Full textInternationally educated nurses (IEN) face a variety of challenges throughout their integration journey into the nursing profession. The participation to an integration program influences their progress. The purpose of the research was to explore the experiences of IEN in their professional transition when implementing an integration program. The transitions theory of Meleis, Sawyer, Im, Messias, & Schumacher (2000) served as a guide for this research. Using a grounded theory approach described by Strauss and Corbin (2004), data were collected from 14 IEN, including 5 in individual interviews and 9 in group interviews. The results show that IEN experiment professional differences. Those related to nursing activities differ according to the IEN working place in the country of origin. In fact, IEN who have worked in hospitals move from the role of technical care executant to a health professional with diverse and autonomous activities. While community-based IEN are moving from diversified, self-sustaining activities to a role that is focused on nursing care. Other professional differences also emerged from the analysis and refer to the clinical context. The elements identified relate to the legislative framework, interpersonal verbal and nonverbal communication, the type of clientele, the health situations experienced by the clientele and the equipment used. Thereafter, personals conditions, conditions related to the integration program and community conditions influence the way the professional transition is lived by the IEN. The emerging theoretical model provides a deeper understanding of the professional transition of IEN and the relationships between each of the concepts during an integration program.

Vaillant, Julia. "Imbricated dynamics in times of fragile growth : individuals, families and household businesses in Madagascar, 1995-2005." Thesis, Paris 9, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012PA090068.
Full textIn developing countries, the complex interdependence of households, individuals and businesses makes the measurement of welfare dynamics challenging, especially over a long period, because economic activities are predominantly embedded in households. The context we have chosen, Madagascar between 1995 and 2005, is particularly interesting because it corresponds to an unprecedented period of growth interrupted only by a recession in 2002 due to a political crisis. Using urban, rural, cross-sectional and panel data, the three essays presented attempt to shed light on various aspects of welfare dynamics over a long period in Madagascar, with a special focus on the imbrication of productive activities, households and individuals. The first essay studies informal sector dynamics in Antananarivo with a special attention on its heterogeneous nature. The second measures the extent of the gender performance gap among informal entrepreneurs and explores the existence of gender-differentiated effects of sharing norms and the allocation of tasks within the household on the technical efficiency of enterprises. Finally, the third essay is a methodological contribution on the relevance of tracking movers in panel data collection in rural areas. Studying microenterprises within their family and social environment is necessary to fully grasp the constraints on productive activities. More research is necessary on the behavior and economic rationality of urban households. The lack of panel data on informal businesses limits what can be said on their demography, especially over a long period. There is a pressing need for innovative data collection devices which follow these production units over time

Full textThis doctoral thesis comes within the field of industrial relations. It seeks to analyze the relationship between the financialization of economies, union bargaining power and job quality. It presents a comparative analysis in thirteen OECD countries over a period of twenty-seven years [1990-2017]. The aim of this research is to understand the extent to which the financialization of OECD economies changes the union bargaining power and thus the job quality. At the theoretical level, we have mobilized the concepts of regulation theory. Empirically, the research uses a quantitative method based on dynamic panel data models. The initial hypothesis is that the process of financialization and, in particular, the rise of institutional investors as a main component of new financial systems have changed not only the dynamism of labor markets and employment relationship, but also the job quality and the power relationship between the negotiating parties. This thesis then proposes synthetic multidimensional indicators of union bargaining power and job quality. Union bargaining power is aggregated into two powers: the economic union bargaining power and the political union bargaining power. Our main results show that, overall, the rise of institutional investors weakens union bargaining power and reduces job quality. However, the results are mixed if we compare groups of countries belonging to three types of capitalism: market-based capitalism, family capitalism and socialdemocratic capitalism. The results are also mixed regarding the impact of estimated union bargaining power on job quality. Estimated union bargaining power, weakened by the rise of institutional investors, does not always reduce job quality. Moreover, the results of the causality tests show that, overall, union bargaining power is related to the institutional investor’s indicator variables. In other words, the rise of institutional investors and the deregulation and liberalization of financial markets have led to a weakening of union bargaining power. Thus, weak union bargaining power can lead to a deterioration in the job quality. The causal link between union bargaining power and job quality is bidirectional. More specifically, a weakening of bargaining power deteriorates job quality, and poor job quality further weakens union bargaining power.
