<p>Search engines for biological information are not a new technology. Since the 1960s computers have emerged as an important tool for biologists. Online Mendelian Inheritance in Man (OMIM) is a comprehensive catalogue containing approximately 14 000 records with information about human genes and genetic disorders. An approach called Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) was introduced in 1990 that is based on Singular Value Decomposition (SVD). This approach improved the information retrieval and reduced the storage requirements. This thesis applies LSI on the collection of OMIM records. To further

A retrieval model describes the transformation of a query into a set of documents. The question is: what drives this transformation? For semantic information retrieval type of models this transformation is driven by the content and structure of the semantic models. In this case, Knowledge Organization Systems (KOSs) are the semantic models that encode the meaning employed for monolingual and cross-language retrieval. The focus of this research is the relationship between these meanings’ representations and their role and potential in augmenting existing retrieval models effectiveness. The prop

Abstract:
This research develops an information retrieval system (IRS) using a semantic document representation derived using a combination of categorial grammars and conceptual semantics. Of particular interest to this research are documents in the document collection which a user would include in the set of retrieved documents, if the set was selected manually, yet are excluded by automated methods of IR. This research vigorously embraces the belief that language is a comprehensive system which encodes and transmits information. Therefore, traditional keyterm approaches used as a automatic document re

Africa has been seeing a steady increase in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) systems deployed in health care institutions. This is evidenced by the funding that has been going into health information systems from both the government and the donor organisations. Large numbers of national and international agencies, research organisations, Non- Governmental Organisations(NGOs) etc continue to carry out studies and develop systems and procedures to exploit the power of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in public and private health institutions. In the telecommunications industry, one of the most time-consuming tasks is troubleshooting and the resolution of Trouble Report (TR) tickets. This task involves the understanding of textual data which can be challenging due to its domain- and company-specific features. The text contains many abbreviations, typos, tables as well as numerical information. This work tries to solve the issue of retrieving solutions for new troubleshooting reports in an automated way by using a Natural Language Processing (NLP) model, in particular Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT)- ba

Abstract:
Doctors can experience difficulty in accessing medical information of new patients. One reason for this is that the management of medical records is mostly institution-centred. The lack of access to medical information may negatively affect patients in several ways. These include new medical tests that may need to be carried out at a cost to the patient and doctors prescribing drugs to which the patient is allergic. This research investigates how patients can play an active role in sharing their personal health records (PHRs) with doctors located in geographically separate areas. In order to a
