Abstract:
This thesis draws on work done as part of a joint research project on industrial networks in Hungary and Slovenia, in which I participated in studying the types and depth of cooperation between buyers and suppliers [Dyker et al. 2003]. The theoretical motivation for this study is that industrial ties between firms are socially embedded and that this social embeddedness needs to be considered in order to understand the process by which the economies of the post-socialist countries of Europe are integrating into European production networks. We chose Slovenia as a country that has benefited from

Abstract:
This thesis consists of three studies of social intervention in Sudan. The first offers a critique of institutional voids, a concept used to describe contexts lacking neoliberal market institutions, intermediaries, and practices. Notions of voids underpin much liberal peace thinking and justify postwar interventions that seek to build institutions to support peace and recovery. Similarly, the concept of voids is increasingly used in management and organization studies to describe emerging market and poverty contexts. The question 'What institutional arrangements exist in institutional voids?'

This thesis reports on an exploratory study of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in a developing countries context and with special reference to the mining and agricultural industries in Malawi. CSR in Malawi is progressively becoming a significant and complex area of investigation not only for business ethics scholars, but also to development scholars and practitioners. It is considered a crucial issue not only because of the complexity of the social, economic and political environment in which companies operate, but also because of the many social and environment impacts which business a

Abstract:
Using large-company panel data, this thesis empirically analyses investment decisions in major European countries. We particularly concentrate on three issues: the taxation of capital in the EU, the role of agency costs of debt on investment decisions, and the empirical analyses of the investment-uncertainty relationship. First, based on a dynamic system in capital and Tobin's q ratio, some simplified analytical results are derived to simulate various tax policy effects on investment. Also, for a single investment project, a model is developed to consider jointly the role of uncertainty and ir

There is limited recent evidence from the UK on the sourcing and backgrounds of Chief Executive Officers (CEOs). Practitioner views are dominant and suggest a frequent “churn” of these individuals between lucrative roles. In particular, the implications of hiring profiles, organisational career paths and demographic backgrounds have not featured in the research focus, which has perpetuated the practitioner view of CEO succession.
