- The aim of the paper is to examine the technological districts or clusters phenomenon as an evolution of the traditional industrial district. We analyses the case of the Cambridge technology district finding that it has much in common with the Italian manufacturing districts. We also examine a case of a proto district, i.e. an area that might or might not develop in district, the proto district of Turin, trying to assess the differences with Cambridge. Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to know the dimension and scope that research on the district effect has had in the literature about industrial districts, as well as to shed some light on the connection between industrial districts and business results; or expressed differently, on how being located in an industrial district or not affects or might influence the performance of the firms located therein. Design/methodology/approach The purpose of this paper has been achieved through an exhaustive review of the empirical literature dedicated to the so-called district effect. The papers selected in the analysis were selected on the basis of the following criteria: (1) publications in scientific journals; (2) studies carried out in Spain and Italy; and (3) works published between 1994 and 2017. Findings The outcome of the literature review suggests, on the one hand, that the debate on the extent to which the territory influences the competitiveness of firms located in industrial districts still remains a topic of great interest. It can additionally be observed that most of the works dedicated to measuring the district effect have done so using three dimensions: (1) productivity/efficiency; (2) international competitiveness; and (3) innovation. Practical implications From a theoretical perspective, the findings of this paper make it possible to carry out an integrating proposal for the measurement of the district effect which revolves around three dimensions (productivity/efficiency; international competitiveness; and innovation). Originality/value This paper makes a twofold contribution to the literature: (i) it brings together the most important empirical contributions that measure the competitive advantages obtained by firms located in industrial districts through the district effect; and (ii) it theoretically and empirically establishes the essential dimensions of that effect.

Abstract:
Cassava-based industry in Jember Regency had good potential to be developed. The development could be done by forming industrial clusters. Cassava-based industrial clusters could be developed through determining potential locations. The study aimed to provide information about determining the location of the cassava-based industrial cluster development in Jember Regency. The study was conducted using the location quotient (LQ) method and the scalogram method. The results showed that the sub-districts in Jember Regency had potential locations for developing cassava-based industrial clusters, such as Kaliwates Sub-District, Patrang Sub-District, and Sumbersari Sub-District. The three sub-districts had advantages compared to other sub-districts in terms of the concentration of LQ values produced by cassava-based products. Scalogram results showed sub-districts in the highest service center hierarchy, i.e. Kaliwates Sub-District, Patrang Sub-District, and Sumbersari Sub-District. All three sub-districts had complete facilities compared to other sub-districts so that they could become centers of economy and trade. Based on the results of the LQ method and scalogram, the location of the cassava-based industrial cluster development in Jember Regency was determined in Kaliwates Sub-District, Patrang Sub-District, and Sumbersari Sub-District. New industrial districts occur in a number of forms, some of which are not subsumable under the flexibly specialized, locally embedded, and endogenously driven model based on the Italian case. In this paper, we critique the industrial districts literature, focusing on the role of the state, interdistrict mobility of labor, nonlocal externalities, and non-place embeddedness in district formation and character. We introduce the notion of the satellite industrial district, comprised of branch operations of nonlocally based corporations, as an example of a rapidly growing industrial district distinct from Marshallian and Italianate forms, and argue with evidence from South Korea that these types of districts may predominate, especially in developing countries.

The paper is a contribution to the debate about the theoretical aspects, the structure, and the competitiveness of Italian industrial districts. The work first examines the theoretical strand on industrial districts ranging from Marshall to Becattini, and focusing on the contemporary distrettualism of Giacomo Becattini, where the district is essentially a socio-economic construct and an important localized productive system. Furthermore, the paper offers an updated picture of the Italian industrial districts as they are represented in the 2011 Census by the National Statistics Institute. Finally, this study underlines the resilient competitive capacity of this typical form of industrial organization. Then, through empirical literature, it analyzes the Italian district companies, and their performance and success in foreign markets, especially with regard to “Made in Italy” products.

This paper focuses on the creation of human capital in the industrial districts. I argue that the recent firm strategy perspectives may explain regional (district) differences. In this context human resources are critical to creation and dissemination of the knowledge-based resources. I further distinguish between the degree of control and ownership of resources and transferable and non-transferable human capital. Using this conceptual framework I analyze industrial district addressable non-transferable resources. This paper suggests that firms should take on a more active role in creating and exploiting local addressable human resources. The paper ends by describing an illustrative example: the Spanish ceramic tile industry.

