Lee, Jesse Han-Leng. "Identifying users' information needs: A case of SIDC library." School of Communication & Information, Nanyang Technological University, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/105258.

Full text
Abstract:
The Securities Industry Development Centre (SIDC) is the education and training arm of the Securities Commission (SC), and the SIDC Library serves both SC staff and the securities industry. The SIDC Library is a specialised library that has its resources focused on the capital market. Identifying usersâ information needs is a first step towards analysing the information needs of SIDC Library members and the SC staff. The study was motivated by the fact that an analysis of information needs help identify the SIDC Library resources for further development to ensure the delivery of information services matches usersâ needs. In this paper, we would like to share a study that was conducted to analyse how the SIDC Library services were tailored to meet the information needs of users. By studying this aspect, we will be able to see how the library defines and classifies its user types, and addresses issues impacting information services through proper operation planning and practices. The respondents for this paper were mainly SIDC Library members and SC staff. The result of the study is based on a collection of survey questionnaires, personal interviews and records of user requests for documents. From this study, a profile of user information needs was established; enabling the library management to identify, support and provide an efficient delivery mechanism for meeting usersâ information needs. This study helped SIDC librarians identify the kind of information that was needed and generated, and to support those which are not readily available by further developing a comprehensive new subject/collection of SIDC Library information resources. This will also provide an insight into the users' expectations on content resources and services of the SIDC Library, as well as for developing library user education programmes. Thus, the study of usersâ information needs is one tool that enables SIDC Librarians to discover, evaluate, implement, maintain and improve its management of information resources.

Caiafa, M. M. "Information needs along the journey chain : users' perspective about bus system." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2010. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/20445/.

Full text
Abstract:
Buses constitute the main public transport mode in most cities of the world. Accessible Bus Systems are defined as systems that are easy to use. However accessible the infrastructure may be, it is unlikely to provide access if people cannot know about it. Therefore it is essential to have comprehensive and accessible information systems which describe the bus systems during all the stages of the journey. There is a widespread understanding amongst researchers that Information Systems can increase the efficiency of the system and that they should be oriented to meet bus users’ needs. However, existing information systems largely ignore the user’s point of view, in special the requirement of the disabled users. This thesis describes a methodology developed to investigate the problem of using information during a journey by bus in real conditions taking into account the (un)familiarity of the area in study and the individual’s previous knowledge of information system. Two main aspects are identified — the “Required Environment Capability” (the physical, social and psychological environment conditions) and the “Individual Capability Provided” (the individual ability in physical, sensorial and cognitive terms) to plan and execute a journey by bus in an unfamiliar environment. Because of the multidisciplinary aspect of the theme this study uses approaches from different fields of research to construct a methodology to understand individual information use. Based on the principles of Single Case Analysis adapted by adding the concept of the Capabilities Model (CM) (which explores interactions between individual and environment), the combined SCA/CM approach was employed to construct the INFOChain experiment. A set of information pieces were developed for the experiment, delivering Accessibility- Issues (AI-type) information in order to help older people to plan and execute different bus journeys in two different cities: London/UK and Brasilia/BR. General results have shown that although the AI-Type of information is considered important by older people, it needs more than simple expositions to actually take advantages of the information and be able to help disabled users.

Sambo, Precious Kholomile. "Investigating information needs of library users : a case of Bushbuckridge Community Library." Thesis, University of Limpopo, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10386/2253.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (M.Inf.) --University of Limpopo, 2018
The purpose of this research is to investigate the information needs of rural communities in Bushbuckridge. Investing information of communities is vital because information plays an important role in enabling communities to meet their development needs, such as employment, education, health, safety, food security, and leisure. Libraries are therefore instrumental in helping library users to meet these needs. The study utilised triangulated (quantitative) and (qualitative) research methods. Participants in this study included 100 library users, four librarians and one library manager drawn from four local libraries through a combination of random (probability) and purposive (non-probability) sampling. The quantitative part of the study i.e. survey measured the perceptions of users on library services through questionnaires, while unstructured interviews elicited the experiences of librarians in addressing the information needs of library users in the four libraries of Bushbuckridge. Findings from the survey revealed, inter alia, that: most (65%) users had access to library services, although high travelling costs were a major barrier for those living in remote villages; a large number of users (60%) still depended on librarians to help them find information, while a growing number of users (33% had begun using computers and the internet to meet their information needs; the most important reasons for using the library were: assignments, study and careers, and, the majority of users in all four libraries were generally satisfied with the quality of the services rendered, although significant improvements were required in the supply of materials and water. Findings from interviews with librarians demonstrated that significant steps had been taken to address information needs of users across the four libraries. Common examples include: books and materials; computers and internet services; study groups; user training, and outreach programmes – although these were hampered by shortage of staff and vehicles. Cross-cutting problems included delays in purchasing of library materials; shortage of water and low perceptions about the benefits of library services in the community. In light of these results, it was concluded that information needs of library users had been partially met, with greater room for improvement in areas like human resources, information technology, transport and procurement systems and processes. The research findings have demonstrated that if provided well, library information services may help reduce the challenges of illiteracy, poverty and unemployment in this area. In light of these findings, the study recommended, inter alia, that the skills of library staff along with procurement systems and processes be upgraded in order to satisfy the information needs of library users in the study area. The study further recommended that outreach programmes be scaled up to increase awareness in the community about the role and benefits of library services in facilitating community development, particularly in Bushbuckridge where challenges of illiteracy, poverty and unemployment continue unabated.

