Temperament of 4-month-old infants of diabetic (n=l6) and nondiabetic (n=l8) mothers did not differ reliably in terms of maternal ratings on the Infant Behavior Questionnaire (IBQ) (Rothbart, 1981). Item analysis indicated that scales on a reduced version of the IBQ maintained high internal reliability. Discrete behaviors, adapted from the Infant Behavior Record (Bayley, 1969), and conceptually related to each scale of the IBQ, were observed by mothers and by a trained observer during the infants' well-child examinations. Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship among the number of toys in an infant's play environment, infant's distractibility, and how often a mother teaches her infant during a play session. This study takes samples from videotapes of 12-month old children playing with their mothers during a 5 minute free-play situation. Twenty-two mother and infant pairs were selected for this study based on their previous participation in a language study. The measures used in this study were: (1) the number of maternal teaching utterances to her infant; (2) the total number of utterances

Abstract:
Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the treatment, course and outcome of pregnancy in Finland using two cohorts of diabetic women. The clinical cohort consisted of data from all 210 women with Type 1 diabetes and their 296 pregnancies managed between 1986 and 1995 in the two northernmost provinces of Finland. The register-based study population included all 1442 mothers with a singleton birth who had insulin treatment during pregnancy in 1991-1995 according to the Medical Birth Register. Of these mothers, 954 (66%) had pre-existing diabetes. Insulin-treated diabetes complicated

Abstract:
Compared to term infants, it is known that preterm infants have relatively poor regulation and are less able to handle stimulation, which only allows limited time of alertness favorable for productive social interaction. Parents that are less knowledgeable in this would often feel distressed when they try to interact with their babies. Also, non-optimal parent-infant interaction may further stress the preterm infants. So, intervention that seeks to handle this problem is needed. Mother-infant intervention is a strategy that teaches mothers or parents to respond appropriately to infants’ cues

Abstract:
Maternal sleep is problematic for many mothers both during pregnancy as well as postpartum and is highly associated with poor mood. This thesis provides a thorough examination of this problem as well as understanding the best methods for improving sleep and mood for new mothers. A meta-analysis was conducted to provide a quantitative analysis of nine randomised controlled trials investigating sleep-focussed interventions during pregnancy or in the first 12 months postpartum. Results indicated that interventions improve infant total sleep time but not the frequency of night-wakings. Improvemen

Abstract:
The food an infant is fed can reflect many things: a source of nutrition, the social and cultural circumstances into which an infant is born, or even a family’s beliefs about the body and breast milk as a source of nutrition. Exclusive breastfeeding, currently the gold standard for infant feeding in the United States (US), is often identified as an expectation in discourses on being a “good mother.” African American mothers in particular are the least likely group in the US to breastfeed in any capacity and many efforts are underway to increase the breastfeeding rates of this population.
