Abstract:
In the era of industry 4.0, especially in the agricultural sector, using ICT as a communication and information-gathering medium for farmers is crucial. However, the ICT adoption level by smallholder farmers varies greatly. This study investigates the elements influencing the ICT adoption level and utilization and explores the application of the TAM to smallholder farmers. Using descriptive quantitative methodology on three villages in Ngawi regency, East Java (N=53), this study indicated that smartphone usage in the research location was extremely high at 90.5%. A Spearman correlation value of 0.24 indicates a relationship between the PU and the education level of farmers. T-Test Two Means Independent was used to compare respondents' perception of ICT utilization through Perceived Use (PU) and Perceived Ease of Use (PEU); PU's average value of 17.5 was greater than PEU's average value of 13.9. It was determined that ICT perceived usefulness was felt more important than perceived ease of use by the respondents in their daily activities. Additionally, this study recommends that agriculture services development necessitates strategies to create ICT usefulness through smartphones. Such strategies will help increase the ICT effective adoption, reducing information gaps and raising the wealth of smallholder farmers.

Abstract:
This study aims to evaluate the utilization pattern of ICT services by Bangladeshi microfinance institutions (MFIs). In so doing, this exploratory study interviews the staff of 10 prominent MFIs to underscore the ICT usage pattern of the organizations. The questions focused on the usage pattern of seven aspects of digital services such as website, ATM, e-cards and mobile financial services (MFS), smartphone use, MIS, customized software for different departments, and electronic mail and file management system. The results reveal that all the organizations maintain websites and use smartphones for internal and external communications, while none incorporated the services of ATM, debit, or credit cards. Moreover, it finds that only 20 percent of the MFIs included MFS to facilitate transactions and an identical proportion of institutions have electronic mail and e-file management services for their office management. It also claims that employing management information systems (MIS) and using customized software accounts for 20% and 40%, respectively. Therefore, policymakers and microfinance organization should take the necessary steps to foster the use of digital services in the business process so that costs can be minimized to attain the principles of outreach and sustainability.

Abstract:
Abstract Population aging is accompanied by an increase in chronic diseases such as cancer. Colon cancer is the third most common cancer and a leading cause of cancer death. Screening tests can aid early detection and treatment. It is unclear how information and communication technology (ICT), especially media through mobile devices, influences cancer screening. This study analyzes the relationship between ICT usage and colon cancer screening among U.S. adults. Data are from the second cycle of the Health Information National Trend Survey 5. Cancer screening included having one of the following: colonoscopy, sigmoidoscopy and/or stool blood test to check for colon cancer. Approximately 70% of respondents had at least some college education, 51% were female, and the mean age was 48 years. More than half of respondents report using apps on a tablet or smartphone for health and wellness purposes, and around 70% of them used apps for health communication and decision-making. Based on results of a binary logistic regression model, people who use mobile apps for discussions with health care providers (p<0.01), who use the internet to look for information about cancer (p <0.01), and who do not use mobile apps to make decisions about how to treat an illness or condition (p<0.01) are more likely to conduct cancer screening. ICT usage may enable people to gather information about cancer screening and improve patient and physician communication. Future studies should explore longitudinal associations between ICT usage, cancer screening, and cancer outcomes.

Abstract:
Digital technology is crucial in advancing digital agriculture by enabling farmers to access valuable information such as planting schedules, pest and disease management, and market price trends. Despite its potential, the use of ICT by farmers remains limited due to inadequate internet access. In 2018, only about 25.7% of farmers in Indonesia had internet connectivity. Given this situation, it is essential to investigate the efficiency of ICT utilization among farmers, particularly in the Kebumen Regency. This research aims to understand farmers' perceptions of ICT usage and identify the diversity of ICT access at the farmer level. The study involved 90 rice farmers in Kebumen Regency. Access to ICT tools in this research refers to smartphones, computers, and laptops. Farmers' perceptions of ICT usage were assessed using a four-point Likert scale with the following options: strongly agree, agree, disagree, and strongly disagree. The development of the survey statements was guided by the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) theory, which identifies two key factors influencing technology adoption: Perceived Usefulness (PU) and Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU). The findings reveal that smartphones are the most widely used among the various ICT tools available to farmers. The study also indicates that farmers generally perceive the usefulness (PU) and ease of use (PEOU) of ICT tools. Based on these results, future agricultural extension strategies should prioritize the development of applications that are easily accessible via smartphones.

