Abstract:
This article considers the recent literature on firm markups in light of both new and classic work in the field of industrial organization. We detail the shortcomings of papers that rely on discredited approaches from the “structure-conduct-performance” literature. In contrast, papers based on production function estimation have made useful progress in measuring broad trends in markups. However, industries are so heterogeneous that careful industry-specific studies are also required, and sorely needed. Examples of such studies illustrate differing explanations for rising markups, including endogenous increases in fixed costs associated with lower marginal costs. In some industries there is evidence of price increases driven by mergers. To fully understand markups, we must eventually recover the key economic primitives of demand, marginal cost, and fixed and sunk costs. We end by discussing the various aspects of antitrust enforcement that may be of increasing importance regardless of the cause of increased markups.

Abstract:
Eco-criticism is an emerging area of investigation in literary and critical studies aiming at the analysis of the role and representation of nature and environment in literary works. Eco-critics speak for nature which, they believe, is silenced, and oppressed by anthropocentric mindset and human lust for profit and comfort. Critique of modern industrial civilization and celebration of pre-colonial primitive cultures are the important concerns in the contemporary eco-critical discourse. Anarchism aims at the eradication of modern civilization, advocating the restoration of pre-modern and pre-egalitarian primitive mode of existence. Anarcho-primitivism, combining anarchists’ distrust for modern civilization and authoritarianism with primitivists’ interest in simple and primitive mode of living, involves a critique of modern industrial civilization, advocating a return to non-civilized primitive ways of life. Anarchist and anarcho-primitivist elements are perceptible in Lawrence’s post-war fiction which exudes his aversion for modern industrial civilization for its barrenness, decay and sterility, and its unspeakable damage to the natural environment, and his predilection for non- European primitive cultures and societies which, in comparison to dead European existence, present a better alternative with their vitality and healthier mode of existence. This paper, by adopting the qualitative research method and using the key concepts of the representative anarchist, primitivist and ecocritical thinkers as theoretical framework, has attempted to analyse anarcho-primitivism in Lawrence’s post-war fiction from ecocritical perspective. Abstract:
Blockchain technology started as the backbone for cryptocurriencies and it has emerged as one of the most interesting technologies of the last decade. It is a new paradigm able to modify the way how industries transact. Today, the industries’ concern is about their ability to handle a high volume of data transactions per second while preserving both decentralization and security. Both decentralization and security are guaranteed by the mathematical strength of cryptographic primitives. There are two main approaches to achieve consensus: the Proof-of-Work based blockchains—PoW—and the Proof-of-Stake—PoS. Both of them come with some pros and drawbacks, but both rely on cryptography. In this survey, we present a review of the main consensus procedures, including the new consensus proposed by Algorand: Pure Proof-of-Stake—Pure PoS. In this article, we provide a framework to compare the performances of PoW, PoS and the Pure PoS, based on throughput and scalability.

Abstract:
Robotised Non Destructive Testing (NDT) presents multifaceted advantages, saving time and reducing repetitive manual workloads for highly skilled Ultrasonic Testing (UT) operators. Due to the requisite accuracy and reliability of the field, robotic NDT has traditionally relied on digital twins for complex path planning procedures enabling precise deployment of NDT equipment. This paper presents a multi-scale and collision-free path planning and implementation methodology enabling rapid deployment of robotised NDT with commercially available sensors. Novel algorithms are developed to plan paths over noisy and incomplete point clouds from low-cost sensors without the need for surface primitives. Further novelty is introduced in online path corrections utilising laser and force feedback while applying a Conformable-Wedge probe UT sensor. Finally, a novel source of data beneficial to automated NDT is introduced by collecting frictional forces of the surface informing the operator of the surface preparation quality. The culmination of this work is a new path-planning free, single-shot automated process removing the need for complex operator-driven procedures with a known surface, visualising collected data for the operator as a three-dimensional C-scan model. The dynamic robotic control enables a move to the industry 4.0 model of adaptive online path planning. Experimental results indicate the flexible and streamlined pipeline for robotic deployment, and demonstrate intuitive data visualisation to aid highly skilled operators in a wide field of industries.

