Abstract:
Despite the current interest in food studies, little is known about the culinary history of Central and Southern Africa. Using the methods of historical-comparative linguistics, this dissertation provides the first insights into the culinary traditions of early Bantu speech communities. The dissertation focuses on the history of staple starch food preparations, more specifically, the history of porridge and the integration of cassava into Kongo culinary traditions.<br>Doctorat en Langues et lettres<br>info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Palatalization in Southern Bantu languages presents a number of challenges to phonological theory. Unlike 'canonical' palatalization, the process generally affects labial consonants rather than coronals or dorsals. It applies in the absence of an obvious palatalizing trigger and it can apply non-locally, affecting labials that are some distance from the palatalizing suffix. The process has been variously treated as morphologically triggered (e.g. Herbert 1977, 1990) or phonologically triggered (e.g. Cole 1992). It then proposes a four-way distinction among applicative constructions, relevant at least to Bantu, a large family of languages spoken in Sub-Saharan Africa. Because of the gradual nature of historical change, differences among construction types may be somewhat graded. In what are called Type A applicative constructions, the applicative morpheme expands the argument structure of its root by introducing an obligatorily present applied phrase. This ex

Thesis (DLitt (African Languages))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: It has been observed in human interaction within our social milieu that individuals make attempts from time to time to influence others in order to accomplish their goals. The scholarly interest in the message-production side of this phenomenon has assumed the study of compliance gaining or persuasion (Wilson 2002; Dillard 2004). According to Wilson (2002:15), “contemporary theories of persuasive message production are guided by a metaphor of ‘goal pursuit’” .This study pursues this proposition by f

Abstract:
There is a large body of research dealing with the question of the influence of the mother tongue on a foreign language being learnt, but relatively little which addresses cross-linguistic influence between two foreign languages. This thesis deals with this issue, examining specifically Spanish and Portuguese. The findings suggest that such influence does indeed occur, but not across the board. This study involved two features, clitic pronouns, and verbs of existence, thus comparing a more syntactic type of structure with a more semantic type of structure. Two different types of task were used

In this thesis, we explore the impact of M-BERT and different transfer sizes on the choice of different transfer languages in dependency parsing. In order to investigate our research questions, we conduct a series of experiments on the treebanks in Universal Dependencies with UUParser.     The main conclusions and contributions of this study are as follows:   First, we train a variety of languages in several different scripts with M-BERT being added into the parsing framework, which is one of the most state-of-the-art deep learning models based on the Transformer architecture. Abstract:
This paper is dedicated to the investigation of receptive transfer with a special focus on the comprehension of spoken utterances in nonfamiliar Slavic languages. It investigates the possibility of applying the concept of passive multilingualism to the field of Slavic languages. It is often assumed that closely related languages provide ideal conditions for mutual intelligibility. By means of positive transfer from a previously known language of the group, one can achieve a certain degree of passive knowledge in related languages, even if these have never been learned consciously.
