Abstract:
A considerable amount of research has been done into studentsâ first year experiences at university: their transition from school to university studies and their social needs and experiences. The work described in the literature has concentrated on students who attend school on campus. If on-campus students are experiencing problems with feeling isolated, a lack of identity and feeling part of a community, then how do distance students deal with these same issues? A research project conducted at Edith Cowan University in 2004-2005 sought to discover the issues affecting first year students and the problems they experienced when beginning studies in online professional education programs for librarians, library technicians, teacher librarians, archivists and records managers. Many of these students in the School of Computer and Information Science (SCIS) study by distance education and are wholly dependent on elearning. There are others who attend on campus but undertake a significant proportion of their studies through elearning. Communication and IT skills and preparedness must be added to the list of major first year experience issues for this group. Two separate studies were initiated to find out how the online environment differs from the on-campus experience, how students feel about studying online and what needs to be included to facilitate a more supportive experience at university. The results of these two studies - First experiences of online university study and Using discussion forums to create an online learning community - are reported here.

Abstract:
In the first chapter, the author explains his interest in computer-based information systems combined with their interactions with and use by members of the professions, as an on-going research focus and topic. After basic definitions, the discussion moves to the professions that are considered in the thesis and the organisational contexts in which their interactions with information systems occur. Finally, the chapter considers (1) the relevance of dissemination of research results as an integral and essential part of the research process and (2) the author's value framework, within which the studies described in the thesis are presented. The following chapter contains a review of research approaches employed in information systems and software engineering research. These approaches are examined to indicate how and where they have been used in the studies presented in the author's published papers reprinted in chapters three to nine. Because of the predominance of the action research perspective taken by the author, the rationale and results that can be achieved from the action research approach are specifically examined. Finally, chapter two considers the advantages of problem-driven research and the need for a diverse range of research approaches in information systems research. The following seven chapters are reprinted copies of published papers, four from journals and three from conferences. Chapter 3 describes a management problem related to ancillary works of the Thames Barrier; chapter 4 describes optimisation techniques and minimum cost design as used by engineers; chapter 5 describes an accountant's management information system; chapter 6 describes a knowledge-based system related to the selection of pacemakers for a cardiologist; chapter 7 relates to education of engineers in mid-career; and chapters 8 and 9 relate to the education of medical students and doctors in mid-career. The final chapter, chapter 10, reflects on the work described in the earlier chapters; and on factors which might have affected the outcomes of the research. These factors include (1) the role of the author who for periods operated as a consultant-researcher, and (2) the fact that the studies were undertaken in organisations and situations in which a managerialist climate existed. This is followed by research conclusions and implications for future research.

Abstract:
Background For epidemiological research purposes structured data provide identifiable and immediate access to the information that has been recorded, however, many quantitative recordings in electronic medical records are unstructured. This means researchers have to manually identify and extract information of interest. This is costly in terms of time and money and with access to larger amounts of electronically stored data this approach is becoming increasingly impractical. Method Two programmatic methods were developed to extract and classify numeric quantities and identify attributes from unstructured dosage instructions and clinical comments from The Health Improvement Network (THIN) database. Both methods are based on frequently occurring patterns of recording from which models were formed. Dosage instructions: Automated coding was achieved through the interpretation of a representative set of language phrases with identifiable traits. The dosage data table was automatically recoded and assessed for accuracy and coverage of a daily dosage value, then assessed in the context of 146 commonly prescribed medications. Clinical comments: Automated coding was achieved through the identification of a representative set of text and/or Read code qualifications. The model was initially trained on THIN data for a wide range of numeric health indicators, then tested for generalizability using comments from an alternative source and assessed for accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity using a subset of 12 commonly recorded health indicators. Results Dosage instructions: The coverage of a daily dosage value within the dosage data table was increased from 42.1% to 84.8% coverage with an accuracy of 84.6%. For the 146 medications assessed, on a per-unique-instruction basis, the coverage was 79.7% on average with an accuracy of 95.4%. On an all-recorded-instructions basis the weighted coverage was 65.9% on average with an accuracy of 99.3%. Clinical comments: For all 12 of the health indicators assessed the automated extraction achieved a specificity of >98% and an accuracy of >99%. The sensitivity was >96% for 8 of the indicators and between 52-88% for the other indicators. Conclusion Dosage instructions: The automated coding has improved the quantitative and qualitative summary for dosage instructions within THIN resulting in a substantial increase in the quantity of data available for pharmaco-epidemiological research. Clinical comments: The sensitivity of the extraction method is dependent on the consistency of recording patterns, which in turn was dependent on the ability to identify the differing patterns of qualification during training.