Abstract:
With the considerable growth in the information and communication technology (ICT), several smartphone-based mobility platforms have already sprung up and they have the potential of transforming the mobility ecosystem completely. However, there is close to no knowledge available about how ICT-based smartphone apps meant for day-to-day trip planning tasks are being used across various user groups and how they influence travel outcomes, especially in Indian cities. Therefore, this study is an effort to close this gap by gathering data from the city of Bhopal and carrying out an exploratory statistical analysis on the usage of smartphone apps for different types of trip planning purposes, as well as their influence on travel outcomes. The study provides empirical evidence of relationships between smartphone app usage for trip planning (such as departure time, destination selection, mode selection, route selection, communicating and coordinating trips, and performing tasks online rather than visiting) and the resulting travel outcomes, such as kilometres travelled by vehicle (for purposes, such as work/education, shopping, and recreation), social gatherings, new destinations, and group trips. The chi-square test has been used to test and interpret several socioeconomic variables that could influence this relationship, such as gender, age, income, etc. The study’s findings provide important behavioural insights that may be useful in policy discussions.

Abstract:
Information and communications technology (ICT) is a useful tool in the modern world, becoming indispensable, particularly in the educational setting. With this, the researchers looked into the ICT access of the faculty in colleges and universities in Central Visayas, Philippines. This access was measured through Faculty’s ICT Access (FICTA), administered through online surveys. Study findings revealed that faculty had physical access to ICT, evidenced by their acquisition of laptop computers, smartphones, Internet connections, and office suite software. Moreover, teachers were highly motivated to use ICT and highly skilled to operate, search, and strategize online. They also had high usage of ICT in their general and instructional work. Furthermore, motivation, skills, and usage access were significantly associated with one another. In conclusion, teachers have access to ICT which made their teaching better. Better digital infrastructure, more capability training, and encouraged utilization of ICT are recommended at the higher educational level in the country.

Abstract:
Today's workplace is strongly influenced by digital information and communication technologies (ICT). Remote work raises new demands regarding employees’ availability as well as work engagement and requires new rules. However, how social practices regulate smartphone use in organisations has seldom been investigated. This paper explores the use of smartphone technology in organisations and how to implement formal rules. The analysis of 12 qualitative in-depth interviews with employees in a profit-oriented and a public service organisation confirms and enriches the types of usage as suggested by Orlikowski’s work on information technologies in organisations. In addition, we suggest reframing the non-enactment of smartphone technology as a constructive practice of ensuring productivity and employee well-being instead of being caused by a lack of technical know-how, or fear of losing power. In addition, three different types of practices for formally governing work-related smartphone use in new work arrangements have been identified: a) formalising the implicit communication etiquette, b) designing rules for specific organisational contexts and c) making use of technical resources. From a practical point of view, we recommend managers introduce a participatory process to design a formal policy that builds on established social practices.

Abstract:
This quantitative research study focuses on the capabilities of ICT tools used by virtualteams and seeks to find out what, if any, correlation between the ICT tools capabilitiesand challenges that virtual teams face exist. The study addresses four prominent virtualteam challenges: forming trust and relationships, information overload, communicationbreakdown, lack of team synergy and cohesion. It analyses ICT tools and establishhypothesis using MST theory and the existing research in this field. The data analysis isconducted using Spearman’s Rho correlation. The findings show that the correlationbetween ICT tools usage and the challenges that virtual teams face are not statisticallysignificant to establish a link between virtual team challenges and ICT tools usage. Thiscould mean that a significantly larger sample is required to establish the link betweenthese two variables. It could also mean that the virtual team challenges need to be reevaluatedas the collected data suggests that the discussed challenges are rarelyexperienced by virtual teams. Therefore, further studies are needed in order to establishthe correlation between the virtual team challenges and ICT tools usage.

