Full text
Abstract:
The phenomenon of digitization is transforming industries worldwide by introducing new valueproducing opportunities. In the railway industry, market liberalization has resulted in increased competition. To remain profitable in this new market environment, rail operators need to transform and acquire new digital capabilities and tools. By digitizing information-intensive processes with an information system, railway companies can reduce loss of operation time and reduce total maintenance costs. At the same time, the limited research exploring information systems in maintenance management has made it challenging for companies wanting to digitize. Significant attention has been devoted to the separate topics, however research overlapping the two areas of study has been inadequate. The thesis aims to contribute with knowledge to bridge this gap in literature by investigating the opportunities a maintenance organization potentially can capture with an information system and the success factors needed to succeed. By conducting the thesis in collaboration with the Swedish railway maintenance company MTR Tech AB the potential uses of an information system have been identified and assessed. Findings indicate that there are three main business opportunities to obtain from an information system: support of the troubleshooting process, better planning of reactive maintenance and enabling the performance of condition-based maintenance. At the same time, the profitability of an information system was found to be directly linked to its degree of utilization. Our findings have therefore allowed us to conclude that the business opportunity to pursue is the one that is most likely to be carried out fully and successfully in the prevailing circumstances. Lastly, the findings conclude that the success factors needed to capture the desired business opportunities are a dedicated project group, clear communication and information sharing, as well as adequate personnel.

Abstract:
Thesis (MTech (Business Information Systems))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2018.
Railway organisations in South Africa are government parastatals. These organisations have embarked on mega modernisation programmes. Project and procurement process alignment is crucial to the successful implementation of such programmes, as the disconnect between the two processes may result in project cost overruns and escalations. Projects in the parastatal organisations are not completed on or executed according to the planned schedules. The two main research questions are stated as follows: i) What factors affect the alignment between procurement and project management processes in the South African railway organisation? ii) How can the parastatal organisation align the procurement and project management processes? For the research methodology, a subjectivist ontological and interpretivist epistemological stance was followed. The research approach is inductive, with a case study as strategy. Data collection was done on a non-random, purposively selected unit of analysis and observation. Purposive sampling allows the researcher to rely on his or her own judgement when choosing to participate in the study. Participants were selected based on characteristics of a population and the objectives of the study. The participants belong to three departments, namely IT, SCM, and the Project Management Office (Project Managers). These three departments were selected because of their relevance to the study. Interviews were conducted using semi-structured questionnaires. The instrument used was interview guide. Data was analysed by firstly transcribing the interviews. To confirm the correctness of the interviews, the data was validated. Data was further analysed by means of summarising, categorising, and conducting a thematic analysis. Ethical principles were followed in accordance with the policies and procedure of CPUT. The study revealed that project and procurement process misalignment in the railway sector in South Africa does exists. A detailed discussion of factors contributing to this misalignment are discussed further in chapter five and chapter six is recommendations.

Abstract:
The European standard EN 50128 "Railway applications - Communication, signalling and processing systems - Software for railway control and protection systems" is one of the European standards for European Railway systems. It is intended for software aspects, specifying procedures and technical requirements for the development of programmable Electronic systems, which are used in railway control and protection applications. Since 2017- 04-25 the original version EN 50128:2001 has been replaced by the updated new version EN 50128:2011. The update is quite extensive and will effect many parts of the existing Railway systems. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of the EN 50128 update. The work for this study includes literature study, document research and interview with the relevant supplies and experts. Qualitative and quantitative methods have been used in the study to reach the possible best results. The effects due to the EN 50128 update have been extensively investigated. The following issues have been addressed: - How can the update of the standard EN 50128 be done smoothly by the companies? - How much money have they spent to update their process to follow the 2011 version? - What parts of the process have been the most extensive and expensive to change due to the standard update? The results of the work are useful for an organized and professional assessor to help and support the companies dealing with this complex software, in order for them to be prepared for the upcoming standard update as well as possible. If the affected companies have been proactive in their own development of their methods/techniques, the 2011 version of the standard will not be a major work to follow for their process. A standard is a guideline and a support in the way to a safer system.