McMillan, Tyson DeShaun. "Web Information Behaviors of Users Interacting with a Metadata Navigator." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2013. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc407784/.

Full text
Abstract:
The web information behaviors of users as they interacted with a metadata navigator, the Personal Information (PI) Agent, and reflected upon their interaction experiences were studied. The process included studying the complete iterative (repeated) cycle of information needs, information seeking, and information use of users interacting with an internet-based prototype metadata PI Agent tool. Detlor’s theory of web information behaviors of organizational users was utilized as a theoretical foundation for studying human-information interactions via the PI Agent tool. The qualitative research design allowed for the use of triangulation within the context of a one-group pretest-posttest design. Triangulation occurred in three phases: (a) observe, (b) collect, and (c) reflect. Observations were made as participants solved three problem situations. Participants’ computer log and print screen data were collected, and follow-up interviews were conducted once all posttest sessions ended to enable users to reflect on their experiences. The three triangulation phases ensured saturation of data and greater depth regarding the participants’ information behaviors. Content analysis occurred via exploratory pattern analysis using the posttest Problem Steps Recorder (PSR) log data and on the six interviewees’ follow-up interview data. Users engaged in iterative cycles of information needs, information seeking, and information use to resolve the presented problem situations. The participants utilized the PI Agent tool iteratively to eliminate their knowledge gaps regarding the presented problem situations. This study was the first to use PSR log data for capturing evidence of the iterative search process as defined by Detlor. The implications for best practices were inspired by participant feedback, and recommendations for further study are made.

Abstract:
Within any ecosystem, information needs are shared to be fulfilled and to support the ecosystem in a way or another. They are vital for designing appropriate information systems that will provide those needs. In this thesis, the gravel road ecosystem is studied, where efficient information sharing is not enabled due to the lack of appropriate information systems. Thus, when focusing on the gravel roads ecosystem, information plays a crucial role regarding the maintenance acts upon these roads. Moreover, not enough literature investigates theinformation needs of gravel roads stakeholders with the aim to improve the maintenance ofthese roads. Therefore, this thesis intends to elicit information needs of gravel road stakeholders by performing an exploratory case study. The case study forms a part of an ongoing project with the goal to build a cloud-based information system for a sustainable gravel road maintenance. Data were collected through telephone- and online-based interviews with several key stakeholders in Sweden and were thereafter structured through template analysis. The major findings were a set of information needs and several needed sensors within the pre-mentioned information system. This thesis concluded that the future cloud-based information system in the ongoing project is a useful system for sharing vital information among future gravel roads stakeholders, considering the variety of needed information that affects the maintenance of the gravel roads.

Powell, John Antony. "Consumers and information : an assessment of the health information needs of mental healthcare users and the role of the Internet." Thesis, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (University of London), 2004. http://researchonline.lshtm.ac.uk/682324/.

Full text
Abstract:
Background Significant resources are used to produce health information but little is known about consumer information needs, particularly in mental healthcare. The Internet is increasingly being used, particularly for mental health topics. Methods Literature reviews in the areas of health information needs and the role of the Internet in healthcare; in-depth interviews to explore the experience of mental health users with health information and with the Internet; and a population survey to investigate the interview findings and provide generalisable data on information needs. Results There is very little existing research in the area of mental health information needs. Much of the literature around consumer use of the Internet for health information focuses on issues of quality and access. The most common information needs were: what the problem is; what treatments are available; how to help oneself; where to get help from; what has caused the problem; and the future course of the problem. The sources of information considered most accurate and most likely to be used were general practitioners and mental health professionals. The Internet was not ranked highly for accuracy, but was one of the sources likely to be used. The presence of mental health distress was significantly associated with the use of the Internet for mental health information, after adjustment for age, sex and educational level. Another need is to hear about the experience of others, and this was a particular role for the Internet. This need can be subdivided into 'universality', 'installation of hope', and 'empathy and understanding'. Conclusions and implications Mental healthcare users are poorly served by current health information provision. The results provide support for a stronger practitioner-patient partnership. Policymakers should address the needs identified in this work, including the need to hear about other people's experience. Further research investigating health-related use of the Internet is required.

Hassan, Basri B. "Using electronic information resources : a study of end-user training needs and methods in selected public university libraries in Malaysia." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2002. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/6974.

Full text
Abstract:
This research investigated the library end-users' perceptions of their training needs in relation to using the electronic information resources in selected public universities in Malaysia. It also investigated the training methods preferred by end-users in learning how to use electronic information resources. The subjects of the study were university students and academic staff from three selected public universities in Malaysia. They comprised 433 students and 223 academic staff. This study employed both quantitative and qualitative methods. The main data was gathered through self-administered questionnaires, while the supplementary data was gathered through face-to-face semi-structured interviews. Opinions from the librarians responsible for end-user training at the three university libraries were also sought through face-to-face semi-structured interviews. Comparisons were made between the two groups of end-users, namely, students and academic staff in areas related to the problems of the study. Appropriate non-parametric statistical techniques such as cross-tabulation, chisquare test, Mann-Whitney U test and Spearman correlation test were applied in analysing the data measured at both nominal and ordinal scales. Among the major findings were: (1) a statistically significant differences were found between students and academic staff in terms of knowledge and ability in using electronic information resources. Many academic staff were more knowledgable and able to use electronic information resources than students. However, concerning knowledge in using certain IT facilities, many more students than academic staff knew how to use them; and (2) both students and academic staff preferred one-to-one training methods as their first choice. With regard to the second choice of training method, students preferred computerassisted instruction (CAI), while academic staff preferred library workshops with hands-on training. Recommendations based on the research findings were made.