Abstract:
The role and impact of information and communications technologies (ICTs) towards enabling socio-economic development in small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) has received attention from various scholars. South Africa as a lower middle-income developing country has a number of development priorities which include the urgent need to expand the economy and ultimately to eradicate poverty and unemployment. Based on evidence from more advanced economies, expanded access and usage of ICTs in SMMEs is considered an imperative to enable the acceleration of development goals. This study sets out to advance understanding of the role and impact of ICT usage by SMMEs on poverty reduction from a South African perspective. A systematic literature review methodology was applied to analyse previous theoretical and empirical studies conducted on the interplay between ICTs, SMMEs and poverty reduction. Empirical data was gathered from SMMEs through semi structured interviews and observations. A purposively selected case study was also carried out serving to enhance contextual insight into the role of ICTs in an SMME context. The thematic analysis method, Actor-Network Theory (ANT) and Sustainable Livelihood framework (SL) were applied as the data analysis methods. The combination of ANT and the SL framework for expanded analysis has not been applied before by similar studies that examine the interplay between ICT, SMMEs and poverty reduction. The process of triangulation was applied on the empirical findings in order to reduce bias and to construct a conceptual model. This study contributes to the body of knowledge by proposing a conceptual model that frames the role and impact of ICT usage by SMMEs towards improving their livelihoods and reducing poverty. Methodologically it offers an example of how method pluralism can be applied to gain a better understanding of the research phenomena. From a practical perspective, this study addresses real life challenges resulting in the suggestion of practical guidelines to ensure that the use of ICTs by SMMEs results in improvements in their financial and non-financial well-being. The findings of this study indicate that the relationship between ICT usage and poverty reduction is neither simple nor linear. Effective use of ICTs could result in SMMEs leveraging more benefits and thus improving their human capabilities as well as social and economic well-being resulting in poverty reduction.
Thesis (PhD) University of Pretoria, 2017.
Informatics
PhD
Unrestricted

Abstract:
With the development of new information and communication technologies, working procedures are increasingly computerized. This increasing computerization of working procedures raises the question of their acceptance by workers who have to appropriate new ways of doing their work. The present thesis aims to examine the conditions for the adoption of technologies conveying work procedures by maintenance technicians. Four studies are carried out on two fields of research (aeronautical maintenance and industrial maintenance) with the aim of understanding how maintenance technicians perceive and use these computerized working procedures. Two studies are carried out in the field of aeronautics and aim to investigate the social acceptability and the use of three new formats of procedures (3D animation, 2D and photos) before they are set up in the workshops. Study 1 examines the perception of new procedure formats by technicians (N = 136). The results of this study show that beliefs related to usefulness and ease of use are the main predictors of behavioral intention. In addition, it appears that beliefs differ depending on the type of use behavior of the procedures (daily or exceptional use). In order to understand the possible difficulties in using these new formats, Study 2 concerns the realization of user tests (N = 41). The aim is to study the usefulness and usability of the new procedural formats compared to the current format (text + image). The results show that all technicians succeed in maintenance, regardless of the format used. In addition, in general, new formats allow technicians to be more efficient because they take less time with new formats (3D animation and photos) than with reference formats and so errors made during maintenance are reduced. The new formats, with the presence of visual information, facilitate the location of the information on the equipment. Finally, a large majority of technicians intend to use the new formats. Two other studies are carried out in the field of industrial maintenance on the acceptance and use of a management of procedures software by the technicians. In this framework, study 3 concerns the perception of software in use by maintenance technicians (N = 61). The results highlight the belief in perceived compatibility as the main predictor of attitude, behavioral intention, and actual use of the software. In order to investigate the actual use of the software, study 4 deals with the analysis of the activity of 8 technicians from four workshops (filmed observation and interview). The results show that the software is suitable for only some of the technicians. Indeed, it seems to represent a brake for experienced technicians and moderately experienced technicians in the sense they are constrained in the use of the software (impossibility to navigate freely between the steps). However, the software proves to be a valuable help for inexperienced technicians (help support, training aid ...). Recommendations are made to improve the design of the software studied. In particular, improvements in the design of the three new formats of aeronautical maintenance procedures are suggested (adapting the format to the task carried out, improving the ergonomics of the touch pad...). In the second case, we make recommendations to modify the procedure management software and make it more compatible with the work of the technicians (setting up an expert mode, facilitating the search for information, navigating freely between steps …)

