ILARDI, DAVIDE. "Data-driven solutions to enhance planning, operation and design tools in Industry 4.0 context." Doctoral thesis, Università degli studi di Genova, 2023. https://hdl.handle.net/11567/1104513.

Abstract:
This thesis proposes three different data-driven solutions to be combined to state-of-the-art solvers and tools in order to primarily enhance their computational performances. The problem of efficiently designing the open sea floating platforms on which wind turbines can be mount on will be tackled, as well as the tuning of a data-driven engine's monitoring tool for maritime transportation. Finally, the activities of SAT and ASP solvers will be thoroughly studied and a deep learning architecture will be proposed to enhance the heuristics-based solving approach adopted by such software. The covered domains are different and the same is true for their respective targets. Nonetheless, the proposed Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning algorithms are shared as well as the overall picture: promote Industrial AI and meet the constraints imposed by Industry 4.0 vision. The lesser presence of human-in-the-loop, a data-driven approach to discover causalities otherwise ignored, a special attention to the environmental impact of industries' emissions, a real and efficient exploitation of the Big Data available today are just a subset of the latter. Hence, from a broader perspective, the experiments carried out within this thesis are driven towards the aforementioned targets and the resulting outcomes are satisfactory enough to potentially convince the research community and industrialists that they are not just "visions" but they can be actually put into practice. However, it is still an introduction to the topic and the developed models are at what can be defined a "pilot" stage. Nonetheless, the results are promising and they pave the way towards further improvements and the consolidation of the dictates of Industry 4.0.

Abstract:
The construction industry has a great opportunity to streamline its operations even more by making greater use of the digital revolution. The industry today uses a lot of manual data management and analysis to get an overview of the business and to make decisions. This can be a time-consuming process that could be made more efficient through Business Intelligence (BI). BI is a technology that automatically, with the help of selected Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), shows the current status of how a business performs. This can allow managers and executives to make decisions easier and faster. This study examines which KPIs that are of common interest to companies and organizations in the construction industry as well as how these KPIs can be presented to the end users of a BI application. To investigate this, data is collected through literature studies and interviews, which results in a list of common KPIs for the industry. From this common list, a number of KPIs are selected to be visually represented. An analysis of the results, indicates that KPIs are of different importance and relevance depending on which sector of the construction industry the interviewee belongs to. There also appears to be sector-specific KPIs and the common list suggests that the profit margin is of great importance throughout the whole industry. KPIs can be represented in different types of charts and diagrams, depending on the purpose they hold, and should be designed so that they are intuitive and easy to understand.<br>Bygg- och hantverksbranschen har stor möjlighet att effektivisera sin verksamhet ännu mer genom att i större utsträckning utnyttja den digitaliserade utvecklingen.

Abstract:
<p>Software engineering tools are being used in the industry in order to improve the productivity and the quality of the software development process. The properties of those tools are being perceived to be unsatisfactory. For example, researchers have found that some problems are due to deficient integration among the tools. Furthermore, a continuing problem is that there is a gap between the IT education and real demand of tool-skills form IT industry. Consequently, knowledge is needed of the properties of software development tools as well an understanding of demanded tool-skill from the industry. </p><p>The purpose of this study is to survey commercial software development environment (SDEs) that are used today in professional software engineering and discuss their advantages adn disadvantages. A secondary goal of the study is to identify the actual requirements from the industry on the IT-education. </p><p>A questionnaire was sent out to 90 software developers and IT managers of 30 IT companies in Sweden. The results of the survey show that IT companies, for most part, use SDEs from commercial software vendors. Respondents report that common problems of the SDEs are the following: bad integration among the tools, problems to trace software artifacts in the different phases of the programming cycle, and deficient support for version control and system configuration. Furthermore, some tools are difficult to use which results in a time-consuming development process. </p><p>We conclude that future software development environments need to provide better support for integration, automation, and configuration management. Regarding the required tool-skills, we believe that the IT education would gain from including commercial tools that cover the whole software product lifecycle in the curriculum.</p>

Berg, Martin, and Albin Eriksson. "Toward predictive maintenance in surface treatment processes : A DMAIC case study at Seco Tools."