Abstract:
Museums and libraries are considered large repositories of human knowledge and human culture. They have similar missions and goals in distributing accumulated knowledge to society. Current digitization projects allow both, museums and libraries to reach a broader audience, share their resources with a variety of users. While studies of information seeking behavior, retrieval systems and metadata in library science have a long history; such research studies in museum environments are at their early experimental stage. There are few studies concerning information seeking behavior and needs of virtual museum visitors, especially with the use of images in the museums' collections available on the Web. The current study identifies preferences of a variety of user groups about the information specifics on current exhibits, museum collections metadata information, and the use of multimedia. The study of information seeking behavior of users groups of museum digital collections or cultural collections allows examination and analysis of users' information needs, and the organization of cultural information, including descriptive metadata and the quantity of information that may be required. In addition, the study delineates information needs that different categories of users may have in common: teachers in high schools, students in colleges and universities, museum professionals, art historians and researchers, and the general public. This research also compares informational and educational needs of real visitors with the needs of virtual visitors. Educational needs of real visitors are based on various studies conducted and summarized by Falk and Dierking (2000), and an evaluation of the art museum websites previously conducted to support the current study.

Abstract:
This thesis explores how to design for the visually impaired. During the course of work, a literature study and interviews with blind and visually impaired people were conducted. The objective was to investigate what contextual information is wanted in new and unfamiliar spaces outside their home. The interviews also explored how they experience digital tools they are using today and what they think of the possibilities of voice and other user interfaces. The main finding from the study is that there are indications that multimodal interfaces are preferred. The interface should combine voice, haptic and graphics since the participants wanted to interact in different ways depending on functionality and context. Three main problem areas were identified, navigation, public transportation and shopping. Another result was that when developing for the visually impaired it should always be tested on people with a wide variation of vision loss to find the correct contextual information.

Al-Daihani, Sultan M. M. "Information behaviour of Kuwaiti legal professionals." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2003. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7600.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis reports results of a research study into the information behaviour of Kuwaiti legal professionals. The main aims of the research were to investigate the information behaviour and the information needs of Kuwaiti legal professionals, and examine whether the existing legal information sources and services meet their needs. The theoretical framework for this research was derived from the investigation of information behaviour in general, and studies of legal professionals in particular. Wilson's (1996) model of information behaviour was also used to develop the conceptual framework of this research. This model takes into account four types of information seeking behaviour: active search, passive search, passive attention and ongoing search. This model helped in formulating research questions and hypotheses and the design of data collections methods. It was used also as a tool for organising the interpretation and discussion of the research findings. The research methods were designed from a user-centred perspective, including using data collection methods that are supportive of user-centred research. Triangulation was used in data collection by the use of questionnaires, interviews and critical incidents technique. The participants of the research included legal academics, legal practitioners such as state lawyers, prosecutors and private lawyers, law librarians, legal publishers and legal database producers in Kuwait. The results showed that a personal collection is the source used most by Kuwaiti legal professionals. The majority did not use electronic sources such as databases and the Internet. A large percentage also did not use law libraries. The majority of academics sought information themselves, whereas the majority of practitioners relied on the assistance of others. The majority of respondents had no training on the use of information sources. The majority also relied on internal communication as a channel for information exchange more than external communication. The majority of respondents scanned between one or two journals, although journals should be among the major information sources for legal professionals. On the other hand, newspapers ranked first for serendipity for both academics and practitioners. New books were ranked as a first source by practitioners for updating information, whereas journals were ranked first for academics. These results showed the information seeking problems of the legal professionals. This led to the development of the interface requirement for the design of a prototype Kuwaiti Legal Information System (KLIS) interface. The aim of the system was to provide relevant and up-to-date information, and links to other information sources and services in order to improve communication channels at both national and international level. The system also sought to be cost-effective. Finally, a heuristic usability evaluation was undertaken by consulting a number of experts on the system's usability and contents. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations for further research and to stakeholders are made.

Full text
Abstract:
Consolidating patient and clinical data to support better-informed clinical decisions remains a primary function of electronic health records (EHRs). In the United States, nearly 6 million patients receive care from an accountable care organization (ACO). Knowledge of clinical decision support (CDS) tool design for use by physicians participating in ACOs remains limited. The purpose of this quantitative study was to examine whether a significant correlation exists between characteristics of alert content and alert timing (the independent variables) and physician perceptions of improved ACO quality measure adherence during electronic ordering (the dependent variable). Sociotechnical theory supported the theoretical framework for this research. Sixty-nine physician executives using either a Cerner Incorporated or Epic Systems EHR in a hospital or health system affiliated ACO participated in the online survey. The results of the regression analysis were statistically significant, R2 = .108, F(2,66) = 3.99, p = .023, indicating that characteristics of alert content and timing affect physician perceptions for improving their adherence to ACO quality measures. However, analysis of each independent variable showed alert content highly correlated with the dependent variable (p = .007) with no significant correlation found between workflow timing and the dependent variable (p = .724). Understanding the factors that support physician acceptance of alerts is essential to third-party software developers and health care organizations designing CDS tools. Providing physicians with improved EHR-integrated CDS tools supports the population health goal of ACOs in delivering better patient care.