Buttle, Geoffrey William. "A signal failure? : the organisation and management of British railways, 1948-1964." Thesis, Durham University, 2008. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/2469/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study offers a reassessment of the organisation and management of British Railways from 1948 to 1964. In examining the impact of the 1948 nationalisation, it considers whether the under-studied alternatives proposed by the railway companies might have been more successful, and whether the Labour government's political imperatives resulted in inadequate preparation for public ownership and modernisation of the transport system. Using an extensive range of government files, including records not available for earlier studies, it argues that the slow process of modernisation was less the consequence of government intervention or financial restrictions, or of general economic conditions, than of deficiencies in railway management - division of authority, weak strategic planning, lack of financial control, ineffective implementation of policies, and inability to alter entrenched attitudes in the workforce and among managers themselves. These management problems resulted in the expensive failure of the 1955 Modernisation Plan. The Conservative government, previously supportive (if with misgivings) of the railway management, now had no option but to impose its own review of the railways systems, leading to the controversial 1964 Beeching Report. The Report and implementation of its recommendations are examined with the purpose of assessing whether Beeching deserves his continuing denigration. The main conclusions are that nationalisation was mishandled, and that thereafter management failings made further government intervention inevitable.

Chen, Lei. "Real time traffic management in junction areas and bottleneck sections on mainline railways." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2012. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/3650/.

Full text
Abstract:
The author of this thesis deals with the issues of real time traffic management in junction areas and bottleneck sections on mainline railways in the event of service disturbances. A systematic methodology is proposed for modelling and solving real time train rescheduling problems in junction areas and bottleneck sections, including train re-sequencing and train re-timing. A formal mathematical model, the Junction Rescheduling Model (JRM) is proposed, based on a Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) to minimise a Weighted Average Delay (WAD). An innovative algorithm based on Differential Evolution algorithm, named DE_JRM is proposed for solving real time train rescheduling problems formulated with JRM. The performance of the algorithm DE_JRM has been evaluated with a stochastic method based on Monte-Carlo simulation methodology. The evaluation results show a good performance for both flyover and flat junctions compared with First Come First Served (FCFS) and a conventional ARS strategy. The author also extends the proposed methodology, including JRM and the algorithm DE_JRM, to model and solve real time train rescheduling problems for bottleneck sections of railway networks. Finally, an integrated system architecture for the traffic management and train control is introduced for system implementation of the proposed methodology of train rescheduling in junction areas and bottleneck sections on mainline railways.

Abstract:
In the nineteenth century, the steam railway became, for many people, the superior conduit for the inland translocation of people and freight. Once devised, steam railways offered such a huge improvement on previous modes and made such a dramatic change to the unity, organisation and commerce of most countries that almost everyone wanted one. New Zealand proved no different, but was faced with not only the twin problems of low population and often rugged geography, but also serious economic problems from difficult world trading conditions and a debt greatly increased by railway construction costs. In the later 1880s, a conservative government decided to vest the Government Railways in independent Commissioners to try to improve productivity and cut out political influence, corruption and jobbery in the huge commercial presence the colonys railways represented. While this move was successful, a change to one-man-one-vote, together with the pivotal 1890 Maritime Strike, saw the country move left in the elections of 1890, bringing to power a Liberal Government. This new Ministry then set out to reduce the autonomy of the Railway Commissioners, taking four years to return the management of Railways to the direct control of the Government. While interesting in itself, this is part of the story of the process of the democratic development of New Zealand. This was a community struggling with the often conflicting demands of using railways to not only service the railway debt but also fulfil public transit requirements, including encouraging settlement and economic growth. The organisations monopolistic nature and great economic presence, however, offered multiple, including corrupt, opportunities to support the political aspirations of those in power, while offering a less than wonderful service to its customers. Taking place against a backdrop of agitation for railway reform, particularly orchestrated by railway activist Samuel Vaile, the outcome can be seen to have been less than completely desirable for the economic development of the country or its people. This was despite huge support for the principal activist against the Railway Commissioners, Liberal Premier Richard Seddon.

