El presente artículo consiste en un estudio semiótico de la pintura costarricense de la década de los setenta de siglo XX, sobre el proceso de finalización de la pintura no-figurativa, concretamente el informalismo de la artista Lola Fernández presente en su obra Supervivencia (1971). Informalism comprises the theories that frame the law produced by international organizations in shades of normativity: member states and international organizations are integrated in heterarchical relationships primarily governed by politics; the law created by international organizations belongs to hybrid legal systems; the institutional veil is characterized by degrees of transparency depending on the internal relation of power; the conduct of a member state acting in the institutional forum is alternatively relevant or not relevant as a matter of international law, depending on the internal relation of power. This chapter describes the historical roots of this conceptualization and elaborates why under this perspective the rules of the organizations are considered as a matter of degrees of legality. Afterwards, it describes the flaws of this theory focusing on the law of the international civil service and on global administrative law.

Chapter 2 examines how, in the context of this imperfect panorama, Informalism represented the visual manifestation of a growing discontent with the economic conditions that spurned the “make-believe” at the core of the diatribes of the Venezuelan anthropologist Fernando Coronil and the telenovela pioneer turned political commentator José Ignacio Cabrujas. In the late eighties, they had observed that with the professionalization of the oil industry in earlier decades the wealth that it generated attained chimerical qualities in Venezuela. Such rapid development that obscured the realities of a largely agrarian nation whose modernization was artificially fed by petrodollars. Here, I borrow from GeorgesBataille’s treatises on ritualistic expenditure and his argument that economic wealth and growth governed the physical force field of all organic phenomena. I propose that by the early sixties Venezuela’s unspent energetic surplus had begun to unleash a destructive process from popular segments of the population that, it may be argued, is climaxing in present-day Chavismo. Bataille’s thinking revealed the paradox of utility, or life “beyond [the realm] of utility” as he described it: its ultimate end could only be uselessness as sovereignty was achieved only by those who consumed but did not labor.

Geometry and architecture both have a long trajectory in the history of western thought. Geometry offers the possibility to interpret the physical structure of the world and to develop rational thinking, while architecture provides the capacity to transform the physical substance and meaning of our surroundings. Diverse developments in the field of geometric representation have determined the characteristics of architectural space: from the modulated rigour of Classicism and the birth of Euclidean geometry, to contemporary informalism with the incorporation of digital mathematical calculation and intense questioning and reconsideration of traditional Cartesian space. The two-dimensional constant and dynamic projection of a three-dimensional spatial situation has been upheld since the time of simple spatial-temporal allegories of the architectural project up until the new developments with unconventional instrumental resources, generating innovative structural, formal, spatial and technological solutions.

Abstract:
In chapter 1, Frank traces the development of Noé, de la Vega, Macció, and Deira before the group formed, discussing examples of their work against the backdrop of the Buenos Aires art world and contemporary events. Each of the artists’ first expressionist works responded to the rise of Informalism in painting as practiced by Alberto Greco and others. They also responded in various ways to disillusionment with the presidency of Arturo Frondizi, to political violence, and to tensions surrounding the survival of the prohibited movement of Juan Perón. Frank focuses particularly on Noé’s Serie Federal (Federal Series) (1960-61), which purported to illustrate violent episodes in the country's past. Frank considers Noé's exhibition of these works and explains how the novelist Ernesto Sábato came to use one of them for the cover of his novel Sobre héroes y tumbas.

Abstract:
The introductory chapter presents the relevance of the topic in the framework of the practice of international organizations and existing legal scholarship. In particular, it describes how scholars and practitioners do not share a common understanding of what an international organization is and the consequences of this absence of agreement. The main claim is that in order to conceptualize international organizations we have to look at the characteristics of the legal systems they develop and the legal nature of their rules. Four main theses are presented: functionalism (international nature), constitutionalism (internal nature), exceptionalism (only some organizations develop internal rules), and informalism (only some rules have an internal nature). Finally, it sets up the aim of the book: to analyse different conceptualizations, to assess the existence of a general regulatory framework, and to provide a definition of the concept of an international organization in international law.