Woodley, Alan Paul. "NLPX : a natural language query interface for facilitating user-oriented XML-IR." Queensland University of Technology, 2008. http://eprints.qut.edu.au/16642/.

Full text
Abstract:
Most information retrieval (IR) systems respond to users' representation of their information needs (queries) with a ranked list of relevant results, usually text documents. XML documents di er from traditional text documents by explicitly separating structure and content. XML-IR systems aim to exploit this separation by searching and retrieving relevant components of documents (called elements) rather than entire documents thereby, better ful lling users' information needs. Despite the potential bene t of XML-IR systems, most research in this area has not been centered on the needs of users. In particular, current XML-IR query formation interfaces, namely keywords-only and formal language, are not able to optimally address the needs of users. Keywords-only interfaces are too unsophisticated to fully capture the users' complex information needs that contain both content and structural requirements. In contrast, while formal languages are able to capture users' content and structural requirements they are too di cult to use, even for experts, and are too closely tied to the physical structure of the collection. This thesis presents a solution to these problems by presenting NLPX, a natural language interface for XML-IR systems. NLPX allows users to enter XML-IR queries in natural language and translates them into a formal language (NEXI) to be processed by existing XML retrieval systems. When evaluated by system testing, NLPX outperformed alternative translation approaches. When tested in a user-based experiment, NLPX performed comparably to a query-by-template interface, the baseline user-oriented interface for formulating structured queries. It is hoped that the outcomes of this thesis will help to refocus the eld of XML-IR around the user. This will lead to the development of more useful XML-IR systems, which will hopefully result in the more widespread use of XML-IR systems.

Abstract:
Bibliography: pages [83]-89.
One of the basic needs of both information systems practitioners and academics is in determining what skills and knowledge staff need in order to be able to perform adequately in their jobs (Nelson : 1991). This study was concerned with the information technology and information systems learning needs of two distinct classes of personnel; end users and information systems personnel. More specifically, it examines the perceptions that each group has of the other's particular deficiencies. It also compares the importance that each group accords to skill or knowledge in particular items for their counterparts, and how these expectations match their counterparts' own perceptions of item importance. The study was thus concerned with cross-perceptions; the perceptions that each group has of the other. This study examined these perceptions by means of the analytical survey method. The research instrument used was an adapted version of an instrument previously validated and used by Nelson (1991). The research instrument was completed by 168 employees within ten different organizations. The findings suggest that within six different areas of knowledge and skill both end user and IS personnel perceived their counterparts to be most deficient in the area of general IS knowledge; particularly in knowledge of the fit between IS and the organization, the potential uses of IS/IT within the organization, and in the use of IS for competitive advantage. In addition, both groups of personnel perceived their counterparts to be particularly deficient ii') their ability to communicate effectively. The deficiency in general IS knowledge was aggravated by the finding that both groups expect their counterparts to carry more of the responsibility for knowledge in general IS matters than their counterparts appear willing to assume. The implication of this mismatch of expectations is that it must first be resolved by clarifying the respective roles and responsibilities of both end user and IS personnel before the deficiencies themselves can be dealt with.

The aim of this study is to develop an information model for representing people’s needs in charity organizations of Saudi Arabia. The target population are the charity organizations that are concerned with donations gathering and distribution to their constituents. The aim of this study is achieved through three objectives; the first objective is to identify the current state of information systems use in the sector of charity organizations. The second objective is to identify the information needs of those charity organizations with regard to their constituents. By using the sense-making theory and its set of methods, we were able to understand the informational needs from the perspective of the users themselves. The third objective is to match the resulting sets of informational needs of charity organizations with the dimensions of human development needs by Narayan et al., (2000) which was researched to inform the World Development report on Poverty and Development. This study is significant because it was not conducted in that scale or scope before, and it provides a clear picture of the current state of information systems use in the sector, it also provides a research informed model, which will help better fulfill the needs of the poor people registered at those charities. The information needs model resulting from this study provides a valuable building block for a future information system, which is based on research data to improve efficiency, reliability and accountability in donations management for the wellbeing of the constituent. The data for this research was collected through two studies, the first study was targeted at the whole population of charity organizations through an electronic survey, and the final case number was 83 charities. This study aimed at investigating the current state of information systems use at charity organizations, respondents answered 18 questions divided in four sections. The first section was about the organization’s profile. The second was about information systems for constituents and donations. The third was about the constituents. The fourth, was additional information about adaptation of future IS. The second study was an interview with 15 charity organizations from Riyadh region. They included masculine and feminine charities, and charities of different localities such as village and small-city. This study used the sense-making theory byPage 2 of 2Brenda Dervin to investigate the information needs from the user’s perspective at the charity with regard to constituents and donations. The interviews were conducted face-to-face with each single case in the second study. The results of this research show that the use of information systems at charities is widespread, with 89.2% of charities using an IS in some or all work processes. It also revealed the diversity of processes in which charities employee IS, comprising 4 major themes and 22 distinct work processes. It also revealed that the information needs of charity organizations has seven distinct sets, and each set included between 2 and 19 information gaps. The results also show that the information needs of charities has a great coverage of the wellbeing dimensions of the World Development report of 2000/2001, spanning from 50% to 100% coverage. It also revealed that the number of all information sources, which could bridge the information gaps, are 18 sources spread across five sectors in the country. The information needs model for representing people’s needs was a result of the combination and analysis of all research findings to develop that model. It has nine dimensions of information and its corresponding data inputs, leading to the desired knowledge about the constituent. The model covers all aspects of the life of the constituent and can be modified by individual charities to satisfy their own objectives and to lead to new and relevant knowledge