Full text
Abstract:
Transient stability concerns the ability of a power system to maintain synchronism after a large disturbance. Transient stability plays an important role in guaranteeing operational security and reliability and has been extensively studies for large 50 Hz and 60 Hz transmission systems. However, transient stability of low frequency railway grids has not been properly investigated. As low frequency railway grids operate at another frequency than the public grid, conversion of frequency is needed. This conversion is performed by Rotary Frequency Converters or by Static Frequency Converters. These two types of converters have a different impact on stability. In this thesis, the overall aim is to obtain knowledge on transient stability in low frequency railway grids, with focus on the Swedish synchronous-synchronous railway grid with a mix of Rotary and Static Frequency Converters. The transient stability problem is approached by developing a simplified model of a Static Frequency Converter that can be used for the stability studies in low frequency railways. The Static Frequency Converter is modelled as single phase generator with an equivalent inertia and damping. However as Static Frequency converters cannot handle currents much above their ratings, current limitation is implemented. The current limitation is needed to avoid unnecessary tripping of the converter during fault or other high current situations. With the model developed for a Static Frequency Converter and with a simplified model of a Rotary Frequency Converter, transient stability studies have been performed for several test systems representing the Swedish railway grid. The simulations performed shows the appearance of power oscillations after a large disturbance, between a Static Frequency Converter and a Rotary Frequency Converter when these are operating in parallel. The simulations also showed that the systems studied were stable for realistic values of the fault-clearing time.

Bearfield, George Joseph. "Using Bayesian networks to represent parameterised risk models for the UK railways." Thesis, Queen Mary, University of London, 2009. http://qmro.qmul.ac.uk/xmlui/handle/123456789/28163.

Full text
Abstract:
The techniques currently used to model risk and manage the safety of the UK railway network are not aligned to the mechanism by which catastrophic accidents occur in this industry. In this thesis, a new risk modelling method is proposed to resolve this problem. Catastrophic accidents can occur as the result of multiple failures occurring to all of the various defences put in place to prevent them. The UK railway industry is prone to this mechanism of accident occurrence, as many different technical, operational and organizational defences are used to prevent accidents. The railway network exists over a wide geographic area, with similar accidents possible at many different locations. The risk from these accidents is extremely variable and depends on the underlying conditions at each particular location, such as the state of assets or the speed of trains. When unfavourable conditions coincide the probability of multiple failures of planned defences increases and a 'risk hotspot' arises. Ideal requirements for modelling risk are proposed, taking account of the need to manage multiple defences of conceptually different type and the existence of risk hotspots. The requirements are not met by current risk modelling techniques although some of the requirements have been addressed experimentally, and in other industries and countries. It is proposed to meet these requirements using Bayesian Networks to supplement and extend fault and event tree analysis, the traditional techniques used for risk modelling in the UK railway industry. Application of the method is demonstrated using a case study: the building of a model of derailment risk on the UK railway network. The proposed method provides a means of better integrating industry wide analysis and risk modelling with the safety management tasks and safety related decisions that are undertaken by safety managers in the industry.

Rastogi, Rahul. "Information security service management : a service management approach to information security management." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/1389.

Full text
Abstract:
In today’s world, information and the associated Information Technology are critical assets for many organizations. Any information security breach, or compromise of these assets, can lead to serious implications for organizations that are heavily dependent on these assets. For such organizations, information security becomes vital. Organizations deploy an information security infrastructure for protecting their information assets. This infrastructure consists of policies and controls. Organizations also create an information security management system for managing information security in the organization. While some of the policies and controls are of a purely technical nature, many depend upon the actions of end-users. However, end-users are known to exhibit both compliant and noncompliant behaviours in respect of these information security policies and controls in the organization. Non-compliant information security behaviours of end-users have the potential to lead to information security breaches. Non-compliance thus needs to be controlled. The discipline of information security and its management have evolved over the years. However, the discipline has retained the technology-driven nature of its origin. In this context, the discipline has failed to adequately appreciate the role played by the end-users and the complexities of their behaviour, as it relates to information security policies and controls. The pervasive information security management philosophy is that of treating end-users as the enemy. Compliance is sought to be achieved through awareness programs, rewards, punishments and evermore strict policies and controls. This has led to a bureaucratic information security management approach. The philosophy of treating end-users as the enemy has had an adverse impact on information security in the organization. It can be said that rather than curbing non-compliance by end-users, the present-day bureaucratic approach to information security management has contributed to non-compliance. This thesis calls this the end-user crisis. This research aims at resolving this crisis by identifying an improved approach to information security management in the organization. This research has applied the service management approach to information security management. The resultant Information Security Service Management (ISSM) views end-users as assets and resources, and not as enemies. The central idea of ISSM is that the end-user is to be treated as a customer, whose needs are to be satisfied. This research presents ISSM. This research also presents the various components of ISSM to aid in its implementation in an organization.

