Abstract:
Research investigating the efficacy of infant massage has largely focused on premature and low birth weight infants. The majority of investigations have neglected highly acute patients in academic neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). The current study was developed with two aims: (Phase 1) to develop, implement and demonstrate the feasibility and safety of a parent-trained compassionate touch/massage program for infants with complex medical conditions and (Phase 2) to conduct a longitudinal randomized control trial (RCT) of hand containment/massage versus standard of care in a level III academic Center for Newborn and Infant Critical Care (CNICC). Certified infant massage instructors (CIMIs) taught parents to massage their hospitalized infants. Massage therapy and instruction were performed for seven consecutive days and health outcomes were collected for up to 1 month following treatment. Caregivers, nurses and certified infant massage therapists indicated moderate to high levels of satisfaction and feasibility with the implementation of hand containment/massage in a level III academic center CNICC. In addition, infant behavioral and physiological measures were within safe limits during the massage sessions. All caregivers participating in the massage group reported high levels of satisfaction 7 days into the intervention and at the 1-month follow-up with regards to their relationship with their infant, the massage program's impact on that relationship and the massage program. Due to unequal and small sample sizes, between group analyses (control versus massage) were not conducted. Descriptive infant characteristics of health outcomes are described. Preliminary data from this study indicates feasibility and safety of infant massage and satisfaction among the caregivers, CIMIs and the nurses in the CNICC. An important contribution from this study was the demonstration of the infants' safety based on physiological stability and no change in agitation/pain scores of the infants receiving massage. Massage in a tertiary urban academic NICU continues to be an area of needed study. Future studies examining infant health outcomes, such as weight gain, decreased length of hospitalization and caregiver–infant bonding, would provide greater insight into the impact of massage for medically fragile infants.

Abstract:
Maternal-infant bonding is an affective maternal-driven process that occurs primarily to her infant. Prophylactic interventions or treatment of disordered bonding include infant massage. Evidence suggests that oxytocin plays an important role in facilitation of mother–infant bonding. Main objective is to assess the effect of infant massage on salivary oxytocin level of mothers and their infant during postpartum period. And to assess the difference of oxytocin level in normal and disordered maternal-infant bonding. This study is a quasi-experimental study, carried out on 37 pairs of mothers and their infants from second to sixth month postpartum, attending Basateen Gharb primary health care center (PHC) in Albasateen district, Cairo, Egypt. Postpartum Bonding Questionnaire (PBQ) was used to differentiate between mothers with normal and disordered bonding. Pre and post massage salivary samples were taken from mothers and their infants. Tappan’s technique of infant massage was used. Results showed that 48.6% (N = 18) of mothers had disordered maternal infant bonding. Mothers and infants with normal bonding showed a positive relationship with their salivary oxytocin level post massage. On the other hand, mothers and infants with disordered bonding showed no change in their salivary oxytocin level post massage. Salivary oxytocin level in male infants has decreased post massage, while oxytocin level in female infants has increased post massage in mothers with normal bonding. We concluded that infant massage increases salivary oxytocin level in mothers and infants with normal bonding and it has no effect on salivary oxytocin level of mothers and infants with disordered bonding.

Abstract:
Infant massage therapy is an inexpensive tool that should be utilized as part of the developmental care of the preterm infant. Nurses have been hesitant to begin massage therapy for fear of overstimulating the infant and because there has been insufficient research to prove its safety. Recent research, however, has shown that the significant benefits of infant massage therapy far outweigh the minimal risks. When infant massage therapy is properly applied to preterm infants, they respond with increased weight gains, improved developmental scores, and earlier discharge from the hospital. Parents of the preterm infant also benefit because infant massage enhances bonding with their child and increases confidence in their parenting skills. This article discusses the benefits and risks of massage for preterm infants and their families and explains how to implement massage therapy in the neonatal intensive care setting.