Abstract:
Near Field Communication (NFC) approach may be seen as a perspective way to improve user experience of quick data access with mobile devices to various services (secure payments, information exchange between users, etc.) in a city. This thesis concerns the topic of challenges which may be faced by interaction designers using this approach for creating a context-aware mobile solution for personalized data access in service-intensive urban environments. This research is based on considerations from researches, which explored which mobile information needs in particular seemed to be relevant for a modern user. Moreover, affordances and design blends concept are discussed in this work through a prism of the human-computer interaction in a city. ‘Research through design’ concept allowed performing the investigation of the given problem, starting from a user research, followed by prototyping an alternative solution and after - user evaluation of the prototype. Finally, a critical overview of the performed research gives suggestions for further improvement of the project.

Abstract:
This thesis is a critical examination of the history of philosophies governing public education in the United States. The first half, chapters one through six, outlines American conceptions of the role of the school in relation to the state and to democracy. The second half is an account of critical progressive philosophies that have challenged the American status-quo since the independence. The main argument that I propose here is that the creation of an education system in America has followed the philosophies of federalism and private democracy. These philosophies are economically centered and define the citizen in economic terms. Progressive educators have long questioned this definition and seek to redefine citizenship to describe participatory democracy, and communication based on experience and an ethic of care.

The use of information is an indispensable practice to any individual and as such, it is also essential to the professionals of education, especially teachers. Hence the importance of the issue here exposed being made clear by the fact of these professionals need of information for the development of their teaching practices. The present research on "Needs and use of information in the practice of science teachers" aims to analyze the needs and use of information of teachers from the urban area of the municipality of Santa Rita - PB. In that sense, the following question arises: What are the needs and use of information for science teachers in their teaching practices? An alternative approach of the Users´ Studies was used in this research, and the Sense-Making model was prioritized for offering through universal categories of cognitive metaphor, the situation (need for information), gap (cognitive emptiness), and use (informational help to bridge the cognitive emptiness), the logical way for meeting the research objectives. This is a descriptive field research, with a propositional nature. The population is consisted of 28 science teachers, distributed in schools in the urban areas of the municipality of Santa Rita. As an instrument of data collection, the mixed questionnaire was used. Data analysis, of qualitative and quantitative basis, shows that the study group is composed of qualified teachers who prioritize the post-graduation demonstrating interest in being updated for the practice of teaching. Although acknowledging the difficulties of the profession, most teachers manifest satisfaction and teach for pleasure in self-fulfillment. With emphasis on the categories of the Sense-Making, situation-gap-use, the situation reveals that teachers are constantly seeking to meet their information needs through the Internet, books, and educational videos, among others. In the gaps, barriers of time, language, terminology and quality of information were the most displayed, but they developed strategies that minimized the difficulties and could make use of the information. The use of information was centered on the development of teaching activities and the teachers were satisfied with it because it solved their informational problem. Actions to contribute to a better performance of the studied teachers about those questions in their teaching and pedagogical practices were proposed. We conclude that the development of the research contributed to the basis of the Science of Information, which is to provide information and impart knowledge to those who need it, making this the social responsibility in this area of knowledge, as well as in Education, when it makes itself responsible for the challenge of educating a society. Studying the teachers´ information needs and how they guide the search process and the use of information to satisfy their informational needs towards teaching practice, was assigned as a process of great value.

Abstract:
Over the last decade, the rapid growth and adoption of the World Wide Web has further exacerbated user needs for e±cient mechanisms for information and knowledge location, selection, and retrieval. How to gather useful and meaningful information from the Web becomes challenging to users. The capture of user information needs is key to delivering users' desired information, and user pro¯les can help to capture information needs. However, e®ectively acquiring user pro¯les is di±cult. It is argued that if user background knowledge can be speci¯ed by ontolo- gies, more accurate user pro¯les can be acquired and thus information needs can be captured e®ectively. Web users implicitly possess concept models that are obtained from their experience and education, and use the concept models in information gathering. Prior to this work, much research has attempted to use ontologies to specify user background knowledge and user concept models. However, these works have a drawback in that they cannot move beyond the subsumption of super - and sub-class structure to emphasising the speci¯c se- mantic relations in a single computational model. This has also been a challenge for years in the knowledge engineering community. Thus, using ontologies to represent user concept models and to acquire user pro¯les remains an unsolved problem in personalised Web information gathering and knowledge engineering. In this thesis, an ontology learning and mining model is proposed to acquire user pro¯les for personalised Web information gathering. The proposed compu- tational model emphasises the speci¯c is-a and part-of semantic relations in one computational model. The world knowledge and users' Local Instance Reposito- ries are used to attempt to discover and specify user background knowledge. From a world knowledge base, personalised ontologies are constructed by adopting au- tomatic or semi-automatic techniques to extract user interest concepts, focusing on user information needs. A multidimensional ontology mining method, Speci- ¯city and Exhaustivity, is also introduced in this thesis for analysing the user background knowledge discovered and speci¯ed in user personalised ontologies. The ontology learning and mining model is evaluated by comparing with human- based and state-of-the-art computational models in experiments, using a large, standard data set. The experimental results are promising for evaluation. The proposed ontology learning and mining model in this thesis helps to develop a better understanding of user pro¯le acquisition, thus providing better design of personalised Web information gathering systems. The contributions are increasingly signi¯cant, given both the rapid explosion of Web information in recent years and today's accessibility to the Internet and the full text world.