This work has the aim of analyzing the Como textile industrial district, through both existing literature on this subject, and the analysis of two companies. The first chapter will be about the concept of industrial district. We will analyze also the role this kind of organization always had in Italy, new challenges and pressures it has to face in the last few years, and the possible reactions to them. In the second chapter, we will present a focus on the Como textile district: its qualitative and quantitative characteristics, its performance and the way it deals with the crisis. Finally, the last chapter will focus on conclusions, and will try to relate literature to evidences from the case studies.

Abstract:
The research will focus on the development of Chinese firms concentrated in the Italian industrial district of Prato. The industrial district of Prato, specialized in the textile industry, has experienced the flow of Chinese migrants since the late 1980s. Their role in the district has changed over time, ending up by dominating the clothing industry. After an introductory chapter about both the history of Italian districts and Chinese migration flows, the second chapter will explain into details the three phases of the growth path of Chinese entrepreneurship in Prato: at the beginning they covered the role of sub-contractors for Italian firms working in the clothing industry; later, through their working regime, which will be presented as well, they exceeded the role of sub-contractors, becoming final firms specialized in Pronto Moda; finally, a new transition sees them occupying a transnational and diversified position. The third chapter mainly concerns the discussion about industrial districts in the globalization era, in particular their description in a world which has different features if compared to the one they were born in. Not in contrast with the national tendency, Chinese firms are typically small and medium-sized entreprises. In fact, the growth of Chinese firms has been outstanding, but only from a quantitative point of view, as data show. Therefore the fourth and last chapter aims at identifying possible answers for Chinese firms’ small dimensions. In order to carry out the research, data have been collected through official channels, in particular directly through the Chamber of Commerce of Prato and through its annual reports about foreign entrepreneurship. Furthermore interviews have been conducted among Chinese migrants in order to find the possible answers for the last chapter.

Over recent years, the study of industrial districts, and inter-organizational relations has become a major theme of interest in network research. Theories characterized by an increased inter-relatedness between heterogeneous actors and knowledge fields point to a new form of inter-organizational relationship development. This is basicly based on the idea of creating trust between firms to increase their chances of success and to keep pace with the development of all relevant technologies. In this thesis, we present some data from a research project we have conducted in OSTIM industrial district, Ankara, Turkey. First, we present the theoretical perspectives which appear relevant to such investigation, and which aims at developing a better a network model of the inter-organizational relations of district firms, as well as trust, informal contracts and centrality issues, particularly as regards technological innovation and technology transfer of firms, respectively. Moreover, the evidence presented in this thesis is unequivocal in noting that long term inter-organizational relations and trust may be a necessary and a sufficent condition for a small and medium sized enterprise (SME) to take its place in the center of a complex web of inter-organizational relations as seen in an industrial district.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis has been to analyse the textile industry of Prato between the years 1991 and 2001. The district has been examined in terms of population, employment, firms and international trade and we have examined the industry in the region weighted against the whole Italy. Moreover, the Location quotation has been used to measure the degree of specialization. Theories about cluster and industrial districts have been utilized to give a background to agglomeration of firms. The conclusions from our analysis are that Prato consists of a large group of firms acting in similar industry in a specific location. The district is highly dominated by small firms, which are engage in the production of a homogenous product through different stages. In terms of international trade, Prato has been able to increase its exports between the years 1995 to 2001. Furthermore, our examination of Prato shows a reduction of employment and number of firms operating within the textile sector, while the degree of specialization has increased. Our inference is that this contradiction is due to the decrease of the total textile industry in the whole country.


Syftet med denna uppsats har varit att analysera textilindustrin i Prato mellan åren 1991 och 2001. Regionen har analyserats i termer av befolkning, sysselsättning, företag och internationell handel, och vi har undersökt industrin i regionen i jämförelse med hela Italien. Dessutom har en lokaliseringskvot använts för att mäta graden av specialisering. Teorier om kluster och industriella distrikt har använts för att ge en bakgrund till hopsamling av företag. Slutsatsen vi har dragit från vår analys är att Prato består av en stor grupp företag som verkar inom en liknande industri på en specifik plats. Distriktet är till stor del dominerat av små företag vilka är sysselsatta i produktionen av en homogen produkt inom olika steg av produktionen. Gällande den internationella handeln har Prato lyckats öka sin export mellan åren 1995 och 2001. Vår undersökning av Prato har även visat en minskning av sysselsättningen och antalet företag inom industrin, men samtidigt en ökad grad av specialisering. Vår slutsats är att detta något motsägelsefulla beror på en minskning av den totala textilindustrin i hela landet.

