Biosafety is an important issue globally, as a line of defence that protects health personnel, public and the environment from exposure to hazardous agents. Most developing nations have weak health systems and consequently weak biosafety. Engaging in an external quality program such as an accreditation process will help build capacity and competence in all areas. The Centre for Human Virology and Genomics (CHVG) laboratory of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, Lagos, Nigeria started its biosafety program in compliance to international standards stipulated by ISO 15189:2012, in its jou

The monitoring of the epizootic situation on helminthiasis of small ruminants was conducted in the foothill zone of Armenia, on the territory of the Joint RussianArmenian Scientific and Experimental Center of Zoology and Parasitology (JRASEC). The study was carried out on sheep of different age groups (young animals aged 1–2 years and adult sheep of 3 years and older). The endoparasite fauna was represented by 2 trematode genera: Fasciola (F. hepatica, F. gigantica), and Dicrocoelium (D. dendriticum); 5 nematode genera: Nematodirus (N. spathiger), Trichuris (T. ovis), Chabertia (C. ovina), Hae

Abstract:
Hepatitis E is an infection of the liver caused by the hepatitis E virus (HEV). HEV infection usually produces a mild disease, hepatitis E. However, disease symptoms can vary from no apparent symptoms to liver failure. There are 4 main types (genotypes) of the virus that cause concern in humans. Genotypes 1 and 2 infections are mainly restricted to humans but 3 and 4 can be identified in numerous other animal species including pigs. Transmission routes of HEV genotypes 3 and 4 have been identified to include the consumption of food products derived from infected animals and shellfish, and via

Abstract:
There is insufficient scientific evidence to know whether the presence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies confers protection from subsequent infections, and if so at what level. Antibodies are only one part of the immune response to infection. Tests that detect SARS-CoV-2 antibodies are available. They can determine whether someone has had COVID-19. Tests can reveal those who are unaware that they had COVID-19 because they had mild or no symptoms. Test samples must be analysed in a laboratory – no home tests are authorised for use in the UK. The Government provides antibody tests for NHS and social care

Abstract:
The objectives of this proposal were to enhance animal health by 1) development of a BTV serogroup diagnostic assay using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and 2) development of a BTV serotype specific diagnostic PCR assay. A PCR assay for diagnosis of bluetongue virus (BTV) serogroup from clinical samples meeting the criteria of objective 1 was developed. This PCR assay is more sensitive than virus isolation and has been adopted by both the U.S. and Israeli collaborating laboratories of this project, as well as at least one other U.S. laboratory for routine diagnosis of BTV infection in ruminan

Abstract:
We demonstrated the results of laboratory induced dengue virus infection more than 1 serotype in female Aedes aegypti through membrane feeding apparatus. Forty female mosquitoes were allowed to feed human blood contained 4 dengue serotypes at the concentration of 103 pfu/ml. One week after infection, dengue virus were detected by RT-PCR technique. Seven and two mosquitoes were positive for dengue serotype 3 and 4, respectively. Mix infection of dengue virus serotype 3 and 4 was found in 4 female mosquitoes. To determine the infectivity of dengue serotype 1 and 2, both serotypes were used to in

Abstract:
This question bank is a menu of qualitative questions related to healthcare workers’ knowledge, perceptions and practices during infectious disease outbreaks. The question bank will generate qualitative data on healthcare workers’ subjective understandings of risks, case management, protection and wider outbreak operations. These data can be used to inform risk communication and community engagement activities as well as other response pillars. Some of the issues covered in these questions are complex, for example stigma or views on vaccine safety. These topics may benefit from more in-depth f

Abstract:
Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a member of the Hepeviridae family capable of infecting humans producing a range of symptoms from mild disease to kidney failure. Epidemiological evidence suggests that hepatitis E genotype III and IV cases may be associated with the consumption of undercooked pork meat, offal and processed products such as sausages [1]. A study carried out by the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency (AHVLA), found hepatitis E virus contamination in the UK pork production chain and that 10% of a small sample of retail pork sausages were contaminated with the virus [2].