Abstract:
The smartphone is omnipresent and is cherished and held close by people. It allows for constant connection within a digitally connected society, as well as for many other purposes such as leisure activity or informational purpose. Within the Information Systems studies deeper investigation is required as to what impact this “taken – for – granted” mobile access to information and mobile apps has for individuals and society and if a “technological addiction”can be developed when using the smartphone for everything during the day on such a constant basis. The aim of this study was to understand the role of the smartphone in society and to shed light on this unclear relationship between the constant use of a smartphone and its development towards an addictive quality. To reach a conclusion, in depth – interviews were conducted with participants about their relationship to the smartphone and their smartphone use based on questions derived from literature on mobile communication technologies and the types of digital addictions existing. The results are that the smartphone is a device that seamlessly integrates into our daily lives in that we unconsciously use it as a tool to make our daily tasks more manageable, and enjoyable. It also supports us in getting better organized, to be in constant touch with family and friends remotely, and to be more mobile which is a useful ability in today’s mobility driven society. Smartphones have been found to inhabit a relatively low potential to addiction. Traits of voluntary behaviour, habitual behaviour, and mandatory behaviour of smartphone use have been found. All of these behaviours are not considered a true addiction. In the end, it seems that the increase of smartphone use is mainly due to the way we communicate nowadays digitally, and the shift in how we relate to our social peers using digital means.

Abstract:
Technology has become part of society’s everyday functions, changing rapidly and providing widespread mobility. In South Africa alone, the amount of internet users grew from 8,5 million to 24,9 million in only three years (2011-2014). Currently 90% of these users access this facility from their mobile devices. This statistic illustrates the trend that South Africans are moving towards a continually connected lifestyle, a situation in which information and communication technology (ICT) seems to have become omnipresent. Due the rapid growth of ICT technology and its adoption into people’s lives (both personally and professionally) the influence of such a phenomenon needed to be investigated to understand its impact on individuals and society. Thus, the objective of the present research was to explore the role ICT plays in employees’ work and family domain. The research followed a qualitative research approach and made use of snowball sampling. The sample of participants (N=25) were mostly employees from a professional organisation. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect data and the interviews were recorded, transcribed and processed through thematic analyses. The analyses revealed the following four main themes with sub-themes flowing from it: 1) the usage of ICT; 2) the role of ICT usage; 3) the challenges relating to ICT usage; and 4) managing work-life interaction by using ICT. Theme 2 lend itself to be sub-divided into four minor subthemes namely: 1) the positive role of ICT usage; 2) the negative role of ICT usage; 3) the role ICT plays in relationships; and 4) the increased expectations brought about by ICT usage. The current research was not without certain limitations, which should be noted. The researcher only investigated the employees themselves and did not extend the unit of analysis to include the household of employees (esp. the partner or spouse). In addition, the majority of the participants were Afrikaans-speaking males, which is not a true reflection of the multicultural society of South Africa promoting gender equality in the work place. Based on the findings of the present research, various recommendations could be made. Future research could firstly enlarge the sample to be more representative of South Africa’s multicultural and diverse society, and secondly, to include the partner or spouse of employees. Organisations should also consider the implementation of various policies on ICT usage. These directives could include the following: a policy to ensure across the board ICT implementation; an after-work hours policy to ensure as little as possible infringement on employees work-life interaction; and a hierarchical policy ensuring the correct communication channels are followed. Lastly, future research could also do multiple comparative studies on the differences between the degree of ICT adoption, or the amount of ICT devices employees utilise and the impact this has on their work-life interaction. Such research can also investigate how the decrease in face-to-face communication impacts social interaction in both the work and nonwork domains and thereby affects employees’ work-life interaction.
MCom (Industrial Psychology), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015

