Abstract:In January 2012 a broad spectrum of popular groups staged an unprecedented protest against the removal of what has been termed a “subsidy” on fuel prices by the Nigerian government. The participation of tailors in this national political event suggests that self-employed artisans were prepared to transcend their narrow nonpolitical agenda to promote their interests and demands for decent social and economic conditions. Interviews with participating organization representatives in Lagos indicate the supportive role of alliances with labor unions and organized informal workers at large.

The ongoing digital transformation is changing work processes and production environments. Particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the European textile industry are confronted with numerous related challenges. Among these, demand-oriented development and efficient use of employee competences are becoming ever more important for success. New decentralized and situationally adaptable solutions that enable self-organized learning paths and informal competency development are becoming a necessity for the participants in production processes to acquire the essential competences. Approaches to support self-organized learning paths and dynamic, role- and actor-based models for collaborative knowledge generation already exist and have proven especially worthwhile in the SME environment of the textile industry and its innovation processes. This paper presents challenges of collaborative competence development and approaches to solve them on different levels of the organization. In addition, it explains specific implementations based on project examples from the textile industry and outlines needs for further research.

Karnataka's capital, Bengaluru, is one of the fastest growing garment-producing hubs in the country. Feminization in Bengaluru's garment industry began in the late 1980s, and the phenomenon has been explained in the chapter. There is also a gender-wage gap, with women being paid less for the same work designation as men. The chapter also highlights the skill gaps in the various skill development programs run by the Government of India. Recently, migrant workers from long distant states are drawn to Bengaluru's garment industry. These workers are mostly women who are skilled and recruited through the Government of India's program like Gram Tarang, which is sponsored under Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushal Yojna (DDUGKY). The chapter documents the narratives of the city's garment workers. The chapter looks at the skill perspective from gender lens and compares it with the condition of the textile industry in the colonial period. Instances of informal employment industry in the industry have also been located, and linkages with skill development have been drawn.

A multi-faceted assignment in a course, Feminist Perspectives of Craft, guided students to investigate the thesis that global warming and climate change are feminist concerns using research, debate, studio inquiry and critique. After team debates, students created individual art pieces; the criteria were that the piece must articulate some aspect of the implications of climate change, human interaction with and responsibility for the environment, and include one or more aspects of the textile techniques that we were exploring in class. Living in a New England coastal community built upon fiber craft, textile and seafaring industry, these elements guided visual art exploration and lesson planning questioning how human interaction with the environment sustains the economy and how societies, in turn, must sustain our earth that provides for the community. Critiques of process and final artwork informed lesson planning about how decisions have far reaching impact extending to the global community.

The Rana Plaza Collapse in 2013 in Dhaka, Bangladesh offers lessons in the garment industry on ethics, corporate leadership, and corporate social responsibility crisis. Given the circumstances of 1,134 workers deceased from its factory collapse in 2013, this chapter aims to inform the response in CSR Crisis in the garment sector of three major fast fashion companies. It also positions the most current labour standards in the ready-made garment industry in Bangladesh. This chapter draws on literature in management and economics on informing the connections in labour and industrial growth. The chapter aims to shed light on other alternatives fashion companies can take in supporting ethical responses and practices in supply chain management. It then offers a variety of business/human rights recommendations in public policy for the Republic of Bangladesh.