Abstract:
Product Information Management (PIM) is a field that deals with the product master data management and combines into one base the experience and the principles of data integration and data quality. Product Information Management merges the specific attributes of products across all channels in the supply chain. By unification, centralization and standardization of product information into one platform, quality and timely information with added value can be achieved. The goal of the theoretical part of the thesis is to construct a picture of the PIM, to place the PIM into a broader context, to define and describe various parts of the PIM solution, to describe the main differences in characteristics between the product data and data about clients and to summarize the available information on the administration and management of knowledge bases of the PIM data quality relevant for solving practical problems. The practical part of the thesis focuses on designing the structure, the content and the method of filling the knowledge base of the Product Information Management solution in the environment of the DataFlux software tools from SAS Institute. The practical part of the thesis further incorporates the analysis of the real product data, the design of definitions and objects of the knowledge base, the creation of a reference database and the testing of the knowledge base with the help of specially designed web services.

Abstract:
The quick social economic development of Vietnam stimulates great demand of quality as well as quantity on transport service by the increasingly growing needs of customer for transportation. The railway passenger transport is currently still an important branch of a country’s transport system because it is safer, more eco-friendly and much more efficient in comparison to another means. However, the increasing of the number of passengers is the main causes of fast increasing waste amount from the rail service. The aim of this paper is to study how the organic waste from rail service is managed and treated today by the Vietnam railways. The paper ends with some proposal solutions for treating and disposing of organic waste by applying renewable energy technologies for climate change mitigation to protect human health and the environment

Abstract:

The purpose of the study was to develop suitable information structures to sup port main processes of facilities management (FM). The approach chosen to create these structures was to develop a generic FM process model and a building product model. The research method used was a system analytical approach involving the definition of activity models and object-oriented conceptual schemas. The existing national construction classification system (the BSAB System) was an important point of departure in the research work.

The resulting models were evaluated through prototyping. Three different prototypes were developed,: the Klara prototype (a system for plantring, operation and maintenance of building services systems), the Blandaren prototype (an object oriented database system for FM) and the Kronoberg prototype (a GIS like system for facilities management information). All the prototypes used data from real facilities. The prototype systems demonstrated that the product model @S-model) fulfils the requirements of flexibility, stability, adaptability, com prehensibility and cost-effectiveness, which are discussed in this thesis. The ge neric process model, which was mainly tested in one of the prototypes, should provide better conditions for integration by capturing main aspects of the es sence of FM and by providing an overall structure for information handling within FM.

In parallel with the evaluation of the prototype work, a conceptual schema (the Spatial Arrangement Model) was developed. Tbis is based on experiences from the prototypes and done in collaboration with the standardisation work for building construction within the STEP (STandard for the Exchange of Product model data) activity.

The overall result of the research provides basic prerequisites for the develop ment of commercial IT systems for FM as well as an input to international stan dardisation efforts