Abstract:
Infant massage is performed in various international contexts. There is a need for an updated literature review on this topic. The purpose of the current review was to investigate the effects of infant massage. A systematic literature review was conducted to investigate the effects of infant massage on the following outcomes: pain relief, jaundice, and weight gain. The inclusion criteria were infants from 0–12 months. The literature search was performed until January 2022, using the CINAHL, PubMed, and PsycINFO databases, and included studies published from 2017–2021, returning 16 RCT/CCT studies with a total of 1416 participating infants. A review template was used by two independent reviewers to assess the risk of bias in the included studies. The results were synthesized and presented in the form of tables and narratives. In five of seven studies (n = 422 resp. n = 717) investigating pain relief, infant massage was found to alleviate pain. In all six studies (n = 455) investigating effects on infant massage and jaundice, beneficial effects were found on bilirubin levels. In all four studies (n = 244) investigating weight gain, increased weight gain was found among participants who received infant massage. The present literature review provides an indication of the current state of knowledge about infant massage and identifies its positive effects; however, the results must be interpreted with caution. Infant massage may be effective at relieving pain, improving jaundice, and increasing weight gain. Although statistically significant differences were not found between all experimental and control groups, no adverse effects of infant massage were observed. By placing the aforementioned effects in the context of child health care, infant massage may prove beneficial on these outcomes. Given the dearth of research on infant massage in the context of child health care, further research is warranted.

Abstract:
Fathers may feel dissatisfied with their ability to form a close attachment with their infants in the early postpartum period, which, in turn, may increase their parent-related stress. Our study sought to determine if an infant massage intervention assisted fathers with decreasing stress and increasing bonding with their infants during this time. To address the complex father‐infant relationship, we conducted a pilot study using a mixed methodology approach. Twelve infant‐father dyads participated in the intervention, and 12 infant‐father dyads populated a wait-list control group. Paternal stress was measured using the Parenting Stress Index at baseline and at postintervention. We found infant massage instruction significantly decreased paternal stress. Our findings were also supported by the qualitative data and suggest fathers may benefit from applied postnatal education.

Abstract:
The problem experienced by toddlers is that growth disorders in Indonesia have started to emerge from children aged 1-6 months, so that efforts are needed to reduce the rate of growth disorders or to or to increase weight presentation. Increasing body weight is an indicator of infant health that can be used as a benchmark for infant growth. Body weight is the most important anthropometric measure and is most often used in newborns (neonates). One of the treatments that can be done to increase body weight is by giving massage to babies. Baby massage can stimulate the penvernaan hormones insulin and gaselin, so that food absorption becomes better. This causes babies to feel hungry quickly so they eat more often and gain weight. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of infant massage on infant weight gain. The method in this study is a literature review, which tries to explore how the effect of infant massage on infant weight gain. The results in this study indicate that the results of 6 previous studies indicate that there is a significant effect of infant massage on the increase in infant body weight. The conclusion in this study is that massage in infants can increase the baby's weight. This is because the massage that is carried out regularly on babies is used to massage the legs, stomach, chest, hands, back, and stretching movements can increase the baby's weight. The massage will cause nerve action potential that stimulates the vagus nerve.

Sleep is the baby's main requirement because when the baby falls asleep growth and development will be optimal and there will be an increase in brain function and body metabolism. In infants aged 1-3 months have a sleep duration of 14 hours-18 hours per day. Baby's growth and development will be less optimal if there is a sleep disorder. Baby massage is one way to overcome the problem of sleeping in a baby. Baby massage is a gentle rubbing motion on the surface of the baby's body from face to foot. This massage will help relax the baby's muscles and facilitate blood circulation so that the baby becomes calmer and sleeps more soundly. This study aims to determine the effect of infant massage on sleep duration in infants aged 1-3 months. The design of this study used a pre-experimental design with the design of one group pretest-posttest design without a control group. Samples are infants aged 1-3 months, totaling 42 people selected by purposive sampling. The variables measured in this study were infant massage and sleep duration. This study used a statistical test paired t-test (a = 0.05). The results of this study are that there is an effect of infant massage on the duration of infant sleep, this is confirmed by the value of Wilcoxon test with sig 0,000 which then tested the hypothesis with a value of α = 0.05. Abstract:
Abstract Objective Bohring-Opitz syndrome (BOS) is a rare congenital disorder with approximately 60 documented cases worldwide. Distinguishing characteristics include a complex phenotype with associated feeding intolerance, emesis, sleep difficulties, respiratory complications, seizures, and failure to thrive. Infant massage is a supportive intervention with documented positive effects in medically-fragile infants, suggesting its potential as a non-pharmacological treatment in BOS. Limited data exists regarding the clinical management of patients with BOS. To initiate this effort, we report the effects of infant massage on a male with BOS. Method Born at 32 weeks gestation, the patient presented with chronic respiratory failure, tracheostomy, and ventilator dependence. Development was complicated by chronic infections, autonomic instability, feeding intolerance, seizures, and prolonged sedation wean. Clinicians provided infant massage (~15 minutes/week) to the patient’s hands and feet from the ages of 12-20 months, with the goal of decreasing heart rate. Heart rate was measured after each massage session over a 3-month period (14 sessions total) during hospitalization. Results Decreased heart rate was recorded following all massage sessions, with an average decline of 10.4 beats per minute. Decreased non-purposeful body movements, increased tactile orientation, increased feeding tolerance, and timely discharge from the hospital were also noted. Conclusion This case study offers initial support for the use of infant massage for hospitalized patients with BOS. Infant massage was associated with lowered heart rate and improved hospitalization course. While the researchers propose integration of infant massage within the clinical management of patients with BOS, further research is warranted to elucidate its implications for improved health outcomes.