Abstract:
The status of Information Systems (IS) as a discipline has been widely debated as a body of knowledge that offers a number of concepts, methods and techniques to understand and improve the roles of information communication systems and technologies in organizations. Current state of this debate as reported in academic journals signals an imperative to ground some of the perspectives in relation to what IS professionals use in practice in different cultural and geographical contexts. This paper aims to contribute to the debate by tracing the unfolding of information systems as a body of knowledge using the ideas of Abbott on disciplines. We use three different stages of a discipline's development: differentiation, conflict and absorption and map them using a citation and co-citation analyses of two main IS journals (EJIS and MISQ) in the period between 1995 and 2008. Our results indicate that dominant ideas and models to investigate IS phenomena emerged over time are behavioural based and study IS adoption/acceptance/rejection in organisations, many of which are predictive and thus lending themselves usable for positivistic quantitative and qualitative research. There are however stable varieties within IS building on interpretivism and constructivism that we need to recognise and reignite in order to ensure that this field continues moving forward, in particular in studying current and future processes of innovation and diffusion of technology worldwide. Le présent travail porte sur l'analyse des connaissances et des représentations des élèves ainsi que l'évaluation des documents textuels de l'ONISEP en vue d'améliorer son système d'information. En effet, les systèmes d'information actuels souffrent de plusieurs faiblesses qui sont dues principalement à leur inadaptation à l'activité cognitive et linguistique de leurs utilisateurs. Nous présentons dans cette thèse une méthodologie de conception de système d'information en fonction des connaissances du public concerné. Pour cela, nous avons utilisé la théorie de la psychologie sociale pour étudier et analyser les représentations des élèves et évaluer les documents de l'ONISEP. Ensuite, nous avons formalisé les documents de l'ONISEP en utilisant les graphes conceptuels. Enfin, nous avons présenté une méthode de reformulation de texte prenant en compte les connaissances de l'utilisateur et celles du domaine professionnel en se basant sur la théorie de la paraphrase. La validation de cette méthode a montré une amélioration de la compréhension du texte par les sujets.

Abstract:
Multi-agency cooperation has been considered a very important aspect of crime investigation and crime prevention in modern time. The aim of this study was to explore the realities of multi-agency cooperation as experienced by Swedish crime workers from the police, the Prison and Probation Service and the Social Service. Previous research has shown that inter-agency cooperation’s success and/or failure is controlled by factors such as time, resources, amount of guidance and so on, however very little research has explored the modern Swedish crime workers’ perspective in the subject. Semi-structured interviews were conducted regarding the topics of cooperation between agencies, information exchange and secrecy. The results showed that while cooperation within the Swedish Judicial System was operating well, collaborative efforts with external agencies like the Social Service, was severely lacking. Collaborative efforts were experienced as less actual cooperation and more information exchange, which in turn was heavily controlled by secrecy laws and therefore often seen as one-way communication with external agencies. Additionally, when well-planned collaborative projects funded by the government are in place, the cooperation tends to work easier, however workers are less inclined to prioritize such efforts when the agencies’ own resources are being used.

Abstract:
In this master's thesis, we investigate the meaning and significance of professional networking to Swedish librarians in their everyday professional practices. In addition, we explore the relationship between librarians' networking needs and the needs or expectations presented by their institutional context (i.e. the workings of their specific library organization or, more broadly, the library sector and work life). The study consisted of 1) a pre-study through an online survey directed to librarians at seven public libraries and four research libraries in Sweden 2) qualitative interviews with 21 public and research librarians recruited through the pre-study survey and 3) an additional interview with the chair of the Swedish national library association (Svensk Biblioteksförening). Overall, participants in the study rated the importance of their professional networks highly. When asked the significance of professional networks to everyday professional practice, the responses given by the interviewed librarians favored explanations in terms of 1) knowledge provision and learning, 2) interlinkage of library organizations with the goal of raising the standards of library service and 3) as a means of providing both professional and organisational support. Many of the study's participants also reported an expectation that they should network, citing either a direct expectation from library management or general trends in contemporary Swedish work life. Librarians' professional networking needs were related by respondents to characteristics of their institutional context, where some librarians pointed to factors such as sparse staffing or budget constraints as creating a need for professional support networks. This is a two years master's thesis in Library and information science.