Abstract:
This thesis is a monographic study to examine the transformation of the old industrial district of Ankara, which is yet incomplete. Investigating the significant reasons for its incompleteness, the study will concentrate on the intrinsic dynamics of this process, and particularly on such important contributions of its political actors. The aims of the study are to figure out the roles of political actors in urban transformations, and to evaluate the position of architectural production within such processes. As a consequence of this evaluation, the possible approaches for the similar forthcoming urban transformations will be questioned, with special reference to the political framework and the position of architectural production within the same framework. Maltepe developed as an industrial district since the end of the 19th Century, and served with the same function during the Republican period, until the 1950s when there were necessities and requirements for transformation. The transformation of the district occurred as two distinct processes on industrial production and industrial service areas. The industrial production area remained partially transformed, as a result of resistance mechanisms generated by the unavoidable practical difficulties. The transformation of the industrial service area remained incomplete as a result of varying design decisions at different periods. In general, the incompleteness of the transformation of the old industrial district was reasoned by either the incapability of political actors, or by the confrontations between them. The architectural production in this transformation was defined by the political actors, whose positions were characterized by such circumstances, within which the transformation occurred. Since the circumstances are different in any case, any urban transformation has different intrinsic dynamics and peculiarities in itself. Therefore, rather than approaching the issue of transformation with general policies, the strategies must be developed for each specific case. These strategies would also include the political actors, and the architects who participate in the formation of those political actors.

Abstract:
Domestic and industrial water demands are growing globally due to population growth and rapid economic development, placing increasing strains on water resources. Wastewater effluents generated from these and other activities impact the environment and are thus subject to tightening regulation. The focus of research and development in water treatment processes aims at both pollutant removal efficiency and cost of purification. Membrane distillation (MD) is a developing thermally driven technology capable of achieving extremely high environmental performance utilizing renewable energy sources to a high degree. District heating networks, and in particular those driven by biomass, represent an ideal heat supply for MD systems. This thesis presents a technoeconomic assessment of district heating driven MD for water purification in selected industrial applications. The study covers analysis of MD separation performance and the related costs from different district heating integration scenarios. The analyses are based on three types of semi-commercial MD modules, with experiments conducted at laboratory and pilot scales. The case studies include pharmaceutical residue removal from effluents of municipal wastewater treatment plant, wastewater purification in pharmaceutical industry, and ethanol concentration in bioethanol production plant. Full-scale simulation studies were carried out for the identified case studies based on the experimental data obtained from MD module along with process information gathered from the industries. Results from the pharmaceutical residue removal pilot trials showed very good to excellent separation efficiency for 37 compounds at feed concentrations ranging from ng/L to mg/L. From alcohol-water feeds, ethanol concentrations were increased from 5% to nearly 90%. Simulation studies revealed that district heating integration of MD systems is feasible. Costs per unit volume of purified water are higher than competing technologies, however the configurations enable enhanced environmental performance that would be difficult to achieve otherwise.
Kommunala och industriella vattenkrav växer globalt på grund av befolkningstillväxt och snabb ekonomisk utveckling, vilket ökar belastningen på vattenresurserna. Avloppsvatten från alla verk-samheter påverkar miljön och är därmed föremål för tilltagande reglering. Fokus i forskning och utveckling av vattenreningsprocesser syftar till att både öka effektiviteten i avlägsnandet av föroreningarna och att minska kostnaderna för detta. Membrandestillation (MD) är en ny termiskt driven teknik som kan uppnå extremt hög miljö-prestanda genom att den är effektiv och i hög grad kan drivas av förnybara energikällor. Fjärrvärmesystem, särskilt de som drivs av biomassa, utgör en idealisk värmeförsörjning för ett MD-system. Avhandlingen presenterar en teknoekonomisk bedömning av fjärrvärmedriven MD för vattenrening i utvalda industriella applikationer. Studien analyserar MD-systemets separations-prestanda och kostnader i olika fjärrvärmeintegrationsscenarier. Analyserna baseras på tre typer av semi-kommersiella MD-moduler, med experiment utförda på laboratorie- och pilotskala. Fallstudierna innefattar: borttagning av läkemedelsrester från avloppsvatten från kommunalt avloppsreningsverk; avloppsvattenrening i läkemedels-industrin; och uppkoncentrering i bioetanolproduktionsanläggning. Fullskaliga simuleringsstudier har utförts för fallstudierna baserat på experimentella data erhållna från MD-modulen och med processinformation som samlats in från industrin. Resultaten från försöken med läkemedelsrester visade mycket god till utmärkt separationseffektivitet för 37 föreningar vid förorenings-koncentrationer som sträckte sig från ng/liter till mg/liter. Vid uppkoncentrering av alkohol ökades etanolhalten från 5 % till nära 90 %. Simuleringsstudier visade att fjärrvärmeintegration av MD-system är möjlig. Kostnader per volym renat vatten är högre än konkurrerande teknik, men konfigurationerna möjliggör förbättrad miljöprestanda som skulle vara svår att uppnå på annat sätt.

