Full textNature has indisputable effects on human health (Moore, 1981; Ulrich, 1984). The very first research works on this topic were inspired by traditional Japanese medicine. Indeed, at that time, “forest baths” were typically prescribed to patients, in order both to strengthen their immune system and to improve their well-being (Li, 2010). Interestingly, subsequent researches have demonstrated that solely a visual exposure to Nature was able to produce the same effects (Beukeboom, Langeveld, & Tanja-Dijkstra, 2012). To explain this impact of Nature on human health, both biophilia (Ulrich, 1993; Wilson, 1984) and the attention restoration theory (R. Kaplan & Kaplan, 1989; S. Kaplan, 1995) are the two main trends nowadays used by the scientific community. Nevertheless, none of these experiments were carried out in France, while it is clearly established that country’s culture has a significant influence on this Nature effect (Pascual et al., 2012). Moreover, it is relevant to note that up to now all the researches were only performed under both green Nature exposure and mild weather conditions. With the aim of starting to decipher more precisely the influence of the presence of a Nature component on human health and prosocial behavior, this present thesis describes eight experiments carried out in France, with several kinds of Nature exposures and Nature scenes. Results highlight the positive effects of Nature, whatever its type, i.e. green or not, in mild weather or not, with or without aquatic component, etc. Furthermore, this work brings to light than an olfactory stimulation (i.e. using fragrances of Nature) generates similar effects compared to a visual one. Altogether, the results appear to be closely related to the perceived control (freedom)

Full textThis thesis takes place in the resonance model framework (Myers & O’Brien, 1998) that assumes a fast acting, passive resonance process as a basic mechanism for retrieving prior information. In 4 studies, we used the inconsistency detection paradigm (Albrecht and Myers, 1993) in order to investigate the impact of the nature of the contextual overlap on the reinstatement of information concerning the goal of a character. Results of experiment 1 indicated a significant effect of the nature of the overlap, but no inconsistency effect. These unexpected results were replicated in experiment 1b. Several potential explanations were investigated. Particularly, we tested the possibilities of an integration difficulty (experiment 2) and in terms of distance in the surface structure (experiment 3). Globally, results highlight 1) the dumb characteristic of the resonance process and 2) the importance of the temporo-causal structure of the text in the manipulation of the overlap

Full textThe prediction of the time-dependent deformations, particularly in the case of high performance concrete (HPC) envisioned for bridges is essential for predicting the deflections, the stress distribution in statically indeterminate structures and the loss of pre-stressing force in elements of pre-stressed concrete. However, the experience shows a certain dispersion of values of instantaneous and delayed deformations measured and some significant differences with the values calculated using the building codes. The objective of the present thesis work focuses on the coarse aggregate parameter which is not taken into account in building codes, which could causes the inaccuracies of their predictions. The experimental program includes a comparative study of the mechanical behaviours (instantaneous and delayed), shrinkage, creep, of six HPC with the same basic formulation (water cement ratio, volume of paste), differing principally in the type of coarse aggregate. From this database and thanks to the mechanical and physicochemical analyses of the aggregates, some influent parameters related to the type of the coarse aggregate were detected. The comparisons with estimations of standard models such as Eurocode 2 were also performed and showed significant differences with the experimental values.Micro-structural analyses were carried out in order to identify the state of the microstructure and the porosity of materials, more particularly at the interface between the cement paste and the coarse aggregate (Interfacial Transition Zones ITZ). The study of the results made it possible to establish correlations between the mechanical behaviour and the micro-structural analyses. A synthesis of the data collected during this research work shows that the coarse aggregate has a considerable influence on the mechanical behaviours (instantaneous and delayed) through various parameters from variable degree of influence

Full textFibrin clot formation is one of the major processes leading to blood clotting. It involves the polymerization of fibrin monomers into a network of fibrin fibres. This network controls the mechanical properties of the clot and serves as a skeleton for wound healing. Environmental factors (pH, concentration, …) have been proved to influence polymerization, however the role of fibrinogen composition on the structure of fibrin remains unexplored. This aspect might be important for the case of cardiovascular pathologies, which present abnormal fibrin structures. We have determined the relation between different sources of fibrinogen with the nano- and micro-metric structural and mechanical properties of fibrin clots. The composition in co-purified proteins of the fibrinogens has no significant importance, however the polydispersity profile controls the multiscale properties of fibrin. Indeed, x-ray scattering, multi-wavelength spectrophotometry and confocal microscopy measurements have proved that fibres from monodisperse fibrinogens are quasi-crystalline, straight and rigid. Fibres from polydisperse fibrinogens are less organised, curbed and less rigid. Finally, the mechanical properties of fibrin showed that the response of clots to deformation, as well as the scenarios of rupture are closely related to the structure, and consequently related to the profiles of polydispersity. This opens outstanding perspectives in many fields such the optimisation of fibrinogen’s use on dysfibrinogenemias or haemorrhages, tissue regeneration or the understanding between the abnormal structure of clots and cardiovascular diseases