Abstract:
Whilst technology use has always been a part of the practice of health care delivery, more recently, information technology has been applied to aspects of clinical work concerned with documentation. This thesis presents an analysis of the ways that two professional groups, one clinical and one ancillary, at a single hospital cooperatively engage in a work practice that has recently been computerised. It investigates the way that a clinical group???s approach to and actual use of the system creates problems for the ancillary group. It understands these problems to arise from the contrasting ways that the groups position their use of documentation technology in their local definitions of professional status. The data on which analysis of these practices is based includes 16 hours of video recordings of the work practices of the two groups as they engage with the technology in their local work settings as well as video recordings of a reflexive viewing session conducted with participants from the ancillary group. Also included in the analysis are observational field notes, interviews and documentary analysis. The analysis aimed to produce a set of themes grounded in the specifics of the data, and drew on TLSTranscription?? software for the management and classification of video data. This thesis seeks to contribute to three research fields: health informatics, sociology of professions and social science research methodology. In terms of health informatics, this thesis argues for the necessity for health care information technology design to understand and incorporate the work practices of all professional groups who will be involved in using the technology system or whose work will be affected by its introduction. In terms of the sociology of professions, this thesis finds doctors and scientists to belong to two distinct occupational communities that each utilise documentation technology to different extents in their displays of professional competence. Thirdly, in terms of social science research methodology, this thesis speculates about the possibility for viewing the engagement of the groups with the research process as indicative of their reactions to future sources of outside perturbance to their work.

The study had four main hypotheses that examined the relationships between job satisfaction and the reasons for attending continuing professional education (CPE). The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between training and job satisfaction with the objective of adding to the body of knowledge related to both job satisfaction and training and development. Participation Reasons Scale was used to measure the reasons for attending CPE activities, and the Job in General Scale and Job Descriptive Index was used to measure job satisfaction. The surveys were administered over the Internet to information technology professionals working in higher education. The participants were contacted by email with a message explaining the purpose of the research and a Web link that took the participants directly to the survey. After collecting the data, it was exported into SPSS and analyzed using Spearman Rho and Mann Whitney U statistics and a simple structure exploratory factor to determine any underlying structures between the job satisfaction and CPE.

Abstract:
This thesis reports results of a research study into the information behaviour of Kuwaiti legal professionals. The main aims of the research were to investigate the information behaviour and the information needs of Kuwaiti legal professionals, and examine whether the existing legal information sources and services meet their needs. The theoretical framework for this research was derived from the investigation of information behaviour in general, and studies of legal professionals in particular. Wilson's (1996) model of information behaviour was also used to develop the conceptual framework of this research. This model takes into account four types of information seeking behaviour: active search, passive search, passive attention and ongoing search. This model helped in formulating research questions and hypotheses and the design of data collections methods. It was used also as a tool for organising the interpretation and discussion of the research findings. The research methods were designed from a user-centred perspective, including using data collection methods that are supportive of user-centred research. Triangulation was used in data collection by the use of questionnaires, interviews and critical incidents technique. The participants of the research included legal academics, legal practitioners such as state lawyers, prosecutors and private lawyers, law librarians, legal publishers and legal database producers in Kuwait. The results showed that a personal collection is the source used most by Kuwaiti legal professionals. The majority did not use electronic sources such as databases and the Internet. A large percentage also did not use law libraries. The majority of academics sought information themselves, whereas the majority of practitioners relied on the assistance of others. The majority of respondents had no training on the use of information sources. The majority also relied on internal communication as a channel for information exchange more than external communication. The majority of respondents scanned between one or two journals, although journals should be among the major information sources for legal professionals. On the other hand, newspapers ranked first for serendipity for both academics and practitioners. New books were ranked as a first source by practitioners for updating information, whereas journals were ranked first for academics. These results showed the information seeking problems of the legal professionals. This led to the development of the interface requirement for the design of a prototype Kuwaiti Legal Information System (KLIS) interface. The aim of the system was to provide relevant and up-to-date information, and links to other information sources and services in order to improve communication channels at both national and international level. The system also sought to be cost-effective. Finally, a heuristic usability evaluation was undertaken by consulting a number of experts on the system's usability and contents. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations for further research and to stakeholders are made.