Abstract:
Industrial districts represent the past and the future of the Italian production landscape. Nowadays, they are one of the few examples of economic dynamism in extra-urban areas. In recent years, these socioeconomic agglomerations have been facing huge challenges, including international competition, financial crises and servitization of the manufacturing industry. However, it is the technological change of the Fourth Industrial Revolution that represents the greatest challenge and at the same time, the greatest opportunity for industrial districts. Thus, observing how these places are facing this technological revolution is of particular interest. This thesis is based on a mix-method approach and is organised into six main chapters. Chapter 1 is dedicated to describing the theoretical backgrounds at the base of local development studies, focusing particularly on endogenous factors. More precisely, this chapter is divided into three sections. Firstly, we discuss the notion of economic embeddedness. Secondly, we provide an outline of the so-called local development ‘Italian school’ centred on the industrial district concept. Finally, we present a more recent contribution to the field from the emerging approach of new evolutionary economic geography. Chapter 2 is based on descriptive analyses aiming to grasp the current role of industrial districts in the Italian economy and how they have changed in recent years. Chapter 3 introduces the theoretical notion of territorial manufacturing servitization and tests the hypothesis connected to it, alongside the ones that emerged in the first chapter, through a multilevel regression. Chapter 4 is more theoretical; it presents a detailed discussion of the Industry 4.0 concept and reflects on the relationship between technological changes, economic organisation and places. Chapter 5 empirically investigates the sectorial and territorial articulation of the Italian 4.0 policy by using an original dataset. It also performs a quantitative counterfactual analysis to understand if industrial district firms show a higher propensity in adopting 4.0 technologies. Lastly, Chapter 6 utilises qualitative methods to compare two metalworking industrial districts. These last empirical steps allow for investigating the hypothesis that emerged in the previous chapter and the role of local governances in fostering Industry 4.0 adoption.

Abstract:
This paper discusses the development and testing of an optimization tool for the energy and economic analysis of cogeneration systems and its application to industrial districts composed by different factories (with electrical, heating and in some cases cooling demand), with time-variable loads and several day-types profiles. The discussion compares three cogeneration systems, respectively based on: (i) a simple cycle gas turbine or (ii) a recuperative cycle gas turbine, both with heat recovery and an absorption chiller, and (iii) an internal combustion engine with electrical chiller units. Test case specifications also include tariff, regulatory and weather conditions, provided that performance of the main components are corrected as a function of load and ambient conditions. The model demonstrates to be really effective in defining the best operating strategy for each cogeneration system; detailed results are presented, in terms of annual energy balances, energy savings compared to separate generation systems (grid losses as well as heat distribution losses are taken into account) and economic analysis. A final parametric analysis is carried out to show the influence on the final results of different assumptions on the combination of fuel prices and electricity tariffs.

It is a common fact that the confinement and to become unfunctional of the historical factories due to they have remained behind of technological improvement, not been managed effectively and polluted to the environment. However, their falling into disuse the demolition and the destruction of these buildings cannot be accepted. A lot of factories in Türkiye that have been able to reach today from the industrial background had been demolished for their land value, and a few of them had been re-functioned by transforming. These plants as contributes to the economic development of the countries and bears the stamp of the past, also could be re-evaluated and transferred to future generations by preserving their original identities. With the transformation of a historical plant, not only an industrial heritage would be protected but also this act would contribute to the economic development and cultural significance of the urban, and improve the quality of life. On this issue, there are lots of examples in Western countries. In this study, a succesful transformation sample from Canada-Toronto has been handled. In Distillery Region where has a significant role in the establishment, enrichment and physical embodiment of the city of Toronto, the regeneration/transformation process has been achieved thus the region has been redounded to tourism industry. In the study, the development of Distilery and its meaning for the urban is stated, the transformation process and its effect on urban is discussed and at this issue some suggestions are made while determining the deficiencies in Türkiye.

