Children in low-income and ethnic minority families are more likely to be in poor health, which may impact physical and economic well-being in adulthood. This study explored how maternal depression and parenting efficacy were associated with child health outcomes in a sample of low-income African American and Latino families. From both social justice and feminist perspectives, laws requiring equal pay should provide just income for females as compared to males. Mexican Americans, the largest Hispanic subgroup in the United States, tend to underuse mental health services. Grounded in Andersen's behavioral model of health services use, the purpose of this nonexperimental study was to examine the likelihood of birth country, education, income, and insurance predicting which respondents would report seeking mental health services to treat depression. The Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview was used to diagnose depression in 203 Mexican Americans whose data was archived from the primary study. Oral vaccines have consistently underperformed in the low-income countries where they are needed most. This has formed a potent obstacle to several public health initiatives that rely on such vaccines, including the polio eradication endgame. This thesis examines the hypothesis that the composition of the intestinal microbiota – including both pathogenic and commensal microbes – contributes to the impaired performance of oral vaccines in low-income countries.