This research uses the framework of information economics to analyze the translation profession and translator certification. The translation market is found to be heterogeneous and fragmented and both buyers and sellers
frequently enter and exit the market. The recruiters seeking translators surveyed believe translator certification can enhance the overall image of the translation profession but increased monetary benefits might be minimal.
There are two reasons why currently translator certification systems do not function effectively as a signal. First, because of
"counter-signaling", high-quality translators may have less incentive to use certification because signaling behavior may mark them down as mediocre translators. Second, due to "signal-jamming", vocational master's degrees in Translation are likely to compete with translator certification as a signaling device, and employers find it difficult to make inference about job applicants' employability from these two credentials.As recommendations, professional translator associations, translator
training institutions and others need to collaborate in developing multilateral signaling devices as well as provide translators with the
required knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for them to thrive in the
ever-changing translation market.
Esta investigación utiliza el marco teórico de la economía de la información para analizar la profesión de la traducción. Concretamente, se utilizan los conceptos económicos de información asimétrica y selección adversa. La información asimétrica implica dos o más agentes económicos, entre los que uno de ellos tiene mejor información que el resto. Aplicado al mercado de la traducción, analiza la situación en que los compradores de servicios de traducción necesitan reclutar nuevos traductores para su trabajo, pero no pueden distinguir con eficacia entre un "buen" traductor y uno "malo". Se ofrecen las siguientes recomendaciones para consolidar el efecto referencial del sistema de certificación del traductor: una coordinación más cercana entre los sistemas de certificación y las organizaciones profesionales en diversos países o regiones; una mejor aplicación de códigos profesionales y de regulación de la conducta; desarrollo de un reciclaje continuo que mantenga a los traductores al día de la realidad cambiante de la profesión. Pero sobre todo, es necesario que las asociaciones profesionales de traductores, las instituciones formativas y otros implicados, trabajen juntos en el desarrollo de mecanismos multilaterales de referencia que puedan cubrir las demandas de contratantes y clientes, a la vez que proporcionan a los traductores el conocimiento, habilidades y actitudes requeridas para su supervivencia y prosperidad en el complejo y variable mercado de la traducción.

Abstract:
This paper examines the challenges that the success of library and information systems design and implementation is now generating. It makes a distinction between management and mobilization and argues that the organizational success of the interrelated fields of knowledge management and in-formation systems (KM/IS) rests on strengthening (1) their descriptive understanding of how individuals in organizations make their own choices about accessing, using and sharing knowledge and (2) corre-sponding prescriptive recommendations for adapting the technical designs of KM/IS to best accommo-date those choices. It is success that has created this need, in that every major trend in KM/IS adds to user choices and reduces institutional control; the library now has no locked doors and experts can â meetâ wherever they are and whenever they want. Blogs bypass all the formal traditions, practices, edi-torial policies, verification procedures and protections against libel and misrepresentation of traditional print media. The frequent use of the term â democratic journalismâ to describe the blog phenomenon (George, 2006) in itself implies that traditional journalism is non-democratic. While KM/IS is not driven by a search for profits in the mass consumer market, it shares the same basic aim as leaders in consumer electronics, mobile data services, and even the gaming field. It is a commitment of institutional funds, whether from research grants or in-house sources, to innovate through information technology. The pur-pose of the innovation is to enable and encourage new behaviors. Knowledge management is focused in this regard on knowledge-sharing and collaboration. Information services are generally more centered on individual information-seeking and learning. When user choices determine the adoption and impact of this type pf innovation, then obviously it is essential to understand the foundations and dynamics of choice.

Abstract:
This study examined information technology professionals' perception of employee organizational commitment (OC) and its relationships to turnover across various industries in Thailand. Perceived job alternatives and thoughts of quitting were included to examine their influence on turnover intention both directly as independent variables and indirectly as mediators. Hypotheses tested were 1) the direct relationship between organizational commitment and turnover intention among IT personnel from various Thai companies, 2) the relationship between thoughts of quitting and turnover intention, 3) the relationship between perceived job alternatives and turnover intention, 4) the indirect relationship between organizational commitment and turnover intention through mediator - thoughts of quitting and 5) the indirect relationship between organizational commitment and turnover intention, as mediated by perceived job alternatives. The survey questionnaire used instruments that were already translated into Thai from previous research (Wongrattanapassorn, 2000). The original items in English were included with each item in the Thai language to provide respondents with additional information on the meaning of constructs. In addition to demographic items, the survey questionnaire contained four measures, one for each of the four variables: organization commitment (Allen & Meyer, 1990), thoughts of quitting (Peters, Jakofsky & Salter, 1981), perceived job alternatives (Peters, et al., 1981), and turnover intention (Hom, Griffeth & Sellaro, 1984). An accompanying letter with the hyperlink to the questionnaire page was sent via e-mail to 300 IT professionals who were randomly selected from the subscribers of Computerworld Thailand magazine and also those who attended IT seminars organized by Computerworld Thailand. Two hundred and eight responses returned, providing an acceptable response rate of 69.3 percent. Correlation and regression were used to test hypotheses. Results revealed that there was no direct relationship between overall organizational commitment and turnover intention. However, there was a negative direct relationship between continuance commitment and turnover intention. There was also no correlation between thoughts of quitting and turnover intention. There was a positive relationship between perceived job alternatives and turnover intention. For the mediating effect between organizational commitment and turnover intention, the results revealed that thoughts of quitting did not mediate the relationship as well as perceived job alternatives.