Sensor management may be defined as those stochastic control problems in which control values are selected to influence sensing parameters in order to maximize the utility of the resulting measurements for an underlying detection or estimation problem. While problems of this type can be formulated as a dynamic program, the state space of the program is in general infinite, and traditional solution techniques are inapplicable. Despite this fact, many authors have applied simple heuristics such as greedy or myopic controllers with great success. This thesis studies sensor management problems in which information theoretic quantities such as entropy are utilized to measure detection or estimation performance. The work has two emphases: Firstly, we seek performance bounds which guarantee performance of the greedy heuristic and derivatives thereof in certain classes of problems. Secondly, we seek to extend these basic heuristic controllers to nd algorithms that provide improved performance and are applicable in larger classes of problems for which the performance bounds do not apply. The primary problem of interest is multiple object tracking and identification; application areas include sensor network management and multifunction radar control.
(cont.) Utilizing the property of submodularity, as proposed for related problems by different authors, we show that the greedy heuristic applied to sequential selection problems with information theoretic objectives is guaranteed to achieve at least half of the optimal reward. Tighter guarantees are obtained for diffusive problems and for problems involving discounted rewards. Online computable guarantees also provide tighter bounds in specific problems. The basic result applies to open loop selections, where all decisions are made before any observation values are received; we also show that the closed loop greedy heuristic, which utilizes observations received in the interim in its subsequent decisions, possesses the same guarantee relative to the open loop optimal, and that no such guarantee exists relative to the optimal closed loop performance. The same mathematical property is utilized to obtain an algorithm that exploits the structure of selection problems involving multiple independent objects. The algorithm involves a sequence of integer programs which provide progressively tighter upper bounds to the true optimal reward. An auxiliary problem provides progressively tighter lower bounds, which can be used to terminate when a near-optimal solution has been found.
(cont.) The formulation involves an abstract resource consumption model, which allows observations that expend different amounts of available time. Finally, we present a heuristic approximation for an object tracking problem in a sensor network, which permits a direct trade-o between estimation performance and energy consumption. We approach the trade-o through a constrained optimization framework, seeking to either optimize estimation performance over a rolling horizon subject to a constraint on energy consumption, or to optimize energy consumption subject to a constraint on estimation performance. Lagrangian relaxation is used alongside a series of heuristic approximations to and a tractable solution that captures the essential structure in the problem.

Abstract:
Information System development involves various activities; the process of developing information systems is considered to be the production of a series of documents. The information derived from the activities of the life cycle needs to be stored in a way that will facilitate the carrying out of subsequent activities. That is, information must be stored with a consistent, semantically rich, flexible, and efficient structure that will make it accessible for use by various tools employed in carrying out the development process. In this research, knowledge base management system (KBMS) to manage the information created by the information system development process was designed and implemented. Several contemporary popular knowledge representation schemes can be managed conveniently by this KBMS, which utilized efficient database techniques to facilitate fast retrieval and traversal of the underlying semantic inheritance net and frame knowledge structure. Inference and logic deduction capability was made a part of the static knowledge structure to further extend the functionality of the KBMS. Furthermore, a specially designed relational database management system was implemented and interfaced with the KBMS to alleviate the possibility of a storage saturation problem and to facilitate the storage of detailed exclusive information of terms defined in the knowledge base. Models that are applicable to various information system development activities were identified and stored in the knowledge base. The aggregation of those models is, in fact, a conceptual non-procedural language that provides a concise descriptive framework to help the user gather and manage information derived from various activities during the information system development process. The knowledge base, the language, and several knowledge-base related tools were used by more than seventy graduate students in a case study for a system analysis and design course. An information system methodology specifically tailored for this knowledge base supported environment was proposed and applied in a simplified case to illustrate the process of how a database-centered information system can be derived from the initial strategic planning phase. The methodology explored and made use of the storage structure of the closely coupled knowledge base and database. Finally, future research direction was identified.

This research considers the theoretical and practical link between long-term sustainable development and disaster management. The aim is to develop a theoretical framework and a methodology which allows the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to manage the related information. Literature review leads us to understand development and disaster management as part of a learning cycle. Within this context, a common approach to information management is suggested to support the decision-making process in a cost-effective manner. A “universal” GIS is proposed to integrate information management for development and disaster while exploring the interactions between projects and project and the related geography which is considered a complex reality full of synergies between space, ecosystem, society, culture and economy. Study of academic production, practical implementations, interviews and a limited GIS application (using ArcMap and QGis) are used to endorse the capabilities of this concept. These capabilities are limited by lack of free information and cost of data gathering, interoperability and other technical issues. Open-source and crowdsourcing may solve some limitations while others need further research.

