Abstract:
Infanticidal behavior has been very common through-out human history. It is suggested that progenicidal behavior, whether consciously or unconsciously practiced, be defined and considered within a cultural, ecological and historical matrix in anthropological studies. Sociobiological and materialist interpretive models are considered too extremist by many anthropologists. Both approaches have an inherent tendency to treat "culture" as a subsidiary variable in infanticide, rather than as encompassing progenicidal phenomena and strategies. A useful conceptual framework with which to approach data collection is one where individuals negotiate progenicidal and child care decision-making within a sociocultural, ecological, technological, demographic and economic framework.

Abstract:
Infanticide is a point at issue, especially in China in the 19th century. Often seen as a systematic practice non desired daughters, it wasn't actually customary. The habit of leaving the dead and dying children outside the houses, on the ground, lead the western witnesses astray. The existence of infanticide as well as the existence of a “Chinese charity” has been denied by some and exaggerated by others. However, the activities of the Christian missionaries willing to “save” and baptise as many children as possible aren't questioned. They created orphanages, schools and an large organisation to collect babies. Despite strong motivation and good will, the project soon drifted dramatically: the Tianjin massacre being the most famous example. The root of the problem was the status of women in China, causing families to prefer sons to daughters. This was also sustained by popular belief that children with physical anomalies should be eliminated. External events such as natural catastrophes would only reinforce it. While trying to hinder those behaviour, the missionaries had found obvious compensations, i. E. The justification for their presence in China and the possibility to buy land. With respect to Europe, the poor rate of conversion was hidden behind the nice figures of baptisms, and greater financial support could be requested in order to compete with the protestant rivals. Eventually, the orphans would create new Christian families, a long term influence in the villages and even a local clergy

Abstract:
The Middle English lyric, “Sir John Doth Play,” narrated in the female voice clearly depicts rape by a male authority figure and the narrator’s distress over her unplanned pregnancy, yet has been repeatedly interpreted and introduced by critics as a love song portraying the interaction of a seductive village priest and a gullible maiden. As such, the lyric provides a unique perspective on the patriarchal nature of the twentieth century and the value of critically re-examining literature rather than canonizing accepted interpretations of literary work.

Emery, Caroline. "Narrative patterns of illegitimacy and infanticide in the nineteenth-century novel." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2007. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/55709/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the relationship between illegitimacy and infanticide as it is negotiated and explored in predominately nineteenth-century texts. It discusses illegitimacy and infanticide not just as themes but also as engendering narrative patterns that are powerful within their own cultures and which change over time and may often reappear in different periods but shaped by new issues and attitudes. While the examination of patterns of illegitimacy and infanticide concentrates on a chronology that begins with Frances Burney's Evelina (1778) and Jane Austen's novels, discussion at times necessarily reaches back further to the eighteenth century where narratives of foundlings and of female sexual transgression are common, in order to provide an historical and literary context against which the impact of changes in social, legal and moral attitudes on literary and non-literary treatments of the consequences of sexual transgression may be judged. All the principal texts explored are written in English and published in Britain. Illegitimacy is a disruptive presence in Victorian fiction both in a real sense---the existence of illegitimate children in society represents a challenge to authority---and in a symbolic sense: illegitimacy can work as an effective metaphor for social exclusion and 'Otherness'. Cultural representations of illegitimacy and infanticide are subject to change over time and are not fixed absolutes. Examining this slippage, the multiple ways in which different eras construct illegitimacy and infanticide, often building on previous patterns, can offer an illuminating insight into prevailing anxieties. The narratives examined in this thesis reveal tensions and even contradictions in the conceptualization of illegitimacy and infanticide. It takes as one of its starting points an interrogation of the assumption in both literary and historical treatments that illegitimacy is a 'natural' antecedent of infanticide. The principal methodology of this thesis involves the use of close and sustained textual analysis to reveal narrative patterns as they relate to illegitimacy and infanticide. What a narrative pattern means for the purposes of this study involves not simply identifying an established template, such as the eighteenth-century foundling narrative, and examining its relevance and significance to nineteenth-century texts in which illegitimacy occurs. It might also be applied to elucidate narratives where neither literal illegitimacy nor literal infanticide ostensibly disrupt the dominant story. It is an argument of chapter one, for example, that Austen invokes the pattern of the exiled fallen woman and associations with seduction, exile and illegitimacy on the borders of the privileged dominant narrative in order to 'haunt' or refigure the foregrounded plot, and to suggest tragic possibilities that are, ultimately, eluded. Chapter two considers historical attitudes towards, and legislation for, illegitimacy. It argues that legislative provisions and their official justifications themselves express narrative patterns. It examines a range of historical sources, including texts associated with the 1834 Poor Law legislation, the records of the Coram Foundling Hospital, and accounts of infanticide trials held at the Old Bailey. Chapter three revisits the key narrative patterns identified in chapter one as the foundling narrative and the seduced maiden narrative, in its discussion of their later treatment in Ruth (1853) and Adam Bede (1859). It explores the use of the seduction narrative both in a disciplinary function and as a means to interrogate conservative social responses to illegitimacy. The final chapter deals with novels, which, in important respects diverge significantly from established narrative patterns. It shows novelists such as Wilkie Collins and Thomas Hardy explicitly questioning authoritative structures of law and morality, yet the approach here is one that assumes that it is also inevitable that other fictions will never be wholly monologic but will be found to debate, implicitly if not explicitly, rather than simply reflect, contemporary conditions and concerns.