Does wage disparity, measured as the difference between highest and lowest paid workers, affect the quality of reported financial information? I collect accounting professional wage data from an international accounting and finance employment placement firm for the period of 1972 to 2017. I investigate to what degree wage disparity in corporate and public accounting has affected accounting information quality by testing predictions derived from equity theory and tournament theory. I find that vertical wage disparity within, as well as horizontal wage disparity between, corporate and public accounting is associated with measures of the relevance and reliability of accounting information. Specifically, pay disparity within corporate accounting is associated with a significant reduction in earnings persistence, in the earnings-returns relationship, in the accruals-cashflow relationship, and with higher levels of absolute abnormal accruals. In tests of pay disparity within the public accounting profession I find evidence of improved information quality associated with higher pay disparity. These findings are consistent with the different structures of employment and career advancement within the corporate and public accounting professions.

Until the arrival of the Internet and online era this activity was largely library-centered. But there is increasing ‘dis-intermediation’ and ‘deinstitutionalization’ of the process of information search, access and delivery. This has implications for manpower development programmes. The composition of the emerging information market also needs to be understood in order to design and implement appropriate manpower development programmes. Based on an examination of ‘market indicators’ this paper suggests that the ‘divide’ between products of educational programmes and the requirements of the market place needs to be bridged.

Uma das estratégias adotadas pelas organizações para suprir as necessidades de TI é a terceirização parcial ou total da prestação dos serviços de TI. O objetivo do presente estudo foi descrever a essência do significado da experiência consultiva à luz percepção de profissionais que prestam serviços de consultoria na área de TI. Para atingir o objetivo proposto foi realizada uma pesquisa fenomenográfica, com o intuito de permitir que um grupo de quinze consultores atuantes em uma instituição pública de natureza reguladora colocasse de forma livre sua vivência relativa à prestação de serviços de consultoria de TI. A análise dos dados coletados resultou na identificação dos temas Significação da Área de Atuação, Conformação da Competência Consultiva, Valoração do Serviço e Predisposição Consultiva relacionados com a experiência consultiva de TI. Os significados atribuídos para esses temas permitiram propor uma descrição da essência desse tipo de experiência. A relevância da pesquisa jaz no fato de que, normalmente, a análise da terceirização enfatiza a relação contratual firmada entre a contratante e a contratada e reconhece o consultor apenas como um dos recursos necessários à prestação do serviço sem considerar as particularidades inerentes à atividade consultiva.
Information technology (IT) is a component that influences organizations´s performance and its effective application constitutes a challenge due to the speed associated to technological changes and the amount of financial resources and expertise of human resources required for its implementation. One of the strategies adopted by organizations to meet the needs of IT is to outsource all or part of the provision of IT services. The objective of this study was to describe the essence of the meaning of advisory experience according to the perception of professionals who provide IT consulting services. To achieve this purpose, a phenomenographic research was conducted in order to allow a group of fifteen consultants working in a regulatory public institution freely put its experience on the provision of IT consulting services. The data analysis resulted in the identification of the themes Acting Area Significance, Competency Advisory Conformation, Services Valuation and Advisory Predisposition related to IT consulting. The meanings attributed for these subjects allowed to propose a description of the essence of this kind of experience. The relevance of the research lies in the fact that, typically, the outsourcing analysis emphasizes the outsourcing contractual relationship established between the contractor and the contracted company and recognizes the consultant as only one of the resources needed to provide the service without considering the peculiarities inherent to the advisory activity.