his study approaches the topic of information literacy in the Health area, specifically at the environment of the sectoral specialized library linked to the Clementino Fraga Filho University Hospital from UFRJ. These two units – library and hospital – consisted in the empirical research field, whose description included historical aspects dating back to the origins of the configuration of both of them and how they work now a days. The library environment has important elements, such as social actors - librarian and user -, the provided services, the most used sources of information stressing “the systematic review” on its importance and specificity. The theoretical operators whose examination resulted in literature search have undertaken databases of Brazilian and international areas of health sciences, information science and some multidisciplinary databases are listed as well: information literacy, interaction, covering information needs, mediation and referral service. The methods adopted were the documentary research and participant observation, whose employment required in the first case the search and use of technical reports, inquiry forms and other materials produced by the library management. In the second case, the notes taken in the field diary were used, created to record facts observed during the survey or remembered and recorded on this instrument. To demonstrate the complexity inherent in the process of achieving literacy by the user, according to the research objectives, this work elected illustrations of different demands for information. Taken as emblematic cases, they imply in understanding and meeting the requirements inherent to the peculiarities of information resources used. The process consists of learning what is here meant as obtaining information literacy. This, once achieved, will lead to greater autonomy and skills development for the user to see fulfilled their information needs.

Abstract:
In recent years, the global interest in esports has grown exponentially, opening up for new technologies and products to be developed. One example is esports platforms which serve players with a common place to carry out their esports-related activities. This study utilizes current research about motivation and user engagement to develop three conceptual design proposals aiming to showcase how appropriate gamification components could be incorporated into an esports platform in order to deepen user engagement. These conceptual designs are evaluated by conducting a focus group, in which the participants had expert knowledge in the fields of esports, user experience, technology, and game design. Based on the results, conceptual design guidelines are established, and two final conceptual designs are proposed. With these two final designs, this study aims to contribute to and inspire future design work within the field of gamification and esports.

Abstract:
Mestrado em Comunicação Multimédia
The presented research elicits the behaviour, needs and desires, in addition to future needs, of tourists during the tourist experience through the use of trains in Belgium, with a focus on the future creation of a mobile application that supports not only the collection and use of information during the train trip, but also some factors related to the anticipation and on-site experience. Three different qualitative user research methodologies were planned and carried out: observations, focus group interviews and board games as generative tool. In addition, Personas and context scenarios were developed in order to start bridging the research-design gap. This study was developed during a mobility program between University of Aveiro and Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. It is written in English, which represented a challenge to the researcher, who is Brazilian and has Portuguese as the mother tongue.

Abstract:
Research shows children in an online environment often search by browsing, which relies heavily on recognition and content knowledge, so catalog systems for children must use effective symbols or pictorial representations, which correspond with children's own cognitive schema and level of recognition knowledge. This study was designed to look at the success of young children (ages 5 to 8) in searching 3 online public library catalogs designed for them, and it focused specifically on the pictorial representations and text descriptors used in the systems' browsing hierarchy. The research sought answer whether young children (ages 5 to 8) are really poor searchers because of cognitive development and lack of technology skills or if system design is the major reason for poor search results; i.e., Do current children's online catalog designs function in a manner that is compatible with information seeking by children? Although these results can not be generalized, this study indicates that there was a disconnect between the cognitive abilities of young users and catalog design. The study looked at search success on the 3 catalogs in relation to the catalog characteristics and individual user characteristics and makes 3 significant contributions to the field of library and information science. The first contribution is the modification of an existing model posed by Cooper and O'Connor and modified by Abbas (2002). The second significant contribution is the proposal of a new model, Creel's second best choice (SBC) model, that addresses the cognitive gap and design flaws that impact the choices participants made. The third significant contribution is that this study addresses and fills a gap in the literature.

The objective of this thesis is to build an integrative model of search behavior and use of information based on the models of Ellis (1989), Krikelas (1983), Kuhlthau (1991), Taylor (1986) and Wilson (1981, 1996 and 1999) and validate it through the application with the information of users not specialized in healthcare (patients, except for students and professionals). The theoretical foundation came from the study of these models, as well as specialized literature in relation to the identification of information needs, search processes and use of information, in addition to addressing the concepts of Information and Health Science, as well as behavioral studies from theoretical psychology area. Through a phenomenological study, we build an integration of models and consolidate the final proposal for a single integrative model of search behavior and use of information. For validation, interviews were conducted in-depth and technical application of the critical incident with General Hospital patients of the Dr. Carls César de Oliveira, in Fortaleza. The theoretical and practical research presented validates the integrative model of search behavior and use of the proposed information as a tool to identify regularities about the search behavior and use of information unskilled users in healthcare and is also capable of application in the study of other audiences, characterized as a general model of search behavior and use of information. This statement stems from the fact that all aspects, phases and stages of the information behavior of the subjects in this study fall (are represented) in the integrative model built, being able to bring these results: the subjects of this research feel the need for information as soon realize a disease in themselves or a family member; they throw themselves in the search for information immediately, even without knowing formal sources of information in the area, through the Web, performing Google searches through popular terms and description of symptoms; at the beginning of the search, they feel insecure for not knowing the most effective words to use in the search strategies, but rely on Google's capability to provide information they deem relevant; they don´t admit, but prefer informal sources of information, which spread testimonials from others who have experienced the same health problems, and are able to identify drugs; there are users who only seek medical attention when they can not find treatment and healing on their own Web; there are users who seek information to better understand and talk about her condition with the doctor; they have urgency in the search for information because they rush in curing the disease not only because of the physical nuisance they cause, but also for fear of losing their jobs due to the delivery of medical certificates and away from social contact with family and friends; the Web is used as a means of access to information that is used for self-diagnosis and self-medication. Research on the search behavior and use of information made from the application of integrative model will bring wider results and provide scientific inputs that can be used by managers of information units at the planning and implementation of products and services.

