Abstract:
From early in his life Friedrich Nietzsche had a deep and abiding concern for the state of educational practices and cultural development because he felt that the educational system lacked the necessary structure and philosophy to facilitate what he called true culture. His studies of the ancient Greeks led him to an understanding of the importance of the agonistic nature of culture and reality. In the development of his larger philosophical project he saw this knowledge of antiquity as the means for developing contemporary culture and education. In this thesis I argue that Erhard Weigel, professor of mathematics at the University of Jena in the 17th century, had a significant impact on the development of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz's philosophy of mathematics. Unlike the generally accepted idea that Weigel's influence lasted only until Leibniz's Parisian stay, it can be proved that they exchanged ideas throughout their lives. In the early years, Weigel influenced Leibniz with his syncretistic interpretation of Hobbes' philosophy and in the revaluation of Euclid's Elements and Aristotle's logic. Full text
Abstract:
The search for happiness is a vital theme in George Eliot's fiction. Eliot's treatment of this theme owes much to nineteenth-century utilitarianism, which stemmed from Jeremy Bentham's "greatest happiness principle," and the religious demythologization of the German philosopher Ludwig Feuerbach, who interpreted Christianity in terms of human consciousness. In 1854, Eliot translated Feuerbach's Das Wesen des Christenthums, in which Feuerbach describes the components of man's being as feeling, thinking, and willing. George Eliot saw an opposition between utilitarianism and Feuerbach's humanism.

This doctoral dissertation studies the relationship between the development of Merton's view of contemplation and Merton's extensive interest in and writings on Zen and classical Taoism. It aims to show that Merton's later view of contemplation is influenced by his appropriation of the teachings of Zen-Taoism. The opening chapter of the dissertation explores the origin, the extent, and the reasons for Merton's interest in Zen and classical Taoism. It explains how Merton's interest in Zen-Taoism grew enormously in the mid 1950s. Zen-Taoism became one of his chief areas of interest between 1959

The thesis argues for the pertinence of the Kantian 'topography' of the mental faculties and the power of critical thought in assessing the philosophical importance of Georges Bataille' s writing. Such an argument runs counter to the received tradition of interpretation of Bataille's work, which has, given the influence of Derrida, construed these texts as works of phenomenological philosophy. The thesis shows that Derrida's interpretation must, by virtue of its exclusivity, be incorrect. Experience of teaching in France in the late 1950s led to an awareness of excellent methods and resources for religious education. My dissertation focuses on the moral philosophy of Descartes, Pascal, and Spinoza in the context of the revival of Stoicism within the seventeenth century. There are many misinterpretations about early modern ethical theories due to a lack of proper awareness of Stoicism in the early modern period.