The information technology (IT) industry workforce in the United States is expected to increase by approximately 50,000 jobs through the year 2024, creating opportunities for employees to change jobs if they are not satisfied. Replacing talented IT professionals can cost a business as much as 150% of the salary of the outgoing employee. The purpose of this descriptive single case study was to identify strategies successful IT business leaders used to reduce voluntary turnover among IT professionals. The research population was 4 leaders from an IT business in southeastern Virginia, who oversee supervisory and hiring. The conceptual framework was Herzberg's 2-factor theory. The data were collected using semistructured interviews and reviews of applicable organization documents. Yin's 5 phases of analysis were the means to process the data resulting in the 5 themes of flexibility, individual, recognition, team, and work-life balance. Recognition and flexibility were the 2 key themes that made significant contributions to the organizational culture and success for the business. The implications for social change include companies using unspent replacement cost dollars to invest in local communities, improve the local economic growth, and provide incentives for employee quality of life and improved work environment.

The purpose of this study was to investigate patient use and presentation of Internet health information and its effect on patient-health professional relationship from a sample of residents at active adult communities in Texas. Five sites were used to recruit the 260 participants between November 2012 and January 2013. The data were received using a self-administered survey. Using Cronbach’s alpha, logistic regression and regression analysis through SAS, the data revealed that older respondents are less likely to discuss web-based information with health professionals. In addition, logistic regression analysis indicated that four of the variables, IHI Sharing, educational status (bachelor degree), marital status (married), and perceived health status (excellent and very good health) predicted varied of the 20 indicators making up the patient-health professional relationship scale. Further studies are needed to enhance this research.

Over the past year, cyberattacks have increased and one of the reasons is a lack of security awareness in society. The Covid-19 pandemic has forced a drastic change in working conditions and the most prominent shift is that many people had to start working from home. From an information security perspective, this places great demands on the individual since they are not protected by their organization's security solutions in the same degree as in the physical office space. This is being exploited by cybercriminals and the issue of focusing on the human aspect of information security is becoming more essential. Education is used to increase information security awareness (ISA), which in turn leads to improved security behavior. Through education, organizations can therefore reduce the risk of being exposed to various cyberattacks. To develop training programs within information security, one should look for the underlying factors that have an impact on ISA. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to see if demographic factors have any impact on ISA among Swedish professionals and students. The study is based on a quantitative survey in which a total of 157 professionals and students participated. The study was conducted using The Human Aspects of Information Security Questionnaire (HAIS-Q), which is a validated questionnaire developed to measure ISA. The results of the study strengthen previous findings that knowledge about security policies is a crucial factor for a high ISA. In addition, age and level of education also show an impact on ISA. Information about underlying factors that impact ISA can be useful when designing training programs in information security for Swedish professionals and students.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The practice of medicine has always been a big area of interest as a profession. The focus ranges depending on issues at hand - it may be on the educational, training, humanistic, economic, professional ethics and legal aspects. One area of medicine that is under the spotlight around the world is that of the maintenance of clinical competency, followed very closely and almost linked to professional ethics. This study follows the introduction of a system of Continuing Professional Development (hereinafter also referred to as CPD), in South Africa and an overview of how it has been introduced in a few other countries. The main areas of focus being the extrication of inherent values of CPD, relating this aspect to quality improvement in medical health care. The medical profession as well as most of the interested parties, has different perspectives regarding the fact that the system is regulated through legislation. There is also the doubt whether the CPD system will be effective in achieving the goals that it has been set to achieve. Although a system of Continuing Medical Education has been a tradition in all countries, which implies that the CPD system is not totally new as far as the educational principles are concerned, the values accruable need to be exploited. It is the possible success of this kind of evaluations that may foster more understanding of the inherent values in this CPD system.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Beroepsgewys het die praktyk van geneeskunde nog altyd groot belangstelling gelok. Die fokus verskuif na gelang van die onderwerpe ter sprake. Dit wissel van opvoedkunde, opleiding, humanisme, ekonomie, en professionele etiek tot regsaspekte. Dwarsoor die wêreld word daar gefokus op die handhawing van kliniese vaardighede, gevolg deur professionele etiek wat ook daarin verweef is. Hierdie studie bespreek die instelling van 'n stelsel van Voortgesette Professionele Ontwikkeling (hierna verwys na as VPO) in Suid-Afrika asook oorsig oor die wyse waarop dit in 'n paar ander lande ingestel is. Die klem lê op die inherente waardes met betrekking tot die verbetering gehalte in mediese gesondheidsorg. Die mediese beroep, asook meeste van die belangegroepe het verskillende opvattings oor die feit dat die stelsel deur wetgewing gereguleer word. Daar is ook twyfel of die VPO-stelsel in sy vooropgestelde doelwitte sal slaag. Wat die opvoedkundige beginsels betref, is die VPO-stelsel nie totaal en al nuut nie. Alhoewel VPO in ander lande tradisie is, is dit nodig om die totstandkoming van waardes te ontgin. Die moontlike sukses van hierdie tipe van evaluasies mag dalk beter begrip ten opsigte van die inherente waardes in die VPO-stelsel bevorder.