Full textSvalbarðstunga is a historic and official region that spans the territory between the Svalbarðsá and Sandárivers (northeastern Iceland). The principal farm of the region is known as Svalbarð’s farm. It is located downstream of the Svalbarðstunga watershed and has been a functioning farm for over 1000 years. Many secondary farms were established in the regiona as satellites of Svalbarð’s farm. The majority of this farms site was abandoned at various times, but the reasons for that are still unknow. Natural factors (e.g.,climate change, volcanism) and/or human factors (e.g., land degradation from overgrazing, epidemics) were the most likely causes of abandonment. The principal goal of this research is to document the impact of climate change and human activities on the environment in Svalbarðstunga. To achieve this aim, we studied the sedimentary record in a pond and in a wetland situated near the ruins of the ancient farms. The research includes the study of macrofossils, diatoms, geochemicals and sedimentary analysis. The wetland in the study was established soon after deglaciation, by 9190 years cal. BP. The local conditions were rich minerotrophicat that time. Subsequently, the site became relatively dry, but wet conditions were re-established by 470 years cal. BP. On the other hand, the pond in the study shows evidence of major perturbations between 1000 and 1350 AD such as deposition of a non-decayed peat level in a sedimentary sequence formed by gyttja. Taking into account the location of the study site, the practice of livestock breeding (mainly sheep) would have destabilized the land on the wathersed due to the overgrazing of the fluvioglacial and glacial deposits knolls that surround the pond. This process would have caused significant sedimentary accumulation in the pond.

Full textDynamic mechanical analysis is used to highlight epoxy-anhydride matrix/glass fibres interfaces or interphase in unidirectional composites. Glass fibres have been sized from aqueous emulsions made of several polymer coating and only one silane coupling agent (y-Amino propyltriethoxysilane). The viscoelastic characteristics of sizing are separately achieved first on films analysis obtained from dried emulsions ; then on sized fibres, and lastly on a plane model composed of sized glass plates which simulate sized fibres. Plane model of unidirectional composite is done and bas shown that the structure. Around the fibre and in the bulk matrix are different. More over through this modelling, reactions between matrix and sizing can occur in some cases. Then we have tried to correlate static and dynamic mechanical properties of unidirectional composites

Full textIn a context of decreasing pollutant emissions, the transport sector is facing an improvement of engine concept as well as a fuel diversification. The use of these different fuels often involves an impact on the combustion performance itself. In the case of Spark ignition engine, the efficiency is a function of the released heat, image of the combustion speed, i.e. the flame front speed consuming the air-fuel mixture. It is well known that every expanding flame is submitted to flame curvature and strain rate which are both contributors to flame stretch. As the answer of each air-fuel mixture (i.e. the fuel itself, the equivalence ratio, the dilution …) is different to flame stretch, the objective of this work is to understand flame stretch impact on fuel performance in Spark-Ignition engines. To achieve this goal, different fuel-air mixtures with similar unstretched laminar burning speed and thermodynamic properties but different responses to stretch were selected. Those mixtures were then studied with different experimental devices with different measurement techniques: single-cylinder metallic and optical engines, turbulent combustion spherical vessel. Results show that flame stretch sensitivity properties such as Markstein length and Lewis number, determined in laminar combustion regime, are relevant parameters to describe the flame propagation in turbulent combustion as in the combustion chamber of the Spark-Ignition engine and need to be taken into consideration to evaluate global performance of these fuels, experimentally and also in modeling simulation

Full textThe objective of this work is to document the effect of the temperature on the chloride diffusion through cement-based materials. The chloride diffusion coefficient, the penetration profiles and the chloride interactions with the solid phase were highlighted. The materials were CEM I and CEM V/A mortars and pastes. They were cured in wet room (21 ± 2 °C, 90% relative humidity) for 1 month in the case of CEM I and 3 months in the case of CEM V before the experiments started. The temperature levels were 5, 21, 35 and 80 ºC. In addition, microstructure analyses were carried on using X-rays diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) techniques. The experimental results were then used to continue to develop the numerical code, MsDiff, developed in our research group. A good agreement between the numerical concentration profiles and the experimental ones was found