Abstract:

VOCE, VALENTINA. "RIPENSARE PETER SINGER. LE APORIE DI UN'ETICA PRATICA." Doctoral thesis, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, 2022. http://hdl.handle.net/10280/111134.

Abstract:
The thesis takes into consideration the moral thought of Peter Singer, utilitarian philosopher who aims to give equal value to human and animal life, operating a Copernican revolution in the Western code of behavior. Following a monographic part, the main elements of Singer's ethical system were analyzed: the principle of equal consideration of interests and anti-specism. After an extensive description of these elements, a critical examination of them was carried out by opening a dialogue with authors of the international scene such as Bernard Williams and Mary Midgley. The last chapter is dedicated to the issue of involuntary euthanasia for those born with a disability, a practice that Singer considers legitimate on the basis of the utilitarian notion of quality of life. The final reflections focused on the functionalist concept of person assumed by Singer, for which only those who possess certain higher cognitive faculties can be called "person". On the basis of the considerations made, it was concluded that Singer's theories are not able to account for the complexity of human life, neither from an ontological nor from an ethical point of view, creating an approach that introduces significant ethical and social inequalities.

Rennes 2, 2011. http://tel.archives-ouvertes.fr/tel-00565331/fr/.

Abstract:
The killing of a child cannot be understood outside the bonds of kinship or moral codes in force in a given society. It will not, also, go without understanding the status and importance given to a child or the representation of the individual within a given community. To address the issue of infanticide (as an act morally and criminally wrong), it seemed essential to look at the entanglement of individual and social issues surrounding the act. Mauritius has been an example for our study in comparison with the phenomenon of infanticide which is on the increase. Our observations led us to conclude that infanticide seems to be – on an intrapsychic note - the effect of displacement for the mother, underpinned by the imperative "it's me or him"; in addition, the movement takes shape at a broader level as it could also concern the societal context. The killing of a child would therefore be something to seize control of as both an intimate and social regulation, underpinned by a shift of conflict issues. Mother’s positions around deaths of children would thus be understood as being in conformity with the implicit expectations of the local society and its "microspheres". The effectiveness of sanctions is discussed and in particular issues concerning denial of women imprisoned following the murder of their child. These themes lead us to address the difference between criminal liability and accountability issues and the need for satisfying accompaniment therapeutic purposes and accountability

Abstract:
European wild boars (Sus scrofa) are kept in Swedish enclosures for hunting and meat production purposes. The sows are known to undergo behavioural changes in connection with farrowing and their natural behaviours may be compromised by the limited area of the enclosure. The general aim of this thesis was to provide detailed quantitative data on wild boar sows when farrowing in captivity and to report whether possible needs can be compromised by the limitations of an enclosure. Specifically, it was aimed to provide a quantitative and functional account of the occurrence of infanticide, and its possible relations to welfare of confined wild boars. A field study was carried out in a hunting enclosure, where 1200 hours of behavioural recordings and data from 22 farrowings were collected. The farrowing period could be divided into three phases: pre-farrowing, isolation and sociality phases (in relation to farrowing: day -14 to -1, day 1 to 8, day 9 to 14 respectively). The activity decreased during isolation and increased in the sociality phase. The average distance to other individuals increased during isolation and decreased in the sociality phase. Habitat use changed towards more protective habitats after farrowing (Paper I). Non-maternal infanticide was documented in 14 out of 22 litters. Infanticide, typically performed by an older and larger sow than the mother, caused the deaths of all neonates in all but one affected litters. We found no effect of relatedness. A questionnaire sent to 112 owners of enclosures in Sweden and Finland resulted in 62 responses. Although the owners were often not able to provide exact figures on reproduction and mortality, nonmaternal infanticide was reported to be the most common cause of piglet mortality. The occurrence of infanticide was unrelated to size of enclosure and to variations in husbandry routines. All together results may suggest that non-maternal infanticide is part of the normal behavioural repertoire in wild boars (Paper II). The studies of this thesis reveals the farrowing period as the most dynamic and perhaps most challenging for wild boar sows in enclosures. There are serious welfare concerns in the husbandry of wild boars in Swedish enclosures. The most obvious welfare problem is non-maternal infanticide, where both sows and piglets are assumed to suffer, and where the outcome from the action must be considered unacceptable. If wild boar husbandry shall be equated with other animal husbandry in our society, it needs to be regulated to overcome many of the presented potential welfare problems in this thesis.