Abstract:
This article explores the process of centralization of water resources by the Mexican nation-state between 1880 and 1940, and, in particular, how the postrevolutionary state facilitated, after 1920, the transference of control over the Topo Chico mineral springs from the local agrarian community to industrial bottling companies. Using archival evidence, it highlights the importance of science and law in this process and argues that centralization must be understood in terms of “primitive accumulation.” The article focuses on hot mineral springs, which provide a privileged window on centralization and primitive accumulation but are largely ignored in the historiography of water. Abstract:
This paper describes a method of graphically simulating modular machines within a computer aided design environment. This forms part of a much larger Science and Engineering Research Council (SERC) funded programme aimed at advancing modern practices when designing and building manufacturing machines. A generalized approach to the synthesis of the generic features of various kinematic motion pairs is presented and prismatic and revolute motion primitives generalized in their functional and geometric aspects. A hierarchical ring and tree data structure has been designed and implemented to comprehensively represent these motion pairs and to simulate their performance. More complex modular manufacturing machines can be represented using information from a library of up to three degree of freedom motion modules. Seven two degree of freedom motion primitives and twelve three degree of freedom motion primitives with articulation configurations have been analysed and included in the motion primitive library. The configuration of modular machines comprised of physically separate but logically connected distributed motion primitives are described. Examples of a two-finger industrial robot gripper and a three-finger industrial robot hand are used to demonstrate the general principles.

Abstract:
Transparent quartz glass tubes are widely used in medicine, pharmacology, chemistry and other industries. Their parameters are standardized, therefore, compliance with GOST requirements is important in the production process. In this article, an optical method based on technical vision is proposed, it allows real-time detection of thickness differences, possible ovality and chips at the end of the tube during their drawing. The OpenCV library of algorithmic primitives was used for image processing, and the program implementing the processing was written in Python 3.7. The algorithm uses a color linear light source to facilitate locate tube end contour, transition to the HSV color space to improve the stability of the control and transition to polar coordinates for effective detection of tube end defects. The average time spent processing an image of 700×700 pixels with a resolution of 300dpi was 125ms.

Abstract:
Driven by artificial intelligence and computer vision industries, Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) are now rapidly achieving extraordinary computing power. In particular, the NVIDIA Tegra K1/X1/X2 embedded GPU platforms, which are also treated as edge computing devices, are now widely used in embedded environments such as mobile phones, game consoles, and vehicle-mounted systems to support high-dimension display, auto-pilot, and so on. Meanwhile, with the rise of the Internet of Things (IoT), the demand for cryptographic operations for secure communications and authentications between edge computing nodes and IoT devices is also expanding. In this contribution, instead of the conventional implementations based on FPGA, ASIC, and ARM CPUs, we provide an alternative solution for cryptographic implementation on embedded GPU devices. Targeting the new cipher suite added in TLS 1.3, we implement Edwards25519/448 and Curve25519/448 on an edge computing platform, embedded GPU NVIDIA Tegra X2, where various performance optimizations are customized for the target platform, including a novel parallel method for the register-limited embedded GPUs. With about 15 W of power consumption, it can provide 210k/31k ops/s of Curve25519/448 scalar multiplication, 834k/123k ops/s of fixed-point Edwards25519/448 scalar multiplication, and 150k/22k ops/s of unknown-point one, which are respectively the primitives and main workloads of key agreement, signature generation, and verification of the TLS 1.3 protocol. Our implementations achieve 8 to 26 times speedup of OpenSSL running in the very powerful ARM CPU of the same platform and outperform the state-of-the-art implementations in FPGA by a wide margin with better power efficiency.

Abstract:
For manufacturing automation, for instance, the robotic automation of automobile sub-assembly, CAD data serves as DB offering the geometric information of parts essential for robotic manipulation. However, a direct application of CAD for the robotic manipulation of parts may be of an issue, due to the fact that the particular format of the CAD data available, e.g., STL, does not directly provide certain geometric entities such as surface patch primitives and/or features that are required for robotic manipulation. In this paper, we present a novel method for extracting geometric primitives and/or features, such surface patch primitives as planar, cylindrical, conic, and spherical patches, from the STL format of CAD data, such that an industrial part/object can be represented as a logical sum of these surface patch primitives extracted. This surface patch primitive based modeling makes the automated reasoning involved in the recognition and pose estimation, as well as the grasp planning, of parts/objects easy to be done. The proposed method is applied to various CAD data samples for experimentation: the results demonstrate the reliability as well as the computational efficiency of the proposed method in the extraction of surface patch primitives.

