Abstract:
The inerrancy of Scripture is often seen as a uniform doctrine. In this article, I argue that one must distinguish between different formulations of this belief. By comparing Carl Fredrik Wisløff’s teachings on biblical inerrancy with the doctrine expressed in the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, I show that there are some key differences between them which makes a distinction necessary.

Abstract:
"The present article explores the typological contributions to the inerrancy debate of David S. Dockery, the Chancellor of Trinity International University. Resulting from controversies in the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) during the 1970s and 80s, Dockery provided a valuable typological framework for identifying a spectrum of positions in the inerrancy debate. Dockery’s frameworks provide a helpful lens for understanding the complexity of inerrancy. Some positions are more conservative and deductivist, and other positions are more liberal and inductivist. These distinctions often create a barrier, a presuppositional divide, which is difficult to cross in a debate context. Dockery’s variations provide a means of at least understanding the divide and the positions that differ from one’s own. To that aim, I present Dockery’s variations as a vital component for all attempts at dialogue in the inerrancy debate. Keywords: evangelicalism, biblical inerrancy, David S. Dockery, biblical authority, hermeneutics "

Abstract:
Abstract: In the 1960s, Canadian theologian Clark H. Pinnock declared that saving human knowledge of God could only be built upon the plain sense of the infallible and inerrant text of Holy Scripture. In the ensuing decades, however, Pinnock’s confidence in an inerrant Bible severely waned. A close examination of Pinnock’s early epistemological outlook reveals critical defects that sowed seeds of his later departure from a traditional confession of Scripture’s total trustworthiness. Pinnock’s theological migration reminds scholars and church leaders that only an epistemology that is rooted in the being, knowledge, and revelation of God in Scripture supplies the necessary context for a robust confession of Scripture’s inerrancy and its relationship with the observable world.

Abstract:
This short essay discusses the significance and relevance of the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy. The first part offers some general observations on the context and the content of the statement, the second answers some common objections to the statement and the concept of inerrancy, such as its polemical and defensive posture, its intellectualism, its conception of truth, and its excessive focus on the text and the reader. The essay concludes with an exploration of some hermeneutical implications of the inerrancy.

Abstract:
I address an epistemic and related ontological dificulty with the doctrine of biblical inerrancy. The ontological problem: If biblical inerrancy applies to the original autographs, why would God allow these to disappear from the scene? The epistemological problem: Given that the original autographs are gone, we lack a way to know exactly what the original writings were. The first problem is solved by distinguishing text types and tokens, and claiming that semantic meaning and inerrancy are underivative features types. The second is resolved by claiming that in the actual world, we are epistemically better off with the original tokens gone.

Abstract:
Textual criticism has long existed as part of the hermeneutic discipline. However, many communities reject this approach. Even scientifically, textual criticism provides a new understanding of the scriptures, especially the New Testament. The many variants of the Greek New Testament make textual criticism present to reconstruct the original text of the Greek New Testament. Nevertheless, on the other hand, this scientific development deals with the doctrine of the inerrancy of the Bible. This study attempts to present the logical foundations of the urgency of textual criticism related to the doctrine of the inerrancy of the Bible. This study examines the importance of textual criticism of the inerrancy of the Bible. The approach used is exploratory qualitative. The results showed that the hermeneutic method of textual criticism did not weaken the truth of the Bible. The inerrancy of the Bible is maintained when an interpreter uses this method. The meaning of the text is more understandable and far from error because of the approach to the highlighted New Testament Greek.

Abstract:
Abstract. This article was written to answer a question: what are the similarities and differences, as well as continuity and discontinuity, on the concept of biblical inerrancy according to modern Evangelical thoughts represented by the International Council of Biblical Inerrancy (ICBI) which formulated the Chicago Statements of Biblical Inerrancy (CSBI) and its supplementary documents compared to the views of pre-modern Christian thoughts or the Church Fathers. This comparison was made to seek the construction of a (more) proportionate articulation on the doctrine of biblical inerrancy. In fact, the differences between both of them are not essentially related to the terminology problem, but rather show different metaphysical, epistemological, hermeneutical preconpositions, and different justification criteria for the validity of the Scripture. The Church Fathers emphasized Scripture as a spiritual and supernatural text so there was no need to always prove its validity historically and factually, while modern Evangelicals that emphasized the harmony of God's revelation with human knowledge emphasized the dimension of accuracy and historicality as the basis for their concepts on biblical inerrancy.

