identify and analyse existing and emerging evidence for LDCT lung cancer screening in high-risk individuals to guide future program and policy planning. Evidence Check questions This review aimed to address the following questions: 1. What is the evidence for the effectiveness of lung cancer screening for higher-risk individuals? 2. What is the evidence of potential harms from lung cancer screening for higher-risk individuals? 3. What are the main components of recent major lung cancer screening programs or trials? 4. What is the cost-effectiveness of lung cancer screening programs (include studies of cost–utility)? Summary of methods The authors searched the peer-reviewed literature across three databases (MEDLINE, PsycINFO and Embase) for existing systematic reviews and original studies published between 1 January 2009 and 8 August 2019. Fifteen systematic reviews (of which 8 were contemporary) and 64 original publications met the inclusion criteria set across the four questions. Key findings Question 1: What is the evidence for the effectiveness of lung cancer screening for higher-risk individuals? There is sufficient evidence from systematic reviews and meta-analyses of combined (pooled) data from screening trials (of high-risk individuals) to indicate that LDCT examination is clinically effective in reducing lung cancer mortality. In 2011, the landmark National Lung Cancer Screening Trial (NLST, a large-scale randomised controlled trial [RCT] conducted in the US) reported a 20% (95% CI 6.8% – 26.7%; P=0.004) relative reduction in mortality among long-term heavy smokers over three rounds of annual screening. High-risk eligibility criteria was defined as people aged 55–74 years with a smoking history of ≥30 pack-years (years in which a smoker has consumed 20-plus cigarettes each day) and, for former smokers, ≥30 pack-years and have quit within the past 15 years.(5) All-cause mortality was reduced by 6.7% (95% CI, 1.2% – 13.6%; P=0.02). Initial data from the second landmark RCT, the NEderlands-Leuvens Longkanker Screenings ONderzoek (known as the NELSON trial), have found an even greater reduction of 26% (95% CI, 9% – 41%) in lung cancer mortality, with full trial results yet to be published.(6, 7) Pooled analyses, including several smaller-scale European LDCT screening trials insufficiently powered in their own right, collectively demonstrate a statistically significant reduction in lung cancer mortality (RR 0.82, 95% CI 0.73–0.91).(8) Despite the reduction in all-cause mortality found in the NLST, pooled analyses of seven trials found no statistically significant difference in all-cause mortality (RR 0.95, 95% CI 0.90–1.00).(8) However, cancer-specific mortality is currently the most relevant outcome in cancer screening trials. These seven trials demonstrated a significantly greater proportion of early stage cancers in LDCT groups compared with controls (RR 2.08, 95% CI 1.43–3.03). Thus, when considering results across mortality outcomes and early stage cancers diagnosed, LDCT screening is considered to be clinically effective. Question 2: What is the evidence of potential harms from lung cancer screening for higher-risk individuals? The harms of LDCT lung cancer screening include false positive tests and the consequences of unnecessary invasive follow-up procedures for conditions that are eventually diagnosed as benign. While LDCT screening leads to an increased frequency of invasive procedures, it does not result in greater mortality soon after an invasive procedure (in trial settings when compared with the control arm).(8) Overdiagnosis, exposure to radiation, psychological distress and an impact on quality of life are other known harms. Systematic review evidence indicates the benefits of LDCT screening are likely to outweigh the harms. The potential harms are likely to be reduced as refinements are made to LDCT screening protocols through: i) the application of risk predication models (e.g. the PLCOm2012), which enable a more accurate selection of the high-risk population through the use of specific criteria (beyond age and smoking history); ii) the use of nodule management algorithms (e.g. Lung-RADS, PanCan), which assist in the diagnostic evaluation of screen-detected nodules and cancers (e.g. more precise volumetric assessment of nodules); and, iii) more judicious selection of patients for invasive procedures. Recent evidence suggests a positive LDCT result may transiently increase psychological distress but does not have long-term adverse effects on psychological distress or health-related quality of life (HRQoL). With regards to smoking cessation, there is no evidence to suggest screening participation invokes a false sense of assurance in smokers, nor a reduction in motivation to quit. The NELSON and Danish trials found no difference in smoking cessation rates between LDCT screening and control groups. Higher net cessation rates, compared with general population, suggest those who participate in screening trials may already be motivated to quit. Question 3: What are the main components of recent major lung cancer screening programs or trials? There are no systematic reviews that capture the main components of recent major lung cancer screening trials and programs. We extracted evidence from original studies and clinical guidance documents and organised this into key groups to form a concise set of components for potential implementation of a national lung cancer screening program in Australia: 1. Identifying the high-risk population: recruitment, eligibility, selection