Through this thesis I aim to bring forth how IT (information technology) could be used in different ways to create a better collaboration between students and companies. My intentions are to explore and observe what the demands are from both parties and find out, if it is the lack of an up to date platform that causes discrepancy in establishing relationships. Due to the limited time accorded for this research, I will focus on evaluating the platform, LinkedStudent and elaborate a design suggestion in attempt to enable a better collaboration. The research question is “How would it be possible to create a close relationship in between students and companies with the help of IT?” This paper endeavors to shed light on issues like usability, user experience and web 2.0 both theoretically and empirically. With the amount of knowledge I have gathered during my study years I opt for a deductive approach of the problem, which on the course of the research through induction will be proven. The core assumption being that an innovative and warm environment can be created on a platform by interacting on the Web through organized communities with dynamic capabilities. A platform can be the optimal solution to establish relationships based on common interest.

Due to the digitalization era and challenges faced by the healthcare sector, Medical Information Systems are now being extensively used at hospitals. The implementation of the systems is a complex task which entails a need for careful considerations from a managerial view, since the main purpose with implementing the systems is for managerial control. One of the things management should consider is the professional aspect. The nursing profession is a highly specific one, and this could implicate special considerations. The aim of this master’s thesis is to take on a sociotechnical approach towards the implementation of Medical Information Systems and investigate how the nursing profession is affecting the implementation process, and what it may implicate for hospital management. To answer the research question a qualitative approach has been chosen. The empirical data has been gathered through semi-structured interviews with nurses from the case organization. The result implies that the nursing profession have a substantial impact on the implementation process. Instead of embracing the instructions and support offered by management, the nurses develop their own way of working within the system.

The security of digital information is paramount to the success of private organizations. Violating that security is a multi-billion-dollar criminal business and exploiting these vulnerabilities creates a single point of failure for operations. Thus, understanding the detection, identification, and response to information security incidents is critical to protecting all levels of infrastructure. The lived experiences of current professionals indicate 10 unique themes in regards to how information security incidents are addressed in private organizations. These unique themes led the researcher to offer several conclusions related to the importance of planning, communication, offensive capabilities, and integration with third-party organizations. Information security incident management is accomplished as an escalation process with multiple decision points leading to a restoration of services or security. The source of the incident is not often sought beyond the first external IP address but their purpose and intent are essential to information security incident management. The key lessons learned from professionals include the importance of having a plan, training the plan, and incorporating the human elements of security into information security incident response. Penetration testing as well a knowledge about threat and attack patterns are important to information security incident management for detection, containment, and remediation. External organizations play a major role in the management of information security incidents as fear, incompetence, and jurisdictional issues keep the private sector from working with government, military, and law enforcement organizations. These themes have wide reaching implications for practical application and future research projects.

This thesis explores how professional identity figures in the enactment of IS and focuses on groups of professionals as users and developers of information systems and investigates how they relay their professional knowledge via the system to retain identified aspects, in this case autonomy, of their professional identity. The study looks at how these professional groups of staff control, tailor and maintain important modules within an information system and how this facilitates the appropriation of it into their everyday working practices. It has been argued that the rise of professions in society has been such that they are seen as integral to post-industrial society. Yet, within information systems, minimal research has considered users as professionals and moreover users as developers. Instead, professions, professionalism and users as developers as units of analysis have usually been intertwined with discussions of IT/IS workers/professionals and codes of conduct via systems development. Additionally, many still propose the technologically deterministic route of rolling out information and communications technologies (ICTs) expecting that users will, and indeed can, 'download' what they know into a system. This approach is usually underpinned by the predominant assumption that the system will be developed by one group (developers) and used by another group (users). Therefore this study focuses on two professional developer-user groups within environments populated with skilled professional workers and considers the implications of the deployment of IS in such contexts. In particular, the author attends to the influence of technology on a central feature of professional identity - autonomy. The melding of professional workers, who often enjoy a particularly autonomous status in organisations, with information systems that have the potential to erode this, offers a fruitful site for investigation. This study looks at contact centre and academic environments and therefore, investigates how professional identity figures in situations where it would be expected that officially sanctioned autonomy, is as a rule minimal, within a contact centre environment and typically normal practice within an academic environment. In order to do this, the author draws on case study data, which provides insights into the deployment of a module of an enterprise-wide student information system in a department of a UK university and a scripting module in a HR contact centre.