Abstract:
The spread of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) has transformed the way we deliver services, and has made them in general more efficient and more accessible to users. With these improvements however came new challenges. The extensive use of electronic services in our daily life, and the massive gathering of transactional data have led to serious privacy violations.
In this thesis we provide techniques to enhance users' privacy, and to give them greater control over their data. We propose a protocol allowing users to authorize access to their remotely-stored records, according to a self-chosen privacy policy, and without the storage server learning the access pattern to their records, or the index of the queried records. This prevents the storage server from linking the identity of the party retrieving a record to that of the record owner. In many applications, the association between the identity of the record retriever and that of the record owner represents sensitive information, and needs to be kept private. The proposed protocol is called Accredited Symmetrically Private Information Retrieval (ASPIR), and uses Brands's Anonymous Credentials [Bra00] and a Symmetrically Private Information Retrieval (SPIR) scheme by Lipmaa [Lip05], as building blocks.
Next, we extend the above ASPIR protocol to a setting where the stored records belong to multiple owners simultaneously. The new protocol, called Multi-Authorizer ASPIR, allows the owners of a record to authorize access to their data according to a self-chosen privacy policy, without the storage server learning the access pattern to their record. We present constructions for settings where the retrieving party has to provide authorizations either from all the owners of the target record, or from a subset of them of size greater that a certain threshold. We also consider the case of a General Access Structure, where the retrieval is allowed only if authorizations from certain pre-defined subsets of the owners are provided. The Multi-authorizer ASPIR protocol is more efficient than ASPIR, and can be built with any SPIR primitive.
Finally, we dedicate the last part of the thesis to applying privacy preserving techniques to a real world problem. In particular, we consider the area of e-health, and provide a privacy-preserving protocol for handling prescriptions in the Belgian healthcare system.

Abstract:
Bioinformatics, the discipline concerned with biological information management is essential in the post-genome era, where the complexity of data processing allows for contemporaneous multi level research including that at the genome level, transcriptome level, proteome level, the metabolome level, and the integration of these -omic studies towards gaining an understanding of biology at the systems level. This research is also having a major impact on disease research and drug discovery, particularly through pharmacogenomics studies. In this study innovative resources have been generated via the use of two case studies. One was of the Research & Development Genetics (RDG) department at AstraZeneca, Alderley Park and the other was of the Pharmacogenomics Group at the Sanger Institute in Cambridge UK. In the AstraZeneca case study senior scientists were interviewed using semi-structured interviews to determine information behaviour through the study scientific workflows. Document analysis was used to generate an understanding of the underpinning concepts and fonned one of the sources of context-dependent information on which the interview questions were based. The objectives of the Sanger Institute case study were slightly different as interviews were carried out with eight scientists together with the use of participation observation, to collect data to develop a database standard for one process of their Pharmacogenomics workflow. The results indicated that AstraZeneca would benefit through upgrading their data management solutions in the laboratory and by development of resources for the storage of data from larger scale projects such as whole genome scans. These studies will also generate very large amounts of data and the analysis of these will require more sophisticated statistical methods. At the Sanger Institute a minimum information standard was reported for the manual design of primers and included in a decision making tree developed for Polymerase Chain Reactions (PCRs). This tree also illustrates problems that can be encountered when designing primers along with procedures that can be taken to address such issues.

Abstract:
The way engineers and engineering companies do their work has significantly changed over the past twenty years. This is mainly due to the simultaneous development of computers (particularly personal computers) and software. Most engineers are likely to use several engineering application programs and mainstream software packages. Hence, information from one application must be capable of being transferred into other packages for further processing or analysing and reporting or documentation purposes. This thesis aims to investigate aspects of data management and applications integration in process engineering design. It proposes a new method and model for data storage, manipulation and representation, on which new process design environments may be based. Several aspects of integrated process design database systems are examined, including data models, data handling, program control and integration. A system called PREMIS has been developed which uses an object-oriented approach to data management. It utilises templates which mimic specification sheets used in process industry for defining objects in a design environment. The use of methods promotes a consistent look and feel to the tools in the environment. The application of PREMIS to a real process engineering design example illustrates the benefits of object-oriented techniques to the process systems and design community. Templates can be manipulated as entities. They are displayed on the screen where they serve as the data input device for design information. Data on the templates and stored in the database can be shared and accessed directly by design programs. The dynamic nature of the object definitions encourages experimentation with the new data types and methods. The system also aims to demonstrate the advantages of employing advanced integration features of the Microsoft Windows operating system.