Such an actual material may be the entry of natural and anthropic heavy metals into the soil at industrial areas. The object of this work: (i) to work out a predictive model of the total heavy metals inputs to soil at the Kryvyi Rih ore-mining & metallurgical District and (ii) to identify ways to use this model in biological education. Our study areas are located in the Kryvyi Rih District (Dnipropetrovsk region, Central Ukraine). In this work, classical scientific methods (such as analysis and synthesis, induction and deduction, analogy and formalization, abstraction and concretization, classification and modelling) were used. By summary the own research results and available scientific publications, the heavy metals total inputs to soils at Kryvyi Rih District was predicted. It is suggested that the current heavy metals content in soils of this region due to 1) natural and 2) anthropogenic flows, which are segmented into global and local levels. Predictive calculations show that heavy metals inputs to the soil of this region have the following values (mg ⋅ m2/year): Fe – 800-80 000, Mn – 125-520, Zn – 75-360, Ni – 20-30, Cu – 15-50, Pb – 7.5-120, Cd – 0.30-0.70. It is established that anthropogenic flows predominate in Fe and Pb inputs (60-99 %), natural flows predominate in Ni and Cd inputs (55-95 %). While, for Mn, Zn, and Cu inputs the alternate dominance of natural and anthropogenic flows are characterized. It is shown that the predictive model development for heavy metals inputs to soils of the industrial region can be used for efficient biological education (for example in bachelors of biologists training, discipline "Computer modelling in biology").

We investigate whether better access to markets through an improved road network plays a role in improving firm profitability in India. We construct a district-level market access index using shapefiles of India's road network, district boundaries, and nightlight raster images and estimate the shortest driving distances for districts using the road network. Using the annual survey of industries data for India during 2001–2015, we show that market access through improved road connectivity resulted in a lower dispersion of ROA between 2001 and 2015 in India.

It examines the effect of the presence of large oil palm plantations and their industrial processing mills on artisanal palm oil processing in two districts in the Western region of Ghana. Although artisanal and industrial processors have co-existed for a long time in the same catchment areas, little is known about the impact of this relationship on artisanal processing. Acknowledging the importance of rural diversity, complexity, and difference in agriculture-based off-farm activities, this paper also examines the effect of community and household level factors on palm oil processing incidence and intensity as well as the impact of processing on food (in)security.

This project explores workforce and occupations within the highway, street, and bridge construction industries (NAICS 237310) in Indiana. There are five specific deliverable comprised of three data reports, one policy document, and a website. The first data report includes an assessment of the workforce based on the eight-part framework, which are industry, occupations, job postings, hard-to-fill jobs, Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP), GAP Analysis, compatibility, and automation. The report defines a cluster followed by a detailed analysis of the occupations, skills, job postings, etc., in the NAICS 237310 industry in Indiana. The report makes use of specialized labor market databases, such as the Economic Modeling Specialists International (EMSI), CHMURA JobsEQ, etc. The analysis is based only on the jobs covered under the unemployment insurance or the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) data. The second data report analyzes jobs to jobs flows to and from the construction industry in Indiana, with a particular emphasis on the Great Recession, by utilizing the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data. The third data report looks into the equal employment opportunity or Section 1391 and 1392 data for Indiana and analyzes specific characteristics of that data. The policy report includes a set of recommendations for workforce development for INDOT and a summary of the three data reports. The key data on occupations within the NAICS 237310 are provided in an interactive website. The website provides a data dashboard for individual INDOT Districts. The policy document recommends steps for development of the highways, streets and bridges construction workforce in INDOT Districts.

Abstract:
We provide the first reliable measure on the size of India’s creative economy, explore the many challenges faced by the creative industries, and provide recommendations to make India one of the most creative societies in the world. India’s creative economy—measured by the number of people working in various creative occupations—is estimated to contribute nearly 8% of the country’s employment, much higher than the corresponding share in Turkey (1%), Mexico (1.5%), the Republic of Korea (1.9%), and even Australia (2.1%). Creative occupations also pay reasonably well—88% higher than the non-creative ones and contribute about 20% to nation’s overall GVA. Out of the top 10 creative districts in India, 6 are non-metros—Badgam, Panipat (Haryana), Imphal (Manipur), Sant Ravi Das Nagar (Uttar Pradesh), Thane (Maharashtra), and Tirupur (Tamil Nadu)—indicating the diversity and depth of creativity across India. Yet, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, India’s creative exports are only one-tenth of those of the People’s Republic of China. To develop the creative economy to realize its full potential, Indian policy makers would like to (i) increase the recognition of Indian culture globally; (ii) facilitate human capital development among its youth; (iii) address the bottlenecks in the intellectual property framework; (iv) improve access to finance; and (v) streamline the process of policy making by establishing one intermediary organization. India must also leverage its G20 Presidency to put creative economy concretely on the global agenda.