Abstract:
In 1978 a group of evangelical philosophers and theologians held a meeting to decide what the definitive statement on the doctrine of inerrancy would be. Drawing on the thought of B.B. Warfield and others this group came up with a statement comprising of a short statement, nineteen articles including both statements of affirmation and denial, as well as, an exposition of these articles. Taken in its entirety, this statement is intended to be the Evangelical statement determining all subsequent information about the doctrine of inerrancy. Leading evangelicals, including Carl F.H. Henry signed this document in order to establish a consensus on what one meant when using the term inerrancy. Almost three decades later this term is still used with a sense of confusion and the doctrine is no less controversial. In fact, it still is responsible for the division of departments in many evangelical institutions of higher education in North America. The following thesis hopes to help loosen this doctrine from its theological ‘stronghold’ and place it in a position where it will be less likely to cause division amongst evangelicals. By examining the thought of both B.B. Warfield, who helped create the doctrine, and Carl F.H. Henry, who played a contemporary role in the formation of the Chicago Statement and who might rightly be considered the evangelical theologian of the twentieth century, this thesis brings to light certain presuppositions of the doctrine of inerrancy that allow it take a position that undergirds other theological doctrines. By identifying the nature of truth and authority as the main tenants of the inerrantist position, the thesis examines these terms in light of the thought of both Warfield and Henry. Their thought is found to be remarkably similar to certain principles and concerns raised by Enlightenment philosophers and it is concluded that the understandings of truth and authority presupposed by the doctrine of inerrancy ultimately are biased by Enlightenment philosophy and so are an inadequate representation of the terms as used in Scripture and tradition. The thesis suggests that an adequate understanding of truth would be primarily Christological in nature and, therefore, a larger category than the one presupposed by the doctrine of inerrancy. Also, an adequate understanding of authority would presuppose the contemporary work of the Holy Spirit, which again makes for a much larger pneumatological category than the one presupposed by the doctrine of inerrancy as it is currently defined. Enlarging these categories in no way necessitates the denial of inerrancy altogether. Rather it removes the doctrine of inerrancy from its theological pedestal and places it amongst other beliefs that might support the truth and authority of Scripture but by no means establish them. The concluding chapter ends with a statement of what this new doctrine of inerrancy might look like.

Abstract:
Presbyterians were used to controversies. Since the early nineteenth century, conservative Presbyterians adopted Common Sense Philosophy as a basis for asserting that truth could be discovered by objective inquiry. Princeton Theological Seminary became the intellectual center for promoting that outlook. Charles Hodge presented a view of the Bible as containing “facts” to be discovered. His successor, B. B. Warfield, developed the view that the Bible was “inerrant.” Warfield believed Christianity could prevail through rational argument. Responding to the rise of liberal theology and biblical criticism in the Northern Presbyterian denomination, conservatives in 1910 succeeded in having its general assembly declare five doctrines concerning biblical inerrancy, the miracles and Christ’s nature, and atoning works as “essential to the faith.”

Abstract:
Abstract The Introduction explores the primary grounds on which textual difficulties in scripture were formulated in early modern England, charting early modern theories of and approaches to interpretive difficulty. It explores how Catholic–Protestant and intra-Protestant polemic framed biblical difficulty in English culture. Such polemic sets the stage for English literary encounters with scripture’s textual concerns and highlights key textual and hermeneutic arguments. In their seminal debate during the early years of the Reformation, Martin Luther and Erasmus discussed not whether scripture or the Church was the authoritative basis of faith, nor scripture’s inerrancy, but whether it was difficult. The Dark Bible opens with this polemic and its English offspring, in particular that of William Tyndale and Sir Thomas More, and William Fulke and Gregory Martin.