This thesis analyzes scalable information-sharing network management. It looks into one of the large problems in network management today: finding information across different network domains. Information-sharing network management is a method to solving the problem, though it is important to make it scalable. The solution proposed uses the Publish-Subscribe Internet Routing Paradigm (PSIRP) inter-domain design as the base structure. The design borrows from Border Gateway Protocol ideas and uses the Chord protocol as one of the key methods of finding information. The conclusion after analyzing the scalability of PSIRP is that its use of Chord gives it an advantage that allows a tradeoff between performance and distribution.

Engineering projects are rapidly growing in size and complexity. Computers have aided in managing project growth and solving the complexity issues to some extent. Engineering design has moved from drawing board design to computer aided design. But the process of design has changed minimally. There is still a potential for using computers to improve the design process. Engineering design projects are increasingly often being implemented by more than one firm; it is often beneficial and even necessary to collaborate. The collaboration between geographically distant branches/firms has to be achieved, as the required expertise is normally never found in one place. This research takes a look at using available computer technology for improving the engineering design collaboration and to improve the process of design. The research also takes a look the potential problems that will be encountered in a collaboration project and how to overcome them. The International Standards Organisation (ISO) procedures still insist on the complete documentation in the form of manuals or in electronic form. This documentation procedure has its advantages but the basic disadvantage lies with fact that the documentation and design are viewed as two separate processes. This research proposes a method to integrate them. This project demonstrates the feasibility of knowledge capture in the design process to aid the design engineer. The project also demonstrates rapid application prototyping using the JAVA language.

Abstract:
The recent global credit crunch? has brought sharply into focus the need for better understanding of what it takes for organisations to survive. This research seeks to help organisations maintain their viability? – the ability to maintain a separate existence and survive on their own. Whilst there are a multitude of factors that contribute to organisational viability, information can be viewed as the lifeblood of organisations. This research increases our understanding of how organisations can manage information effectively to help maintain their viability. The viable systems model (VSM) is an established modelling technique that enables the detailed analysis of organisational activity to examine how the structure and functions performed in an organisation contribute to its viability?. The VSM has been widely applied, in small/large companies, industries and governments. However, whilst the VSM concentrates on the structure and functions necessary for an organisation to be viable, it pays much less attention to information deployment in organisations. Indeed, the VSM is criticised in the literature for being unable to provide much help with detailed information and communication structures and new theories are called for to explore the way people interact and what information they need in the VSM. This research analyses qualitative data collected from four case studies to contribute to our understanding of the role that information plays in organisational viability, making three key contributions to the academic literature. In the information management literature, this research provides new insight into the roles that specific information plays in organisations. In the systems thinking literature, this research extends our understanding of the VSM and builds on its powerful diagnostic capability to provide further criteria to aid in the diagnosis of viable organisations. In the information systems literature, this research develops a framework that can be used to help organisations design more effective information systems.

Abstract:
The thesis is about an effort taken towards achieving context awareness by efficiently managing context information. The management of context spans from defining context attributes to triggering of actions resulting from a context state change. The design of the model is targeted towards creating a context aware environment for an adhoc users/services collaboration system. Contextual data are grouped and stored as profiles and database tuples depending on context themselves. The context management model gathers profile and preferences of mobile users and services and monitors changes that the entities undergo. These changes are reflected as actions on the related entities depending on the context change. The thesis proposes a design, which enables creating relationships between context attributes and deriving semantics out of them to describe a situation. Once the situation is resolved, the model identifies the tasks to be carried out in such situation and triggers relevant actions. The scope of context management model is restricted to entities that are present in a physical room. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Abstract:
More than 38% of the U.S. public workforce will likely retire by 2030, which may result in a labor shortage. Business leaders may adopt strategies to mitigate knowledge loss within their organizations by capturing knowledge in a knowledge management system (KMS). The purpose of this single case study was to explore strategies that information technology (IT) managers use to develop and implement a KMS. The target population consisted of IT managers in a small-sized organization located in northwestern Florida who had implemented a KMS successfully. The conceptual framework for this study was organizational knowledge creation theory. The collection of public documents, execution of semistructured interviews with 5 qualified participants, literature on the topic, and member checking formed the determination of the findings of the study. Using triangulation and coding the data for emergent themes, 6 themes emerged from the data analysis: (a) training, (b) customer focus, (c) policy and governance, (d) leadership and management support, (e) communication and marketing, and (f) business process management. The application of the findings may contribute to social change by identifying strategies that leaders and IT managers from communities and government agencies use in implementing a KMS that may facilitate transparency and open flow of information to citizens, and allow access to timely, civic, and potentially life-enhancing information.