and referral 2. Educating the public, people at high risk and healthcare providers; this includes creating awareness of lung cancer, the benefits and harms of LDCT screening, and shared decision-making 3. Components necessary for health services to deliver a screening program: a. Planning phase: e.g. human resources to coordinate the program, electronic data systems that integrate medical records information and link to an established national registry b. Implementation phase: e.g. human and technological resources required to conduct LDCT examinations, interpretation of reports and communication of results to participants c. Monitoring and evaluation phase: e.g. monitoring outcomes across patients, radiological reporting, compliance with established standards and a quality assurance program 4. Data reporting and research, e.g. audit and feedback to multidisciplinary teams, reporting outcomes to enhance international research into LDCT screening 5. Incorporation of smoking cessation interventions, e.g. specific programs designed for LDCT screening or referral to existing community or hospital-based services that deliver cessation interventions. Most original studies are single-institution evaluations that contain descriptive data about the processes required to establish and implement a high-risk population-based screening program. Across all studies there is a consistent message as to the challenges and complexities of establishing LDCT screening programs to attract people at high risk who will receive the greatest benefits from participation. With regards to smoking cessation, evidence from one systematic review indicates the optimal strategy for incorporating smoking cessation interventions into a LDCT screening program is unclear. There is widespread agreement that LDCT screening attendance presents a ‘teachable moment’ for cessation advice, especially among those people who receive a positive scan result. Smoking cessation is an area of significant research investment; for instance, eight US-based clinical trials are now underway that aim to address how best to design and deliver cessation programs within large-scale LDCT screening programs.(9) Question 4: What is the cost-effectiveness of lung cancer screening programs (include studies of cost–utility)? Assessing the value or cost-effectiveness of LDCT screening involves a complex interplay of factors including data on effectiveness and costs, and institutional context. A key input is data about the effectiveness of potential and current screening programs with respect to case detection, and the likely outcomes of treating those cases sooner (in the presence of LDCT screening) as opposed to later (in the absence of LDCT screening). Evidence about the cost-effectiveness of LDCT screening programs has been summarised in two systematic reviews. We identified a further 13 studies—five modelling studies, one discrete choice experiment and seven articles—that used a variety of methods to assess cost-effectiveness. Three modelling studies indicated LDCT screening was cost-effective in the settings of the US and Europe. Two studies—one from Australia and one from New Zealand—reported LDCT screening would not be cost-effective using NLST-like protocols. We anticipate that, following the full publication of the NELSON trial, cost-effectiveness studies will likely be updated with new data that reduce uncertainty about factors that influence modelling outcomes, including the findings of indeterminate nodules. Gaps in the evidence There is a large and accessible body of evidence as to the effectiveness (Q1) and harms (Q2) of LDCT screening for lung cancer. Nevertheless, there are significant gaps in the evidence about the program components that are required to implement an effective LDCT screening program (Q3). Questions about LDCT screening acceptability and feasibility were not explicitly included in the scope. However, as the evidence is based primarily on US programs and UK pilot studies, the relevance to the local setting requires careful consideration. The Queensland Lung Cancer Screening Study provides feasibility data about clinical aspects of LDCT screening but little about program design. The International Lung Screening Trial is still in the recruitment phase and findings are not yet available for inclusion in this Evidence Check. The Australian Population Based Screening Framework was developed to “inform decision-makers on the key issues to be considered when assessing potential screening programs in Australia”.(10) As the Framework is specific to population-based, rather than high-risk, screening programs, there is a lack of clarity about transferability of criteria. However, the Framework criteria do stipulate that a screening program must be acceptable to “important subgroups such as target participants who are from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, people from disadvantaged groups and people with a disability”.(10) An extensive search of the literature highlighted that there is very little information about the acceptability of LDCT screening to these population groups in Australia. Yet they are part of the high-risk population.(10) There are also considerable gaps in the evidence about the cost-effectiveness of LDCT screening in different settings, including Australia. The evidence base in this area is rapidly evolving and is likely to include new data from the NELSON trial and incorporate data about the costs of targeted- and immuno-therapies as these treatments become more widely available in Australia.

Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) is a fiber optic sensing system that is used for vibration monitoring. At a minimum, DAS is composed of a fiber optic cable and an optic analyzer called an interrogator. The oil and gas industry has used DAS for over a decade to monitor infrastructure such as pipelines for leaks, and in recent years changes in DAS performance over time have been observed for DAS arrays that are buried in the ground. This dissertation investigates the effect that soil type, soil temperature, soil moisture, time in-situ, and vehicle loading have on DAS performance for fiber optic cables buried in soil. This was accomplished through a field testing program involving two newly installed DAS arrays. For the first installation, a new portion of DAS array was added to an existing DAS array installed a decade prior. The new portion of the DAS array was installed in four different soil types: native fill, sand, gravel, and an excavatable flowable fill. Soil moisture and temperature sensors were buried adjacent to the fiber optic cable to monitor seasonal environmental changes over time. Periodic impact testing was performed at set locations along the DAS array for over one year. A second, temporary DAS array was installed to test the effect of vehicle loading on DAS performance. Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) of the DAS response was used for all the tests to evaluate the system performance. The results of the impact testing program indicated that the portions of the array in gravel performed more consistently over time. Changes in soil moisture or soil temperature did not appear to affect DAS performance. The results also indicated that time DAS performance does change somewhat over time. Performance variance increased in new portions of array in all material types through time. The SNR in portions of the DAS array in native silty sand material dropped slightly, while the SNR in portions of the array in sand fill and flowable fill material decreased significantly over time. This significant change in performance occurred while testing halted from March 2020 to August 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. These significant changes in performance were observed in the new portion of test bed, while the performance of the prior installation remained consistent. It may be that, after some time in-situ, SNR in a DAS array will reach a steady state. Though it is unfortunate that testing was on pause while changes in DAS performance developed, the observed changes emphasize the potential of DAS to be used for infrastructure change-detection monitoring. In the temporary test bed, increasing vehicle loads were observed to increase DAS performance, although there was considerable variability in the measured SNR. The significant variation in DAS response is likely due to various industrial activities on-site and some disturbance to the array while on-boarding and off-boarding vehicles. The results of this experiment indicated that the presence of load on less than 10% of an array channel length may improve DAS performance. Overall, this dissertation provides guidance that can help inform the civil engineering community with respect to installation design recommendations related to DAS used for infrastructure monitoring.

This report evaluates the Program for the Development of Industrial Districts in Brazil, launched in 2003 with funding from the Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF). The program played an important role in helping small and medium enterprises (SMEs) improve productive factors and governance in Brazil. It contributed to the creation and development of the Arranjos Produtivos Locais (APL) concept in Brazil, which has become an important cluster reference and economic development vehicle for Brazil's SME development. The program also heightened public awareness by supporting and promoting public discussions among high-level policy makers about SME development. The evaluation team assessed the program in terms of the following factors: a) The overall project lifecycle and the rationale behind it, as well as the specific industrial districts achievements and goals according to each of the program components; b) The key five dimensions, namely: (i) scope and strategic relevant; (ii) internal quality; (iii) likely impact; (iv) dialog and dissemination and (v) stakeholders and beneficiary roles.

The Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF) supports activities that promote the creation and strengthening of support services that will spur development of SMEs and stimulate demand for the use of such services. The Program for the Development of Industrial Districts in Brazil is a good example of how MIF works with local institutions to strengthen different dimensions of SME development. The case study that follows, prepared based on the Industrial Districts Program impact evaluation conducted four years after program completion, aims to contribute to better design, execution, evaluation, and impact of future MIF programs. It is presented as an educational tool for program officers at MIF and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), potential partnering institutions, and other stakeholders.

It always happens that the real information of the purchased equipment is inconsistent with the one used during the designing process of industrial constructions. Then, the structure engineer should make the decision of the strengthening method, considering the situation of the construction progress of the program, the influence region of the equipment, the degree of difficulty of the modification of the main structure, etc, which should be safety, suitable and economic. This paper introduced the design of reinforcement of an industrial construction when equipment changed. Considering the main structure is already finished the interfered lattice column was strengthened first, then a specially shaped lattice column was formed after one leg of the column was cut. Construction simulation analysis was considered by using ANASYS to restore the real progress of the strengthening. The calculation results can be used to check the bearing capacity of the specially shaped lattice column.The method mentioned in this paper could be referred by relevant projects.
