Full textThe thesis shows that fiscality has maintained inequality in disposable income in the European Union at a constant level since 1980. It évaluâtes the endogeneity bias of the college premium in the United-States at 30% of the cross-sectional estimates after 1980. It proposes the first empirical assesment of unified growth theory, and reproduces the trajectories of growth, fertility, life expectancy and éducation in the United-States since 1860. Then it calculates global inequalities in years of schooling and human capital inequalities since 1870. Dynamics of incorne inequality within countries is examined in the light of Kuznets hypothesis. The latter is validated even after controling for educational level and human capital inequality, although éducation explains much more of the decrease in income inequality than the Kuznets eftect does

Full textThe territorialization perceptible in French educational policies is clearly visble in their approach to schooling for two-year-olds. A look at the statistics involved reveals large discrepancies between regions. This situation begs a close study of the processes at work, of the reasoning behind the choices and actions of all the political, institutional and social instances behind the schooling of two-year-olds. An analysis of local policies in the departments of Eure and Seine-Saint-Denis and two of their towns, Vernon and Saint-Denis, shows that schooling for two-year-olds is seen in terms of territorialization. This flows from a double political will on the part of the State: to redistribute political powers from the national to the local levels and to fight against social inequalities which affect success at school by means of the choice, based on the notion of positive discrimination, of opening classes for two-year-olds in socially deprived areas. This policy is a stake in the new process of " deconcentralization " (dispersion of decisional powers and decentralization) defined as the political area in modern French society where room is given for communication, negotiation, contradiction and confrontation

Full textBeginning with the Celtic Tiger years, Ireland’s remarkable economic growth and the inequalities existing in its wake, this PhD tries to re-assess the issue of contemporary inequalities in modern societies emphasising the Irish case from 1922 to 2002. To what extent did inequalities exist in Ireland prior to the advent of the Celtic Tiger? What were Irish attitudes to inequalities and how have they evolved? Do Irish people care about equality? Based on an economic, social, historical and political analysis resting on recent comparative studies of the development of welfare state systems and the varying extents of their redistributive agendas as well as on reflections on inequalities and fairness in our societies, this thesis aims to show that current inequalities in Ireland can best be understood in the light of an inability to create a more just society from 1922 onwards. The author argues that three particular sets of factors, demographic and economic factors, political factors, and Irish mentalités have, in close interaction with one another, provided a strong framework which has prevented the advent of a more just society between 1922 and 2002

Full textSince the end of the Second World War, Quebec society has undergone major changes that may have influenced the recent increase in the standard of living of Quebecers: i) major school reforms; ii) the change from the Fordist model of production to the post-Fordist model of production; iii) increased contribution of women to the labor market; iv) the change from the modern family model to the contemporary family model; and v) the aging of the population. The main objectives of this thesis are, on the one hand, to better understand how these transformations could have affected the increase in the standard of living from 1986 to 2016 and, on the other hand, to highlight the inequalities in the standard of living between households according to their characteristics. To do this, we propose to examine the evolution of the standard of living from a macroeconomic perspective, using real GDP per capita, and from a microeconomic perspective using adjusted income. Some of our variables had negative impacts on the standard of living (changes in the demographic profile of the population, the decrease in the number of workers per household, the decrease in the number of hours worked level as well as changes in household composition). Other variables had nuanced impacts or little impact (changes in the age and sex of the primary maintainer, the decrease in household size and the stagnation of employment income). On the other hand, certain variables had positive impacts (the evolution of the employment rate, the growth of productivity, the decrease in the number of dependent children per household, the increase in the level of education and the growth government transfers).

Full textThe present study is on the effects of household debt on wealth inequality in Canada from 1999 to 2012. It aims to contribute to the debate that is currently taking place between two camps, those who view rising household debt as the deterioration of household finances, and those who argue that the level of household debt remains serviceable. Recognizing household debt as a phenomenon situated at the intersection of the labour market and the financial market, we sought to determine its effects on household wealth at two levels of analysis: i) the wealth distribution; and ii) socioeconomic classes. This was accomplished notably by a detailed analysis of the two principal components of wealth (assets and debts), which were decomposed according to an original classification of financial categories. The study of household finances from a stratification perspective allows us to explain precisely what the principal explanation of household debt, the lifecycle hypothesis, cannot: the reasons why the rise in household debt between 1999 and 2012 was so spectacular. The study of household debt through the prism of social inequality allows us to highlight a fact that is rarely acknowledged: wealth inequality reflects important differences in borrowing capacities. The results show that the rise in household debt observed between 1999 and 2012, as remarkable as it was, did not lead to the deterioration of household finances, but it did lead to an increase in wealth inequality between socioeconomic classes. These results invite us to view credit as a facet of modern household savings, a leading factor of inequality and a form of social exclusion.

Full textThe city of Bristol has found itself at the centre of a historical turmoil related to its involvement in the triangular trade and the collective memory of that era. On the one hand, a few descendants of slave traders (plantation owners of the Caribbean and Bristol Merchant Venturers) claim to be very proud of their forefathers “entrepreneurial skills”, on the other hand, the black community is demanding that Bristol should pay tribute to the people who enabled it to become a rich city. Ethnic minority groups believe that there is a need for Bristolians to recognise that the present-day economic deprivation suffered by the Black community is directly related, in some measure, to the city's silence on this matter. The argument inherited from the slave trade era about racial hierarchy is the root of the question of re-writing history by a minority community as much as the way the black community is perceived in this society which is trying to define what it means to be British in this now more and more multicultural society. The City Council, reluctant at first to start a debate about the past, has been involved in a number of public gestures such as the opening of the permanent exhibition dedicated to the slave trade, Pero's Bridge, so on and so forth. Can the city be considered as an example of “Repentance and Réconcilation”? Even though public gestures about collective memories and remembrance are also politically motivated, is the city of Bristol heading nonetheless towards a peaceful collective memory?