Full text
Abstract:
Surface treatments are often used in the manufacturing industry to change the surface of a product, including its related properties and functions. The occurrence of degradation and corrosion in surface treatment processes can lead to critical breakdowns over time. Critical breakdowns may impair the properties of the products and shorten their service life, which causes increased lead times or additional costs in the form of rework or scrapping.  Prevention of critical breakdowns due to machine component failure requires a carefully selected maintenance policy. Predictive maintenance is used to anticipate equipment failures to allow for maintenance scheduling before component failure. Developing predictive maintenance policies for surface treatment processes is problematic due to the vast number of attributes to consider in modern surface treatment processes. The emergence of smart sensors and big data has led companies to pursue predictive maintenance. A company that strives for predictive maintenance of its surface treatment processes is Seco Tools in Fagersta. The purpose of this master's thesis has been to investigate the occurrence of critical breakdowns and failures in the machine components of the chemical vapor deposition and post-treatment wet blasting processes by mapping the interaction between its respective process variables and their impact on critical breakdowns. The work has been conducted as a Six Sigma project utilizing the problem-solving methodology DMAIC.  Critical breakdowns were investigated combining principal component analysis (PCA), computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and statistical process control (SPC) to create an understanding of the failures in both processes. For both processes, two predictive solutions were created: one short-term solution utilizing existing dashboards and one long-term solution utilizing a PCA model and an Orthogonal Partial Least Squares (OPLS) regression model for batch statistical process control (BSPC). The short-term solutions were verified and implemented during the master's thesis at Seco Tools. Recommendations were given for future implementation of the long-term solutions. In this thesis, insights are shared regarding the applicability of OPLS and Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression models for batch monitoring of the CVD process. We also demonstrate that the prediction of a certain critical breakdown, clogging of the aluminum generator in the CVD process, can be accomplished through the use of SPC. For the wet blasting process, a PCA methodology is suggested to be effective for visualizing breakdowns.

Lewis, Paul Robert. "Cutting data for automated turning tool selection in industry." Thesis, Durham University, 1996. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/5240/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the determination of cutting parameters (cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut) in turning operations within an industrial environment. The parameters are required for the purposes of tool selection, working with a variety of batches of different materials. Previous work of this nature, little of which has been transferred into industry, has concentrated primarily on deriving optimum cutting conditions, based on a variety of deterministic and non- deterministic approaches, with a general reliance on experimentally-derived input variables. However, this work is only suited to tool selection for a single material. Under industrial conditions tools will frequently need to be selected for more than one material, in tool/material combinations not recommended by tool makers. Consequently, the objective of the research described in this thesis was to employ existing cutting data technology and to use it as the basis for a cutting data system, suitable for multi-batch tool selection. Two companies collaborated in this work, by making available suitable personnel and the provision of shop floor facilities on their premises. The initial work concentrated on the development of an algorithmic model, based on established theory. This was then tested industrially, using the concept of shop floor approved data as a substitute for optimum cutting data. The model was found to work reasonably, but required further development to make it suitable for multi- batch tool selection. This development took three main forms: a) a reduction of input data, particularly in the number of experimentally-derived variables, b) the removal of the tool/material-specific constraints traditionally used in cutting data optimisation, c) a method of data correction based on adjustment of the mean and standard deviation of the data. Further industrial testing was carried out using the resulting system. It was demonstrated that it was possible for a relaxed system with reduced input variables and appropriate data correction to function within an industrial environment.