Information is considered an indispensable phenomenon to man‟s life and survival, and the association between this phenomenon and the human being is very relevant and significant because it is an object of research and study in many areas of knowledge. For a better comprehension about this phenomenon and its connection with the human being, a research was developed to analyze the necessities and uses of information of the doctors in the Family Health Units of Distrito Sanitário III, in João Pessoa PB. The mentioned research used the assumptions of the information user studies, under the egis of the Modern Paradigm and the Sense-Making methodological approach. The sample is formed by 28 doctors linked to the Family Health Units. Moreover, the data collection tools were questionnaire and interview. The results revealed that the doctors can satisfy their necessities of information by using the Internet and books. However, they face obstacles in relation to the use of information like the lack of time, which is the most frequent. Furthermore, they cheer up to use the information in the Health Units and, in an incipient way, they give meaning and sense to the obtained information. Therefore, it can be concluded that the trinomial situation-gap-use, which are professed by the Sense-Making, is evident in the quotidian of the Family Health Units doctors, relative to the necessity, inquiry and use of information

Beattie, Diane Lynn. "The informational needs of historians researching women : an archival user study." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/26047.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the informational needs of historians researching women as a subject in archives. The research methodology employed combines two types of user studies, the questionnaire and the reference analysis, in order to determine both the use and usefulness of archival materials and finding aids for historians researching women. This study begins with an overview of the literature on user studies. The thesis then outlines both the kinds of materials and the information historians researching women require. Finally, this study looks at the way historians researching women locate relevant materials and concomitantly the effectiveness of current descriptive policies and practices in dealing with the needs of this research group. This thesis concludes by suggesting a number of ways in which archivists can respond to the informational needs of historians researching women in archives. Firstly, a considerable amount of documentation relevant to the study of women remains to be acquired by archival repositories. While archives should continue to acquire textual materials, more emphasis needs to be placed upon the acquisition of non-textual materials since these materials are also very useful to historians researching women in archives. Secondly, archivists must focus more attention on the informational value of their holdings since the majority of historians researching women are interested in the information the records contain about people, events or subject area and not the description of institutional life contained in records. Thirdly this study demonstrates the need for more subject oriented finding aids. Archivists can improve subject access to their holdings through the preparation of thematic guides, by the creation of more analytical inventory descriptions and by indexing or cataloguing women's records.

Abstract:
Intelligent interaction between humans and computers has been a dream of artificial intelligence since the beginning of digital era and one of the original motivations behind the creation of artificial intelligence. A key step towards the achievement of such an ambitious goal is to enable the Question Answering systems understand the information need of the user. In this thesis, we attempt to enable the QA system's ability to understand the user's information need by three approaches. First, an clarification question generation method is proposed to help the user clarify the information need and bridge information need gap between QA system and the user. Next, a translation based model is obtained from the large archives of Community Question Answering data, to model the information need behind a question and boost the performance of question recommendation. Finally, a fine-grained classification framework is proposed to enable the systems to recommend answered questions based on information need satisfaction.

Abstract:
The fast growth of wireless networking and mobile computing devices has enabled us to access information from anywhere at any time. However, varying user needs and system resource constraints are two major heterogeneity factors that pose a challenge to information sharing systems. For instance, when a new information item is produced, different users may have different requirements for when the new value should become visible. The resources that each device can contribute to such information sharing applications also vary. Therefore, how to enable information sharing across computing platforms with varying resources to meet different user demands is an important problem for distributed systems research. In this thesis, we address the heterogeneity challenge faced by such systems. We assume that shared information is encapsulated in distributed objects, and we use object replication to increase system scalability and robustness, which introduces the consistency problem. Many consistency models have been proposed in recent years but they are either too strong and do not scale very well, or too weak to meet many users' requirements. We propose a Mixed Consistency (MC) model as a solution. We introduce an access constraints based approach to combine both strong and weak consistency models together. We also propose a MC protocol that combines existing implementations together with minimum modifications. It is designed to tolerate crash failures and slow processes/communication links in the system. We also explore how the heterogeneity challenge can be addressed in the transportation layer by developing an agile dissemination protocol. We implement our MC protocol on top of a distributed publisher-subscriber middleware, Echo. We finally measure the performance of our MC implementation. The results of the experiments are consistent with our expectations. Based on the functionality and performance of mixed consistency protocols, we believe that this model is effective in addressing the heterogeneity of user requirements and available resources in distributed systems.