Abstract:
The use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in teaching and learning is of significant importance to a country’s development and the social growth of individuals. As a result, ICT usage is gaining momentum in world schooling systems. Cognisant of the benefits of ICTs in teaching and learning, South African schools have introduced ICTs in schools and teachers are compelled to adopt and integrate technology to improve their pedagogic activities. The purpose of this research was to explore South African teachers’ experience in using ICT in the schooling system. This study was underpinned by the Network Society theoretical framework that endorses the use of ICTs in teaching and learning environments. The research method used in the study followed a qualitative interpretative approach and data collection methods included a literature study, non-participant observation and semi-structured interviews with a purposefully selected sample of teachers and school principals and analysis of documents on ICTs in teaching and learning. Findings indicated that ICT integration in teaching and learning is endorsed by teachers and principals who understand the benefits of ICT in enabling better methodological strategies, greater collaboration among teachers, improved access to the required information and the ability to cater for learners with different potential and learning styles. However, a number of factors that hinder the successful ICT integration in urban schools were identified as inadequate ICT infrastructure, teachers’ lack of ICT skills and low level of ICT proficiency, inadequate training, negative attitudes and poor teacher confidence. Other factors included lack of ICT leadership, funds and technical support. These findings indicated poor implementation of policy and a lack of connection between theory and practice. It was concluded that all education stakeholders, including parents, should work together in securing an ICT infrastructure that will accommodate all learners. It was recommended that more regular workshops which focus on the development of ICT skills in accordance with the proficiency levels required to effect successful integration of ICTs by teachers, be conducted. Moreover, principals should attend training workshops to learn about their responsibilities as ICT leaders at school. Technological pedagogical and content knowledge (PACK) together with CRAR3FS2 principles could provide a crucial framework for training South African teachers to overcome their ICT skill challenges. The ultimate goal of this study is to analyse factors that both hinder and enable the integration of ICTs into teaching practice in South Africa and to contribute to the body of literature on ICT integration in South African urban schools.
Curriculum and Instructional Studies
D. Abstract:
AbstractThe usage of information and communication technologies (ICTs) is increasingly becoming an important driving force for transforming the rural economy in China. Using a unique nationally-representative household survey dataset in 2015–2019, this study documents the overall trends of internet access, computer and smartphone usage, and e-commerce adoption in rural China and examines the main factors affecting farmers’ adoption of major ICTs. The results show that the increase in usage of ICTs has been impressive. Empirical analyses suggest that human capital, resource endowment, ICT infrastructure, and neighborhood influence are the main determinants of households’ or individuals’ adoption of ICTs. However, a digital divide has emerged across regions and among farmers. This study concludes with several policy implications for fostering rapid and inclusive usage of ICTs in rural areas in the coming digital era.

Abstract:
AbstractMobile payment has become ubiquitous worldwide. It is a form of digital payment activity performed on-site from a mobile device (i.e. smartphone) for the purchase of goods and services using QR or NFC (contactless and proximity card) technology. This study examines destination stakeholders’ level of engagement and involvement in facilitating mobile payments (e.g., AliPay and WeChat Pay) for Chinese tourists. Sabah (Malaysian-Borneo), a popular island destination in Southeast Asia, was selected as the study site. Using a qualitative approach, 25 tourism and hospitality industry practitioners participated in a semi-structured, in-depth interview between February to July 2020. Preliminary results revealed that industry practitioners had been actively seeking to implement mobile payment facilities since late-2017, specifically in the retail sector, as they felt the pressure in accommodating the needs of Chinese tourists. This study offers insights into how industry practitioners address local consumers’ shift in payment usage-behaviours; from traditional forms of payments (e.g., cash and credit card) to mobile payments in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract:
AbstractThe purpose of this study is to investigate the role of socio-demographic factors that influence the use of Pay TV usage in Greece. We try to understand the impact of the continuous innovations in the media, information, and communication technology (ICT) industries, such as Over the Top services (OTT) which have allowed consumers to access video content anytime and anywhere through various devices. The research aims to highlight the unique challenges that Greek television companies face, including socio-economic characteristics and technological factors. Through quantitative research, the influence of various socio-demographic factors on the likelihood of being an OTT TV user are examined. Panel data analysis and cluster analysis are conducted to identify which factors affect pay TV usage. Data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority analyzed for the period 2016 up to 2022, that refer to the usage of information and communication technologies by households and individuals. Results suggest that age, income, education level and urbanization degree are positive predictors of OTT pay tv consumption. New directions for television businesses’ models concerning new trends in TV consumption and the rise of broadband services are suggested.