Essay 3 defines the major job descriptions for careers in the new Big Data profession. It to describe the Big Data professional profile as reflected by the demand side, and explains the differences and commonalities between company-posted job requirements for data analytics, business analytics, and data scientists jobs. The main aim for this work is to clarify of the skill requirements for Big Data professionals for the joint benefit of the job market where they will be employed and of academia, where such professionals will be prepared in data science programs, to aid in the entire process of preparing and recruiting for Big Data positions.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the ways in which employees attempt to gain information about the relationship they have with their immediate supervisor. Uncertainty level and gender were predicted to be related variables. Prisbell and Andersen's uncertainty measurement scale, revised Baxter and Wilmot relational information-seeking tactics, and an original information-seeking frequency scale were utilized to examine 50 emergency service personnel on uncertainty level, frequency of information-seeking effort, and specific tactic utilization. Pearson product-moment correlations revealed no significant relationship between amount of uncertainty and frequency of information-seeking. Utilization of t-tests revealed no significant difference by gender in the frequency of information-seeking. The MANOVA results indicated no significant differences in the specific tactic utilization of males and females. However, Chi square values and univariate analyses identified the public presentation, joking, and hinting tactics as being used significantly more by males than females. It was recommended that research be continued in the area of working relationships.

Abstract:
Organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) has been suggested to facilitate organizational functioning. However, how OCB is motivated and the extent to which OCB is exhibited by highly skilled professionals remains uncertain. Very little theoretical and empirical research has focused on motivational factors that elicit the exhibition of OCB. In addition, previous research has found that information technology (IT) professionals exhibit significantly lower OCB than non-IT professionals. This particular discrepancy suggests that there is a need to study OCB exhibited by IT professionals from a motivational aspect. In order to provide a theory-based model that explains OCB, this research utilized expectancy theory to examine how an IT professional's cognitive forces affect the valence of a job outcome and how the valence of the job outcome influences his or her OCB. The hypotheses were tested using partial least squares and multiple regression techniques with a sample size of 85 IT professionals. Using IT professionals as the unit of analysis, the results indicated that the research model explained 36 percent of the variability of OCB exhibited by an IT professional. The results also confirmed the significant relationship between valence of job satisfaction and OCB and the significant relationship between OCB and actual job satisfaction. Among the five cognitive forces tested, commitment to organization and commitment to profession contributed significantly to valence of job satisfaction. Furthermore, this research found some significant relationships among trust in supervisors, trust in coworkers, job stress, commitment to organization, and commitment to profession. Finally, conclusions, limitations, and suggestions for future research directions were discussed based on the findings.

Abstract:
Organizations globally are spending millions of dollars replacing information technology (IT) professionals. IT professionals, who possess technical skills and competencies that interconnect business processes, are costly to replace. There are direct and indirect costs associated when an IT professional leaves, such as advertising fees, headhunting fees, and project delays. Lacking a firm understanding of the reasons why IT professionals leave their positions, many business leaders do not have strategies for reducing turnover rates. Building on Herzberg's motivation-hygiene theory and March and Simon's process model of turnover, this exploratory multiple case study sought to identify the strategies that business leaders view as essential for retaining IT professionals. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 10 IT managers in the Houston, Texas, area; participants were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Thematic analysis revealed eight strategies for addressing turnover: compensation, opportunity and advancement, rewards and recognition, relationship with the supervisor and coworkers, training and development, communications, meaningful work, and flexible work schedule. Findings from this study may contribute to positive social change by providing business leaders with more insight about how they can retain IT professionals. The high turnover among IT professionals affects individuals, families, communities, organizations, and the economy. Implementing strategies to reduce turnover rates can help keep individual employees and their family members together and reduce the unemployment rates.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate: what is the significance of professional networks for women within the IT industry. Previous research shows that there are barriers women in the field of IT face when entering and advancing in the industry. To investigate the potential connection between barriers and professional networks ten women were interviewed. Professional networks for women within the sector are examined through a qualitative lens. This study support previous research that showed that women in the IT industry face barriers. Moreover, this study highlights benefits of professional networks, representing that women receive and develop personal skills that can make them more successful at work. This study also provides criticism towards the networks and shows that there is room for improvements. The professional networks described by the respondents in this study seem to miss out on the opportunity to fundamentally discuss the barriers women face as professionals.