Although a consistently used protocol is not available to treat these infants, interventions commonly used include a pharmacological regimen and supportive care such as swaddling, frequent feedings, decreased sensory stimulation, and protection from skin breakdown (Murphy-Oikonen, Montelpare, Bertoldo, Southon, & Persichino, 2012). A qualitative study was designed to better understand how infant massage might impact these babies’ behavior and the mothers’ relationship with their babies. Themes derived from the data include empowerment, enjoyment and bonding, and calm and comfort. The themes suggest that infant massage helps alleviate withdrawal symptoms in infants while fostering a connection between mother and child.

Abstract:
Infant massage has been a long time and common practice, yet investigating this technique in the academic context is still rarely done. Mother in fact plays an important role in ensuring the effectiveness of infant massage, and therefore she is required to learn about it. This research attempts to find out the effects of infant massage training and education on the infant’s physical development for mother in rural areas in Indonesia. This study was designed to compare two groups, namely, the first group of 17 mothers with infant massage education and training intervention since the third trimester, and the second group of 17 mothers without intervention. Body weight, body length, circumference of the upper arms, suckling frequency and suckling duration of the babies in the two groups were compared one month after delivery. One month after the group of mothers giving massage to their babies, there were significant differences (p < 0.05) in body weight, body length, suckling frequency of the babies in the two groups, while none for circumference of upper arms and suckling duration. Comparing the effects of massage on babies before and after giving infant massage, there were significant differences in suckling durations and body weight of the babies. Our study suggests that, after receiving an education on infant massage, mothers with babies are recommended to give massage to their babies. Infant massage brings various benefits to the babies, and it can be performed in natural contexts, including in rural setting.

Abstract:
Baby massage is a stimulus that has many benefits for the growth and development of babies. One of them is to facilitate the digestive system in babies, so babies who often receive massage therapy rarely experience digestive problems and have a good pattern of defecation. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the frequency of infant massage and the pattern of defecation of infants who were exclusively breastfed. The research method used is quantitative research with a cross sectional research design. The number of samples in this study were 40 respondents. The results of the research conducted using the Chi-Square statistical test was p= 0.036<0.05, meaning that both variables had a statistically significant relationship between the frequency of infant massage and the pattern of defecation.

Massage stimulation has consistently led to greater anthropometric in preterm infant by increasing IGF-1 in which plays an important role in promoting growth by stimulating cell growth, multiplication and inhibiting apoptosis. This research to analyze the effect of massage stimulation on IGF-1 and anthropometric in breastfeeding preterm infant. A randomized control trial was conducted on preterm infant with gestational age less than 37 weeks between February – May 2018 in nursery Dr. Soetomo Hospital. Fifty infants in nursery was randomly assigned to massage stimulation or control group. Massage stimulation consisted for three, 15 minutes periods per day for 10 days. Insulin Growth Factor -1 serum was examined on day 1 and 10. Data were analyzed by statistical software using t-test and spearman correlation. The average increase of IGF -1 in massage group was 4.8 (SD 4.41) and 3.1 (SD 3.57) in control group. The average increase of body weight was 252.2 (SD 208.55) in massage group, and 137.9 (SD 69.78) in control group. The average increase of body length was 2 (0.68) in massage group, and 1.1 (0.33) in control group. The average increase of head circumference was 1.5 (SD 0.82) in massage group, and 0.9 (0.28) in control group. The positive correlation between the mean increase of IGF-1 and body length was 0.347. The conclusion was IGF-1 and anthropometric increase in both groups, but the massage group has a significantly higher mean. An increase in IGF-1 correlates with increase in body length.