Abstract:
In my study regarding gynecological examination, it turned out that women generally have a positive attitude to being examined gynecologically, but the experience is not the same as the situation can be experienced as omission. It also emerged that they experienced the feeling of stress and anxiety of exposing the sex. The solution to the women's experience in this problem only highlighted the gynecologist's approach or product design. Something that is increasing worldwide is the knowledge of the importance of the physical aspects of the environment for the patient in a care environment. Design and architecture are increasingly used in the design of care environments. What has emerged in many researches is that the patient's health has found well-being when the room has been designed according to the user's needs. This is a degree project in information design with a focus on spatial design. The purpose of the work has been to investigate, together with users, the gynecologist's experience, challenges and potential solutions together with theories, methods and previous research. Subsequently, a design proposal in the form of a concept has emerged, which can improve the room experience for the patient, which gynecologists can take part in when designing gynecological rooms.

Abstract:
Information needs studies provide a methodology to investigate, systematically, the characteristics of users in relation to the information they need to develop their work. Also it provides criteria for making decisions when planning new information systems or adapting the existing ones. This thesis focuses on information needs studies in hospital setting and has developed two complementary strategies. First, it has established a theoretical framework to guide research in this field. This has been an exhaustively searched of published information on the matter by providing the procedure to be used. Of retrieved papers, it has conducted the analysis of both production and contents. Secondly, a study has been made of the doctorâ s information needs in the Hospital Clinico Universitario in Valencia and the critical incident methodology has been used for data collection.

Abstract:
Over the past few years, across many industrial sectors, Information Systems (IS) developed with the help of agile methods have become the rule rather than the exception. Because of their high flexibility, such Agile IS development methodologies help firms to keep pace with emerging market requirements. At the same time, customers are also gaining increasing market power due to an expanding digitalization of services and products, which decreases switching barriers and increases transparency. As a result, it has become crucial for firms to develop IS that continuously provide sufficient value to customers. This is one of the main reasons why firms regularly deliver increments of Agile IS for users to update outdated software versions. By doing so, firms try to bind and engage customers lastingly to capture current and future revenue streams and stay competitive. Agile IS and software updates (that deliver increments of Agile IS to users) have been researched thoroughly, however mostly from a technical point of view. Nevertheless, because updates change a system while it is already in use, they have the potential to impact users’ beliefs, attitudes, behaviors, and in particular, loyalty to a software in the post-adoption phase. However, despite the importance of better understanding user responses to Agile IS to provide an adequate theoretical framework, research from a user’s perspective on Agile IS, and especially software updates, is still scarce. Against this backdrop, this thesis presents four empirical studies that were conducted to investigate whether and how Agile IS affect users’ loyalty to IS, to identify potential moderators, and to understand how Agile IS should be designed to facilitate potential positive effects. In these studies, increments of Agile IS are operationalized as software updates and customer loyalty as a user’s continuance intention with a system. By drawing on the IS Continuance Model in a scenario-based online experiment, the first two studies reveal empirically how Agile IS have the potential to increase user continuance intentions. Users of Agile IS show greater IS continuance intentions, despite that some functionality is provided only later on, as compared to a consistently feature-complete traditional IS. This effect is diminished somewhat when the software is introduced with an extensive feature set right from the beginning. Nevertheless, the size of an update does not seem to play a significant role. The second study reveals that this positive effect of updates only emerges if the user is not very knowledgeable regarding the software, because experts in contrast to novices seem to devalue Agile IS (their continuance intentions decrease with Agile IS in comparison to traditional IS). Additionally, the second study shows that the removal of features through updates reduces continuance intentions even more than the equivalent addition of features when considering the absolute magnitude of change. With empirical data from a laboratory experiment, the third study identifies update frequency and update type as further moderators of the effect, and confirms the hypothesized mediation mechanism presumed by the IS Continuance Model. The fourth study examines the role of update delivery strategies, i.e., the timing and presence of a notification and an installation choice. In this study, feature and security updates are distinguished, as both seem to have different characteristics with respect to the delivery strategy (i.e., users ‘need’ security but ‘want’ to add functionality). The findings show that both update types should be announced to users, in the case of a security update, only after successful installation, while presenting an installation choice to users prevents any positive effect for all types of updates. Overall, this thesis highlights the importance of understanding Agile IS and software updates from the user’s perspective. First, the results show that Agile IS have the potential to affect user’s continuance intentions, thereby contributing to a comprehensive theoretical foundation on Agile IS. Also the findings put the user more at the center of investigations in IS. Second, the empirical findings provide evidence in support of a necessary fine-grained understanding of IT Artifacts as malleable compositions of specific features and characteristics. This answers the call of several researchers to put the IT Artifact more at the focus of IS research (Benbasat and Zmud 2003). Third, the results reveal that changes in IS might change users’ attitudes and behaviors over time, which extends the predominant view of IS in post-adoption literature from a mostly static to a more dynamic perspective. With this finding, we answer the call of several IS scholars to consider the evolution of IS more thoroughly (e.g., Jasperson et al. 2005; Benbasat and Barki 2007). For practitioners, the findings of this thesis provide empirically backed rationales to inform management decisions concerning the deployment of Agile IS and offer guidance on strategic or design considerations. Overall, the results show how and when the value provided by IS from a user’s perspective may be increased by the deployment of Agile IS and software updates.