Abstract:
Digital transformation is rising rapidly, where absolutely any kind of data is readily available. With the rise in digital information and technologies, businesses are aiming at measuring their processes and thereby getting better control over their operations. Industries are striving to increase efficiency and productivity to survive in the high global competitive market by adopting a digital tool. Simulation has been one of the most common tools of Industry 4.0 that allows a virtual representation of the real system. The use of simulation has tremendously increased in manufacturing industries due to its advantages where changes can be made and checked virtually before implementing them to the physical system. Data acquisition has been an important aspect that remains unfocussed especially in Engineer to Order (ETO) and Make to Order (MTO) environments where the production processes are complex, nonstandardised and depend heavily on manual work leading to a prolonged barrier towards digitalisation. So, can data create new values for companies? Are firms realising the importance of data? As the economy is moving towards a more data-driven state, it is essential for companies to realise the importance of data and find efficient ways of data collection. The thesis is based on a case study at an electrical transformer manufacturing firm taking its first step towards digital technology to have better control over its manufacturing processes. However, this transformation is primarily hindered by the limited availability of data and poor data quality due to manual data acquisition methods. Analysis of organisational documents and Value Stream Mapping (VSM) have been used to analyse missing primary and secondary production data. The results of this study conclude that modelling of the system can give additional data gaps, and the simulation model can be served as a powerful decision support tool for the firm. This switch in approach from intuition-based decision making to more fact-based decision making can result in better planning and control over the production. This thesis will lay the foundation for studies related to data acquisition and simulation in an ETO environment as it is not widely discussed in the existing literature

Gustafson, Christopher, and Sam Florin. "Qualification of Tool for Static Code Analysis : Processes and Requirements for Approval of Static Code Analysis in the Aviation Industry."

Abstract:
In the aviation industry, the use of software development tools is not as easily adopted as in other industries. Due to the catastrophic consequences of software errors in airborne systems, software development processes has rigorous requirements. One of these requirements is that a code standard must be followed. Code standards are used to exclude code constructions which could result in unwanted behaviours. The process of manually ensuring a specific code standard can be costly. This process could be automated by a tool for static code analysis, however, this requires a formal qualification. This thesis evaluates the process of qualifying a tool for static code analysis in accordance with the requirements of the major aviation authorities EASA and FAA. To describe the qualification process, a literature study was conducted. To further explain how an existing tool could be put through the qualification process, a case study of the existing tool Parasoft C/C++ test was conducted. The results of the literature study show what processes must be completed in order to qualify a static code analysis tool. Importantly, the study shows that no requirements are put on the development process of the tool. This was an important takeaway as it meant that an existing tool could be qualified without any additional data from the developer of the tool. The case study of Parasoft C/C++ test showed how the tool could be configured and verified to analyze code in accordance with a small set of code rules. Furthermore, three documents including qualification data were produced showing how the qualification process should be documented in order to communicate the process to an authority. The results of the thesis do not provide the full picture of how a tool could be qualified as the software, in which the tool is used, is considerations the are specific to the software the tool is used to develop still need to be taken into consideration. The thesis does, however, provide guidance on the majority of the applicable requirements. Future research could be done to provide the complete picture of the qualification process, as well as how the process would look like for other types of tools.<br>Inom flygindustrin är användandet av olika programmeringsverktyg inte lika självklart som inom andra industrier.

Full text
Abstract:

Abstract:
Tools are indispensable for all diligent professional practice. New concepts and possibilities for paradigm shifting are emerging with recent computational technological developments in digital tools. However, new tools from key concepts such as “Big-Data”, “Accessibility” and “Algorithmic Design” are fundamentally changing the input and position of the Product Engineer and Designer. After the context introduction, this dissertation document starts by extracting three pivotal criteria from the Product Design Engineering's State of the Art analysis. In each one of those criteria the new emergent, more relevant and paradigmatic concepts are explored and later on are positioned and compared within the Product Lifecycle Management wheel scheme, where the potential risks and gaps are pointed to be explored in the experience part. There are two types of empirical experiences: the first being of case studies from Architecture and Urban Planning — from the student's professional experience —, that served as a pretext and inspiration for the experiments directly made for Product Design Engineering. First with a set of isolated explorations and analysis, second with a hypothetical experience derived from the latter and, finally, a deliberative section that culminate in a listing of risks and changes concluded from all the previous work. The urgency to reflect on what will change in that role and position, what kind of ethical and/or conceptual reformulations should exist for the profession to maintain its intellectual integrity and, ultimately, to survive, are of the utmost evidence.<br>As ferramentas são indispensáveis para toda a prática diligente profissional.