Full textIn La Réunion, outdoor activities are at the core of environmental issues. Increasingly, these activities are presented as passionate practice. According to the kind of passion, engagement in the activity is different and the degree of opening to nature and environment would be impacted. Therefore, passion could be a key factor in pro-environmentalism development following outdoor activities practice. The objective of this thesis is to study the role of passion for outdoor activity on nature affiliation and conflict toward environmental protection and their influence on environmental motivation, while emphasizing the role of emotions and place attachment as mediators

Full textSeveral studies have shown that an activation of motors (approach-avoidance behaviors, Cretenet & Dru 2004) or spatial cues (vertical or horizontal, Casasanto, 2009) is likely to influence the affective judgment or the final responses. In regards of the theories of embodiment, this studies examine the effect of combined (synchronous or asynchronous) motor and spatial cues on mathematical reasoning as revealing cognitive processes. In this perspective, our work, presented in two articles, with the aim to analyze the effect of these activations, involving the theory of polarity correspondence (Proctor & Cho, 2006), on the resolution of arithmetic operations, as the expression of a particular cognitive functioning. Furthermore, this thesis supports the idea that this operation has some analogy with the polarity correspondence effect (PCE). Indeed, our work supports the idea that whatever the activated conceptual cues are (motivational or emotional), the same effects are observed - a similar system is activated, coded as polarities which might be indicative of the PCE. When the activation of polarity indices (motivational or emotional), a phenomenon of compatibility occurs that also influences mathematical reasoning. We investigate the effect of a motor (performed) or spatial (perceived) movement combining two spatial dimensions (laterality and verticality) simultaneously or not on numerical performance. The objective is to investigate the influence of congruence or noncongruence conditions on the resolution of arithmetic operations. When a synchronous activation of peripheral cues (motor or spatial) is activated, we would observed an effect on mathematical reasoning, such as multiplication (Article 1); while when an asynchronous activation, deferred in time and space, of spatial cues would influence a mathematical reasonning, such as addition (Article 2). For the first time, studies demonstrate how a particular combination of perceptual or motor activations reveals some correspondent cognitive mechanism

Full textFor several years, membrane bioreactor for urban wastewater treatment has been booming. Nevertheless some issues still slow down its expansion. This work tries to answer some of the brakes to its progression. First one concerns the choice of the suitable sludge adge which guarantee maximal removal rates of ammonium and organic matter, by an active biomasse where fouling is limited and slude production low. 50 days is fulling all the criteria. An other concern is about the lack of data allowing extrapolation from laboratory to wastewater treatment plant. One key step is to detremine the impact of influent nature (synthetic or real) on process results and fouling. Use of recent fluorescence method allows determining the implication of proteins and humic substances-like from soluble extra polymeric substances on fouling

Full textThis work is a contribution to the improvement of the thermal design of horizontal tubes bundle with plain and enhanced tubes. This work is based on an experimental investigation with typical operating conditions of such equipment; three hydrocarbons (n-pentane; propane and iso-butane) with low mass flux and different pressure have been tested in boiling conditions on plain tubes. An experimental investigation using enhanced tubes has been done with iso-butane. The use of local measurements (void fraction and temperature) has lead the development of correlations for prediction of void fraction, friction pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient. A flow regime map has been established from the void fraction signal analysis obtained with plain tubes; it allowed a better understanding of heat transfer mechanisms. The experiments showed distinct improvements of the heat transfer to a factor of 3 with enhanced tubes compared to the smooth tubes

Full textThe design of appropriate ligands (tectons) and the generation of networks in the presence of transition metal have been successful by using the principles of supramolecular chemistry and molecular tectonics. The self-assembly of the designed ligands with various metal salts made it possible to obtain a range of crystalline materials having finite or infinite dimensionality. These architectures were characterized by X-ray diffraction studies. In the first part, ligands bearing pyridine coordinating group and based on polyethylenethioglycol backbone, were found generate in discrete entities. The differences with previous results leading to made infinite networks with similar ligands are discussed. Using ligands based on rigid spacers and bearing pyridine as coordinated group, we showed that it is possible to control the dimensionality of self-assembled architectures by judicious choice of the metal-ligand couple. The opportunity to predict the networks topology by using rigid tecton is discussed. Finally, we synthesized a last family of tris-monodentates semi-rigid tectons which allowed to obtain many networks with silver salts. We have demonstrated that the relative flexibility of tectons allowed a great topology's diversity influenced by the counter-ion. We have synthesized twenty new tectons and we showed that the combinaison metal-counter-ion has a heavy impact on topology
