Recent studies suggest potential cross-resistance between HDPs and the lipopeptide antibiotic, daptomycin (DAP). Isolates that exhibit DAP non-susceptible phenotypes may have virulence advantages and pose challenges to effective treatment. The current studies were performed to compare the efficacies and mechanisms of action of native and engineered HDPs vs. clinical S. aureus strain pairs which differed in susceptibility to daptomycin in vitro. Abstract:
Clostridium difficile is a leading healthcare-associated infection, which causes diarrhoea, and is almost exclusively precipitated by antibiotic exposure. Traditionally C. difficile infection (CDI) has been considered predominantly transmitted within hospitals. However, endemic spread hampers identification of the source of infections, and therefore control and prevention of disease. A cohort of consecutive hospital and community CDI cases in Oxfordshire from September 2007 to March 2011 was investigated. For each case hospital admission, ward movement and demographic data were available allow

Abstract:
HCV infects 170 million persons worldwide and is a serious global health problem. Genotype-3a is the dominant genotype in newly diagnosed infections within the UK and has a high response rate to interferon therapy, with up to 70% patients achieving a sustained virological response (SVR). The reason(s) for this are unknown; therefore the aim was to assess host and viral factors that determine treatment outcome of subtype-3a infection. Full-length subtype-3a viral sequence analysis identified 2 novel regions of hypervariability within E2 - HVR495 and HVR575, that are subject to positive selectio

Abstract:
Genetic and functional studies have demonstrated that KIR gene polymorphism, including different haplotypes, allelic polymorphisms and different expression levels of KIRs, may all play a part in the association with HIV-1 infection outcome. Currently, there are very few studies focusing on the association between KIR and HIV in the Chinese population. In this project, we started to look at the polymorphism of KIRs in a unique chronic HIV-1 infected cohort (SM cohort), evaluating the impact of KIR and KIR-HLA interactions in terms of HIV-1 infection progression. The SM cohort is unique because

Background and objectives: It has been argued that the binary framework frequently adopted to analyse test accuracy does not represent the clinical reality of diagnostic practice, and the recognition of an intermediate category of test result could make the utility of diagnostic tests more transparent. The objective of this thesis is to explore the value of moving away from the binary framework when evaluating and interpreting quantitative diagnostic tests. Methods: This thesis starts with an overview of the key arguments against dichotomising quantitative test results and a summ
