Background: Diabetes is one of the commonest and most important metabolic disorders that affect the health of pregnant women and infants. Diabetic mellitus is one of the most common metabolic disorders complicating pregnancy. The neonatal mortality rate is over five times that of nondiabetic mothers and is higher irrespective of birth weight and gestational age. There has been significant improvement in the outcome of diabetic pregnancies largely due to better metabolic control before and during pregnancy and vigorous neonatal care in developed countries. The purpose of this study was to identify the process of providing care to infants among Oklahoma Cherokee mothers. American Indian infants are one of the most vulnerable populations in the United States, thus making them more vulnerable to the care they receive. American Indian mothers have cultural differences that influence the care they provide to their infants. Given the dearth of knowledge about this process and its significance to the health and well-being of American Indian children and perhaps other children, a qualitative grounded theory method was used to build scientific knowledge

This paper examines the effects of prenatal exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) on birth outcomes in a low-pollution setting. Using linked administrative data on births and air quality in Quebec (2008-2015), we compare infants exposed to different pollution levels within the same neighborhoods and time periods to account for socioeconomic and seasonal differences. We find no significant effects at the population level, but exposure increases the risk of low birth weight and preterm birth among female infants and children of less-educated mothers. These findings suggest that even in low

This paper investigates the effects of releasing remoteness constraints on the accessibility and quality of maternal and infant healthcare. Through a field experiment, we provided complementary demand- and supply-side subsidies to improve healthcare for impoverished pregnant women residing in remote Nicaraguan communities. The subsidies increased the utilization of antenatal care by skilled providers, the quality of care received, institutional delivery, and postnatal care utilization, along with the quality of postnatal care received by mothers. Abstract:
This study examines singleton preterm birth rates from 2012-2018 by rurality and census region using birth certificate data from the National Center for Health Statistics. The data showed preterm singleton birth rates were consistently higher in rural versus urban areas across all race and ethnic groups, payment sources for delivery, and persons participating in the Women, Infants, and Children program. The increased risk for infant and maternal mortality and morbidity in rural areas highlights the importance of health assistance programs for pregnant women, mothers, and children in these rura

Background: Pertussis vaccination in pregnant women is a strategy currently recommended to foster passive maternal immunity and minimize severe complications from pertussis in not yet completely vaccinated infants. However, the potential interference of maternal antibodies on the development of infant antibody responses induced by childhood whole cell pertussis (wP) and acellular pertussis (aP) vaccination is not well-defined. Methods: This randomized controlled trial (NCT02408926) followed healthy term infants born to tetanus diphtheria acellular pertussis (Tdap)-vaccinated mothers at a terti