There may be potential causality between time series data. However, the causality of time series data may be quite complex. If data mining can be used to clarify the causality between time series, it is possible to find available predic-tion models. In order to let users explore the relationships between sequences quickly, this study mainly uses Excel to create a set of database. The database allows users to input the required time series data, and then use the internal VBA writing decision tree algorithm to explore its sequence. which makes users find results quickly. Therefore, this study will use the machine tool and economic indicators as actual cases to summa-rize various economic indicators, import and export amount and quantity as time series data and to find the causality between data.

碩士<br>國立交通大學<br>科技管理所<br>89<br>This thesis proposes the DEA models to assess the performance of firms in information service industry. We analyze and compare firms’ input resources on research, management and operation phases with related outputs in different years using series DEA models. Each firm’s financial ratios are analyzed to extract common factors by factor analysis; then, all firms are grouped according to each firm’s activities, manpower composition and financial characteristics by cluster analysis. We hope to find out the common characteristics of outstanding firms to explain the difference in inputs and outputs between different firms, to provide suggestions on resources reallocation, and to analyze the relationship between performance and financial characteristics. Different from previous studies, this thesis contributes a systematical method to find out possible reasons and to induct improve ways of firms’ performance. Most previous studies aim at explaining each firm’s performance evaluation result. That is not the main purpose of this study, so we do not make further detail analysis on each firm. In the empirical analysis of DEA, the results compared with the phase of firm’s financial representation indeed reflect the real situation. This implies DEA is a good assessment way for performance evaluation and improvement under correct selection of inputs and outputs.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立成功大學<br>製造資訊與系統研究所<br>106<br>In machine tool industry, it’s critical to maintain high-quality products during the manufacturing process while the variance in the process shows significantly impact on quality issue, especially in mass production. Typically, it’s necessary to monitor the real-time status of equipment control; that is, it’s urgent to develop a production system which has real-time monitoring for driving productivity and reducing variance. This study developed several statistical control charts via data mining framework. First, data was divided into many groups by cluster analysis, and the baseline of product can be defined for each cluster. Second, univariate control charts were developed based on the baselines of qualified products. In particular, the control charts were based on time series and profile monitoring since the monitored target will constantly change over time. Finally, we also extended to develop the multivariate control chart with Hotelling’s T2 control chart and kernel distance control chart for the comparison. An empirical study of machine tool manufacturer was conducted to validate the proposed framework. The result shows that the quality system embedded with data mining and machine learning technology significantly enhanced the monitoring reliability of control charts and improved the yield.

碩士<br>國立勤益科技大學<br>研發科技與資訊管理研究所<br>101<br>Taiwan, a hinterland economy, the main economic development is based on export. The enterprises in the pressure of global trade competition how to overcome the shorter product life cycle by tighten new product development time will affect directly the competitiveness of enterprises. Machine tools are the bases of machine industry, being named “Mother of Machines”, they are widely used in all machine production, including all production industry producing goods for daily life. As the technology progressing day by day, the demands and requirement of machine tools increase consequently; machine tool industry is therefore classified as a major developing industry by all developed countries. In the electronic era of Information Management, the enterprises must effectively use the resources of information and technology to enhance their competitiveness in a competitive market to enhance their competitiveness. Fully electronic business is a global trend. Moreover, the Product Data Management is the key to achieve the target. This study will establish a product data management system by DMADV of Six Sigma’s DFSS. First, define development process of the machine tool and breakdown items by IDEFO process in the stage of Define. Next, collect the problems and ineffective action in development process by design the Questionnaire in the phase of Measure. In the analysis phase (Analyze), use the performance assessment matrix to identify the degree of importance of the working item, impact and effect. The items of outside the control limits can be discussed by analysis the distribution of resources and the effectiveness. In the design phase (Design), the new working process will be designed to improve the quality of R &; D performance by the analysis results of degree of importance of the working items, impact and effect. In the final phase (Verify), the development efficiency of new Machine tools will be improved by applying the new information management systems. The pattern of using DMADV of DFSS to build a PDM system will help all future researchers in this area by giving valuable reference in the texts.