Abstract:
As the usage of both BIM (Building Information Modelling) and 3D-GIS (Three-Dimensional Geographic Information Systems) has increased within the field of urban development and construction, so has the interest in connecting these two tools.  One possibility of integration is the potential of visualising BIM models together with other spatial data in 3D. Another is to be able to perform spatial 3D analyses on the models. Both of these can be achieved through use of GIS software. This study explores how integration of BIM and GIS could look. The goal was to perform typical GIS analyses in 3D on BIM models. Previous research points towards some success within the field through use of the indicated standard format for each tool – IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) for BIM and CityGML (City Geographic Markup Language) for GIS. Transformation between the formats took place through use of the BIM software Revit, the transformation tool FME and the GIS software ArcGIS. A couple of reviewed applications of GIS analyses were chosen for testing on the converted models – indoor network analysis, visibility analysis and spatial analysis for 3D buildings. The input data in the study was several BIM models, both models created for real-life usage and others that only function as sample data within the different software. From the results of the practical work it can be concluded that a simple, automated and full-scale integration does not seem to be within reach quite yet. Most transformations between IFC and CityGML failed to some extent, especially the more detailed and complex ones. In some test cases, the file could not be imported into ArcGIS and in others geometries were missing or existing even though they should not. There were also examples where geometries had been moved during the process. As a consequence of these problems, most analyses failed or did not give meaningful results. A few of the original analyses did give positive results. Combining (flawed) CityGML models with other spatial data for visualisation purposes worked rather well. Both the shadow volume and sightline analyses did also get reasonable results which indicates that there might be a future for those applications. The obstacles for a full-scale integration identified during the work were divided into four different categories. The first is BIM usage and routines where created models need to be of high quality if the final results are to be correct. The second are problems concerning the level of detail, especially the lack of common definitions for the amount of details and information. The third category concerns the connection between local and global coordinate systems where a solution in form of updates to IFC might already be in place. The fourth, and largest, category contains those surrounding the different formats and software used. Here, focus should lie on the transformation between IFC and CityGML. There are plenty of possible, future, work concerning these different problems. There is also potential in developing own tools for integration or performing different analyses than those chosen for this thesis.

Abstract:
As workplaces have become more digitalized and improvements constantly being made in order to optimize performance, it becomes pivotal for managers to understand how stress within organizations can be linked to the information- and communication technology within them. This thesis addresses the research gap of several studies existing regarding technology-related stress, but where a majority of them are quantitative in nature and overlooking the important aspect of organizational culture. The purpose of this thesis is to create an understanding regarding how managers perceive technostress in their organization, and how counterstrategies, if any, are applied. The added value of this research is that it highlights how poorly understood the problem of information overload is amongst certain managers, while highlighting the cultural aspects within organizations and their contributions to the problem. The results show that while many aspects related to information overload are noticed by managers and employees alike, very few – if any – counterstrategies exists in order to highlight and combat the problems that information overload entails. While individual practices existed, few could be realized at an organizational level without first addressing company culture.

Abstract:
This research explores two separate but related lines of enquiry - the business value of individual applications and the social and organisational impact of information systems. From this research it is clear that information systems have immense potential to change organisations. The conventional view focuses on the value that organisations can obtain through greater efficiency or new activities made possible by specific applications. But experience suggests that many organisations fail to gain the value expected. This research was started with the aim of attaining a greater understanding of the business value that information systems could offer organisations and finding ways by which organisations could assess and realise this value. The research has adopted a variety of methodological approaches and this integrating paper assesses the choices made and locates the papersin relation to the literature on information systems research methodology. The nine research papers taken together demonstrate that is business value is a complex concept and difficult to measure in practice. The research finds that the business and organisational environments are key factors in achieving the business value to be reaped from the range of benefits that each type of IS application offers. The research also demonstrates why IS evaluation practice continues to pose problems for researchers and practitioners. This integrating paper situates the work within the relevant literature on information systems research, assesses the contribution of the research papers to information systems research and concludes with a discussion of future research that flows from this work.