Abstract:
With the advent of agriculture 3.0 and 4.0, in view of efficient and sustainable use of resources, researchers are increasingly focusing on the development of innovative smart farming and precision agriculture technologies by introducing automation and robotics into the agricultural processes. Autonomous agricultural field machines have been gaining significant attention from farmers and industries to reduce costs, human workload, and required resources. Nevertheless, achieving sufficient autonomous navigation capabilities requires the simultaneous cooperation of different processes; localization, mapping, and path planning are just some of the steps that aim at providing to the machine the right set of skills to operate in semi-structured and unstructured environments. In this context, this study presents a low-cost, power-efficient local motion planner for autonomous navigation in vineyards based only on an RGB-D camera, low range hardware, and a dual layer control algorithm. The first algorithm makes use of the disparity map and its depth representation to generate a proportional control for the robotic platform. Concurrently, a second back-up algorithm, based on representations learning and resilient to illumination variations, can take control of the machine in case of a momentaneous failure of the first block generating high-level motion primitives. Moreover, due to the double nature of the system, after initial training of the deep learning model with an initial dataset, the strict synergy between the two algorithms opens the possibility of exploiting new automatically labeled data, coming from the field, to extend the existing model’s knowledge. The machine learning algorithm has been trained and tested, using transfer learning, with acquired images during different field surveys in the North region of Italy and then optimized for on-device inference with model pruning and quantization. Finally, the overall system has been validated with a customized robot platform in the appropriate environment.

Abstract:

In central Europe, and in particular in Moravia and in Silesia, some concentrations of archaeological sites, dated from 28.000 to 25.500 BP, appeared all way long a natural corridor, which is the only passageway between Northern and Southern Europe. These sites have provided a wide range of artifacts, bringing many data about social, cultural and symbolic aspects of the Upper Paleolithic societies. They are now known as the «Pavlovian complex». In order to refine the definition of the « Pavlovian », this thesis seeks to renew the reading of lithic industries. This study includes both the classical sites and the ones recently excavated. It leads t subdivide the Pavlovian into three mains groups according to their eco-typo-technologica characteristics (the group with microsaws, the group with geometric microliths and the group wit the point of Milovice ). At least two of these groups present specific lithic tradition and an abundan material culture that reveals some social behaviors, both well structured and recurring, which plead in favour of a high level of cultural homogeneity

Abstract:
The studied ivory, bone and antler artifacts from the Canadian Arctic, only correspond to harpoon heads that served to build the Palaeo-Eskimo chronology (~ 4000-500 B.P.). To ascertain the chronological subdivision between the Pre-Dorset and Dorset cultures a typological study associated with a technological approach was performed. Palaeo-Eskimo technological and economical practices have been derived from the study of six sites located around the Foxe Basin: Igloolik region (Parry Hill, Lyon Hill, Jens Munk, Freuchen and Kaersut sites) and northern Nunavik (Tayara site). The assumption of a Pre-Dorset/Dorset continuum could be confirmed. The observed evolution of osseous industries during Palaeo-Eskimo period (and more precisely the Pre-Dorset/Dorset transition) has been interpreted in terms of socio-cultural changes. The observed technological changes (i.e. harpoon head hafting) could be associated with new patterns of raw material exploitation (diversification in the selection of materials and anatomical elements, as well as functional categories). They testify to the important socio-cultural changes (collective rather than individual hunting) already observed in the settlement patterns (aggregation of the humans in larger houses for longer time periods). Abstract:

Abstract:
Archaeological data evidence that the Zacapu region experienced, at the beginning of the 13th c. AD, deep socio-political changes associated with migrations of population that formed the Tarascan kingdom. The purpose of this study is to observe these phenomena in the light of a technological approach of the ceramic material, taking into account unpublished pottery from three sites of the Zacapu Basin dated from 850 and 1450 AD. The manufacturing process of the ceramics was rebuilt to highlight their technical similarities or differences as well as their morphological and stylistical traits in order to determine if there is a continuity of the production during the periods predating the emergence of the Tarascan kingdom. This research is complemented by petrographic analyses that let identify the clay sources used by the potters. The socio-economic pattern of the ceramic production has also been examined in order to characterize the organization of the production itself as well as the distribution of the finished products. Finally, a last chapter tackles the socio‑cultural implications of our results and attempts to link them to the history of the Tarascan people