Abstract:
Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are broadly used to support people’s daily needs. Individuals addicted to psychoactive drugs sometimes present social exclusion as well as, limitations to the usage of ICT such as Internet, devices and applications. The aim of this paper is to present the findings of a pilot study related to the use of Information and Communication Technologies by Drug Addicts. A survey was conducted on 204 users of psychoactive substances. According to the results, the majority of the drug addicts seem to use ICT on a daily basis, showing their preference on Smartphones compared to other devices. The Internet access and the usage of Social Media and Communication Networks by addicted individuals is quite high, probably because they are willing to reintegrate into the society through Social Networks. Age is often related to the usage of ICT on Drug Addicts.

Abstract:
This chapter illustrates the significance of developing a shared understanding of community, which is more than an adjective qualifying a certain type of ICT usage in a rapidly developing area of social practice and academic study — Community Informatics. Highlighting the importance of contextualising ICTs within their social environments, the chapter approaches Community Informatics from a human-centered perspective. It introduces a framework of democratic design criteria intended to assist the community planning and implementation processes of community technology initiatives. Examining the significance of community policy, community partnerships and community practice, the author invokes the need for interdisciplinary and cross-sectoral collaboration in Community Informatics and argues that community ICT initiatives should be grounded in the needs of local communities if they are to be utilised successfully as tools of community empowerment.

Abstract:
In today's world, using modern technology and especially the smartphone can ease a lot our work and other activities. But also the risk is very high. We can talk about several security concerns related to Internet usage. Many individuals are not aware of the threats that this usage is creating. Having installed an IT security software it is not mandatory for the moment, but it is more than necessary in protecting our personal information, documents, pictures and any other data. Security concerns already are limiting or preventing the individuals from ordering or buying goods or services from the Internet, or from carrying out internet banking, or from providing personal information to social or professional networking services, or from communicating with public services or administrations, downloading and submitting official forms, or from downloading software or apps, music, video files, games or other data files. The routine day-to-day activities on the Internet like sending or receiving e-mails, telephoning or video calls, posting messages to social media sites or instant messaging, participating in social networks, finding information about goods and services, reading or downloading online newspaper or news, downloading software, internet banking, travel and accommodation services, job search or sending an application, communication, finding different information that we don't' usually use or downloading /listening to/ watching / playing music, films and/or games it is something that people will always do. With the help of the data provided by EUROSTAT, we analyzed the main risks concerning ICT trust, security and privacy in EU Countries.

Abstract:
The current advances in the field of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is having a considerable impact in all forms of education (formal, informal, nonformal and incidental learning). This paper is taking in consideration an analysis of advantages and disadvantages of usage of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) on formal, informal, nonformal and incidental learning as forms of education. There are a number of significant differences between the different kinds of learning mentioned above, among them formal learning being the most standardized. However, the other types of learning have their importance because not all the persons interested to learn more in a certain area have the intention or possibility to follow formal courses. There are advantages and disadvantages that both formal and less formal learning have. For example formal learning has the advantage that it gives the students the confidence that the area of study will be better covered and usually provides certificates to attest the abilities and knowledge of the students, the disadvantages being that it is more expensive than the other learning types. However, less formal learning is more accessible, more flexible, cheaper, but a person learning in this way will not benefit from a certificate attesting his abilities and knowledge and it will usually take a longer time to learn. Learning from experience (trial and error) can sometimes be one of the best way to learn, but it has the limitations previously mentioned and it can be sometimes the most expensive learning method. There will be a comparative analysis of differences and similarities between above mentioned concepts, advantages and disadvantages, combining opportunities for better learning.

Abstract:
Technological advancements have greatly improved the quality of life and increased longevity. Meanwhile, the increase in the elderly population for the next years generates some concerns about the quality of life and independence of these people; A prototype for a pill monitoring system has been proposed as part of this project, which aims to contribute to this progress by developing and implementing an Internet of Things (IoT) device for pill management. The prototype allows users to input medication information, set alarms, and monitor doses. The user interface was designed to focus on intuitive and accessible interaction, considering users with low levels of mobile technology proficiency. Additionally, the application generates graphs of patient medication usage to assist healthcare professionals. To control and monitor the medication compartments, the prototype was implemented using the ESP32 microcontroller and Bluetooth or Wi-Fi communication. Regardless of the preliminary stages of development, the functional prototype has great potential to become a valuable tool for the elderly.