Abstract:
This thesis is a comprehensive study of Late Neolithic jewellery from the Dikili Tash site. This vast corpus of over 2,300 objects includes a large stock of items discovered in a house dating to the Late Neolithic II. Beads are the main type of ornament in the corpus (70%), they are made mainly from stone, terracotta, shell and metal, shell and stone pendants represent 12% of the corpus, boar tooth appliques make up 11% and shell rings 7%. We have been able to reconstruct some of the main processes involved in the manufacture of the adornments from research into the provenance of the materials and use-wear analysis. Thanks to the wealth of spatial and chronological information, the study of local contexts and some specific assemblages provides a clearer picture of the evolution and organisation of jewellery making during the Late Neolithic at Dikili Tash. Comparisons between the Dikili Tash corpus and known pieces from the Aegean-Balkan world, from the Peloponnese to the Danube, help us to understand the objects themselves and provide information about possible exchange networks used to provide raw materials and the manufactured pieces. They highlight the connections between these different communities, who shared a common language, particularly in the domain of adornments and jewellery

Abstract:
AbstractIn recent times, learning by demonstration has seen tremendous progress in robotic assembly operations. One of the most prominent trajectory-level task models applied is Dynamic Movement Primitives (DMP). However, it lacks the ability to tackle complex operations as often encountered in industrial assembly. Augmenting low-level models with a high-level framework in which different movement segments are deliberately parameterised is considered promising for such scenarios. This paper investigates the combination of trajectory-level DMPs with Methods-Time Measurement (MTM). We demonstrate how the MTM-1 system is utilised to establish distinguished DMP models for five of its basic elements, paving the way to benefitting from the sophisticated MTM system. The evaluation of the framework is conducted on a generic pick and place operation. Compared to a one-model-fits-all DMP approach for the whole task, the proposed method shows the advantage of appropriate temporal scaling, accuracy levelling and force consideration at adequate times.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Banda Primitiva de Llíria is presented as an open heritage resource, which has been built on the uses, values and symbols assigned to it by the local town of Llíria and its inhabitants over the musical society’s two centuries of history. This work focuses on analysing how this musical phenomenon contributes to positioning creativity and cultural industries at the centre of local development, reinforcing the identity elements of Llíria and the Valencian Region. It intends to support the safeguarding, respect and awareness of one of the oldest civic bands in Spain, providing greater visibility and creating positive recognition of the fundamental importance of this form of intangible cultural heritage for social cohesion and development, in an environment that is transformed into one of collective action, shared culture and creativity.

Abstract:
Accident Hazards, dangers, losses and risk are what we would to like to eliminate, minimize or avoid in industry. Modern industries have created many opportunities for these against which man’s primitive instincts offer no protection. In today’s complex industrial environment safety has become major preoccupation, especially after the realization that there is a clear economic incentive to do so. Industrial hazards may cause by human error or by physical or mechanical malfunction, it is very often possible to eliminate the worst consequences of human error by engineering modification. But the modification also needs checking very thoroughly to ensue that it has not introduced some new and unsuspected hazard.

Abstract:
The problems of the correlation of cosmopolitan and national identities are too complex to be unambiguous assessment, let alone alternative values (related to the ecological paradigm and the spiritual traditions of other cultures). However, it is obvious that without preserving the national identity, the integrity and independence of the national state becomes problematic. On the other hand, without taking into account the consequences of information wars and aggressive cosmopolitan tendencies of global media culture, there is a threat of losing the national information space and displacing it to the periphery of socio-political and economic life in Ukraine and in the modern world. In the process of working on research issues, the author of the article came out on the principles of objectivity, systematic and determinism, which in combination of their observance made it possible to determine the influence of the post-industrial information society on the formation of a new type of mass consciousness. As a result of the influence of globalization processes, there was a filling of the domestic information space with a supernational mass culture of entertainment, which in most cases leads to the spread of a primitive world outlook based on the ideology of consumption society, without leaving places to preserve sociocultural traditions and national identity. Therefore, given the problems of preserving national identity, it is necessary should be mentioned the information security of the state, which occupies one of the most important places, among various aspects of information security, since the unresolved problem of protection of the national information space significantly complicates the processes of formation of national identity.
